- In this video we're trying out some more from Wizzard. We decided to try out some more from Roy Wood's catalog, since we've started checking out The Move recently. This should be interesting. Enjoy!

By far one of the most under rated songs in pop. This tune received airplay in the UK and Europe. It stiffed in the states.
Roy Wood was so ahead of the times. Listen to the production quality, stacking layers of tracks. His projects were so like Phil Spector's Wall Of Sound as you mentioned.

Roy Wood was the lead singer writer and all round genius.
He can play almost any instrument, if memory serves he played all the instruments, he certainly did on his solo albums

What a joyous cacophony! I bought this when i was eleven years old and it was played at my junior school disco, i recall being considered cool for a few days afterwards!
Ahhh the wonderful Wizzard! 70's Glam rockers along with Slade, T-Rex, Sweet etc. Love Roy's distinctive voice and their big sound. 'Ball Park Incident' and ''Angel Fingers' were also hits.
Inreresting that the first song played on the then new Radio One was " Flowers In The Rain" By The Move. Another great 60s song. And I think you will notice that Roy uses the french horn to produce flowers from and throw them to the audience.

Roy Wood is a multi talented musical genius. The clip cut short. The full clip shows Roy playing the French Horn. Roy can play nearly every instrument there is. The "Glam" era had so many great bands & songs.
This version of the video ends at exactly the point he plays the French Horn solo, there's a full 5 minute version of the song you should look for 👍
This was number 1 in the charts for 5-6 weeks back in 73
This was from the 1973 Christmas Day edition of Top of the Pops which featured the various number ones of that year. Many of the bands would return for new performances and Wizzard were no exception (Sweet's performance of Blockbuster that you reacted to is from the same show). When the song was released earlier that year, they appeared on seven consecutive editions of TOTP. The first five each featured a new appearance on the show, with the final two being repeats. My memory from the time, which may not be reliable, is that, each week, more and more members of the band dressed like Roy Wood. Unfortunately, all those performances are lost as the master tapes were wiped (sadly, the vast majority of pre-1976 episodes suffered the same fate). In 1972, Roy Wood had top ten hits with three different bands: the last Move single (California Man), the first ELO single (10538 Overture) and he first Wizzard single (Ball Park Incident).
Roy said the band never knew what costumes he would hire for them (which was strange as The Sweet and Mud I think got make up and BBC Wardrobe to get some of their stuff
I think I still have the 7" somewhere. We used to call Roy Wood the Psychedelic Santa after he did his Xmas song. TOTP was great.
You’re spot on with the Phil Spector comment. After leaving ELO Roy Wood had a selection of musicians and basically said ‘what can I do with this lot’ so went for the retro rock / wall of sound. Roy has a great ear for mimickry and you should listen to Wizzard’s ‘Are you ready to rock’ trzck - very Bill Haley and his solo hit ‘Forever’ which is a mixture of Beach Boys and Neil Sedaka
Roy took Bill Hunt, Hugh McDowell and Trevor Smith with him from ELO when he formed Wizzard. Bill played keyboards, Hugh played cello and moog synthesiser and Trevor was the sound engineer. To complete the Wizzard line-up were, Rick Price on bass guitar, Keith Smart on drums, Charlie Grima on drums and percussion, all from the band Mongrel. Mike Burney on bass and baritone saxophone and Nick Pentelow on tenor saxophone, they came from the band called The Daltons.
Love this record which brings back so many great memories from 70's
Part of the Glam Rock era in the early 70s. As a teenager it was fun. Many performances on Top of the Pops were mimed for better tv presentation. But most people in the UK were non-contactable when it was on.

Also recall Roy Wood planting a custard pie in Noddy Holders face on Christmas Day edition of TOTP because Slade beat Wizzard to the No.1 spot 😂

They cut the french horn part at the end… there’s not an instrument that Roy can’t play, simply amazing guy. He was also in ELO early days…
That's right, bands were only allowed about three minutes on T.O.T.P., "See My Baby Jive" is almost five minutes long, so it was cut short.

It's from his best year in the UK charts 1973, Roy was one of the original Move members to progress into what we called: Glam Rock. 😅 He helped form ELO with Jeff Lynne as they both came from the Birmingham area in the UK. Roy didn't stay long with ELO though. 😊
E L O's, 10538 Overture. Their first single, and featuring Roy Wood, yet to leave and form Wizard, on Cello. The video is about as psychedelic early 70's as you can get. You also might recognise the very distinct guitar lick as Paul Weller poached it for his song, Changing Man.

Yep ! Cant go wrong with a bit of "Wizard " Got to admit I think he would scare the living crap out of most people if you did see him walking down the street ! But hey what a giggle they were ! cheers ! for the memory of being a little herbert , looking forward to TOTP as a 10 year old , then a year or two later TOGWT , Brill !
Interesting that you mentioned Phil Spector. At the time this came out in the UK it was called Roy Woods Wall of Sound. Also, this is a shortened version of the song and the French horn part was clipped off.
Roy was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame because of his part in creating the Electric Light Orchestra alongside Jeff Lynne.
It was released in 1973. Bands on TOTPs mimed at the time!

