It's a marketing hoax! Because it says it's German we think we're getting high quality kebab but it's actually bland as oily paper. I don't know why people still bother to go there.
Gotta admire your sincerity and honesty. With your warning post would’ve assumed you were going to give a review for a local run place. The fact that you had to deliberate over a major chain ultimately shows that you put your passion for food and honest reviewing ahead of malice and unnecessary showboating. Fair play 👍🏼 Also I agree GDK seems to have gone down in quality and quantity since it’s expanded. Shame, was quite cool and quirky when it first came on the scene.
This is a great video, even if some think you were "overly critical", it demonstrates your honesty. I've never had GDK myself but I would still try them even after watching this to form my own opinion. But by the looks of it, it doesn't compete with actual german döners.
Just a thought. In most previous videos, aren't after thoughts normally given outside, away from staff? To avoid that awkward moment when staff overhear 🤔

That was an amazingly respectful and even handed review, no drama or over acting, just honesty. This was also my experience, had the one in fallowfield and got halfway through and couldn’t eat the rest. Chicken felt really slimy and there was no seasoned to it at all. Nothing like my experience at Abu Dhabi airport a few years back where I first tried GDK and it was heavenly

Damn mate! You right! I've just tried it and it's absolutely disgusting and flavourless! Have had way better at local kebab house. This kebab is dry, doesn't taste of anything, not even the meat it's made of i mean how can that even be??? Got to at least taste like meat but it don't! I can't get my head around that!! I had chicken and beef mixed and I couldn't taste either!! Also where is the doner spices? This aint doner. Never again!! The salad tasted bad as well. Horrible overpriced 'kebab'. Avoid it! Use ANY local kebab joint instead. You know what tomorrow I might actually go back and tell them how disgusting their food is and tell them to at least put some damn seasoning in it. Used to work at gdk they use left over meat from the day before to use in the spring rolls and they are frozen for weeks and staff sometimes ignore the use before date on them

First time I had it was awful, then after a while ended up having it again and really liked it. The last time I went though it was horrible. Haven’t been since. Really inconsistent.
I've been to a few different GDK's including the Batley one a couple of times. I would say that the Batley one is probably the worst one and the staff were always a bit awkward for some reason. The one in Derby was the best I've been to, but Oldham and Batley have gone downhill from when they originally opened. Definitely think your review was quite fair.

I've tried gdk in two different cities and it was consistently dreadful. I'm surprised they gave you that much meat, they usually pack it all with lettuce then front fill it with greasy meat to make it look like at least you are getting lots of meat. I think they have spent all the cash on marketing and packaging.
Glad someone called them out. Iv been once and for the price it was just okay. The independent are so much better and fraction of the price. Gdk is commercial...

Just been very excited to spot a gdk in Newcastle. Had a joint and got back to my hotel room with it. I've never in my life been so disappointed in a meal. The worst kebabs I have had from bog standard corner kebab shops are still a million times ahead of this place. I wish there was a way I could stop people from having to taste this shit
Absolutely agree with you! Over rated, over priced, no taste, rubbish portion size and the sauce isn’t great either. When you think places like Bradford have kebab places where you get better quality food at half the price with a bigger portion you question how long places like this will be around.,

That was a very honest review, which is the best way to communicate. To be honest I don't rate GDK, the branches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are exactly the same, greasy and over priced!
We have a GDK in Birmingham and they so a lamachan chicken wrap which is decent and your not left with the greasy aftertaste like with the normal donner. I do agree that they are overpriced for what you get and sometimes its a hit and sometimes a miss. Love the honest review as that’s what you’d expect. Much Respect bro!!

