Great video. My old stomping ground. I know every step of your journey. Fished in the Figure of 8. Foolishly went on the the ice too. Walked the Corby Tunnel from the Gretton entrance right through. We had to stand in the tunnel recess as a train passed through. Walked the top of the Welland Valley with my old dog Bouncer (neighbours lol) when a Lancaster Bomber thundered through on a low flight path. You brought back loads of memories. Thanks again for the great local video.
Fifty years ago I walked South from Oakham and into the Welland Valley from the North and was overwhelmed by the experience. A few years later, I was taking a train from London to Leicester and it had to be diverted from the usual route and went over the Harringworth viaduct. At that time there were no scheduled passenger trains on that route at all so it was a very unusual experience. That part of the East Midlands is amazing to visit because of the hills. These have also kept the traditional patchwork of fields from being turned into oversized agricultural monocultures. I have since visited the viaduct on foot on two occasions and hope to return soon. I have read that if you go along the top of the viaduct you can see children's hand prints in some of the bricks made when the the clay was still wet.
The two lakes are known as pen green balancing lakes. the Brook would rise up and spill into the lakes. Once the Brook level drops the pump auto starts and pumps the water back into the Brook. There is a float switch on the Brook for this. The white building on the playing field is a sewage pumping station. The road you walk along past the skip company is known as pen green sidings. yes corby power station (now shut down). yes I am local to the area and can show you much more. including the slipton iron ore mines.
Wow now that's an epic comment. Yh I have been wanted to visit Slipton for a little while now. I visited 2 years ago when everything was extremely flooded but I never returned.
The pipe that you have come across was used for the distribution of compressed air for the drills used either for drilling the overburden probably limestone and in the bottom on the Ironstone. The first of the big walking draglines a 1150 BE (Bucyrus Eyrie) was used at Brookfield quarry. This was before the W1400 series draglines were built.
When you stopped on Heritage Way at the 'gate' in the fence - with the slope down to the tracks....that was put in when two trains got stuck due to flooding and land slip from those ponds above....they had to put that slope in to get folks off the Derby to St.Pancras train - was in the news a few years back.
@@PurpleVision23 No worries....ant the bank track you spoke of earlier, that went up and over the tunnel - my dad, who worked on the traffic at the works for many years, told the story that there was a miscoupling of lead bogey on a line of wagons which resulted in said line of wagons heading toward the tunnel out of control - alert signalman threw points to direct wagons up the bank just in time. Old man also gave up ciggies whilst on traffic...took a draw whilst up on the footplate...had a coughing fit and promptly fell off - if he'd gone off the other side he'd have gone under diesel shunter coming the other way...fags went in firebox when he got back on board.
great video bro! this is my second watch 😁 cool to see Corby from you're perspective, very knowledgeable and its usually nice 🤣🤣 also if you ever want to go back and check out the Corby side of the tunnel 17:17 Im sure a gap in the fence will appear 😉🤣
A great video Purple and a good day for exploring, even if a wee bit chilly, that view of the Welland valley is stunning. The mineral railways closed with the steelworks in January 1980. The water filled gullet next to the trackbed is Brookfield East Quarry. The railway bridge under the Corby - Gretton road was backfilled in the early 80s. Walked this section of the railway with Eric Tonks and other members of the Industrial Railway Society in 1986, it's a bit more overgrown now, but it really hasn't changed that much.
Belter of a video mate, what a view across the valley!! Defo give me a shout next time and I'll join ya for a wander, we've got some hidden relics to find around the old steelworks 😉
There was once an accident at Corby Tunnel which involved loco 31150 being written off, 31150 was eventually taken to Manton Junction, and then Doncaster Works, a sad end to a March Locomotive.

Ah matie you are so welcome. A Lancaster would have been a sight and a half to see. Thanks for watching and commenting 😊

Hello my friend. Beautiful hike, this was enjoyable and so nicely filmed!. Healthy and success always for you...
I'm really glad you enjoyed it
I have actually walked the corby tunnel years ago.
The other portal comes out other side of gretton woods, along side the two vent shafts.
I think that is where I got to by the end of it. Absolutely amazing looking over the Welland Valley