Roy was a rock star just about before Elvis! if you cut him in half he'd have it written through him like a stick of Blackpool rock.
When Roy first walked on stage, most modern household names of today were beginning to learn to talk or even unborn.
TOTP rarely allowed bands to play live, they had to mime, this led to many bands performing ‘ironic’ sets such as playing guitars without strings or not singing in synch. Notice Roy is chewing gum during this mime, the french horn is probably because a BBC director had asked what instrument he played. I think it was around the mid 1980s before TOTP had its first Live performance, up until then it didn’t really trust bands to create a performance as good as the released version, especially when they weren’t allowed sound checks and only had a 3 minute slot onstage in a tiny studio with a carefully herded group of ‘fans’.

funny you should mention phil spectors wall of sound ,roy wrote a song in that style called " angel fingers" wall of osund and ronnettes style well worth a look

Quite simply the most underated rock star to come out of Birmingham UK my favourite woody single ever pity America didn't latch onto woody as he remains a cult figure there. Check out angel finger's the follow up to this and again a number 1 single here in the UK

Roy Wood still does winter tours of the UK with his Rock & Roll Band, a nine piece outfit with four saxophone players. "See My Baby Jive" was the inspiration for Bjorn and Benny of ABBA to write "Waterloo", their winning entry for the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest.
Roy Wood is a very versatile musician, he can play over thirty different instruments. This TOTP clip cut off just before Woody plays the French Horn. Woody also has the Hoover Senior vacuum cleaner prop in the TOTP video for "Rock & Roll Winter" from 1974, it is worth a listen too.
The cello player is the late Hugh McDowell, later in 1973, Hugh rejoined Jeff Lynne in the Electric Light Orchestra, Hugh played on every ELO album from 1974's Eldorado to 1979's Discovery.
The French horn comes in right at the end of the song it fades out before he played it.

Roy Wood is probably one of the most underated musicians the UK has ever had, you should check out his solo albums, for example Boulders and Mustard, he does all the voices, plays all of the instruments, he produced and engineered them, and painted the album covers ...... As for the French horn on this track, the track was cut short on TOTP, it comes in at the end. You hand Roy any instument and he'll play it!

I saw Roy with Wizzard for the first time in 1974.
exactly right Chris ref the Spector sound.Most of Wizzards hits (Angel Fingers,Wish it could be Xmas) follow the same formula.
That was a badly chopped edit of the song, there's best part of a minute missing. Top of The Pops were really bad at cutting songs short to fit more into the programme. Roy Wood was a creative maverick, taking old-time rock 'n' roll and putting a unique psychedelic spin on it. He also had a solo hit in a similar vein with Forever, but what really stands out for me is the B-side which is a wonderful and very different instrumental called Music To Commit Suicide By. Don't be put off by the title, it's beautiful.
For some reason Roy Wood decided that recreating the Wall of Sound was a better bet than orchestral rock with ELO. Around this time he also did a couple of solo albums where I believe he played every instrument. In the end, I think he might have been too eccentric for the mainstream, and too pop for "serious" music fans. Another band who adopted an overt rock and roll throwback image was Showaddywaddy, who were very successful. If you like musicians in furry costumes, then The Wombles might be the band for you, some of the best session musicians in the UK playing dress-up for tv. They had a few hits as well.
The reason that Roy created Wizzard as a "Wall of Sound" 1950's style Rock & Roll band is so that both ELO and Wizzard couldn't be regarded as rival bands as their musical style was so different to each other.

Roy Wood brought keyboard player/French horn Billy Hunt and Hugh McDowell Cello with him from ELO. According to the story he had a political disagreement with manager Don Arden which got him to leave and do Wizzard. Funny enough Arden was also the manager of Wizzard and of course the dad of Sharon Osbourne

There are actually 3 verses. Both you and Lilly Listens have missed out as this recording leaves out the second one

Roy Wood is a musical genius. He was, as you can hear here the originator of rock orchestra. He formed a band called Electric Light Orcerstra (ELO). Unfortunately, he was more music than business and was ousted from the band he formed by the dick who became ELOS lead singer. He was brilliant. Still is. When ELO was inducted into the RNR hall of fame it was on the condition Roy was named as the founder. He was playing the Chello.
I believe you are quite mistaken about the relation between Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood. Nothing indicates that they had any serious fallout, even if they may have disagreed on where to go with ELO. And calling the genious Jeff Lynne a "dick" really just proves that you are one. A tiny one, for sure.
The costumes of them are brilliant, but their sound is mediocrity, at least it sounds me so. ♬🌺🌺🌺
