    Glad to hear, I'm not the only one with symptoms like these. I was scared something was wrong with me. Some days I really get a strange pressure in my head when I'm singing. Or I run out of breath quickly all the time and feel very exhausted by singing. It's strange.

      Josh Horváth me too. I push up through the mask and end up raising my cheekbones and scrunching my eyes to reach the high notes with volume. It’s a full facial workout and a sinus headache starts immediately.

    CURED. Love this. I study physiotherapy along with music and this is perfect. And most of all it's true. When you lock these back of neck muscles and then at the same time compress air, your head starts pulsating and it creates that headache. Love this one Chris. Amazing stuff.

    I used to have headaches while practicing distortion with your vids, but mainly cause I was thinking that I can do a lot while I actually couldn't just yet.. It's getting better, but it takes a lot of self-control, patience and.. Just practice. I recommend your vids to my friends. They love it. Thank you for the content.

    Another helpful bit that’s taken me a long way; stretching. I stretch my whole body, from the feet to my neck and face muscles, so that I’m as relaxed as humanly possible. My stretching routine is longer than my actual practice, and seems excessive, but man does it help.

    I think I had headache once or twice mainly from incorrect screaming technique I guess. At first I had no idea which parts of my 'neck' I was supposed to engage when screaming but eventually I found out my sweet spot and now I am able to scream (and sing) for around 2 hours and do not feel fatigue the next day.
    Excuse me but I am totally oblivious to anatomy of my voice, I just quickly figured out I need to get the exact sound I am searching for while remaining as relaxed as I can. However I do think you got to test your limits first, experience is the key.

    I feel like my screaming technique has gotten more refined over time, especially after Will Ramos inspired me.
    One night I was screaming in my car feeling devastated and most likely over done it.
    Coming home I felt a pulsating sensitivity radiating through my skull and head...
    I was really afraid and tried to contain myself extra to remain calm and pray this pain would subside.
    It took about a month after researching trying to figure out what this could be as it felt like I was in hell, literally unbearable annoying pain just living, even laying down. The sockets behind my eyes were so sensitive. I found that moving my head in different directions modified the way the pain presented itself in my head. I went to the doctor to no success.
    After a couple of physio visits and research I think I found a possible culprit of a tightening at the back of my head near the base of my skull neck region that I worked out with massaging, pressure and stretching. The pain still comes and goes.
    Yesterday, feeling confident, I re-attempted my screaming technique in the car without negative emotion or 'pushing' too hard and I think it re-ignited this discomfort I feel in my head.
    I`m active daily and exercise while eating healthy and prioritize sleep and drink plenty of water.
    Probably some of the scariest moments of my life thinking I'd have to live with this.
    I'm so thankful for the healing that has occurred.

    Thank you, Chris. I was working my way through the going deeper exercises from Discover Your Voice week 3 and I managed to identify the tension in the back of my neck, but no matter what I tried to mentally, I couldn't isolate the tense muscles to train myself to release them. I thought for a minute that I was just pushing too hard and tried lowering the tension from my support and compression muscles, which obviously didn't help all that much. I'm going to double down on the body awareness exercises going forward, that's for sure.

    before i warm up ill usually go to your videos analyzing chester benningtons scream to get a good frame of reference in mind. i also LOVED seeing the interviews/conversations with spencer sotelo & will ramos. absolutely priceless content.

    Chris, Through the years I've had headaches, nosebleeds (on stage), nausea, even dizziness. It took a while before I realized what I was doing wrong. Any chance you could do an analysis of an old school singer like early Steve Walsh? In his heyday he was a consummate belter and mixer with clean beautiful tone and range. Songs like "Journey From Mariabronn" or "The Pinnacle?"

    • @Thresholdmoment
      @Thresholdmoment 2 роки тому +1

      The truth is that you need to learn to sing with the blown-out voice. It's not that you are singing improperly because sometimes to make it sound good it requires that you sing improperly. It's just the way it is. Try singing with more Reverb, Hall one, and don't be ashamed to use it because in a band setting it may sound like there's a lot of Reverb but once the music starts you can't even hear it so you have to turn it up in order to be able to hear it in the mix. Reverb and or delay will not do the work for you but it definitely will help you to do the work more efficiently and effectively.

    There is something else!! your overall condition fitness and oxygen supply to the brain. If this is... or gets low.. like in my case after sort of long covid... you will need to regain your overall fitness before really enjoy fully singing. I am 7 Months out of hard singing.. and doing walks to improve. But still something resonates and leaves me for 2 to 4 days with really strange nausea after singing. This was not like this before. I could sing the whole day without a problem. I'm shure i am not the only one. Thanks!!!

    I’ve been training my voice while driving to work every day for the past year and a half, and for the past month or so, I’ve been starting to get tension behind my forehead, and the last 2 weeks I’ve started to get extremely dizzy, and actually blacked out for a few seconds.(dont worry, I pulled over before it happened!)
    The weird thing is, I dont feel like I’m doing anything different, but it feels like my frontal lobe is being squeezed a bit against my skull… I haven’t been doing this since I had to pull over, and it kinda bums me out, because not only is it a great way to get warmed up, and to practice, but it also helps me at my job as a receptionist, and it helps me unwind after work… So I would really hate to not be able to do this anymore… I’ll try this out, and I reeeeaaally hope it’ll help!!

