Is Finance a Good Major? Best Jobs in Finance?

  • Hi! In today's video, I talk about my thoughts on majoring in finance and later having a career in finance. When considering this option, there are two main values you want to evaluate: (1) money potential and (2) happiness potential. You need to be going into the job with your eyes open, and understand that there is opportunity to make a lot of money in finance, but it also involves a lot of time, work and sacrifice to get to that stage.
    I personally majored in finance which led to my first full-time job out of college in investment banking, and felt that my degree was worthwhile since it allowed me the opportunity of having a stable, well-paying job right out of college. However, I also learned the hard way that there were many things I had to sacrifice along the way, and frequently debated to myself whether this idea of delayed gratitude was worth it in the long run.
    If you are considering doing a degree in finance, or a career in finance, I hope you found this video helpful. The end of the video shares a multitude of careers in finance to give you a flavor of the career opportunities at hand. If you are interested in learning more about my experience working in finance, check out the rest of my channel for other videos.

    1:38 That is so true, IB life is like an addiction, the more you are in it, the harder it is to stop.
    And the thing is that most people don't want that lifestyle to end, and you end up giving your intire life to a meaningless job.
    The funny part is that I still wanna get in.😂😂😂

    This was great! I go to college in the fall of this year and for the last year I’ve been researching Finance majors the most. The college I’ll attend has many different types of emphasis (idk how to say it exactly) like energy, banking, management/investment, and real estate. I’ve gone with management/investment emphasis because I’m a little unsure what the rest mean exactly? Could you give me some advice? Thank you!

    Hi Angela. Recently discovered your channel. Great content and videos. Based on your experience, what is your opinion/advice on entering the financial services industry a bit later (late-mid twenties to late twenties) through the MBA route? Coming from a corporate finance background during my earlier twenties, I have my reservations as to if IB makes sense. Especially if I could just very likely end back in corporate finance. Corporate development and PE does sound very enticing and interesting. Would I need to "sacrifice" a few years in IB to open those doors?

    • @angelasunx3
      @angelasunx3  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Fermin - if your ultimate goal is to go into corporate development or PE, you do not have to first go into investment banking if you already have an MBA. Usually people do investment banking first to go into those roles right out of undergraduate. However, an MBA can allow you to go into either of those roles without first having the IB experience. If you are interested in getting IB experience first, would do so, but if not, you can go into either of those other roles direct. I will digress though that it's possible to get into PE after an MBA, but you'll also be competing with a lot of people who have one or two years of IB experience, so it'll be important to get some experience while doing your MBA.

    I wouldn’t recommend studying finance, I’d recommend studying computer science with a finance elective. Even jobs like analysts will be gone in future, it’s going to be a bunch of quants training ML models. Accounting: you deal with past information to generate reports for internal & external holders, whilst complying with your regulations depending on your country. Accouting in general is probably less stressful, but works well if U can do a double major of finance and accounting, to do corporate finance.
      Finance: there different types of finance (as mentioned in the video), but the one that will pay u the most is when you have these skills: high apptitude of (maths, statistics, coding (python, C++) excel VBA.)
