Birdwatching is one of the reasons I got a gravel bike. It lets me cover terrain quickly between observing spots, or I could just stop when I spot something. Many of the birds you mention here are species we find in my country (India) too, including the Hoopoe. Cheers.
I carry 2 different monoculars on my chest while riding my Hase delta recumbent trike.
Bird and butterfly watching, even up close, with "close-up lenses" is very enjoyable!
The European Starling is an incredible mimic - from other bird calls (generally quite rare ones when they are in your garden) to car/house alarms and telephone ring tones. The bird calls they do are perfect and fool the bird ID app algorythms.
I've been following this channel for quite a while...this video prompted me to become a Patreon member. I'm not particularly interested in birding...but your approach to your new surroundings, and respect for nature make watching and supporting you a "no brainer". Wishing you all the best in the coming year!!!
I love bikebirding too, Merlin and birdnet work pretty good. Wish you all the best for 2024
I liked the spaghetti Western music. This was different than most bicycle videos. You weren't trying to sell the latest carbon fiber gadget. That bit about killing birds was educational. Could it have contributed to the demise of the passenger pigeon? Didn't folks back then have any sense of ecology? Birds eat bugs. No birds then more bugs. Maybe Audubon biking will be the next big thing. Bon Nadal!
Awesome loop, glad you found the bird booklet useful!
What a lovely ride and a great new tradition! This is the whole reason we started following your channel so many years ago - the rides with you and Laura are our favorite part of the entire Path Less Pedaled - because that's what it is! Great video. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
What a lovely Christmas Day. A ride through beautiful country. Loads to see. The watering hole you stopped at was gorgeous.
You two will definitely get into Catalan life. You are throwing yourselves into it and doing loads of stuff. I’m enjoying your travels.
Merry Christmas.
Thank you for filming and posting this on the day. Happy Christmas and have a wonderful 2024 in and around Girona. Stay safe.
Bike birding is the best. On longer bikepacking trips I usually like to keep my binocs holster on a hip bag strap. It does add some weight, but they are so easily accessible then.
Coffee outside and birding with bike is one of the best method for spending the day. 😄
This has inspired me! I'm going to get some local bird guides pamphlets and organize a Meetup "BCR" bird counting ride, for my local trail the Great Allegany Passage.
So much fun! love your down-to-earth and informative vids. Glad to seeing you adjusting to and exploring your new location. You two are inspiring,
Wow! Have fun and enjoy the winter!! ❤✌🏾
I am not a bird watcher in any real sense of the word, but I do look for certain ones when out riding back roads. Here in Oklahoma I like to look for Bluebirds, Indigo Buntings, and my favorite, Painted Buntings. The latter is one that I see very rarely, but one Summer I spotted a half dozen in a month's time.
My other thing to do while out in the Spring when everything is blooming, is to count how many varieties of flowers that I can see along my route.
We love birds. My daughter had a few parakeets. We got to stand in an aviary at a zoo while my daughter held two feed dishes and lorikeets covered her entire body trying to grab a few seeds.
I used to let our parakeets crawl in my mouth while all my daughter's friend squealed!
I love to watch raptors and carrion eaters out on long rides.
What an absolutely perfect Christmas Day in your new home! Happy Holidays to you both!
Thank you. Just simply thank you for this wonderful video.
Those black birds are a pest in my area of Australia, as are Starlings.
Another excellent video. So enjoyable and so interesting. Thank you for your efforts.
Pretty music !
Thank you for this. And hello from the rainy and gray PNW. It was super awesome to follow along on your bird count while I toiled away on my bike trainer.
Nice tradition of a Christmas bike ride. It's getting too common in the US Midwest though.
Nice to see others appreciate this holiday ride.
Happy Holidays.
Nos monocular in a feed bag is what I use. Quick and easy to grab.
Merry Christmas Russ and Laura!
Merry Christmas Russ and Laura!!
nice vid. Terrain looks a lot like central California, Paso Robles area.
It’s a lot like central CA but without the cars!
"Counting all the birds!" Love that tradition! Can't wait to see some bike fishing.
Happy holidays all!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Birds are beautiful!
Making me jealous 😢. Hope your enjoying Espana
I always look for birds when cycling, and not cycling. Storks are my favorite to observe, and I love flamingos (see them in the Netherlands and Southern France). I was in Egypt for a vacation last month and I saw a Hoopoe for the first time! I was pretty excited.
The Blackbird sings beautifully. You can hear one in the Beatles' 'Blackbird'
Nice helmet. Thanks for the relaxing ride vid. Merry Christmas!
Happy Holidays
Fantastic idea for a vid! Great work.
Thanks for sharing, the tourist bureau should hire you!
Merry Christmas to you and to your wife
Mirlo, one of my favorites 😊
Starling murmurations are a breath-taking sight to behold
What a beautiful relaxing ride❤️👍
Nice way to spend Christmas Day. The territory reminds me of the California Central Valley riverways and the surrounding farmland. Good Job
That was great guys❤
Very appropriate day to be using a BXB!
Very cool! Bird watching seems like a lot of fun.
