Also, imagine all the family's that weren't like Sarah's. Maybe kids woke up in the middle of the night to see their parents eating each other, only to have the parents slaughter their confused and shocked kids. The world got really messed up in this universe, it must have been hard going door to door clearing homes during this pandemic
That's why they didn't go door to door
They walled up the Quarantine Zones and bombed everything outside of it. There was door-to-door checks within the walls I’m sure, but most of the outbreak was handled via sacrifice.

I always always wondered how the government failed. That one army soldier took out 3 runners without breaking a sweat, I can’t imagine the entire army being overrun so easily.

Not to mention that even when there isn't a crazy viral (yes, I know it's a fungus, but viral rolls off the tongue better) outbreak, the government kinda doesn't know what they're doing (at least the US government, lol).

oli wong I wouldn’t become a runner on the first day because I served in the army for 6 years and I I have done boxing for 12 years jujitsu for 7 and kick boxing for 3 years and I’m 33 years old so I disagree with that also my whole life I have thought it would be cool even before tv shows about stuff like this and video games too so I would also disagree with that. 7:52 Words can't describe how terrified I was seeing this part when my older brother was playing. I was pretty young back then and I could handle gory stuff and whatnot. But throughout the opening of the game, I was so unsettled from the minute I saw the newspapers, explosion in the city, and infected Jimmy. The whole music during the car drive was so intense and building up that I got ACTUAL chills. 6:32 I legit almost lost it at that moment seeing the crashed blood-stained car but refused to show the fear on my expression and proceeded to continue on watching. And then ultimately at the traffic part when the guy gets munched on by that infected hospital patient, I aborted the mission staying in the room. My brother immediately made Sarah look away for my sake not seeing the carnage saying "I remember this scene from playing the non-remastered version on PS3." Although I didn't see the horror, I could hear the terrible muffled screaming. I flinched in horror faking a shocked laugh to try to not expose any hint of my absolute fear. I remember looking in my mirror on my desk seeing my jaw irreversibly dropped. My little bro playing on his Nintendo was somehow not horrified which made me feel ashamed of myself. After my older brother had to pause the game to do a chore outside, I simply stood up and walked away into my sister's room completely emotionless and basically traumatized. I couldn't clear my mind no matter how much comedy I watched that night and could barely sleep. I'm still pretty frightened of this opening till this very day. The whole outbreak is so well done and the atmosphere is truly horrifying.

Brings me to tears every time, and it’s been years.
One of the things that gets me the most about this scene is the part where Sarah’s in the car with Tommy and Joel, and all you can do is look out the windows. It taps into that childlike fear and dread that a lot of us had back then; the feeling you get when you’re in the backseat with your parents in a car and you’re lost, or something bad’s happening around you. The uncertainty, the dark windows, the glowing radio display, the panicked voices of Joel and Tommy up front, the lack of any control, it forces you back to those memories, and it forces you into Sarah’s shoes. One of the most effective, realistic, and scary opening video game scenes.
Dang I didn’t realize that 20 years had passed between the beginning and the actual game itself.
This is without a doubt one of- if not even the GREATEST opening sequence in video game history.
One of the best openings to a game ever.

If you didn't at the VERY LEAST feel bad for Joel, then you straight up have no soul.
You know, as a gamer, I honestly feel as though I have seen it all, I think many of us feel this way, but when little Sarah here gets shot, literally sprayed with bullets -- then of course with the combination of her shriek-like screams which is immediately met with utter muteness -- I get emotional EVERY SINGLE TIME I watch that particular part of this masterfully done video game intro. There's a shit-ton of zombie video games out there, but this franchise, this particular property feels way different. Wouldn't you all agree?! Shit, now I need to fix my damn makeup...
I've seen that scene in the game countless times, but when I saw it on the show yesterday...it still fucked me up good.

Obviously they can't follow the game scene for scene but they've done a really good job. Biggest complaint is episode 3. I was really looking forward to bill's town with all the traps and joel being upside down fighting off infected. Other than that I think they've done great while also expanding and adding things

Man, for some reason I thought this was The Last Of Us 2 gameplay and got super excited then saw it was the the original opening scene and was still excited! Hahaha love this game so much! Wish I could experience it for the first time again

