I think it is a shame to have to destroy so much just to have something so pretty...I mean beautiful gems are not a must...Just part of the human need for more money and for people of means to show that they have more money ..

Diamonds appear to be readily available coz it is the most in demand gem and so more people dig for them than rubies, sapphires or emeralds and also diamond mining are highly mechanized and the recovery of diamonds are faster unlike digging for them using a shovel like in most other softer gems. Natural color diamonds for example are supra rare coz you will have more chances of seeing God's face than seeing a natural color orange, violet, purple, red, blue and green diamonds!
In the Philippines designer cultured freshwater pearls can be bought for $10 I guess they're from China. Does your family still operates pearl farms in the US?
