I have been with Mint Mobile for over a year. I have not noticed ANY difference in my cell service. The only difference is I have more money in my pocket. I like paying once a year and then I do not think about it again until it is time to pay again a year later. I have the 5GB plan. I have WiFi at home and work.

Most people want to draw attention to the 12-month prepay as a negative because it's hard to come up with 12 months in advance , which is an issue for some people. But another issue from my perspective is that you are essentially signing a one-year contract. Once you've prepaid, there is no way to get a refund so you're locked into that service for a year, which pretty much negates the benefit of having an unlocked phone. If you move and there's no service at your new location, too bad. If the service just goes to pot at the location you signed up at, too bad.
Another downside to mint mobile is they have no roaming. So if you're not on the T-Mobile network, you have no service. This is usually not a problem in metro areas, but when you get out into the country it can be.
Edit to Add: I've been a mint customer for about 2 1/2 years and overall I've been very satisfied with the service in the Denver metro area. It's probably one of the two or three best deals in cell phone service... If you sign up for the 12-month plan. If you can't pay the 12 months in advance, there are better options out there

You bring up some really good points. I'm not sure it I mentioned it in this video or the one from a year ago, but I brought up similar points. I never thought of it as a year contract but you are right. I have done enough reading into how you would or could cancel a plan based on bad service. That's a really good perspective and I am glad you took the time to comment. I always want people to know the good, the bad, and the ugly. I truly appreciate your comment because it offers different food for thought. Thank you.

Paying the upfront fee is how they get that discount most likely. It's probably why they give that generous three months $15 for all plans to give you a crazy deal for a lay of the land. With that stated, if you're happy with the service and the price you're getting for the plan provided, it's among the most affordable in the country you probably won't complain about the upfront cost. It actually reset the rates per month nationally.
I switched from a company where I liked the service and was paying $50 (with autopay discount) for the plan that is $25 per month for year with Mint (actually a bit less with the intro three months). I'm saving over 50% for comparable service on a non-family plan. Paying upfront is not a huge issue if I'm saving over $300 a year on the same service from a different provider who charges month to month.
If you can't afford the year of service, you might want to be looking into Hello Mobile's $5 or $10 or FreedomPop/Red Pocket's $10 plans. For little to no data.

@@razorbeard6970 I've since left Mint mobile for US Mobile. I think they're the best thing going right now, especially their light plans for people who don't need tons of data. You can get two gigs a month for $10 -- taxes included. That includes priority data, roaming, hotspot, pretty much the works. If you need more than 2 gigs you can buy more at $2 a gigabyte, or just get an unlimited plan for 25 a month.

I said it a month in and still true almost at 1 year... would not go back to AT&T if they drop their price to what Mint charges. I have access to wi-fi most of the time so don't need big chunks of data from my phone and the service with Mint is great.

Thanks for the info! I currently have Google Fi and it’s been awesome, especially for traveling as your phone will work in 200 countries right off the plane. But I’m tempted by the idea of paying my phone bill a year in advance. Also, just wanted to say you have very nice delivery and I’d guess you had hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Keep up the great work!

Adrian - Thank you. This is the most usable information I've found on Mint. Seriously considering a switch to Mint from my old-school, low-function T-mobile prepaid plan.
    Two additional things to note:
    1. I'm told that Mint offers a 3-month promotional starter plan at the 12-month rate. If true, that gives a chance to to see how you like it, without committing to the full year on the first day.
    2. For us old folks that live from retirement savings anyway, the one-year up-front payment is a great deal. Taking $180 from the savings once a year is not really much different than $15 from the savings every month.

  • @MrSaeedted

Or, like cricket, there are many brand new phones that are on android 12&13 that they don’t allow on the network. Where MM will allow those phones.
And yes T-MOBILE is shaky and before you pay for MM you absolutely need to know if TM has good service in your area. If it doesn’t MM isn’t for you. So… if you decide to try it, do a test run with a new number MM can provide. If it works well. Then you can get another card and port your number over.
Also. A good and fair review. Thank you.

I’ve had Mint Mobile for a few years. At first, it was pretty good and seemed to work as well as other carriers but over the last year it seems to be getting worse. My problem with Mint’s business model is it essentially is taking a step back in time to contracts with carriers. I can afford to prepay for a year, but why would I want to? With all the competition their bulk pricing isn’t that much different than anyone else, and with competitors I’m not locked in.

      I bought a $199 phone & mints new cycle is $30/mo. & is now owned by T-mobile.
I ordered my mint kit cell $199 & 3-months svc $90 prepaid, Mar, April, & May.
By May 9th, mint turned off my phone but that's only 2-months.
I paid up front for 3-months.
Now, I paid on May 10th & mint sent me a msg stating they are crediting my $120 payment for my next billing cycle starting on June 9th.
Mint blind charged my card not $90 but $120 for -
      3-months.
      Basically, I've paid for 6-months & I'm only getting 4-months.
I paid bet Mar-August $210. I've only had the phone for 2.25 months.
Boost allows my older phone & I paid $50-month.
I'm switching back because if I were still with boost my payout wd be $150 at this point & not $210.
Therefore, this low paid educator can use those funds to pay the electric bill.

Totally incompetent Tech Support and super inefficient Customer Service. Their "specialist" screwed up my porting in and then it took me literally 8 hours of my time on the phone with them, over 2 full weeks without cell service, to shepherd them thru the fix. Their whole system is ineffective. Everytime I called them (like 15 times) it took them 20-25 mins to answer the phone + another 30-45 mins to transfer me to transfer me to a more competent Supervisor. One day, I literally spend 3 solid hours on the phone with them just trying to track a new SIM card that was late arriving, only to find they accidentally never sent it. Honest to God.
Now on Tello and it's a totally different experience. Took me literally 15 minutes to port myself in and another 15 mins to port in my number. When I did make a mistake, their Customer Service picked up after 2 rings and was super helpful in troubleshooting my issue and resolving it. Their system is infinitely more functional. And they're just as cheap, as Mint is now raising its prices after selling out to T-Mobile.

Surprisingly I call Hong Kong about once/month and there is no extra charge. Mint also enables my old iPhone SE first gen Wireless Calling which helps tremendously due my primary home location has a far away tower. I could not get Wireless Calling with Redpocket nor Xfinity services. Cons: International texting to Hong Kong doesn't seem to work. Everybody here should know this already, your phone should be the unlocked kind if you want to venture into MVNO. So $16.67/mo including taxes, about everything one needs to do except streaming ball games while riding the bus.

I have MINT mobile for about a year. Paying $15 a month. Got the 3 months for initial signup plus 3 more free months. Six months for a $15 sign-up. Then, the $15 would jump to $25 if you pay each month. Dumb. If you pay $15 x 6 months, its $120.00. Still $15 a month but you pay for a few months in one clip. If you pay $180 all at once, its for the whole year.... and no additional costs. It's better than the $45 a month I was paying AT&T for same deal.
    $15 x 12 = $180.00 a year for MINT.
    $45 x 12 = $540.00 a year. For AT&T
And T-Mobile is great for my area ... NYC
