Triads on Guitar: What's the Point???
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- There are a number of videos on triads on the guitar here already, but the thing that many videos miss out is that we need to do more than just memorize triad shapes on the guitar fretboard. When I teach guitar lessons here in Vancouver I always get my students to memorize how the triad chord shapes fit the Major Pentatonic scale shapes. Every chord has a scale that goes with it. This way we can combine chords and scales at the same time, add chords into our solos, or combine short licks when playing rhythm guitar.
In this lesson you'll learn how to play the three most common triad shapes on the guitar using a combination of the D, G and B strings. In our Patreon this week we will study how to quickly shift from the I chord to the IV chord using these same triad shapes, and connect to the Major Pentatonic scale of the IV chord too!
On our Patreon group we will have more licks for each shape in tabs, plus the jam track. Join our Patreon group at / guitarlessonsvancouver

Wow! This is actually more immediately useful than I had hoped! Directly connecting the triads to the Pentatonic positions is great! Thanks!
Thank you! Good point about livestream notifications I've heard that.
I love the idea of livestream videos but youtube's notifications are sketchy at best. But I feel like your audience would ask some great questions so even if I didn't catch the stream live, I'm sure there would still be a lot of good info. Great lesson, Blue!
Another great lesson. One thing that helped me was to look at a picture of the fretboard with all the notes on it. I figure out the root, third and fifth for a chord and just scan the paper looking for any of the the three notes. When I find one I look for the other two and they are usually right there and you can figure out the triad for your self instead of looking at a book. When you search it out for yourself it also seems to be easier to remember. I then repeat it for each note until I do the exercise for all 7 notes.. I need to figure out arpeggios and modes one day...
I have been practicing this video for the last 4 hrs.OMG what an Aha time. I figured out the 4 and 5. This has blown me away, I've been waiting on a video like this for years . CANT THANK YOU ENOUGH!!!!!!
Well done! Congrats on figuring out the IV and V. If you can memorize the closest IV for each of the triads, you've really got it.
I was waiting for a Triad video from you and guess what here it is. and I get to like it as the first one. And yes for the live stream. Thanks
Thank you!
I can tell you’re one of those legendary teachers that really make an impact on their students and create surprising unexpected results
Thank you very much!
A livestream could be very intersting for your followers but don't forget the different local times of your followers. I think you have also a lot of followers from Europe. Like me 🙏
Guitar teacher lever 1000000
Mornin' Blue! A subscriber here.. A cup of coffee and a triad lesson! What could be better than that?!?
Nice! What a great combo 🎸☕️
I'm still in the middle of watching this video and I have learned a lot. Too many videos on UA-cam and this one works for me. No confusions, what a teacher 🫶🔥
Awesome to hear you’re digging the video! Triads can be tricky, but once you get them, it’s so fun to play!
Seriously on point as always. It is abundantly clear that you are here to teach rather than blow smoke. Such a change from all the other so called UA-cam Guitar Teachers. A huge thanks. Champion stuff.
I appreciate that! Thank you!
This is one of the best lesson I have had on youtube, Thanks!
Great to hear, thank you for sayin'!
Hey Blue, live steams would be awesome. You are definitely one of the best guitar teachers on UA-cam! Thanks.
Thank you for the feedback 😊
This video is wonderful.! I knew of but never played a couple of triads but never knew their connection to chords / scales so that I could solo from them. Now this makes sense and I can see the bigger picture as to how this all fits together. I can't thank you enough. I do think a live broadcast with questions and answers would be great. I have ordered both of your playing like a pro books.

Thank you Blue. Finally someone who can explain triads . For me triads was like learning Chinese.
Thank you! Glad it helped 👍
I have been learning to play guitar for years now from various UA-cam instructors, also bought courses. I feel stuck sometimes as an intermediate player, but your videos definitely help and encourage me. I always find a new perspective or aha moment to the thing I already know. Great content and fantastic teacher, thank you! Greetings from Hungary, Europe.
Thank you that's great to hear! If you are looking for more lessons like this you can also try our Patreon www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver
Super helpful and great teaching. Appreciate the explanations of these techniques within simpler contexts. Lots of other great teachers on youtube, but they seem to forget that many viewers aren't aiming to be professional or academic level musicians. This is perfect for the 30 something dude learning as a hobby in his bedroom trying to get past the intermediate plateau.
Cool thank you! There is also this video on Minor chord triads you might find useful: ua-cam.com/video/PMl_-29eO3M/v-deo.html
Fantastic lesson, like all of your others that I’ve played. I totally agree that you deserve far more subscribers and I hope that comes for you. The way you weave in the chords with the scales and triads in such a clear way is quite unique and I really appreciate it. I have happily signed up for your Patreon as a result of these videos - really thankful for your efforts
Wonderful thank you! See you on Patreon!
Thanks Blue....Another stellar lesson. Clear, calm and concise. Hell ya for a livestream😊
Thank you!!
You are a great teacher for a Canadian. Thank you for the lesson.
Thank you! 😃
Good stuff blue. This lesson would have saved me some time experimenting with triads and scales, I definitely put the work in. This definitely opened up the fretboard for me when I learned these concepts connected to the caged system. This should help a lot of players.
Great to hear! Well done!
This video was a gold mine as usual!
Thank you!!!
Absolutely yes for a live stream, please publish when well in advance.
Thank you!

