What is a bug out bag?
@@cindybarnes1533 lol
I'm 73 and live in a small 4th floor apartment. I walk down the stairs alot but use the elevator to get back up. Anything over the 7th and the fire dept can't get to you. I have mainly been a hurricane prepper and have everything ready for evacuation. I can no longer carry my BOB as it is too heavy for this little old lady. I ordered a rolling suitcase and it came today. Really nice!!! Tonight I will repack everything and add a few things I couldn't carry before. I enjoy watching to learn more from others. Never stop learning and never stop prepping.
God bless you, sweetie. You sound like my kinda gal.
1949er here. We do what we can!
Recently we had a scare at 3AM. Woke up to crazy lightning and woke the wife. She went into ACTION getting cats, guns, purse and prescriptions all in the basement in about 5 minutes. Luckily, no tornado. But I really appreciated her smart thinking. Next time will be even faster. Love you, dear :-)
The impressive part is getting the cats herded that quickly.
An IMPORTANT misconception about required amount of water! 1ga/per a day does NOT include cooking/sanitary use, & is a bare minimum! If you are very active in the high heat (working the fields on 80+ degree days your water intake and requirements WILL INCREASE! This is a MUST to understand!
I’m 73 and I live in a two bedroom two bath condo in hot Arizona. I prep. My second bathroom is where I store my water. I store in the second bathroom bathtub in case there’s a leak. That way the water goes down the drain not into the condo below me. I keep my water Bob by my second bathroom in case the water goes. My guest bedroom has a bed. Any guest who stays with me I better be prepared to share the room with my preps because the walls are lined with shelves. The walk-in closet in that bedroom is also filled with preps and my Christmas decorations. I have a solar generator and solar panels and hope to get a secondary one so I can have one on each side of my condo. That way one can sustain the refrigerator while the other is charging. I have a raised garden five minutes from my house and native seeds for our climate vac sealed for the next few years. My neighbors don’t know I’m a prepper. They just think I’m a nice old lady. It’s a very cool thing about being an older woman is that you become invisible. Right now that’s an advantage. I think I’m in really good shape and have enough preps not only for myself but for my daughter and her family who live five minutes away. As we like to say, we hope for the best but we plan for the worst. Vaya Con Dios everyone…
I live in AZ as well in a one bedroom condo with my dogs, first floor, only one level above me. Luckily, the building is brick too with concrete walls. Just started prepping this year and have almost a year's worth of food saved up for myself and my two small dogs. Working on water now and getting a solar generator for my chest freezer. Where I am located, bugging out really isn't an option as I'm in the city. I just imagine trying to get out and being stuck on I-17 or I-10 with everyone else trying to get out of the city. Then what? Left most of my prep behind and now I'm stuck in traffic in our heat with my dogs?? Nope. Bugging in or bust. I've got boom stick and freedom seeds to take care of any uninvited guest if necessary. Stay safe and my best to you.
Gracias!! Blessings!
Plug up your water storage tub so if there is a leak, it doesn't go down the drain!
How do you keep people from stealing your generator or panels.
@@Desert1776 what is a boom stick?
I lived in a third floor apartment in London for four years. When the tube train ahead of mine on the line was bombed I finally understood just how bad a situation I was really in. No tube trains or buses running, everything shutdown. The phone network went down. It took 4 hours to walk home... the shops all emptied of food. Insane panicking people everywhere. Never again, I got out of the city ASAP.
It is definitely time to double down on food and water preps guys! Happy to offer help and advice if needed👍
@Chris B Very sensible and my opinion exactly 👍
How much food and water?
@@cindybarnes1533 Hi Cindy, if you want a good idea see my 'Bunker Tour' video.
How did you plan or what was the first step to get out of the city?
@@VictoriaLepantoFatima I found a job in the countryside, then a nearby home and made the move. Not easy but necessary.
Being disabled, there is no bugging out. Unfortunately...
I don't know what your disabilities are but concentrate on what you can do and not on what you can't do. This is what famed scientist Stephen Hawkins did. Good luck and GOD Bless you.
Buy life straws if you can't afford a high price water filter
Buy 'em anyways. Redundancy is a good thing.
Sawyer water filters are affordable
A tire plug kit and the skills to do it should be a great thing to learn.