There is no comparison to the type of kebabs found in Germany. I often visit family in Hannover. My favourite kebab place is Hey Ferry, just by the main station. Wherever you go in northern Germany (I’ve not been to the south), the kebabs are superb. Whether you have the wrap or the bread, the care taken is far superior to the “fake” German kebabs available here. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve never had an issue with GDK, it’s just they’re nothing like what you get in Germany. Even the meat tastes different. And, let’s not go there with the sauces! I always go for the beef and whenever I’ve had it in Germany it’s usually cut by a chap with a shaver, but it’s cut thick and is piping hot! GDK cut it too thin. It loses its heat and becomes very dry but greasy. This is a fair review and, from my experience, pretty much in keeping with GDK in London.
My German wife went to GDK and was so disappointed. It was like an Italian going to Pizza Hut except if that Pizza Hut was called Uncle Beppe's Authentic Italiano Pizzeria di Napoli.
I agree with your review. I love doner kebabs and found the one in Leicester really disappointing. Got nowhere near that amount of meat, almost half that. Lacked depth and flavour. Really overrated in my opinion.
Just tried it, it tasted of nothing. Had the texture of meat and chicken but tasted like neither. I'm sure even Dog food has more flavour 🤣 Nastiest Doner I've ever had. I'm sure they don't actually eat doner like this in Germany!?
Interesting point of view and like others, big respect for the honesty in the review! It may be something about the areas you have visited? I've had a few in the different Birmingham branches in town and a couple in south London, a mix of delivery and eating in, and my experience has been completely different. Great food, not too greasy, and the spring rolls were absolutely fantastic! I hope they take your review to heart and implement some changes to improve
Thanks for you honest review and not hyping certain places that dont deserve it as some people follow the hype train. GDK has invested alot of money marketing etc but like you said its all about the quality
interesting, I have been to the Glasgow one and its the best Kebab I have ever had. I always get two when I go into town as there isn't a GDK near me. I have not had the experience in this video so it may vary branch to branch. I also tried the Doner Haus and it was no where near as good as GDK. and I also tried and award wining Shwarma Kebab in Glasgow which also wasn't as good. They have just opened one in Stirling which I will give a go as it may change my opinion. But I have had Kebabs all round the country as its my favourite takeaway and GDK has always come out on top. But this is just my opinion and as I say the experience may vary branch to branch city to city. So if you are ever in Glasgow try that one as it was really good. It would be interesting to taste the difference to one of their flagship stores in Germany. Maybe the franchises here don't follow strict rules like they do at Macdonalds or Burger King etc. where they taste the same everywhere you go.
Nice honest review by heyman again. I know someone who works there and he said he only had gdk 2 or 3 times. He also said you're paying for the name that's all. There's better places for doner wherever you are in UK. Me personally I tried it but I found it average at best. Keep it up heyman ❤
I was a massive fan when they started around 7 years ago, but I totally agree it’s gone downhill. The quality of the meat seems to have changed, especially post Brexit and the meat to salad ratio is off, way too much meat. Recently some of the branches have added ketchup to the chilli sauce to bulk out. Sad thing is it’s still better than than most “kebab” shops but we really need genuine Berlin style kebabs
If you go to London there are many great doner kebab shops go to Green lanes Stoke Newington and if you touch German Doner kebab again I will eat your hat not mine.
I personally have not had Kebab from them. But have heard from people that have who say they are not the best and can also be small on the portion size.But i will try.
I think you should try other branches too ,I have been to few branches in London and all taste good better then some of Turkish kebabs shop ,but everyone has their own opinions, I went to one of your recommended chapali kebab shop in Oldham lol that's was just spices

Same in Cardiff gdk. Started off well but gone down hill. Greasy, dry meat and lukewarm. Service also not the best. Good concept and nice looking stores though. Shame the food isn't that good anymore.
Kebab meat needs to be a certain thickness so it doesn't curl up and dry out. Where I live most of the kebab shops give enough salad for a 2 year old vegetarian, not good when you've ordered a extra large donner kebab.
In my opinion, this review business that we signed up for isn't about respect... It's about transparency and honesty to ourselves and our audience. Don't feel uncomfortable or hesitant to RIP into restaurants to Make them see the light. Especially big money chains like GDK. No excuses. No prisoners 💯
Not to criticise but yours looks better than the one I hade which it was half filled with vegetables at the top so I hade to eat that first and the meat at the bottom, the reason it tastes dry and oily is that it is made with a quarter of substitutes fillers like Soya and preservatives. Not that the others are much better. My advice is to choice kebabs that are not processed minced meat. In Greece it is against the law to sell processed minced kebabs or Gyros as it is unclear what it can be made of. In Ireland they tested the kebabs and the result was that the lamb kebab was as little as 5%. It makes sense as the wholesale prices are as little as 1.60£ a kilo.
Been to GDK a few times and the food is so bland so I get exactly what you mean. I think it isn’t made for the Asian pallet as we are used to a lot of herbs and spices and flavours. I’d give it a 2/10

I lived in Berlin for ~6 months and the kebabs over there are awesome, but I do think that GDK is a solid attempt at recreating and tastes pretty good IMO (have been to multiple branches). I would say that perhaps you went in on the wrong day, but given that it’s happened 4 times that’s maybe a stretch? Still personally prefer GDK over a kebab from like a Indian/sub-continental takeaway but I rate the honesty

Don’t know if you’ve been there but there is a region called Kreuzberg that you should definitely visit next time you go - lot of Turkish people there so the kebabs are great and they have a beautiful mosque as well
Have to agree, and to add insult to injury, I did get an upset stomach the last time I tried them. My wife told me many times not to go there - lesson learnt - the wife is always right!!!!!

