BLACK RIVER ST.ELIZABETH JAMAICA THE TOWN OF HISTORY
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 сер 2020
- Black River is one of the oldest European towns in the island of Jamaica, being shown on John Sellers' 1685 map. It was designed by the Leyden brothers of England, three wealthy men who were substantial land proprietors in the area.
In 1773 Black River replaced Lacovia, 19 miles to the north-east, as the capital of St. Elizabeth. Soon after it became the main commercial, economic and transshipment centre of the parish. By the early 1900s, it was second only to Kingston in economic importance on the island.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Black River was a busy seaport for the lucrative logwood trade and for exports of rum, pimento and cattle skins from the nearby Holland, Vineyard, and Fullerswood plantations. The Logwood tree trunks were floated down the Black River to the port to be shipped to England for making of dyes.[citation needed]
Into the early 19th century, slaves from Africa and other Caribbean islands were landed here and sold at auction at Farquharson Wharf (originally Town Wharf). This wharf still stands.[2] In 2007, the United Kingdom celebrated the 200th anniversary of the Slave Trade Act 1807, which ended the African slave trade in its colonies.
A monument was installed at Black River in 2007 to memorialize the slaves killed in the Zong massacre of 1781. More than 132 slaves were thrown overboard at sea from the Zong. They were sacrificed by the crew purportedly to save the remainder and the crew because of a shortage of water on board.[3] The Zong finally landed at Black River. Its owners later sued for insurance claims for the slaves who had been killed, and the case was litigated in 1783 in Britain. The court rejected the owners' claim, as it was shown that the crew had made navigation errors that kept the ship at sea and threatened its supplies. Abolitionists publicized it, and the case became a catalyst for continuing efforts to abolish slavery. Britain abolished slavery in its empire (except for India, where it was endemic as part of the culture) in 1833.

Wow, what a superb video of Black River. It was my parish capital for the two years that I lived in Jamaica. I have so many happy memories of St. Elizabeth and Jamaica but also a few sad ones as it was in Black River Hospital that my wife tragically passed away. I must apologize that I have a lot of your excellent videos still to watch. Please keep up the good work. They are very much appreciated.

Pleasant good morning Fire. I'm a proud graduate of St. Theresa Academy, Black River. The building was known as "Magdala" in the hey days. It's another magnificent, historic building (as Ashton Great House). Beautiful orchids grow in the huge tree at the entrance.

OH Yes Mr Fire Reid Lots of Respect to you for Bring This Part of St Elizabeth Black River my Original Town I was looking out for this so long this Place have so much History this Hospital was one of Jamaica best Hospital Doctors from all over the world use to work at this Hospital and it's a very beautiful and amazing big Property it has a Male and Female Ward a Children's Ward, it has a Operation Theater, it has a Emergency ward, out patience Ward, it Own Pharmacy , even it's own Dead House, when you have a family member who has passed away they could keep the body there until the day of final resting place they also have a big Laundry area with Top of the Line equipment, Trust me it was so up keep a mean very clean place, use to employ a lot of people, and then you have a lot of Doctors office close by also, most of that immediate area have a lot of government institutions, very beautiful Place, you can walk from the Hospital along the Sea Road down to the business merchandise side of the town, OMG use to be so clean and Beautiful I really appreciate your work Fire Reid, People might not even know that Black River is one of Jamaican First Port in the Island it holds so much History I think that the Government should Revive Black River to it's Standard, and Build on Top of that I truly believe that we are losing out on some of our most Price Place. Big Respect Fire Reid this one is really a good job well done.🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
hope u enjoy the video
@@FireReid i can't agree more the government needs to put a little interest in that town it is the first place in Jamaica to have electricity.
Now no one wants to go to that hospital. Wish I knew it how you described it.
@@michynature Yes Black River Hospital was was one of the top of the line Hospital in Jamaica but I can tell you that the Government from over the years did not pay attention to that area actually to Black River on a whole right now if Black River did get the attention it would be one of Jamaica best Cities but they don't have any idea what they are missing out first thing it has a lot of History next it has all the Beauty and Land Space Jamaica Government should never lost site of that place.
@@michaelferguson3317 I agree. I would like to see a lot of improvements though I wouldn’t like to see the area become a little Negril but improved for the locals. It’s like a hidden gem if you know what I mean lol.
Good job 👍🏿
your welcome
Fire the guest need a gardener to maintain the entrance. Need to be presented as a 3 star facility at minimum... Upkeep is a very important thing fire, brings out the the best of the town. I love a sea side town (my favorite). Ocho Rios , Runaway Bay parts of montego bay.. I love those towns.
yes they do
Big up fire Reid
bless up sandra
I know there like a book love ❤️ that place
Boy, the leaders are not great thinkers. They should move this hospital to the interiors over to the Bromption area. This waterfront land could then be developed, to include luxury homes, and hotels, but Fire, you are doing big things man.
@Patricia Barnes ok, so, I didn't say the town, I said the hospital. The town of Black River needs to develop and grow anyway. So creating this enclave, would have a multiplier effect. As a matter of fact, the whole town of Black River needs to be realigned. Black River doesn't have to stay the way it is, changes are good.
what u think Norton
@@FireReid Oh, Fire you are doing big and great things brother. Viewers will disagree, but as long as we are respectful to each other everything will be alright. Blessings!
@Patricia Barnes Exactly
blessing real talk
niece place those roads need to be fixed Jamaican mayor do your job
very much
I agree out side the b lk riv hospital I didn't see any trash, but curb appeal needs up grading a sidewalk, flowers, plants concrete repair on the road with a drain system for rain water would be an improvement were are the volunteers and community leaders. Thanks to you enjoying the video of my Jamaica form DC..

People wasting time with their natural resources fire reid... Its a very nice town , it needs some investment. A nice pier here and there would be nice to walk out to and maybe do a little fishing or just lounge and enjoy the ocean breeze.
yes it really need some investment
@@FireReid ...and you know the thing is ,I see the passion you have for your parish and I respect that. These are the projects I would like to invest in with hardworking people like yourself. One day god willing. It's a beautiful seaside town. Keep up the good work. When this covid 19 vaccine get the place back normal I will be traveling home and hopefully I meet the 🔥 general. I am from St Ann, now in florida . I never hang out in St Elizabeth but I will definitely visit next time.
This is the most uninteresting commentary of the town of Black River I have ever seen and heard.
