thank you so much for this tutorial! (I even impressed my 16yo with my creation---thanks to you!) I can't wait to use this in my classroom with my preschoolers!
Uhhh, this is kinda insane for just a class worksheet. I don't remember my primary school teachers putting this much effort into my class. Props to you and keep up the good work; will definitely be sharing this with my friends who teach at primary schools! If you put this much effort into engaging the class, you definitely a lot more pay and a lot less criticism from Alan Tudge! P.S. Where/why did you learn coding? I'd bet very few teachers would know even the basic functions in Excel/Sheets that you're using
I agree it takes time! I think the more you learn, the faster you get. I found it enjoyable to create these custom little projects for class and the students loved it. I try to learn new things to be better prepared for the future of work that students will find themselves in. I've done a Java subject at university, CS50 - free online course from Harvard, W3 schools for HTML/CSS - free online website, codecademy for Python. I have a general understanding of basics but honestly wouldn't be able to develop anything from scratch. Something you're interested in?
Hi John, I'm glad you enjoyed it!! For word answers check out my next video ua-cam.com/video/U3RYaJX5_AM/v-deo.html - essentially you'll need to add quotation marks as well.
Hi Miss Nicole! This is awesome! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise with all of us! How do I get access to the freebies? I'd love to try them out. Thanks so much!
What if we use a drop-down box that is created from a range of cells. How do we create conditional formating for a range of cells rather than just one cell?
This was really easy and a great tutorial! Is there a way to make a printable version? I'm guessing I would put numbers in the cells and give them a legend? Is there an easier way?
I am following the video. I have the art drawn. When I put in the =$B$2 it is fine but when I add the 2 it changes the color to the default light blue. I have rewatched the tutorial, tried over and over, and it still won't work.
Let's see if this works: 1. Click on cell B2 2. Go to the toolbar: Format > Number > Select "Automatic Text". 3. Try redoing the formula again You can download the template to play around with it yourself as well nicolesnotes.com.au/free/
Thank you so much for the tutorial! I think I followed all of the steps. I made a pixelated image and did the conditional formatting. Turned it white. When I type the correct answer, it doesn't change back to its original color. Any ideas? I did the =$B$1212 for each correct answer.
Hi Danielle, it sounds like you are following the right steps. Click on Cell B12 > Format (In the menu bar) > Number > Automatic. This is to make sure the Google Sheets is reading your input "12" as a number. You can also download the freebies to take a look at the conditional formatting. nicolesnotes.com/free/ Good luck!
it doesnt work when i write "=$B$2-3/4" when the answer is -3/4. all it does it make it white and doesnt change when i put in the right or wrong answer.
Thank you very much for this great tutorial, it was really fun to create a first game! Is it possible to require the case of the text while respecting the upper and lower case letters (in chemistry this is important, for exemple i want Ag and not "AG" or "ag"). I share your site and your YT channel, it's fantastic!
Hi Astrid! Thank you! That's a use case I hadn't thought about yet! A little tricky, but here we go! Let's say your answer cell is E9 where you want the answer to be "Ag". 1. Select the cells in the picture that you want to appear. 2. Go to Conditional Formating > Custom Formula and type the formula =NOT(EXACT(E9, "Ag")) 3. Change the Fill Cell colour to White. I hope this helps. The function EXACT(String 1, String 2) checks that the two pieces of text are exactly the same (case sensitive).
Thank you so much! Question: Do you know how to make the formula work for fractions? For example, when I put in =$B$6=3/4, the pixels don't appear. It's only working for whole numbers. Thanks!
THIS IS SO AWESOME!! Thank you! I am currently trying to adapt this to slope. Would you happen to know how to put more than one correct answer choice in for the conditional formatting? For example, I need 4/-5 and -4/5 as possible answer choices. This is the formula I am using, I just don't know how to get that second choice in there. =$B$2"4/-5". Thank you so much!
Hey there you're welcome!! 😁 For two answers, you need to use the AND operator. =AND($B$2"4/5",$B$2"-4/5") So we're saying here, if students don't type 4/5 or -4/5 then colour the cell white. If students type the correct answer, the pixels will be revealed. I hope this helps!
Help! I have used your tutorial successfully before. Unfortunately when I try to have a fraction in the answer cell, =$B$9"1/2" does not work. Any ideas?
Try this: If you merged A1:A4, you can refer to the cell as A1 superuser.com/questions/928655/i-am-trying-to-reference-a-merged-cell-on-one-worksheet-and-have-it-copy-over-in
HI! Thank you so much for this tutorial! I am busy making some for my third graders! What if the answer is 0? The formula doesn´t seem to work with that. I typed =$B$60 Thank you for your time!
add another rule but only select the one that you want red if its wrong then select if not then put the answer in the little bubble thing then change it red and press done!

A question: do I need to use another formula when the answers are words?
When the formula includes words, try putting quotation marks around them. 😊😊😊

This was really easy and a great tutorial! Is there a way to make a printable version? I'm guessing I would put numbers in the cells and give them a legend? Is there an easier way?
Yes I also think you would have a legend because the students would need to know which colours to use for the picture to come out right :)

Isn't it possible for to click on the image location and click 'conditional formatting' to REVEAL THE CORRECT ANSWERS? Help, how do I hide this?

Is there a way to include text or special characters in the answers?
Yes, of course! It works in the same way as the numbers - just need to add some quotations. I'm working on that video 😁
Thank you!
thank you im subing and likeing
Pretty original idea! Is it possible to protect the paintint cells in order to not see the conditional formatting and avoid cheating?

Does this work with a Mac? When I select the pixel and hold down control it isn't collecting multiple pixels
Hi Amanda, try holding down the Command key on Mac
it doesnt work when i write "=$B$2-3/4" when the answer is -3/4. all it does it make it white and doesnt change when i put in the right or wrong answer.
I tested it out myself. For me, you have to put =$B$2"-3/4" instead of just -3/4.
is this still available? I tried clicking on the link and nothing

Hi Ms. Cueva, try =$B$6"3/4". You want to say if 3/4 is not typed in then the cell should be white.
Make sure the cell field is "Plain Text".
@@classnotes Thank you so much for responding! : ) It's working now! Yay!

Kara's solved her own problem. Check the cell's "Number format" to make sure that "plain text" is selected. 💡
What kind of code would I use if I merged cells together and it wasn't considered ONE location? I am having a bit of trouble with this.

I also was wondering this. When I do one with 0 they don't seem to disappear?
