HS2 Waste Goes Here!
27th November 2024
The final process for an open-cast mine in Warwickshire grabs our attention as it seems that the disused limestone Quarry, that many of us see from the train whilst passing through the town of Rugby, is being filled in after being disused for many decades. Soil left over from the HS2 development is hauled in by train and dumped into the quarry using mega grab machines.
Come take the walk with Ryan and myself around the quarry to Rugby Cement Works and then on to the sidings (Disused Rugby to Leamington Railway) where the HS2 waste train comes in to be unloaded. Using the GoPro, Panasonic Camcorder and DJI Mini 2se I bring you this epic video that i'm hoping will act as a time-stamp for future generations.
The music I've chosen to compliment this video is called 'The Traveller', composed by Jamie Brady and is available to enjoy on his UA-cam channel linked below.

The train arrival and unloading has been edited from the full 31-minute video available on @PurpleandCoRailwayAdventures also linked below.

The music I've chosen has come from my dear friend Jamie Brady's Moodshaper collecti...
Bus rider POV - Wellingborough to Northampton - Stagecoach Route X4

8th November 2024 I travel from Wellingborough to Northampton by bus and decided to film the journey. Passing through Wilby to Earls barton using the failed dual-carriage (A4500) to then using the completed dualcarriage (A45) to reach Northampton itself. The original audio is full of children shouting so i've replaced it with another one of my all time favourite tunes. This one is called Kashmi...

This place has a significant connection Irthlingborough ironstone mine and ...

I visit Stanton Cross to send up the drone over South Hill Farm and collect a time stamp of the progression of housing development that I've been recording for the past few years. Land has been scraped ready for new houses to be built on and new roads seem to be creeping across the land. The Mill Road Public Footpath is still closed and a new order to extend the closure has been granted to the ...

Attenuation basin (New lake) development at Ditchford with extra disused railway scene
Didnt know they were doing that.. and i grew up in newbold
Thorpe Park or Alton Towers in the background maybe as i can hear the rollercoaster 😅
Occasionally, my parents would travel to Finedon to buy us kids' shoes. Finedon is synonymous with shoe manufacturing, and around 1086, it was called Tingdene.
My mum's parents moved from Islington, London, to 19 Valley Road, Wellingborough, in the early '60s. My grandfather moved with his company to Wellingborough instead of searching for a new job in Islington when his company relocated. Mum used to take my sister and me with her to see her parents once a week. I still have a few family members on my mum's side living there. I visited Valley Road about two years ago for the memories. Valley Road and adjacent areas have mostly stayed the same. It was like going back in time.
Had some fun times messing around the quarry and the railway tunnels when I was a kid Loads of stuff to see in Rugby. Didn't know about HS2 spoil being dumped will drag the family down there. Cement works is called Cape Canaveral. We don't see it as being huge as it's just something that's always there. Keep it up 😀
Thank you and i'll do my best
The Blue Lias Quarry, which is now called Southam Quarry, is 12 miles away from your location, and it’s just outside the village of Long Itchington just off the A423
I'm glad i made that little mistake or you wouldn't have come through with that awesome info. Thank you
I wonder how many years it will take to fill that quarry ?
Hi Dave, Your drone footage was great, Shame they could not reopen the Rugby to Leamington line.
Yh it is a shame.
Does that also include all of OUR money they have wasted on this white elephant just to move the high and might between London and Birmingham 35 mins quicker.
Its a white Elephant because it has been cut back and cut back to the point of almost being pointless. Much of the reason for the huge cost is to reduce the environmental impact. For example, at one point the new line passes close to an area of old woodland. 12 species of bats have been identified as living in this wood, including some of the rarest in the UK. To protect the bats the line is going to run through a shelter for just on 1km, next to the wood, the shelter will consist of concrete hoops with the gaps filled in with a metal mesh, too small for the bats to fly through. It was designed, then the Government, changed the design, and added a further two railway lines, for local traffic, the design had to be done again, the current total cost, to protect some bats? £100 million
Nice to see HS2 returning the quarry back to nature
Indeed!
Absolutely brilliant mate. You moved us on April 5th . Rushden .. can’t fault ya
Must visit again soon, visit long overdue.
Definitely. I love it here
Hi Dave i met you at the 2023 Rushden Station Model show, i had a battle of Britain display, Rugby is my home town, the large round tank contains slurry pumped from Dunstable to Rugby to make the cement now that the quarry has finished. Excellent video's Dave,
Ah yh I remember. Thanks for watching
That pipeline was put in around about 1960 I remember seeing it when I used to go to Brafield Stadium, they have to take the flint out of the chalk to stop it from wearing the pipe away before they pump it
I'm moving from Irthlingborough to Rugby this week, it was nice to get a video in Rugby! :D
I'll put all the drone footage together just for you.
They are also dumping the waste in the old Barrington cement works, another quarry owned by rugby cement.🤔
Sorry to sound stupid but where is Old Barrington Cement Works
A “muck depot”.
Yh proper full of s*** 😄 🤣
Also POTTERIC CARR nature reserve in Doncaster used to be railway siding and i believe that there is still some evidence of it, there is an old railway walk for the old Rossington Colliery. Also there is still evidence of old railway siding in ST JAMES CHURCH CAR PARK which is not far from Doncaster Station.
If I ever make it back up to Doncaster at some point I'll be sure to check it out
If you like train spotting you should come to Doncaster, we have 9 platforms 0 to 8 but there are loads of different train operating companies and fraight trains that operate through Doncaster as a lot of lines converge at Doncaster. Also a few miles out of Doncaster is Connisbrough Castle and a massive old railway viaduct which you can get to by catching a local train from Doncaster. You can climb to the top of Connisbrough Castle Keep and get views of the viaduct from there. The viaduct crosses the river Donn and consists of 14 arches built from brick and a steel central area, the viaduct is owned by Sustans and you can walk or cycle accross it. There is also Cadeby tunnel which is not far away which is from a different railway, but i dont know how you get to it, you would have to look it up.
My 3K subscriber special was to Doncaster
Wow amazing how much of the station is left, very interesting to see, i havnt seen this on utube before.
Proper nostalgia trip
Interesting to see where they are dumping the spoil, you can see why they chose that site, its a massive hole to fill, i hope they do landscape it and not just leave it, we will see.
Yh only time will tell
Are they gonna convert it into a golf Course ??
Urghh I hope not. 😉
Cheers Purple, that time of year again?, crickey. All the best.
Sadly yes mate

