- In this video I show you how to play Detroit Rock City by KISS including the guitar solo. This is a classic song from the KISS album Destroyer. Produced by Bob Erin and recorded at the legendary Electric Lady Studios. Probably one of the most iconic songs written and recorded by KISS. I hope you enjoy the video and guitar Lesson. Please subscribe!
I have been playing KISS songs since we were in my room in the 70s doing bongs and playing tennis rackets. I know most of them note for note, but i learned a new harmony part with this video.
😂😮💨....
I saw Kiss in 1976 at the infamous Anaheim Stadium festival concert. They opened with Detroit Rock City. It's a killer live.
So great! Kiss is and has been my favorite band since 78! Ace is the reason I picked up the guitar! Those Aceism licks are timeless! Without kiss I’d not be playing music! Great job as always bro! 🤪🤘🏼
Detroit Rock City is not Ace nor Paul, that come up with that solo part. It was Bob Ezrin that rewrote it.
@@standingvertical3048 I know that lol! Trust and believe not much about kiss I don’t know! Have one of the biggest collections in the world!
Ace was my first Influence as well! 😎🤟🏻
This is a fantastic lesson/ demo Marty! You break it down into sections and also explain the half step down tuning and the actual key and scale and the harmony in thirds etc. The tabs you made are essential for lots of us wanting to learn this. I really can’t thank you enough for putting all the time into doing this Marty, you have this brilliant and easy going way of teaching guitar and putting things across to other aspiring guitar players. Thanks for doing what you do Marty, you are so very much appreciated. 🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠👌🙋🏼♂️🌅🙏🕊💕🌌
Thank you! I am very happy to hear you liked the video and I really appreciate the comment and feedback. It makes it worth while to know what I post can help folks out. Thanks again! 😎🙌
Called it!!! I knew after seeing the Thayer unboxing you'd end up having to do Detroit Rock City. Awesome job as usual Marty! Always a pleasure to watch you play!!!
Man that thing just looks awesome! I'm not a Kiss fan or an LP fan at all but the look of that axe... It does something for me!
Lol. When I posted the Tommy Thayer Lp unboxing UA-cam started to throwing all this KISS stuff in my feed. And I have listened to most all the audio books (some for a second time). It kind of put me in a KISS mood for the last couple of weeks! 😂. I love Les Pauls. To me they feel perfect. 🤷
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker That's just awesome!
Hey to each their own! I have a few singlecuts. I just don't like the way it feels toward the neck joint trying to play the higher frets. Guess I'm just more of a "Super Strat" guy. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate the look of some LP's and LP style guitars though! Heck I might buy one of those for rhythym. I love LP's for rhythym with that thick tone only a singlecut can achieve!!!
Definitely gonna have to throw this on the list of songs to learn! I had a Kiss DVD box set growing up that I watched on repeat, the showmanship was incredible.
Do it brother! Thanks for watching. 😎
Thank you for the lesson. Love the Tommy Thayer Epiphone!
Thanks so much!! It's a great guitar. 😎🎵🎵🎵
Great track man fantastic fantastic man fantastic I had this album back when I was a kid I still wish I had all my old Kiss albums
Thanks Kenneth! Man hoo on over to Great Escape and get some Lp's and spin some records. It's a fun trip and hobby! Start with a mission of getting all the KISS records. 😁🙌
Alive was my first album as a kid and I wore it out!! I loved it!! It’s how I learned to play air guitar like a pro lol
HI Marty, thanks for doing this man. There were two small parts I was trying to figure out and I found them here on your video, very cool.
Very cool! I’m an early Kiss fan since Alive came out. Enjoyed the history you shared as well. Thanks for sharing!
You're very welcome! Man I've been listening to the kids audio books on UA-cam lately while traveling and have been in a KISS kinda mode lately. 😎🤟🏻
I love that Epiphone Les Paul. That's a beautiful guitar. Love this lesson, my favorite Kiss album, my parents had to 8 track and I wore that tape out. Thanks, again, good lesson.
Bravo .. good stuff again Marty! Outstanding content, brings back memories . You’re spot on .. whether you like Kiss or not… they were and still are major influences on music and artists even today. When you really dig in to Kiss songs you can learn a lot that can be applied to your guitar acumen and really is more complex than folks think in composition. What I like about your approach is you don’t come across all cocky like you’re better than anyone .. just one of the guys or a bro’s showing you the song you figured out .. I always Ike and share these .. I encourage everyone else to as well. 🤘🏻👊🏻
Thanks so much man. I really do appreciate it. I enjoy sharing stuff and take a laid back approach. Glad to hear and see that others like it. Guitar should be fun and I want the channel to be positive. 😎🙏
Agreed. There is too much negativity out there .. I see some comments of folks it is really disturbing .. keep on doing this and don’t pay attention to it .. your format is refreshing and very relatable. Side note: you should consider collaborating with other content creators that have huge followers to grow this channel. I think it’s that good and other subs would enjoy your stuff. like ..maybe reach out to Marty Shwartz .. do a Marty & Marty show or something 😂 the best and have a great holiday season ahead👊🏻
Guitar tone on this is great Marty. Stunning looking guitar too. 🤘
Bought Kiss’s first album back in 1974…. I was seven…. Thought it was one of those comic book records you bought back in the day…. Up to that point I annotated with my dads music. The music he listened to wasn’t bad, it wasn’t mine… I bought every LP every year they released two records all the way up to The Elder… lol….. used to play Detroit Rock City in the clubs trough out Germany….
