I will never forget playing this for the first time when it first came out and idk if there's an opening as impactful as this one, just powerful
But then the show adapts it poorly and non gamers gush over how groundbreaking and impactful it is.

Not saying it’s the best show ever but they’re doing well so far with these 2 episodes going on 3. But yes it could be TWD but we’ll see.
I remember playing this with my dad for the first time. This opening was so amazing my mother, who is by no means a fan of video games, stopped doing laundry and watched intently while Joel and Sara ran for their lives.

Not going to happen, that intro costs probably tens of millions and countless man hours to make. Easier and cheaper to just show a CGI scene or something these days.

Play any final fantasy game.. final fantasy 10 is a good one to start with.
The car ride was so intense. The three of them freaking out and slowly seeing things break into chaos around them. The three of them are digesting the situation differently and trying to communicate but are also sort of caught up in their own world, it’s weird.
Sarah: “what are they runnin’ from?”
Joel: “We can’t stop here Tommy.”
Tommy: “I can’t fuckin’ drive through em Joel!”
Joel: Then back up then!”
Tommy: “They’re behind me too!”
I loved how hectic that exchange was. Felt very real.
Still waiting for a TLOU 2 PC release...

The realistic strenght of the emotional punch that this game gives you. Thats it's true power, nothing else comes close.
It's not true power, this beginning is designed to appeal your feelings nor your appreciation; it does not seek to enrich your personality or even give you a way to address a problem, it's whole point is to make you feel bonded with the character which by the way takes 0 skill to do that.
PD: the hardest part is not the writing and execution but the animation, voices and so on; factors all of which do not rely on good writting
Beyond: two souls comes pretty close. But this is still better

Rarely has a moment in a game strike me the way the opening of this game did. They re-enacted it very well on the tv show as well.
The TV episodes fell far short I think. The simple dialogue in the game was more impactful because it was designed to be less is more and it had subtlety which made it charming. They dragged it on in the TV show. It was irritating.

@@dominos6576 nope, it was a different take on the game anyway and provided more details as to how the watch was fixed, and the early signs of infected, to me it wasn't even a drag and 80 minutes felt like nothing

i remember reading a comment before that said something like - the thing that affects joel the most in the prologue is the fact that sarah didn't die to infected, she died to a perfectly healthy human being: someone who was supposedly going to keep them safe and could've gotten them the help they needed. ultimately, the guy was just following orders. however, the betrayal of the government and those supposed to "protect" is scarily accurate here. they were supposed to keep them safe and he ultimately ended up killing an innocent girl and even wanted to kill joel, an innocent guy if it weren't for tommy stepping in ofc.
There was zero reason for the military to take chances. They already lost complete control of the area. They were stretched so thin that only one soldier was walking through the woods instead of a squad
@@itsmrbigsmoke862 even then military people understand there are times you have the right to refuse an order, or you get what happen in ww2 in Germany. Before you say they would be killed for doing so remember a few of them did so and lived to tell the tale still, anyone who blindly follow them 100% without asking anything no matter what it is to begin with is the most deadlist being right there.
he could have fired a few shots in the air and lied, he could have just join them to protect them, he could have done anything else. But he choice to kill someone that didn't have weapons a girl who was clearly not turning but hurt, all because he was willing to pull the trigger to follow an order.
when things go south like it did here you see who they truly are under all that layer of being civil.
The worst part of this is that all happens on the morning, I think that in the day you can feel more comfortable, but in the dark, waking up and then suddenly everything tearing down, just sh¡t.
This is the most powerful emotional openings to any game ever made. Gut wrenching! This game is truly a masterpiece of storytelling!
But playing it on PC with cheats, at 2x speed, and 10x speed to skip the long car scene is so much better...
One of the best opening scenes in video game history. You can't change my mind on that.
It is because as humans we get stabbed mentally our emotions become nun yet somebody/something reminds you what it felt to have those feelings.
this game will forever be held near and dear to my heart. Goes down as my favorite game ever played. 2014 was a good time to be alive lol. also met one of my best friends to date playing this game online together until sun came up on weekends. man to be that age again. 31 now and still love this game
i really wish we saw the apocalpse unfold right before our eyes in more games/movies. Its scary knowing how real it could be