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve never had an issue with GDK, it’s just they’re nothing like what you get in Germany. Even the meat tastes different. And, let’s not go there with the sauces!
I always go for the beef and whenever I’ve had it in Germany it’s usually cut by a chap with a shaver, but it’s cut thick and is piping hot! GDK cut it too thin. It loses its heat and becomes very dry but greasy.
This is a fair review and, from my experience, pretty much in keeping with GDK in London.

I agree with your review. I love doner kebabs and found the one in Leicester really disappointing. Got nowhere near that amount of meat, almost half that. Lacked depth and flavour. Really overrated in my opinion.
Just tried it, it tasted of nothing. Had the texture of meat and chicken but tasted like neither. I'm sure even Dog food has more flavour 🤣

Interesting point of view and like others, big respect for the honesty in the review! It may be something about the areas you have visited? I've had a few in the different Birmingham branches in town and a couple in south London, a mix of delivery and eating in, and my experience has been completely different. Great food, not too greasy, and the spring rolls were absolutely fantastic! I hope they take your review to heart and implement some changes to improve

Thanks for you honest review and not hyping certain places that dont deserve it as some people follow the hype train. GDK has invested alot of money marketing etc but like you said its all about the quality

interesting, I have been to the Glasgow one and its the best Kebab I have ever had. I always get two when I go into town as there isn't a GDK near me. I have not had the experience in this video so it may vary branch to branch. I also tried the Doner Haus and it was no where near as good as GDK. and I also tried and award wining Shwarma Kebab in Glasgow which also wasn't as good. They have just opened one in Stirling which I will give a go as it may change my opinion. But I have had Kebabs all round the country as its my favourite takeaway and GDK has always come out on top. But this is just my opinion and as I say the experience may vary branch to branch city to city. So if you are ever in Glasgow try that one as it was really good. It would be interesting to taste the difference to one of their flagship stores in Germany. Maybe the franchises here don't follow strict rules like they do at Macdonalds or Burger King etc. where they taste the same everywhere you go.
Nice honest review by heyman again. I know someone who works there and he said he only had gdk 2 or 3 times. He also said you're paying for the name that's all. There's better places for doner wherever you are in UK. Me personally I tried it but I found it average at best. Keep it up heyman ❤

I was a massive fan when they started around 7 years ago, but I totally agree it’s gone downhill. The quality of the meat seems to have changed, especially post Brexit and the meat to salad ratio is off, way too much meat. Recently some of the branches have added ketchup to the chilli sauce to bulk out. Sad thing is it’s still better than than most “kebab” shops but we really need genuine Berlin style kebabs
Personally I love the independents!
If you go to London there are many great doner kebab shops go to Green lanes Stoke Newington and if you touch German Doner kebab again I will eat your hat not mine.

I personally have not had Kebab from them. But have heard from people that have who say they are not the best and can also be small on the portion size.But i will try.

These guys just opened up in Northern New Jersey right outside of NYC. They have a doner burger on the menu 🤢. Due to the location it does very well.

Same in Cardiff gdk. Started off well but gone down hill. Greasy, dry meat and lukewarm. Service also not the best. Good concept and nice looking stores though. Shame the food isn't that good anymore.

Kebab meat needs to be a certain thickness so it doesn't curl up and dry out.
Where I live most of the kebab shops give enough salad for a 2 year old vegetarian, not good when you've ordered a extra large donner kebab.

Not to criticise but yours looks better than the one I hade which it was half filled with vegetables at the top so I hade to eat that first and the meat at the bottom, the reason it tastes dry and oily is that it is made with a quarter of substitutes fillers like Soya and preservatives.
Not that the others are much better.
My advice is to choice kebabs that are not processed minced meat.
In Greece it is against the law to sell processed minced kebabs or Gyros as it is unclear what it can be made of.
In Ireland they tested the kebabs and the result was that the lamb kebab was as little as 5%.
It makes sense as the wholesale prices are as little as 1.60£ a kilo.
Been to GDK a few times and the food is so bland so I get exactly what you mean. I think it isn’t made for the Asian pallet as we are used to a lot of herbs and spices and flavours. I’d give it a 2/10

I lived in Berlin for ~6 months and the kebabs over there are awesome, but I do think that GDK is a solid attempt at recreating and tastes pretty good IMO (have been to multiple branches). I would say that perhaps you went in on the wrong day, but given that it’s happened 4 times that’s maybe a stretch? Still personally prefer GDK over a kebab from like a Indian/sub-continental takeaway but I rate the honesty

Don’t know if you’ve been there but there is a region called Kreuzberg that you should definitely visit next time you go - lot of Turkish people there so the kebabs are great and they have a beautiful mosque as well