My sister in law bought me Ace and Paul's solo records when I was 10. Changed me forever! That was my gateway to rock and roll. I never got any KISS album until I started buying cassettes and CDs in my teens when I could buy them myself. Phantom of the park scared me when it came on Tv when I was very little. But I knew I loved it!
I always loved this solo.
Marty I love your process man, Thanks Brother!
Thanks for watching and for the support. I really appreciate it so much! 🙌
Thanks again Marty. Another great lesson. Still have my original Destroyer album I begged for when it came out (I was in the first grade, 7 years old, I been rockin' awhile). Have barr chorded many a Kiss Tune.
I've been on a kiss kick now for 3 months. Been jamming crazy nights. That may have to be an upcoming lesson really soon!!
Lookin forward to it. Thanks again
Hi Marty! Do you think you can share your gear and settings for tone from this video? Your tone sounds very close to what Kiss uses. You got ‘et dialed in, and we would love to know what you’re using. Thanks!!!! Great job on the video, as always…
The greatest teacher on the internet........
Aw man thanks 🙏 😁
Once again bravo your tab is great! What i like about the leads is it it opens up many other alternatives of expression i tab the same
Great stuff!! Learned some deep KISS history, too. I actually had Destroyer on 8-track for some reason, Columbia house. We were 10-11 years old… flipping out over KISS. This is one of their best songs, for me! I might be able to pick this up a little. On drums it’s a great kick beat… takes a loosy goosie but strong & steady bass drum foot. Hard to play if you think too much…
Thanks man! Dude, check out the Kiss audio books on UA-cam. It's all free. Such good stuff!
❤ my favourite teacher 🎸🌹👑🎶🎁thank you ❤
I was already listening to Kiss when I was fourteen. Then my mom bought me Destroyer for Christmas when it came out (what a cool mom) that was there best album ! For me anyway 🎸😎 ….The Tommy Thayer Epiphone sounds killer !
My first two KISS records were Ace and Paul's solo albums. I was so young I didn't know they weren't KISS albums. Lol. Then I got the first album and Alive on cassette when I was 15 and I fell in love with them. Ace was my first hero on guitar. 😎🙌
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker yep, it was like the Beatles for a different generation, I bought my first guitar the day after seeing them live and 60 years later I’m still exited to play music ..
Hi Marty, Excellent Cover, I got question for you, the intro to song is that played sixteen notes? I notice the way you tab it out? Please correct me if I am Right or Wrong, Thank you again Marty, Thumbs 🆙 for Great Video Lesson.
Hey man, I suck at tabs. Lol. I don't annotate rhythm. However, the intro has a swing beat that is like dotted 8th. Not stiff and straight. It could be annotated as 8ths and "swing feel" or written with dotted eights. Think Glen Miller "in the mood". Detroit Rock City has a swing feel to it.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Thank you Marty for your reply, and your help to, You pick out awesome song to learn, It got swing feel to it, I know what you are talking about. Thank you again and please do more Kiss Covers.
@@guitarist22lespaul90 you're very welcome! I sure will. 🤟🏻😎
Man as soon as I heard you playing the opening riff to the song, before you hit the first A chord my mind was saying "Cue the pyro! Flash!! Bang! Boom! Fire!!!' LOL! Great job on this. I love Kiss. Saw them live when I was 14. My first concert. Detroit Rock City was the opening song. Roll the clock ahead 30 something years and I saw them again, same venue. They opened with Deuce and Strutter. All greatness. Did Kiss tune down to E flat for all their songs?
yo dude just wanna ask. how did you get the plastic wrap from the closed pickup? i cant get it off its like under the mic. plz help it ruins the astetic :D im asking you cuz i have the same tommy thayer les paul
Fun easy music to play
I agree! Pick up and jam. Have fun! 😎🎵
Not really a demo of the guitar - but man what a cool guitar. I had a chance to buy one for $700 and I am still kicking myself for not buying it. Very cool.
Ace says in his Cold Gin tutorial , Gene said they tuned to Eb to save their voices
Yeh for sure. Most metal bands do it. Much easier in the voice. 😀🤟🏻
Great lessons!!! Sabbath, Zep, Queen please
Excellent
Thanks so much! Glad you liked it. 😎🎵
Daaamb man, what pickups did you put in that guitar?. Sounds huge and still so clear!
Just the stock Seymour Duncan JB pickups that come with it!
Am I the only one who just noticed like 2 days ago, that Ace is holding his guitar upside down and backward??? 😂 Its an album Ive stared at while listening since I was 12. Somehow it just jumped out at me.
Don't tell me that the KISS ARMY is still going on. I remember as a little kid wanting to join it.
Yeh. They're out there. Crazy crazy nights man.
Something I know finally up to speed oh yeah
Cool! Thanks for watching man. 😎🎵🎵🥂
Nice one mate, as always!
Thanks Davy! 😎🙌
Nice job! But I'm pretty sure I seen a smudge on the pickguard? Lol 🤣 joking! Thanks Marty
Haha! Maybe a booger. Hahahaha. 😂😂
If you watch old KISS footage & Ace even as of 2023 along with Tommy (Not a fan) they never go pass the 5th fret except for one slide. The solo is incorrect. I was shown first hand how the solo is played.
Good info man! 😎🤟🏻☮️
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Thanks! Keep makin' great content \\m//
NO hammer ons on the main riff!
Still sounds the same
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker or bends… so quite different
you're missing the sextuplets in the intro
AWFUL
Love that color on that Epiphone