Hi! I'm starting to watch your videos a couple of days ago...I've been self thought for 30 years but I actually never connected things until your simplicity let me understand what I probably knew but as I said after 30 years of playing even in many important gigs I was still in my comfort zone and confused ...you know what I mean
thank you a lot
That's great to hear thank you! There are lots of videos on the channel, and more coming next week. We also have our Patreon group you can try if you haven't already www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver

A live stream would be interesting to try and see. You can make it available as a video after. While the video is not interactive, many players' questions will apply to a lot of other viewers that may not be in the right time zone for the live broadcast.
Good point thank you!
There is a lot of value here packed into 10 min

Great lesson Blue. Very poignant. I’ve had a paid membership to a really good UA-cam guitar teacher for years. Thinking about switching to you but know nothing about patreon. Your lessons are great so maybe I’ll look into switching. Thanks again
Thank you! Glad you are enjoying the lessons here. You can try Patreon out for free for 7 days. The main thing is to follow along with our "Lesson Order Index" which is here: www.patreon.com/posts/96493793 If you have any questions you can message me on Patreon. Thanks!
Would love live videos!!! Also maybe think of patron pkg like year subscription, or lifetime.. You are the best
Thank you! 😀 You can do a 1 year subscription to our Patreon at a discounted rate. You have the choice to pay monthly or yearly. If you already subscribe monthly I think you can switch to yearly www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver

Bring on the live stream! Another good one Blue. Also everyone I pay the lowest price for the Patreon. So come on everyone, sign up for what you can afford. Oh Blue, the bridge humbucker sounds awesome. But your sunburst Tele is still my favourite.

Great lesson! I’d be interested in livestreams
Awesome, thank you!
You got a new subscriber
Great to hear thank you! New lessons here almost every week :)
Live stream would be great.
Love the sound on your guitar, if you are familiar with the spark practice amp what would be the closes setting to get in that ball park?❤
Thanks! I don't have the Spark amp but if you look for a Fender Deluxe Reverb on there you'll be close to it. I also have some tape delay added to it and a touch of compression.
Awesome, thanks for the reply. I’ll check into that. Love what you are doing!! Just recently ordered both of the soloing books.
@@MarcBowen-p1o cool thanks for getting the books too 😎
Thanks for the video! I guess it's also best to know every triads and inversed ones that fit in the scale? (and not just the triads of the name of the scale?). But then, what are their relation (to the scale or in general)? You need to play other triads less often, so you kept focus on the main one that are the scale names? (a guess). Thanks again!
Thank you! Yes I like to think of triads as fitting with a particular pentatonic shape. So when you memorize a triad shape, also try to see the pentatonic shape that it fits into. I have more about that in this livestream video we did a few weeks ago: ua-cam.com/users/liveKQGqJnvegeE?feature=share
Live stream yes
At last practice advice. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent insightful lesson. Until you start doing livestreams can I ask a question? I understand the scales with the first 2 triad shapes but I do not understand the scale with the 3rd triad shape. The scale you are using looks like box 4 of the F#m pentatonic scale. How does this fit with an A triad?
Good question. Every Minor Pentatonic has a relative Major Pentatonic with the same notes. That Shape 4 F#m Pentatonic is also A Major Pentatonic (root on the A string pinky finger). So all the shapes in this triad video are both A Major and F# Minor. More info about how that works in this video ua-cam.com/video/2vXMecfmhdc/v-deo.html
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver Thanks for your reply. I understand the concept of the relative minor. I think what threw me off was that for the first 2 triad shapes you were using Box 1 and Box 2 of the A minor pentatonic scale but then you use Box 4 of the relative minor on the 3rd triad shape. That hurts my brain.
Nice one🤘🤜🤛
Thanks ✌️
Gold. Livestream please! 🙏
Thank you! Your vote for livestreams is noted. Now I just have to figure out how to do it....
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver Haha! I know you can do it! I watch all your videos! Best on UA-cam. I appreciate you!!! 🙏