The Last Of Us I first 20 minutes are the epitome of showing the daily routine and way of life of a group of human beings before an unexpected and surpriseful catastrophe that no one could ever imagine. The ingenuity and inability of behave yourself properly towards the potential threath that leaves you with the only option of regress to your basic survival instinct of run to live, just like a prey scaping from the predator. One moment you´re watching TV and talking about a broken watch and a couple of hours later you´re at the edge of death, with nowhere to go or to hide.
Agree, though it would've been great if the intro continued a bit more with Joel and Tommy dealing with the death of Sarah; I sort of hate the sudden skip of 20 years, that's a really long time to pass over which could be otherwise used to develop characters or show us the relation with Sarah or even the mother of Sarah
I still haven’t played a game yet that is as good as this was. When I played it for the first time that intro had my jaw firmly on the ground

Wrong, videogame is all about interaction; do not mistake interaction with spectation which is something that comes from cinema and animation.
Greatest intro might be the first mario (first level) which is at first glance simple, but genious when you comprehend and appreciate by extension the fundamentals.

Great game, after years and after rewatching for at least 6 times the game is still interesting to watch..
the way they animated the character facial animation is trurly a wonder, it set really high benchmark for this current gen console
Never has a game's story made me bawl my eyes out than the last of us it's just an emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end. 😭 Both Troy Baker and Hana Hayes both deserved oscars for the opening scene it's a travesty they didn't.
Just watched episode 3 of the TV show and this intro alone still holds up after all these years it’s just that good
I just noticed they went into detail by changing the soldier’s uniform to a more modern one.
It's even more sad when you see that Joels new watch Sarah gave him is broken again, while she dies in his arms...
In my opinion, this still remains the greatest opening to anything, not just any game, but any show or movie, any story I have ever seen! The voice acting, especially in the final scene, just feels so authentic and real. I cry every damn time! And then followed by the most chilling flash-foward audio montage of society falling apart, it sets the scene for the rest of the consistently emotional and mind-blowing story perfectly!
Everytime seeing this scene with Sarah dying in Joel's arms is so powerful. Heartwrenching.

i never cried for a game before but the start of this game made me tear all up. the impact and emotional impact it caused me . all these years later i never played any of the follow ups because i wanted to keep the memory of the first game and not risk being disappointed by any of the new dlc/stand alone chapters

Technically they know what they're doing but the Cordyceps is making them doing and you have zero control of your actions you're effectively locked in your body with someone else at the wheel but you're watching it

It unfortunately is still held back by the hardware. At 60fps the game renders visibly blurrier than the fidelity mode. Already hoping for a PS6
At the beginning i knew that sarah was going to die but the way they played it out would have made me believe they make it out alive, like when theyre in the car driving away i really believed that they would be alright ❤

The series is doing great actually giving you the emotions and some dialogues are on point.
Gaming for 40 years. Nothing compares to this for emotional pull. How the heck did a game bring me to tears? Tbh pacman was gaming, if I was teleported from 1982 to now this would not be a game. I suspect I won’t be around to see what constitutes a game in 40 years time!!!

Game did not bring you to tears, movie and cinema did it; this whole scene is based upon principles meant to work on cinema, not in a videogame because it relies upon interaction which in this case it is poorly designed (mechanically speaking there's nothing innovative and other games pulled off a much better apocalypsis scenario)

And this is why for me, this is one of the best game developers out there. Sticking with one console branch, prioritizing quality above all. The story telling was next level back then, and it still is today. My personal favorite game!

its like the rarest part to see in video games or movies. Biggest one that comes to mind is Dead Space 2 or talltale walking dead game.
Don’t have a game recommendation but the first few episodes of fear the walking dead will always creep the hell out of me if you checked that out yet

An absolute masterclass and probably my favorite game of all time based on this “hook” intro, the believability of everything, and the realistic gameplay.