I used that footpath near the start of the video to cycle to work up until 1964. I think I would also have used to two tunnels at the start of the video to get to and from Newbold Road. The two quarries had been worked out by then. I think the circular tank at about seven minutes is was the tank with a central mounted stirring arm. It received slurry through a pipe big enough to crawl through. Which I remember being installed. It came from workings the other side of the A5.
Yes Jamie Brady tells me the pipeline is very long. He also tells me that a pump station for it is at Gayton near Northampton
Hi Dave. Southam cement works used to be just as good. I think its closed now. caroline.
I wonder if it's any good to walk around. I'll have a look at the maps
the local railway tracks are being turned into walking and cycle routes. caroline. We walked to the works from the canal about a mile away. caroline.
@@PurpleVision23 Would be interesting if you do come to Southam they have opened up a new quarry on the Rugby Road opposite the old cement works where they transport by road to Rugby. Would be interesting to meet you. We also have HS2 works going on the other side of town you might be interested in 🤔
Why was the Land Rover discovery fenced off I need the windscreen, the music reminds me of jean Michel jah from the early 1980s, his China album was cool, fantastic job your skills are much appreciated
There is quite a few down there and I think they belong to the little log cabin at the bottom of the road
That's pats, the man has everything you would want for a old range rover. He was watching you walk down there that's for sure !
Cheers Purple, yes great scenes from Rugby Cement, remember their Lorries, orange weren’t they? The Station used to be busy and the Test House just still in use as I remember. All the best for now and thank Jamie for the soundz.
That's the one. Orange ones. I'm sure Jamie will see this comment
Hey, I feel I know you, but I totally don't, I grew up in earls barton and went to John Lea school, I'm 45! Love your videos! How old are ypu? What school did you go too. Keep up the good work 😊

Why thank you very much Dave. That will go towards the new microphones. What a legend
It’s amazing to see how the churches still dominate the villages even though they’re seldom used. I look forward to seeing more in the series.
Plenty more to come I assure you. In the new year many of my older video will be re filmed and brought up to date.
Noticed in the description the failed dual-carriage - was the A4500 originally intended to be a dual-carriage way and any idea how comes it was never completed?
Yep. I learned it at Wellingborough Museum. Wilby protested and then highways realised it was easier to build further down the vally
Lovely video, looking forward to seeing Rushden
Rushden will be a video of its own. So far I have Rushden Lakes, Washbrook Road and above the old railway station. Still a couple more to collect yet and it may have to wait till spring. Summer and winter footage don't exactly match
@ That is great news. Thank you
Cheers Purple, when you get away from the development theirs some lovely areas about still. Keep going and all the best.🤙
Absolutely Paul. Thanks for watching and commenting
She probably wouldn't recognise ya anyway now ya had ya haircut 😂😂😂

Hi purple 😊 Really enjoyed looking down on these views 👍If you get a chance could ya soar above Irchester and country park including the rail line?BTW was ya with Abbotts at Chippenham close,Mary saw the vans while walking dog but couldn't see ya about 😊
Yh we moved a lovely Indian couple into their dream home bless them
Looks like W’boro has changed a bit since I lived down there in the early 2000’s. The embankment park down by Hovis next to the Nene always flooded and at Billing, the sewerage works flooded and run over the aquadrome camping fields. 🤢🤢
A lot ofpeople moving out of there
How Long was the Journey Purple
roughly 40mins
Excellent video Purple! I always enjoy your videos - informative and your tremendous passion and enthusiasm for disused railways always comes across. I’ve enjoyed your videos around Rugby. Do you think you’ll make a video of the Rugby New Bilton freight line that’s recently come back into use to put HS2 spoil into the old Cemex/Rugby cement quarry? Keep up the good work and best regards.
At the top of my to dos
