    Hands down your complete guide videos are the best pieces of Bjj instructional content I have ever seen. This is the type of stuff I expect from seminars. Must be insane to be coached by you everyday. Please keep these coming. One day I hope to have a game as complete as yours and be able to teach it back to others

    Dude I don’t know what it is about your teaching style that gets me where I need to go. I’m a 5’10” 215 lb life long wrestler. I’m a purple belt and obviously playing guard and all that was never my style. I started watching your “cross guard” & guard retention videos over and over(just those) and out of nowhere I suddenly have a guard. I’m normally a top player but now I find myself looking to go bottom. Good stuff now I’ll check out the rest.

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  3 роки тому

      Wow huge compliment! I’m happy the videos have had that big of an affect. I think a lot of it is that I focus on the positions as a whole which gives overall context, rather than going deep on 1 technique which can leave you confused if you don’t know where that technique fits in with the rest of the position and guard as a whole.

    I really love this! I've been having some great success with this, but also found some trouble lately with two scenarios when they are standing. 1) Person grabs the free leg + removes the elbow space or keeps the elbow at an angle (blocking the omoplata). So I end up in a weird situation where I can't seem to do anything. 2) Big strong guy reaches down with free hand gets grip on back of pants and pulls up, stacking me.

    So comprehensive and easy to understand Jon! One question though -- If they're in a low combat base such that their knee on the same side as the sleeve you grab is up and that knee-elbow connection is tight, can you still apply the attacks? Doesn't seem like you'd even be able to get that underhook on that leg. Maybe that opens them up for an arm drag instead? Thanks for all your great content!

    At 9:31 you're threatening the oomaplata, and he does the standard somersault escape. I usually stay on top to get side control with the arm trapped. You throw yourself into a somersault next to him and take his back. Is this something you or others have covered? It is as simple as "somersault next to him and you'll be at his back?"

    • @JonThomasBJJ

    Do you ever use your same side hand on the tricep or elbow to expose the hip and break posture? I struggle to expose the hip sometimes not so much with cross sleeve but with same side sleeve grip.

    @10:26 can you talk about your grips and how you generate that much slide to get behind the opp? Getting to the first x hook is easy but I’m getting stuck before being fully behind for the crab ride.

      Did you watch my matrix overview video? I discuss the idea of hopping up in shoulder to create the slide, also apply more force with your right ankle behind their knee and pull it should helps move you around

    I really like the cross guard. Do you prefer to get there from your feet or another guard position?

      I usually transition from lasso collar sleeve or from double sleeve.

    Your DLR game seems to rely more on the double sleeve game or using the far sleeve lepri style. When I watched Mikey Musumeci's instructional on DLR its mostly focused at least in the beginning on the classic heel and collar grip. What would you say is the pro and cons of both styles, and why have you choosen yours? Also; how significant difference do you think the pants grip vs the heel grip makes? I feel the more I play around with it , it feels almost like two different guards.

      Both are essential, in general I don’t lock my self into one style of guard they usually all have purposes and utilities when mixed into a broader open guard game. I like the ankle a lot when I flip them over head with collar ankle to go for bolo, I like the pant a lot when I don’t have a grip with my right hand. If I get a grip with my right hand I will often go back to ankle but it depends a bit about what guard I want to play. Ankle grip without a right hand grip can be easily kicked out of if you fight an athletic opponent.

    Also what is a good answer if they are controlling your far leg?

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  3 роки тому +1

      If they control the far leg I usually just work underneath with the x guard series I show in the video. It’s super powerful.

      @@JonThomasBJJ Are you able to get to x guard if they are pulling the far leg straight up?

    • @jacquedegatineau9037
      @jacquedegatineau9037 3 роки тому +1

      If I understand your question, this is something I try to bait them into doing. If they're committed to controlling that leg retract it so that you can grip their sleeve and kick their grip off. You should have a clear path to getting x guard and then the sweeping options open up with their far arm captured.

      @@jacquedegatineau9037 yeah that’s definitely an option as well, if they are standing I kinda prefer staying on cross sleeve if they come down to the ground I like getting the far sleeve especially if I feed the cross sleeve to my left hand. There are many options from the position for sure