Not everyone can bug out, some will have to stay put…
One thing that’s a little more prevalent is apartment prepping than other ways I think is having a couple of fire extinguishers within east reach and having offsite prep storage. If it’s bad then you might have neighbors on the other side of the building trying to stay warm/ cook with fire and burn the place down and you’ll have to grab your BoB and fight your way out to an alternate location. You can do everything right and someone else trying to live can cause your to bug out
You can easily grow bean sprouts from the seeds with nothing more than a jar and some water. The seeds themselves will last a few years if stored in a cool, dry place. That could be a source of food that is high in nutrition. They are easy to grow, relatively quick (about 6 days) and they are FUN to watch them grow.
Interesting. What kinda beans are best for this? How do you consume these sprouts? How long can they be kept/stored?
Ah... tried sprouting Mung beans. Turned out beautifully. Cheers! 👍
I live in NYC (I am worried about my family, 5). I just found your channel, and I have shared your priceless videos, PEOPLE DON'T BELIEVE ME, they are confused because there is still a lot of food in the supermarkets and their goal is to enjoy the summer and grow flowers. Last week I was in my local supermarket, I heard the conversation between the manager and a supplier and he told the manager that starting in July all the products will increase by 16%. Thanks for your help!

@@Desert1776 THANKS!
I'm from Australia and because of recent floods (where before COVID we had major drought and massive fires!) the price of a head of lettuce is now $12 (from about $2), and green beans were around $15 per kilo but are up to $40 per kilo in some shops. We also have a potato shortage - the ones who make/sell the 'french fries' (we call them hot chips in Australia) and any other frozen potato products still have a massive shortage and this has been going on for months. Currently having a power crisis where the eastern side is on black out warnings all week, and then there is the fuel crisis where it cost me $55 to fill up half a tank of my small car! We are really feeling it here already with the price increases!
Apartment prepping is fine for the short term situations, storms, power outages, etc.
BUG-OUT plan w/ a DESTINATION is a MUST! All apartments are located in Urban/Suburban areas. Population DENSE & resource LIMITED.
Prayed up prepped up.
Sootch, would you consider giving Sarah Mac a mic for these videos or consider repeating the question after she reads it? At times, the question just doesn’t come off clear enough. Thx.
Stock up on water. Get a solar panel to put up in a window to charge batteries.
this past January my apartment lost heat..the guy who could fix it was sick and when he came to fix it he had to order the part..after 2 weeks i got heat again .but sure was glad i had a fireplace and a Mr. Buddy heater.
I'm paying close attention being that I'm in not just a building but it's in the Housing Projects in the City of Boston. Everyone tells me to get out but I believe this is where the LORD wants me. 🙏 Prayers for us all on what is coming fast..... GOD Bless
What if you plant a garden and hungry people steal your food?
Then you eat long pork.
Yes exactly what I need to hear living here in Irvine California in an apartment 💝 my friend and I laugh because I live by the airport. The nuclear power plant is somewhat near, a military weapons station and Los Angeles is 45 mins away 🎯. As for driving anywhere when the SHTF is not going to happen our traffic is the worse
SONGS (the nuclear plant) is being decommissioned. It doesn’t generate power anymore unfortunately
@@ajliebmann voting down desalination plants and shutter nuclear plants… ah man isn’t LA just so progressive in their thinking 😂😂🤦🏻♂️
You need to get out of Dodge!
I live 3 miles from MacDill AFB in Florida. It is home to central command and special ops command. We will be nuked and I won't feel a thing.
Worst...
Absolutely right about what other people think. What's killing this country more than anything is so many people being worried about what other people think about them.
Gatorade bottles work well for water too because they are thicker plastic and last longer than your standard water bottles, plus the lids are better too
You can also utilize the water in your hot water tank too!
And your toilet tank
Basically keep seasonal clothes, water, some food, cooking / eating utensils and BOB in trunk. So when bugging out (tell anyone around that you're "going to visit family" before incidents happen in your vicinity) you will be carrying out your stuff and that doesn't seem odd. Remember to double check your bobs as we've had to use an item or 10 and not all gets put back. One daughter rented a storage unit and has a large quantity of preps there as she lives on 2nd floor apt. When she needs to empty it (bug out) she will just say shes moving and close out the acct. Refuge Medical known from Bear Independent has excellent medical first aid kits for all ages from booboo kits to major trauma kits. Just a couple of ideas.
For sudden in the middle of the night power outages I bought two emergency night lights that automatically turn on when the power goes out.
Helpful tip: I use 5ga food grade buckets, you can buy them cheap almost anywhere (even Walmart), I then buy “Gamma Lids” (look em up online, the main ring snaps tight w/seal on the bucket, while the inner lid screws off and on w/seal, air/water tight) for ease of access.
You can use them as your bed frame under the box springs to utilize space efficiently. Stackable, can be stacked in the back of a closet etc. And you can grab a bucket and go easily enough rather than lugging heavy totes, boxes, or chests of supplies.
