Burma: Gem Adventure of a Lifetime

  • The gem-rich Mogok region of Myanmar (Burma), from which some of the world's finest Rubies and Spinels are sourced, has been off-limits to foreigners for many, many years. In late September 2019, Gemporia's David Troth, Jake Thompson and Steve Bennett were made an offer they couldn't refuse - to finally enter this most secretive and magical of gemstone mining areas. Thanks to our good friend Roshan Gyawali, a fifth-generation miner whose family have roots stretching back hundreds of years in this region, we were able to secure seldom-granted permits to tour the area and see with our own eyes the places, processes and people behind these wonderful gemstones. Ever more remarkably, we were granted permission to take our cameras with us and capture this rare opportunity on film. Join Steve, Jake and David on this trip of a lifetime as we step into Mogok and explore this remarkable place.

    Corundum(ruby and sapphire) are some of the toughest gems. Meaning that a diamond will break in a vise before a ruby will. Corundum has good hardness for a good cut and polish. Spinels are way softer and more fragile than the ruby and sapphire.

    • @ravisoodi
      @ravisoodi 2 роки тому +1

      Nonsense. A diamond is 10 on the mohs hardness scale, corundums are 9.

    • @h2s142
      @h2s142 Рік тому

      Hardness vs toughness two different measurements

    • @h2s142
      @h2s142 Рік тому

      The toughness scale measures the work required to separate two surfaces of a crystal along a certain crystallographic plane. Values range from 225,000 for nephrite and 120,000 for jadeite, considered very tough gems, to 600 for corundum, which is not as tough.
      Values for diamond generally range from 5,000 along the stone’s cleavage planes to over 8,000. Even though diamonds are considered tough, they can break more easily in certain directions, and a hard blow can cleave or fracture the gem.

      I have red spinel on my finger right now...it makes me sad to see how hard the work was to mine it. The people mining are living in poverty! Too many middle men and jewelers getting rich...

    • @gabib.1780
      @gabib.1780 3 роки тому

      I'd be more concerned for the rest of the people in Myanmar who weren't born literally on top of a gemstone mine belonging to their family for generations. But surely it's true that those at the base of any supply chain do the most physical work and seem to have a lower quality of life. Yet many choose to still do it rather than venturing into the world and trying to add value somewhere along the chain, their job is safer than a middle man's.
