My previous relationship ended recently. I find that I perform a lot of these in relationships without the BDSM context. Feels like I'm more in tune with the care side over the punishment side.

Because when you look at it technically, it kinda seems like it. Aftercare is given after a scene as a way to show affection and care. So when you really break it down, it seems like aftercare is a reward, albeit a very important one.
No. Aftercare is never earned as a reward; that’s abusive. Aftercare should always be the resolution to the scene.