It allows easy organization, you can have an entire bucket of rice, beans, etc., or you can put multiple items per bucket for an easy grab & go situation. I’m 5’9” 125 lbs, 50 yrs old w a bad back, but I can grab 2 full 5ga buckets & carry to my truck in a hurry easily enough if I have to get out of dodge quickly.
Love my LDS #10 can cases. Got a year of food under my bed. Lol
Little impact on my available space in my apartment.
Make sure your spare tire is the same size of the other tires!
Great idea! Thanks!
We are in a small rental house. Thanks for addressing this. I can't believe I haven't seen this video that's been up for at least a year.
It would be nice if you would repeat the question. Can't always hear the original question!
I’ve lived in rural areas and cities and I have to say I’ve always felt safer in a city. Living on a farm is the scariest. I can’t tell you how many times my family was robbed on the farm. But then, I grew up in TN and that is one mean, crime ridden state, camouflaged by “friendly neighbors” and church goers.
My SHTF plan is to move in with my parents, bringing all my gear. I already got them a rain barrel and my brother has some seeds- he's missing potato seeds, but no one is selling them atm anyway. I just got some basic canning supplies, I'll have to wait til next month to get something to practice canning on. I'm hoping to eventually get another rain barrel and some stuff in case the sewer/waste processing systems stop working, and a pressure cooker would be nice, but I'm not sure what size to get or if I can afford it.
A 16 qt Presto pressure canner/cooker sounds like what you want. You can pressure cook and pressure can, there are tons of videos for both. If you already like to cook, canning is not difficult. It's hot and time consuming...I wouldn't be canning inside when it's 90+ in VA...but in the winter it's like having a humidifier
Do your Parents know this is your plan? Probably wise to ask
Potato seeds are rather hard to come by, and can be tricky to grow - you may not get what you wanted.
The li'l spuds you plant to get eating potatoes don't keep well longer than *maybe* a winter in the right conditions.
If you haven't already, give growing potatoes a try.
Buy a few car batteries hang a solar panel out the window run an inverter, quiet, clean no fuel cheap way to have power indoors in Apt.
Algea only needs a few hours to grow in pool water plus bird excrement, etc...definitely filter it. Also, you can keep the pool covered and collect the morning dew every day!
My box spring for my bed is gone. I have 12 medium Wal-Mart gray boxes. In the baxes I have wzter...and other items. The bixes are covered by 1/4 inch plywood. Then a blanket and my matress
Thanks
I live in an apartment. I have been dehydrating lots of vegetables, eggs, lean ground beef and potatoes. It takes up less storage space. There are some great how to videos on UA-cam.
Have you checked out red Rose Homestead? She’s the one who got me started dehydrating.
Purposeful pantry is another great channel for dehydrating and preserving
While normally safe even a pool or hot tub can become contaminated by atmospheric conditions (ie., volcanic ash, radiological fallout, acid rain, etc.) any atmospheric contamination can render those sources unviable w/o the use of proper water filtration. I have a pool and that’s 10,000 gallons of water I have ready access to.
PRE-FILTER into buckets treat if needed & FILTERED before use.
I'm a bit late😁 but many thanks for this video. Appartment prepping is challenging. Greetz from Holland😊
My EDC is organized on top of my dresser next to bed. I can sit up grab my edc light (in pitch black) & I’m good to go.
I keep my heavy duty bicycle tire pump in my trunk. I have aired up a flat tire (car) with it. I was sweating buckets by the time I was done but it worked.
You can buy bed raiser's. This will raise your bed higher to create extra storage.
Almost every piece of furniture of ours has storage for our preps. Under our bed, our seating all has storage, we have closed bookcases full of prep stuff, closets full of stuff.
Planting, planting, planting... in every container available... good thing is a balcony will have less bug issues. 👍🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
good advice as always 🤘
Thx y'all, this is valuable info (from someone in an apt) 🤙
Thank you, this video is very helpful to my situation.
This video has been what I've been waiting for thank you.
Good good show gentlemen
Me personally I can live very long periods of time without stupidity. SHTF quickly sorts out a vacuum of common sense.
I live in an apartment, bottom floor, with a garage. I was told the only thing I can have in my garage is my vehicle per the fire marshal. I had my large tool chest, rubbermaid storage shelving, with my glass canning items, a chest freezer, buckets of my beans, rice, and canned goods. My patio gardening supplies all need to find a place in my home. So we have to downsize a lot to find a place for my stuff inside. Finding a way to still prep but live in a community with a lot of restrictions is very hard. I definitely find your videos a huge help. Thank you. Its just me and my two kids. But we are trying to prepare.
