  • In this tutorial we'll be going over how you can trace pixel art from images using Inkscape. Now there is a built-in feature for auto-tracing your pixel art, but it doesn't always produce the desired results. In these instances it would be good to know how to trace pixel art manually, which we'll be going over in today's tutorial.
    The example design used in this demonstration is a stock image that I purchased from 123rf. You can purchase it here if interested: www.123rf.com/photo_149633607...

    I see comments saying that Inkscape isn't the ideal program to do this, which is fair, but I don't think that's the purpose of this vid. If someone doesn't have access to another program, or doesn't want to download it/ Learn it, or is just more familiar with Inkscape in their workflow, this is an alternative to create pixel art for their use-case.
    Much like maybe JavaScript would be ideal for building an app, but if Python is sufficient for my use case and I'm more familiar with it, I'll use it over JS.

    Altough it's interesting to see this done in inkscape, there are definitely other tools out there that make this a lot easier than this.

      There are other ways to do this in Inkscape. IronEcho Design had a video on pixelating images. It shows how you could setup Inkscape so it pixelates in one click, a bit advanced for some maybe? There are many different ways to use Inkscape, depends what your looking for?

      I'm sure this is true, but sometimes you just want to see if you can't find a way to do things with the software you already have and know. Helps train your creative and out-of-the-box thinking. For example, I once made an app specifically for this purpose in MATLAB. Well, not quite *this* purpose: I wanted to create a custom mouse pointer icon for another app I was developing and I assumed I'd need to do something like that a few more times in the future so I might as well save future me some time. The app was simple: the image size was a standard icon size and you could click the squares representing pixels to cycle through three colour options (black, white or transparent). So, to use it for *this* purpose, I'd need to simply add a colour picker and a background image loader, which is easy enough to do.

    Thanks Nick, for showing Inkscape's many tools and possibilities!
    Sure there are apps that can do this type of art, but for me, I feel more comfortable creating as much of my art
    with the same program. It's tools suit me the best and allow me to be the most creative!
    So, big thanks Nick!

    11:30 - The lines between the squares are just an artifact of anti-aliasing. Duplicating the squares makes the lines less apparent but doesn't quite fix them. You may want to give your squares a thin outline in their respective fill colors instead.

      I've learned to just combine them and delete the extra nodes. The stroke leaves strange artifacts, or sometimes just don't show, when you use your svg in other apps.

    This is awesome! Could you also do a pixel art tutorial from scratch using no image or maybe a reference image off the side on google as a pose to tracing over one? I know it’s similar principles but it would be cool to see some kind of pixel platformer game style artwork tutorial from you.

    To get rid of those line between the pixels I usually Ctrl++ (Path > Union) them by selecting all by fill color and deselecting the ones until I get one single area and go around them all the same way..

    Wouldn' it be easier/faster to use the bezier tool and draw along the grid?
    Also, you can get rid of the lines between objects of the same color by converting the objects to paths and then merging them.

    Hi Nick, thank you very much for your tutorial, all of them are very well explained and it really so the job easier. Have a question, would it be a software or web application out there that helps to convert a whole image, photo or picture to a Pixel Art? Thanks in advance.

    Is there a way to make a low resolution SVG? I do the bitmap copy after shrinking down a SVG and scale the bitmap copy back up. I then go to object properties for the bitmap copy and change it from "auto" to "pixelate". Then save as optimized SVG because I need the size 15kb or smaller. But here is my problem, I make decals for Gran Turismo 7 and the game requires them to be no larger than 15kb. I go to upload the pixelated SVG but the Gran Turismo website says this SVG format is not supported. I know it had something to do with the bitmap data in it even though it is an SVG.
    Is there another way to make a "low resolution pixelated" SVG in Inkscape? Reason why I want SVGs that have that low resolution quality is because I'm trying to make early arcade game racers liveries for Gran Turismo.

    Wouldn't this be gravely inefficient? You are creating hundreds of square objects with unnecessary data and I think that takes a lot of space and impacts performance. I think it would be better to do it in Aseprite or Photoshop for example by just having it as a reference background. Good video regardless!

    WHY DOES YOUR INKSCAPE LOOK SO DIFFERENT!?

  • @Inkysoup
    @Inkysoup Рік тому +6

    What's the point? You might as well make pixel art in any raster program and it would be easier - pixel art doesn't benefit from being a vector since you want to see the pixels in the first place. Before anyone says it means it wont be blurry, just export at a larger size.

    • @gene_Code
      @gene_Code Рік тому

      someone else might find this useful.

    • @Inkysoup
      @Inkysoup Рік тому

      @@gene_Code No, the point is that there is literally no use for this - it is slower and provides no benefit.

    • @shirluban
      @shirluban Рік тому +2

      Vector pixel art might be easier to include into another vector artwork. You can resize / rotate / transform it anytime without worrying about export size at all, since there's no export to begin with. You can also change colors on the fly, instead of switching to another program and export + re-import every time.

      I’m 1 year later for this but here: I can’t draw with a mf pencil. I have made designs with vectors since I was 15 using a mouse. This is a very good way for me to try and make pixel art vs using things like gimp and a tablet. The point is to be able to do it differently from those who have different skills, not everyone has your needs or wants. Don’t just come to criticize something that isn’t useful to you when you’re ignorant enough to not know that almost everyone else in this forsaken planet isn’t you.