  • @SurfingSerpent
    @SurfingSerpent 4 роки тому +2

    In my experience, it helps to contract the muscles related to "holding it in". These are the muscles that keep you from peeing or pooing. If you can contract the anus and urinary tract (pulling them inward into your body), while simultaneously relaxing your abdomen area during the inhale, you can create a lot of compressed support and still take in a deep breath. I would also say that flexing the butt does a lot to create support, so that your core muscles don't have to work extra hard to hold yourself up. The abs work way harder than people realize when the legs and butt are not doing their job to support the whole body. When the abs become rigid, a full inhale isn't possible, and it can lead to increasing levels of tension all around the body. In contrast, the legs and butt are built to flex and support the body. You can lean backwards to feel the butt flex, similar to how Chris leaned back to feel the neck muscles.

    I disagree with the premise of this video. The headaches which are just horribly debilitating and painful are in my personal experience not due to muscles in the neck but due to the way that you breathe when you sing. It all has to do with oxygen or the lack thereof. I have discovered something known as the Wim Hof breathing method. After singing a really hard set that took a lot of straining I then take a break as if it were an intermission or break and do the breathing exercises. It definitely brings relief. I believe that if it were muscle-related as he said it would last for days like if you were banging your head but it doesn't, it goes away in a couple of hours or less.

    Hi! I've got an issue. When I practise screaming at home it usually sounds very good, thanks to your videos! The vocal fry is just THERE and it works and the screaming is so efortless. But on my band's rehearsals and gigs I don't know why but the vocal fry just disappears, just like that (even though it seems to be there during breaks!) Then I tend to use my throat to create grit and my throat starts to hurt qucikly. Why does it happen? I got an in-ear monitoring system that I use on shows, so I can hear myself very well. I'm also a rythm guitar player, if that matters. Could you make a video for touring musicians on how to transfer the skills to the stage?

    So which one is better?
    Lose neck or a little bit tight?

      Not all tension is bad... just ancillary/competitive tension

    Why I get dizzy when I sing?

    • @SeanORaigh
      @SeanORaigh Рік тому

      The same reason, most likely. When I would disengage the compression I would get a little headache and rush of dizziness and it's almost certainly from the tension in the back of my neck.

    some questions:
    1) in order to get to my own sound with screams i JUST CANT find AAAANY way to get them out like I want without tension. everything i do while not hurting my voice doesnt sound good at all.
    But I also did not find anything like that on your channel, too. can you go for example with the technique of Tim Lambesis? i think he uses false cord.
    the fry ones are better on you but even those hurt me on the vocal chords at some point
    or if im too relaxed they sound like trash...
    2) how would you describe these headaches? to me it is like directly after a challenging thing it comes like 3-4 times stronger than the worst hangover i ever had coming in pulsating bursts of 5-6 heartbeats of time at the sides of my head above the ears somehow is this what the video tries to fight off?
    3) Its not just screaming even the clean notes... I CANT FU.. FIND the stuff that comes out of me with pressure while being relaxed. I have to power up and what I get is unlike anything I can only do with the limit of relaxation, how do you FIND it relaxed?
    I learned so much additional stuff from you and i can do lots of cool stuff very relaxed but some of the even cooler stuff wont come out remotely without going waaay too hard. Also the screams. theyre just not what i think is proper. frequency too low so sloppy... how to substitude the pressure correctly?

      here severe symptoms too. I found out it may in part related to the overall fitness with regards to oxygen supply to rhe brain. If the fitness is low.. that is.. if you.. by doing any exercise get quickly out of air (like me after sort of long covid) it s going to be really hard to sing and enjoy wothout dizzyness and strange strong nausea. Maybe also Virus related. But in any case its the oxygen that the brain misses.. my theory.. trying to improve overall fitness with walking. Jogging or running not yet poasible anymore. Simce the Corona outbreaks i suspect that lots of people got out of air. Goes for Sports, drumners and of course Singers. Good luck!!

    Hey Chris, this is off-topic, but I'm trying to learn Nettie by Type O Negative, and I'm struggling in the intro with phlegm buildup. As I try going in and out of the fry like Peter does, I can't fry at all by the middle of the second line until I've cleared my throat and spat. Is that a thing that happens when singing/frying at the very bottom of one's range, is it indicative of me hurting myself, or am I just weird? Also, would you do a Sing Like Peter Steele?

      It sounds like some sinus issues! Do you have allergy issues? Drinking lots of water is helpful, and nasal rinses help, too!

    • @franciscodanconia3551

      @@chrisliepe well that just makes all of the sense. I had really bad allergy issues as a kid. I've been taking a 24hr allergy pill every day for the past few years, and haven't really thought about it beyond that. I could very well have some sinus drip that I just haven't noticed. I was thinking my thirty-ish years of trying to avoid even having to speak was coming back to get me, and my vocal chords were vibrating themselves apart or something. I'll give those a try. Thanks for being logical at me.

    You should do a video on autotune, the plague of the industry.