Did you confirm that with the fire marshal?
ive been spending alot of money at The Sportman Guide.. love that place.
Just sharing examples: Living in an apartment that is on ground with small garage, small patio in back which I garden in Growbags on pallets. I pressure can, can, debyderate, long term food storage in food savor bags, mylar bags stored in 5 gallon food degradable buckets with bay leafs in them. Now, I have them stacked each other behind my sofa with one of my table extenders on top, a pretty table cloth over them with flowers on top. Looks just like a sofa table. And same in my bedroom. My canned food is in Cupboards etc. Took me awhile to gather buddy heater, etc. I do have bug out bags ready etc. Just doing what I can on low income and me, myself and I. Thank You for your video. Stay Safe God Bless.
Sounds good! Thank you for sharing. Somehow Like minded people feel like a part of my family. Blessings!
a good flash light with instant strobe with some bear spray or just pepper spray is unbeatable
Do you think cheap space blankets would work well for reflecting the sun's heat on windows?
I think that is a good idea
@@alicook9088 not really
@Angry Fist Aluminum foil works pretty well.
I picked up several car shields from the dollar store. Another person got several sheets of foam board in the office supply section of dollar tree.
Mint lowers body temperature as well. Add mint to iced tea or water
I didn't know that. I'll check it out. I'm in south Texas (6 ft. from the sun) and on some days (115° F eg.), I can actually smell myself getting cooked. No bueno. I carry a large G.I. canteen. I fill halfway with water/powerade or vitamin water and freeze it solid. When needed, I top it off and put in its insulated carrier. Thanx friend.
How about hydroponics for apt. dwellers? Our if things got so bad you needed to garden without others knowing.
For heat, what about a butane burner?
I can't watch the whole thing right now (gotta work) but I will finish watching this evening. I live in a tiny studio apartment so I'm very interested in hearing what you might have for me.
Apartment prepping.... Learn to stand for long periods of time hungry cause the bread lines are gonna be long when your food supplies run out.
I live in a basement and it's really tough considering I came from a large property. My advice is to get yourself a bugout bag and keep protein bars and what not in it. Buy yourself a half dozen plastic 5 gallon buckets and fill them up with canned goods and other forever foods in mylar bags. Stuff them full and take them to different locations a mile perimeter, then bury them 3 or 4 ft deep. If shtf happens and there's disorder, you can choose the safest way out in the direction of your burial. You'll probably lose most of the buckets but at least you'll have some contingency to potentially have a chance.
Oh, and dont forget to take a spade or shovel and leave it close to your exit so you dont forget it lol.
Best thing I think are tins ..aldi..or morrisons.. but that's here in blighty..
Apartment prep. Like fishing in a barrel full of fish.
Thanks Don, Robbie, and Sarah Mac as always a great show and wonderful information. Can the Fernal book title be listed? I'm not even sure if I have the spelling correct, but I've been wanting to get this book to review. Thanks again.
Knew this was going to be a good video as soon as I saw the wall of guns.
can you go over what can and what should not be stored in crawlspaces? I live in the south east not for from your location. often wish I could throw bulky things under there such as paper towels and toilet paper, water jugs, etc. but feel that a lot of the things may have issues in that environment.
I like your back wall.
Regarding storing water in plastic water bottles, the type you get at the store, you need to be aware of the expiration date on the plastic bottle. The water doesn't expire but after the expiration date, the plastic starts to degrade and leech into the water. Glass or metal is better as it doesn't degrade but you still should filter or rotate the water. The caveat is that glass and metal are heavy.
First comment!! Thanks for your hard work!
This video hits some of the points.
There are very good reasons to use a minimalistic viewpoint if you live in an urban apartment. That needs to be balanced against having enough supplies to follow Red Cross and other advice to prepare for emergencies that you are staying thru the first week(s) of an emergency. You will want to keep your priority items to what you can pack without drawing unwanted special attention. It is less than a carful. What would you take if you had to leave your apartment, with no promise that you will be able to come back to move more of your things? What things are important?
Apartments often bar open flame items (candles, grills, cookstoves) and flammables like gas canisters, charcoal, etc.
Water beds are bared in many building because of the structure weight. That is something to keep in mind when moving items into an apartment.
Storage Buckets are great for food preps
Stackable, low profile, and if you do it right, they keep for decades
I like glass jars better. They're harder for mice to get into.
I live in a small apartment. Space is a huge problem, therefore interior planning is important. Get lots of storage system which can stack up till the ceiling.
