- This is a quick video of the start up procedure of a Cessna 172. The video is a filler video from the lack of uploads, and it was also a project for school.
Please enjoy the video! Also comment, rate and subscribe!
i know there may be differences or a few minor mistakes done in this start up, i will probably be making a better one in the near future.

I honestly can't help but be jealous of what you guys get to do everyday. Please do more of these type of video's
Thank you very much I am 13 and have found an interest in aviation since I was 3 thank you very much for making this video. Now I can start up a Cessna 172 and 152. I have learnt so much out of this video thank you Green Machine :)
Do not switch off beacon when engine is running.
why?
@@carsonp.7009 Because beacon is a sign that the planet has electricity and might takeoff anytime soon.
@@ivanpatarcic73 oh i see
Beacon light means engine is running and it may harm ground person . In short it means don't come closer until it's off.
@@Catchthevibes2.0 👍👍
Wow, when you connected us to your headset it sounded as realistic as the real sound of the radio.
im not sure how he had his set up, but he had his coms connected to his recording through his headset, so how he would sound to other pilots using their headsets through the radio, is how hes going to sound to us.
@@kgraebes88 good job replying to a 2 year old comment.
@@Mister_Fancypants well no one answered him
@@kgraebes88 by any chance you know how to connect that type of system, to be able to hear comms?
@@keva3144 no sir, still havent gotten an answer, and havent researched it much. If i find out, i will let you know tho
That's a truly thorough and great resource. I already have my license but rarely fly the 172 since it's so expensive. Need to stay at the top of my game
Thank you for the video. But I think your handling of the priming (mixture) is a little bit off.
Great video. Thanks bud. I'm certified in the C172, but I build all my hours in the 150 bc it's cheaper and slower (easier to build hours), so I needed the assistance in the starting of the 172, bc it is different
This was the perfect video for me
4:28 and equally important, if the engine powers off it would not deter the electrical.
Interesting fact many Americans are unaware of; The "Master" switch is split for a reason.
Americans learn to turn on the battery and alternator together, as if it were one switch, but this is actually not ideal, nor what is intended by the manufacturer. Because of the inductive loading of the alternator, it is actually better to start the engine on the battery, and get it stabilized before engaging the power supply to the alternator. Americans have simplified this task, because it is felt too many electrical power-loss failures would occur by pilots forgetting the ensuing task of powering the alternator, and not going back to their checklists where this step would be indicated. It's not a big deal either way, but it is worth noting that many other countries separate these steps, as was always intended by the manufacturer.
How to turn off the engine
THE STEP BY STEP WAY
RADIO OFF
AVIONICS OFF
ALL LIGHTS OFF EXCEPT BEACON
MIXTURE IDLE CUT OFF
THROTTLE ALL WAY OUT
BEACON OFF MASTERS OFF
THEN IGNITION OFF
pull the keys out .
HAVE A SAFE FLIGHT GUYS .ALL THE BEST
For startup, that little red button down below should be pushed in, or on. That is the fuel shut-off. If you don't, your engine will die at some point. You kept referring to the red fuel mixture knob as the fuel shutoff, which it is not; it's only for enriching or leaning the fuel/air mixture. Maybe refer to card for the entire process, and differentiate more clearly the startup from the shutdown procedure. but, thanks for making a video to help people out.
That's because it's always on so we never worry about it (yes it's on the preflight checklist to make sure it's in). You don't need to worry about it (unless it's off) on start up, you worry about the mixture knob which is how we start up an injected C172
Great stuff. Thanks. I learned a lot from this. Have a happy Holydays
You did not ensure both parking brake on and maintain pressure on toe/pedal brakes. I was at a flying club years ago and one of our members did a start up without checking brakes. After starting, he was so occupied with reading the remaining checklist he didn't look up to notice the aircraft was rolling. He stuck another aircraft's tail and did thousands in damages. He had to pay the deductible, the club's insurance paid the rest. But he was kicked out nonetheless.
É a mesma sequencia do checklist de partida do Cessna aqui no Brasil.
I’m jealous of pilots for some odd reason but at the same time I love them
So many memories
ı coudnt undertstand how did he turned the beacon before bateries on ?
yeh...always use da checklist...for Everything!!.…a survivor..😉🇺🇸👍
What is the "PANIC BUTTON" to the right of the radios?
I’m pretty sure that is a stick-on CO detector.
The red fuel mixture should be pushed in at start up n throttle set to a quarter .
How did you do to connect the conversation to the camera?
Greetings from Brasil...Thanks alot very nice video it solves a feel doubts I had...
I can't remember add the mixture while cranking the engine. Isn't it Mixture Full rich, then crank the engine?
Interesting to push mixture to rich only during engine cranking. All planes I've flown are started with mixture already at full rich (DA20-C1, PA28-181, M.S.880B).
cessna's are started differently. its how it says in the checklist (ive seen multiple), its also a cold start
TheGreenMachine Its a fuel injection thing... Older 172's with a Carburetor are started with fully enriched mixture
Robert Armstrong The DA20-C1 is also injected, and that is started with mixture full rich. So it depends on the individual engine installation. I've also seen videos of old carbureted radials that are started with primer only, and mixture goes to rich as soon as it "catches". I think this is mostly done to avoid flooding, especially of the the lower cylinders.
+pinkdispatcher Your DA20 has a Continental engine which is different from Lycoming. Continental fuel injected you start full rich and Lycoming you start idle cut off. Funny thing about the Lycomings (at least the IO-360) it will start at full rich as well. I don't fully understand how but I think I have an idea.
Says not above 1000 rpm on start than proceeds to let it hit 1500... Maintenance must love you guys!
well I am sorry but the 172 must be started with 1/4 of an inch throttle open and oh I am sorry but I, as a pilot cannot adjust the idle RPM of the engine, if 1/4 gives me more than 1000 I can't help it either, other than to pull the throttle back after start ASAP.
Howard Lau your right, the correct response after the engine fires is to ensure it doesn't exceed 1000rpm by actively retarding the throttle. The reason we do that is to minimize the stress on the bits of the engine that are operating without adequate lubrication on the first start of the day. Try bring a ruler or another measuring instrument on a pre flight one day and actually measure what that 1/4" really looks like. You might be surprised at how slight the adjustment really is.
Believe it or not these injected lycoming engines can actually start with the throttle closed if your quick enough on the mixture.
Ps. Your poh should indicate that idle should be set between 450 and 550 rpm with throttle closed. The same engine in some float applications can be set up to run at 300 rpm or less!
compression ignition i like how you say “retard” the throttle instead of a normal “pull back”
I feel like I was part of the video when I watch this video.
and also why did he turned off beacon when engine was running lol
Nice one
does the 172 have power outlets? i use my ipad for foreflight and want to charge it during flight
No
So, on this model the primer is a switch instead of a lever?
This one is fuel injected model, it doesn't have primer pump, you prime by opening mixture, throttle, and after running fuel pump you watch the fuel flow. That's the procedure for a cold engine. On hot, you just crack the throttle 1/4", mixture idle/cutoff, you crank the engine and advance throttle once it fires up.
My Cessna 172s shutdown check list says turn off electrical equipment. What's electrical equipment? Thanks
+GWOSAPAT electrical equipment is anything electrical, like avionics. i havent flown in so long its hard to go more in detail without researching it first :/
+GWOSAPAT You bought a Cessna 172 and you're asking what electrical equipment is on a youtube video? WTF O_O
probably flight sim enthusiast
How much fuel and how much air is in it????! Really???
how do you connect the audio ? the sincronize
hiya. does the magneto switch kick back from start to both?
yup
First thing I noticed was no brake check.
Lach Maclean well why do you think the plane is not moving dumbass
ur not a 'dumbass' sir :)