My theory. Joel tucks Sarah into bed, he goes downstairs to get food and watch a show, but then he hears weird noises, maybe screams next door. He goes over to check and see what's what. Joel goes to the Cooper house and sees Jimmy killing mauling his family to death. Joel gets jumped by Jimmy but then is saved by the dog we hear barking. While Jimmy kills the dog, Joel runs into his backyard to get back to his house. I love this story telling, let's you think
maybe after he tucked Sarah into bed, he went to watch the news, than heard about what happened. He went to go check on his neighbours to make sure they were ok, when he went to the Cooper’s house, no one answered the door. suddenly he heard screams, he decided to go inside and saw Jimmy eating his family. Jimmy than chased after Joel but got distracted by the barking dog.
I took it as more Joel went to bed, and at 2:00 AM, was woken up by screaming from the Coopers’ house. Joel probably tried to call 911 but due to the same thing happening all over the city, the line was busy. Upon going to the house he sees the mutilated bodies of the family, jimmy is nowhere to be seen, the house is completely dark. Joel is about to leave, but then the gas leak explosion happens and the dog starts barking, agitating Jimmy and causing him to spot Joel and attack him. Joel runs out into the yard. The dog, sensing Jimmy’s inhumanity, barks at him, but Jimmy kills and begins to eat him, explaining the cut-off bark. Joel then runs into the house and we all know what happens then.
The voice acting was just amazing. Sarahs death with her crys of pain followed by silence was just superb.
Coming back to this after watching the first episode

I wish there were more relationships like Joel and Tess. There's trauma and rage, but there's care and friendship. Solidarity. Who knows, maybe there was sexual tension, it happens to the best of us, but they were partners-in-crime, so to speak. I just enjoy seeing this trust they have. Maybe I just love how blunt and to the point they are ^^;
This game spoiled every other game for me.. now i look for that connection and get disappointed everytime..
The fact that a Cordyceps based zombie outbreak is possible via it evolving to affect humans. Makes it scary. Yet I don’t think a military would get so easily destroyed.

They made it even scarier in the show by implying global warming was responsible for the fungus making the jump to infect humans. The destruction of the entire world and the deaths of billions was all, ultimately, caused by humanity itself.

It’s not possible. Not in the same way as in the game. Even leaving aside how much more complex a human is compared with an ant, cordyceps doesn’t turn ants into aggressive killers and kills them within 4 days.

I remember watching parts of this game a while ago (never played because no console), I live in Texas and until TLOU I'd never seen that kind of environment depicted in games. It was soooo weird to see a road that actually looked like familiar countryside here. Goddamn man, one of the most surreal experiences I've had with a video game.

But just like in The Last of Us, it wasn't the infected that destroyed the world; it was the hysterical reaction of the governments and civilians that enabled the infection to nearly destroy the world.
But remember, this "apocalypse" was pretty weak- only about 60% of the world died/became infected within the first few years. 20 years later, there's probably still around 1.5 billion people still on earth, living in isolated communities. This wasn't a "Left 4 Dead" apocalypse, where less than 1% of humans survive. A LOT of people survived the cordiceps infection.

The old lady might be better here, because it shows you how deadly the fungus is. It shocks the audience when they see a handicapped old lady who can suddenly chase after you are full speed.

The fungus spread so rapidly because it contaminated all sorts of crops that were imported from South America.
I imagine patient zero was someone who lived in South America.
@@mikeyholland150 one of the areas were the hospital in Seattle, they were absolutely ravaged and overwhelmed by the numbers of the infected patients being flooded in.
Absolutely heart wrenching! The only thing that could have had even more emotionally grading is if Sarah turned undead directly in front of him and tried attacking him, then Tommy takes her out.

(Jimmy is breaking the door)
Dipper: Jimmy. Jimmy, just stay back. Jimmy, I am warning you.
Jacklin: Oh, my God…
Dipper: [Jimmy sprints towards them] Don't! [Dipper shoots Jimmy once] Go. Go.
[Dipper pulls Jacklin by the arm out of his office and into the dining room. He grabs her by the shoulders.]
Jacklin: [Disbelief] You shot him…
Dipper: Jacklin.
Jacklin: [Breathing shakily] I saw him this mornin'.
Dipper: Listen to me, there is something bad going on. We have got to get outta here. Do you understand me?
Jacklin: [Nods] Yeah.
[Car lights can be seen shining through the front window.]
Dipper: Mabel. C'mon. C'mon.

[The guard pulls the trigger. Dipper quickly turns and is shot in the side. Jacklin screams and is thrown from Dipper's arms. They both roll to the ground and Dipper groans in pain. The guard hurries toward Dipper and aims the gun at his head.]
Dipper: Please, don't.
[The guard is suddenly shot in the head and collapses. Mabel enters the scene with his revolver still drawn and sees Jacklin whimpering.]
Mabel: Oh, no…
Dipper: Jacklin! Okay. Move your hands, baby. I know, baby. I know… God! Listen to me, I know this hurts, baby. You're gonna be okay, baby. Stay with me. All right, I'm gonna pick you up.