Sounds like you are doing great as storage systems that "stack to the rafters" is great advice! Blessings!
Why do you believe you need so much?
We live in a 2BR condo. There's plenty of space for food, extra blankets, and other supplies. Just get rid of junk. We live by lakes, and a river. Tina, Al's wife
I live in an apartment. My main concern is security because the office managers and maintenance have keys. I depend on them being honest. Will they be honest during SHTF? I pray they will! 🙏
Can you push a heavy piece of furniture against the door? If somebody had keys to my apartment I’d do that, or prop a chair under the doorknob, anyway, just to be on the safe side.
@@crystalbluepersuasion1027 They can enter for "emergency" purposes when I'm not home. It happened 2 months ago. I came home from work and saw my front door open a few inches. I was freaked out at first, thinking someone broke in. And I was afraid my cat might get scared and run out the door. They entered because someone's water detector was beeping. Turned out it was my upstairs neighbor's water heater leaking. Our water heaters are in storage rooms off the balcony, so there was no water damage. Anyway, good idea to put something heavy in front of the door - perhaps at night.
@@valerier4308 I really think you should Valerie especially since you are female.
@@crystalbluepersuasion1027 I could move my couch in front of the door at night. But, I also keep 2 big TASERS near me.
@@valerier4308 That’s good. I don’t want to scare you but I do think you should take extra precautions since maintenance has a key to your apartment. When you lay your head on the pillow you need to be sure someone can’t come in on you when you’re asleep.
People in China are painting their roof tops with blue painting. I think they are doing that because direct energy weapons don't burn blue rooftops. There was a home in Lahaina that didn't burned because the rooftop was painted with blue.

A can of Sterno fuel & a ceramic/clay pot to capture/radiate the heat would work wonders.
About those totes, they sound like the same ones I got from Canadian Tire (with blue lids), and yes they are strong and sturdy but the lids are way too hard to get off once they click on. I have to find things that will pry them off. Those yellow-lid ones you're talking about from Home Depot and Walmart look like they are the same. I can't get those lids off with my hands. They need a pry tool for those.
There are really good ones with the o-ring that come with the screw on/off lid. No tool required (wax on, wax off 😆 ).
@@loganwolf2037 Thank you for the tip 👍
Have you done videos on on security for windows? I put 3” screws in my door because the screws that were in there was so short! Then I put these metal things that hold a 2 x 4 on each side of door. I’m wondering if you could figure out some kind of wire or bars to put on windows? I’m on a budget but need to feel safer!
Use a long dowel/broomstick (cut to needed length) for sliding doors/up-down windows to impede movement. For push out windows with handles, wrap a strong wire around the handle stem and tether tightly to the side and wrap around an anchor point.
Get a manual bike pump, I have one 20 bucks great investment.
Asking the crowd....
My brother is in an apartment. He's not good with multiple step tech/mechanics. He uses a CPAP, and we are in hurricane territory. What is an inexpensive complete solar kit that can run his CPAP. Run, as there is no battery to charge.
How much power does the CPAP pull?
I’m surprised by the MSR Guardian reviews (mostly 1 star) after seeing its recommendation here.
Microgreens with an apartment window sill can grow a lot of food quickly.
How much canned / dry food should I save for 2 people?
That depends on how long you're planning to feed them, and what they're going to be doing.
I'm working on storing up a hundred pounds of grains, a hundred pounds of legumes, and 365 cans each of vegetables, fruit, and meat for my wife and I with the intent of feeding ourselves for a year, reducing appropriately if we add more to the group. I live in a food-producing area with quite a few farms nearby, so it's rather unlikely that I'd need more than 3-6 months of supplies.

Its illegal to carry pepper spray in canada and illegal to use bear spray on people. And are trying to ban guns. They really care about our safety here. 🤦♀️ Soon you are going to have to have a permit for having a BB or pellet gun 🙄
I’ve been around guns all my life and I have a conceal carry permit…. But I hate guns and I feel way more confident with a baseball bat and a cattle prod. That way I won’t accidentally shoot myself or a loved one by accident. Hiding and keeping quiet would be my go-to if the TSHTF. Those are a few ways to protect yourself especially if you watch and listen. We do travel, with pistols though. I think you should keep some bear spray handy in your home, if somebody breaks in on you the law would be the last thing I’d be worried about.
@Crystal Blue Persuasion The way the law is, if an intruder hurts themself while breaking in, you are liable, not them. Our system is so corrupt and caters to those breaking the law rather than those being victimized by it 😞