how is it possible that you can turn on beacon light before turning the batteries on?
good question - he didn't he just put them into the on position for when he turned the master(batteries) on.
What's that sound after you press the master switch?
That sound is the gyroscopes (or magic) that's inside the attitude indicator.
Thank you!
+Daniel Watts is that battery sounds
It is like the APU of an airliner which also starts up when you turn on the master switch
+Doc Nathan Land // docnathan No...inside several of the instruments, there are spinning gyroscopes which set a reference point for when you go flying. It's all about inertial changes in your flight.
Clear prop
really god information
0:44 Where is that noise coming from?
It's the gyro spooling up when you turn the master on
FunFlightsHD Does it spin?
+Doc Nathan Land // docnathan it sure does
+FunFlightsHD Is it like the APU of an airliner
+Doc Nathan Land // docnathan nope. Just powers the heading indicator, turn coordinator and artificial horizon
Why do you yell clear outside for?
It announces anyone near to stay away or “clear” from the prop before it starts. Just a safety thing but mandatory.

Pretty easy. Where's the ejection button 😆
It is a check list. Not a to do list.
Hold the bloody camera steady. Its no use waving it around all over the place

1:20 i hear lil peep
Autopilot
You forgot your magneto balance checks :/
Magnetos are checked during engine run up.
It doesn't sound right to me
i dont really need a checklist, all of the steps are planted on my mind
its called a checklist for a reason, not directions. its illadvised to not follow the list, even if you are a very experienced pilot.
@@kgraebes88, I dont think he is a pilot (just a troll). However, the 0.1% he is a pilot... well they have proficiency checks for a reason, he will probably fail them.
Yeah until you forget a few steps and end up on the news
CLEAR THE PROP
Commander Thorn no... "CLEAR PROP!"
too shaky
I would definitely not fly with u LOL
ur procedures are all wrong
How so?
Things not explained well and items during start up such as breakers that are skipped over. Think this was made quickly. A physical checklist is always a must in GA flying. This way you don't forget anything. Anything less is dangerous.
Yes he does have a checklist but very little attention was given to it. Maybe practice before hand. I do like the radio connection though.
Hah ya i was thinking the same thing. he needs some training.