Merry Christmas
Cool relaxing video, nice.
Merry Xmas !
It's pronounced Hoopoo in England. They are rare visitors here. I've never seen one. They occasionally appear in the south of the UK. I really like this interesting sideline to your bike videos.
Awesome video! Yes, you can get some nice binocular harnesses in the US, and I assume there as well. The Christmas killing thing is ancient history. Your slip-up of calling it 1990 instead of 1900 was too funny. I want to get some handlebars like yours for my Bike Friday. Happy holidays!
At sunrise I was watching and hearing birds on beautiful Lake Douglas, Dandridge Tennessee. We were at Harbor Mountain Inn celebrating Christ's coming with other joyful believers.
Merry Christmas.
John 1:14
Nice bike path. And fun approach to birdwatch while riding. Enjoy.
Love it!
SO fun, almost every bird you saw, except the egret, are birds that are common up here in Sweden too. We have more geese and swans, though.
Also worth knowing is that European bird watchers like going to Spain to watch vultures and birds of prey.
Nice Weather for Ducks here in the Midwest on Christmas Day. A wet Christmas instead of White Christmas...
Superb Xmas day jolly , very exhilarating on that downhill stretch , I'm shaking but no mishaps , and the weather simply glorious pedalling through unspoilt traffic free scenery .
Very lovely and enjoyable video! Being friends with my local city crows, I'm curious what versions of corvids are in your new neighborhood? Happy Holidays!
This must be the most wholesome tradition, makes so much sense to do it on the bike :)
Perfect!
Love the ride and the birding. And admire your bike perfect unrace classic cockpit for the bike nerd. I like a boxy rando bag for binos, phone with Merlin/ebird, and camera for birding. In ‘24 for bike birding, I am going to start packing a pocket recorder to grab calls and song where I don’t get a sighting.
Who composed the music? Great piece It had a “pulp fiction vibe” if that makes any sense.. Happy New Year 🎆 🎊 looking forward to 24…
Hey there, my hubby and I eat our breakfast and lunch daily regardless of rain snow or boiling heat And you are one of a few regular U tubers we watch. We cycle and golf and are retired. So happy you made it to Spain! Looks beautiful. We watch you’s on my hubby’s iPad hence, he usually doesn’t leave comments but he always likes and subscribes etc…so I add who he has on my iPad so I can leave comments lol lol …ok the reason now I’m telling you all this is I would love to know if yous are close to San Sebastián??? We’ve been cycling for the past 12 years mostly road but this past year we started bike packing…we love it …we will be coming to Spain in 2025….and hope to ride with yous…I know it’s a ways away and you don’t know us….butbwe know yous via videos 😅…and we’d love to meet up with yous there for a ride …. Last year we cycled 10,000 km …love to meet up with yous ….cheers. TwoFansFromCanada 👏👏🇨🇦🇨🇦🥰
Russ, is that a modified Take A Look mirror?
😮i never heard of the xmas bird massacre- i've only known of the shooting of the wren...whoaa
My fixie Groad bike is best for wildlife viewing, baring that I just take the quietest freehub bike that doesn't have squeaky breaks.
Russ! Tell me about the helmet mirror that you and Laura are using.
Lovely different vid 🙂.
A couple of questions please.
1. Could you give us a rundown on the bike you are riding Russ please? Love the handlebars.
2. What wrist watch are you wearing please?
Thank you.
Be well and be safe...

@@PathLessPedaledTV Thank you so much. Season's greetings to you both.
Wow. Nice Vídeo, Slow Pedal with envolve The nature. This is real Bike Pedal 🙏🏻
Hi! I'm currently in Girona with my wife for some party-pace gravel biking! I was wondering if you have a link to this particular route? So far we've gone south/east but not west at all, I was curious rather than try to rebuild the route from the picture. Thanks!

This was unexpectedly cool
(nerdy yes, but a nice video)
Oh yeah, bikebirding
You mean the "capture bino"? What don't you like about it?
@@falcoperegrinus82 it feels like I cannot tighten it well enough to my binoculars. Maybe i'm doing it wrong! It's still a great product don't get me wrong. It's just not as perfect as the other Peak Design gear :D
Russ, what brand are your helmet mirrors?
Russ, I am curious: did you get a long stay 1 year visa, and then have to apply again for residency in a year, or? Curious how you guys can stay in the Schengen longer than 3 months?
Applied for the digital nomad visa.
Do you guys use EBird?
I watched you on Christmas.
After your first couple sentences, I could not listen to any more. Just a sense of deep sadness and disgust. The depravity of the human animal is without limit.
Living in UK,some Mediterranean culture astound me
HAving turkey has nothing to do with Christian tradition, in Slavic countries we have Christmas dinner, and no meat is allowed except fish, we have 12 traditional dishes, and before we start, also we have to share bread (like communion wafel Christ body) with all guests around the table.
European robins are very different from US robins!
My wifes local will pretend not to kill foxes on boxing day by riding around the countryside on horses and dogs.
I have nothing against the dogs to be fair
Cbd gummies?
You both better stand by because Spain has many disturbing traditions when it comes to animals
