- It's small and simple but still a nice stage of the build to raise and peg the green oak frame. There are a few details that may be easier to explain in a future video but wanted to get an update out on the project.

I’ve been following your channel for over a year now. I got into DIY at the ripe age of 32 last year, after being sick of renting, but not able to afford a brand new modernised home, so had to go for a renovation project, in which I now live, but it is in dire need of work. I was thinking of starting a channel to document all the work done, before and after, etc.
Love the work you're doing to the house Tim. Rarely comment but easily one of my most favourite channels on UA-cam. Good effort 👍

Have you ever considered pushing the wooden pegs in with a clamping/Nice mechanism rather than bashing them in? I saw one of the timbers against the wall shifting a couple of mills laterally as it's peg was bashed. It can't be ideal to side load the wall fastenings like that by bashing. There's a fine line between construction bashing and demo bashing.
Good stuff, working with wood is quick and efficient, can't wait see end result ....

Whoa… deja-vu… I’ve been using that orange saw to chop up 3x3” dunnage into firewood for the last three months. Sadly, today I got an RMA to ship it in for repair. Untill this week it was an awesomely performing saw, and the metal blade cut through the 10” spikes like… well, not butter, but certainly as if they were hard cheese. These boards had been tacked together to make 8’ x 4’ rafts, and the slider made short work at cutting them up while still in a unit. (I did have to make a table to handle all this material… but I have literally truckloads and truckloads of this “waste” wood.)
And today my retailer just exchanged it over the counter... awesome.
I do love that if anyone is new to the channel and hasn't seen any of the timber videos previously, they're probably thinking 'what is up with the Goliath hammer' haha

Hey Tim, I have a few of questions if I may… firstly how’s the porch holding up? I’ve recently built some green oak outdoor steps, I noticed you’ve put a DPC membrane between the pad and the frame - do you find this allows the water to drain away sufficiently so the oak isn’t sat in water? Have you treated the oak or left it to silver? How are the stainless bolts attached to the stonework holding up? I want to attach the steps with SS coach bolts into the masonry, but read the twisting and shrinkage from the green oak might pull the wall apart?! I’d appreciate any advice. Thanks
Would it have been possible to put the outside inside the oak frame?. That way you see more oak frame, or isnt that a good idea?. You gave me an idea for a kitchen counter/ bar idea with this hehehe.
Usually one would place all insulation or sip panels etc outside the frame so it’s all exposed inside and you get a continuous thermal layer on the outside of oak. Because my footprint is limited I wanted to maximise floor space but I’ll explain it all in a future vid.
I'm a tradesman in the US. I was watching without sound so maybe I missed something. What's the purpose of timber framing if you're not going to show it off? Looks like a combination of traditional and modern. Don't get it?
I thought that, makes the nice job done on that frame a bit of a waste.
No reason, I.e I could have done the lot in stud work however this design will still leave all the frame visible from the inside. I will be building a much larger oak frame next year so was a sort of warm up too. There is also a limit on my porch size for planning here so had to insulate between the posts rather than all on the outside. Explained more in future video. 👍

I did a oak raised bed along back fence which looks great if I say so myself so maybe I'll consider an oak porch.
What I'm wonder though if why the pegs are.. well peg shaped rather than a fixed size dowl?
They are tapered to allow them to drive through and bend around the offset holes. They are also much stronger when split following the natural grain of the oak rather than just cut into dowels.

Where the oak post is fixed to the stone wall, why didn't you use any form of DPM or treatment on the oak to stop the humidity from the stone wall damaging that part of the structure? Just curious
Not much of the oak is in direct contact as the some is so irregular. The dpc carried up the wall for the lower section and then the breather membrane was brought through higher up. Neither of which are really needed and possibly just as likely to cause issues by trapping moisture between plastic and oak.
That oak frame is amazing artistry. What is it you do for your day job?

Any reason you didn't put in some foam tape or some expansion anti draft stuff between the oak up rights and the wall ?
No reason but there is a scribed oak board on the outside and the internal battens and plasterboard where I will probably seal it off with the expanding foam tape I used on the roof light this week. 👍
Now I really see the trade off that evolution saw blade/ miter saw comes with. The cutting speed in wood is sooo slooow.
It’s got me through for 12 years but I wouldn’t buy another. That said, I imagine the newer models are better.
@@TheRestorationCouple I quite understand, that this machine gets the job done. All I'm saying is that it is not the fastest. The newer models might be better, but are not faster.
With 40 teeth 12" saw blade and 4500 RPM ( no load speed) machine I'm able to cut two times thicker material in the same amount of time( of course without a tearout). .
BTW I wish I was as well organised, as you are. What I really love about your channel is that you are not chasing the micrometers when it comes to framing:)
Mortern I guess the other thing with this more traditional style mitre saw is the clearance needed behind it. Most likely I’ll look at the Bosch or Hitcahi next so it can be up right to rear wall in a workshop situation. Like you say, it gets the job done though and still perfectly suited to a DIYer.
Hello, I see you use a Ryobi finish nailer and a hikoki framer....would you say the cheaper Ryobi compares or does it show its cheaper value? Thanks
Love the ryobi and it would be overkill for me to spend hundreds on a better brand finish nailer for the amount of work I use it for. That said I have only used a couple of 18g nailers so not much to compare to. Obviously the framer is a different animal but they both do the task they are needed for.

beam directly on the concrete? You need a welded rail and spacer between beam und concrete. Foil is not an option^^

Road, privacy, coat hooks and we store our bins that side. The whole front and roof is pretty much glass.
Hey Tim! When you fixed the oak to the wall, did you line the back of it with anything to stop water getting trapped inside the wood?
I'm fixing a gate post to brick and wondered if I should use silicone or back it in something. Any advice from the belts and braces man himself?
My personal opinion would be to leave it as it is especially with the gatepost. Any attempt to seal would likely trap in moisture rather than keep it out. I did put a expanding tape near the internal surface of the oak but that was more for draft proofing. The outside was just scribed.

Why wood that rots not brick?
Wood doesn’t rot if you build it right and keep it dry. There are thousands of timber buildings still standing that are hundreds of years old. That’s said, We could have used stone to match house but due to the size limits of a porch, cavity walls would have used up lots more of the space whereas timber can be insulated between resulting in more space inside.
