- The passions not inherently evil - it's what we do with them, what we train our (instincts) towards, what we allow to dominate and dictate our responses that matters.
Envy - the fear of being deprived of 'what belongs to me by right....' We think that if someone else is attracting admiration, or attention, or reward, and there is a limited amount of this commodity, then I must be getting less. Crucially, with God, loving one more doesn't mean loving another less.
As a counter, Rowan Williams suggests Blessed are the peacemakers: peace comes about when we get beyond the zero-sum mentality.
Despair - the absence of hope, of the sense of the possible. This is because we look at situations, including our own failings, only from our point of view. We fail, but God has not failed, and what God sees is our growth, or failure to grow, in the passage of time. In response to personal betrayal, Peter repented, while Judas despaired.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake; those who are persecuted are blessed, because they know there is a truth that goes beyond our point of view.
Do I see the wellbeing of others as a threat to my own wellbeing? (Envy.)
Do I see things from a merely human perspective, or from God’s perspective? (Despair.)
