  • Exploring the Suwannee River Valley and Basin. Where many ancient springs, caves and karst terrain can be discovered. On this video I explore an ancient spring and a sinkhole where a vast underwater cave system flows beneath from the Floridan aquifer. During the Eocene period, Florida as we know it was covered by a vast ocean. Over time, the shells, sand and coral that existed here were crushed down to form the limestone that crops up throughout this area. Limestone, which is naturally basic, is easily eaten away by acid rainfall, forming fissures and hollows through which water can flow. After the ocean receded and the dinosaurs met their end, mammals roamed this area, as underwater fossil evidence shows. Now-extinct giant sloths, camels, saber-toothed cats and mastodons were hunted by nomadic Paleo-Indians who showed up around 12,000 BCE. They were followed by multiple cultures of Native Americans including the McKeithen Weeden Island culture over a thousand years ago. The area was inhabited by Native American Indians all the way up until the 1800’s. The site has been used for many purposes over the centuries. Driving over the Hal W. Adams Bridge in the beginning of this video crossing the Suwannee River into the pristine wilderness here. It is Florida's first suspension bridge built in 1947 and is still in use today. Exploring the springs, cave areas and sinkholes of the Lower Suwannee River Basin. Hiking through the wilderness here and observing various passages and sinks into underwater cave systems it’s part of the geology in this area of Florida within Suwannee River Valley. These caves connect into the Suwannee River and Floridan aquifer are spring fed. It’s a critical and sensitive habitat area that’s very ancient. Throughout the wilderness here many springs and sinkholes dot the landscape with limestone rock outcroppings. The limestone and karst here dates back hundreds of thousands and millions of years. The habitat has changed over long periods of time of course and continues to do so. For thousands of years humans have been attracted to these areas for its beauty and rich resources. The Suwannee River is a river that runs through south Georgia southward into Florida in the southern United States. It is a wild blackwater river about 246 miles long. The Suwannee River is the site of the prehistoric Suwanee Straits which separated peninsular Florida from the panhandle. The nature here is pristine and very scenic to experience.

Im getting up there in age now.... This brings me back to the late 60s / Early 70s ... I was a 1st grader with family and friends, before some of these locations became state parks, our family had friends that owned land in the Gainesville area, we would go to their private BLUE HOLE locations and float on the creeks and rivers... Snorkle 🤿 and fish.... Such a pristine, beautiful location.... Before the crowds over run them. Fortunately, I still know of a very private " HUGE " blue hole location on the rainbow river ❤....

Just saw your Facebook post about putting a bookmark perhaps for good on these kinds of films/ content.... as a content creator/ former myself, I know how tough and discouraging it can be. Having Thousands of views on Any video is Nothing to scoff at, 99.999% of youtubers Never even reach that
No matter what you decide, you're already a legend man. And that doesn't come lightly from a passionate native Floridian like me.
Can always come back. Doesnt have to be all or nothing. I have with one of my more intensive podcasts, if I only cared for attention & etc excess I wouldn't do it... but trust me man I know it's tough too with the destruction of this beautiful irreplaceable state. My eco grief continues and likely will until the end of my days.
Watch out for your own sanity, get rest, yes. I know I'm a nobody especially compared to mother nature... idk what else to say. But thanks for all you've done for this home state of mine spreading awareness of nature and the history alike

& I swear, today is not so kind to feature length quality youtube videos. People's attention spans are shrinking, almost all about click bait/ whatever makes people feel good....
Don't stake too much sanity or any on how others accept or reject ya. I've been continually so damn misunderstood & ignored for some reason or another.... would be so easy to "lose it" especially as someone with some degree of bipolar &/or b.p.d., if I did think people in today's society made sense/ were on the up & up lmao but far from sadly.... yeah just not worth it to take most people or this topsy turvy world too seriously, if much at all at this rate
