Suggestion: Come back in December to review your predictions and discuss them alongside whatever actually happened during the year! I think that would be pretty interesting.
A trend I've noticed is pirate books seem to be on the rise. I was reading the synopses of various 2023 releases, and I found loads about pirates for some reason.
I noticed this as well! I’m a writer and I’ve been working on a YA pirate book since 2020 thinking it was such a unique idea but apparently I was not the only one haha
I think the Our Flag Means Death craze influenced this! Film and television trends and book trends influence each other, which is why I think dark academia isn’t going away soon because of the Wednesday craze (slightly off topic I know, but it *is* a television influence on books so 🤷🏻♀️😂)
In terms of special editions, i think the way authors will be forced to go is by adding "new chapters" or "unseen content" into special editions in order to make them special again and therefore worth buying. also loving all this content jesse has been blessing us with recently!
I wasn't a big fan of audiobooks and used to feel that it is cheating, then I listened to Interview with a robot by Lee Bacon and I was hooked, I currently have 305 titles in my audible library and I love it. Just like the average person I have an eight to 10 hour job, family to take care of and so I don't get to read as many physical books as I'd like to. Audibles also help when I get in reading slump and I can't decide on what to read. I'm also big on young adult books and always get from people "but your in your 40's" my response is typically "what are you reading?" and 50% of the time I hear crickets lol. I even had a person trying to make fun of me because I read too much, which to me is if that is the worst I can do I will take it. :) Anywho love the content and videos you put out.
Totally on board with cozy fantasy! Some of my favorite books are cozy fantasy, and my favorite trope, found family, pairs well with it. While I love fantasy, I’m a squeamish reader, so the era of really dark, gritty fantasy wasn’t for me.
Not exactly a reboot, but I know that Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie is coming out later this year! I am simultaneously excited and terrified because this movie will either rock or it will be so terrible. Anybody else? Thanks, Jesse! I'm so happy to watch your videos whenever I see them!
Dystopian fiction is having a really big moment rn in adult fiction which is really cool to see. I think the trapping w a lot of YA dystopians was that the ideas were great but the age range restriction really didn’t let them see their full potential, so now we have Poster Girl by Veronica Roth, To Paradise by Hanya Yanagihara, Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng, to name a few really being able to go so deep into dystopia! I hope the trend continues!
at this point, I can’t even watch the discourse happen in silence anymore, I just exit immediately and do something calming because it stresses me out to even see people interacting in the most unhinged ways, like it makes me isolate myself 😭 dark academia, imo, had a boom in such a strange way, where it felt like if anything remotely bad happened in a school setting it was given that label. so I’d get recommended things that I would classify more as a thriller instead. I hope the trend of labeling books as DA fizzles out and more books come out that play with the genre instead 🙏🏼 love the lighting of this video, very much pov: sitting in Literature Professor Jesse’s office hours to chat about the new year! and you did great talking about the special editions 😁🌟
I am not personally looking forward to the cozy surge we have been seeing of late. It is just not the type of book I enjoy. On one hand, I like seeing people's tastes change and find new things that they love, and having more slice of life fantasy out and being distributed would be a good thing. But the way other people's reading tastes are changing is different to mine and a lot of books being hyped up doesn't sound interesting to me. I don't have an issue with having a different reading taste (which honestly isn't a new thing with me), but finding recommendations have become more difficult, and there are so many I am loving that I am seeing as underhyped and underrated and...I don't know how to finish this sentence but it is kind of sad in a sense.
when you mentioned a popular author people are going to turn on, I thought colleen hoover. I don't think it will happen based on all the popularity she's got at the moment, I just find it interesting that she was the first name that came to my mind
The first thing I think about when people say "audiobooks aren't reading" is visually impaired/blind people who may not be able to comfortably reading words on the page and so resort to audiobooks to still get their book fix. This rhetoric can be quite ignorant and potentially ableist of people.
Thank you so much for saying that. I posted a comment earlier and deleted it because people might take it is confrontational. I lost enough of my vision in 2021 that I can no longer read printed books. On occasion Kindle in large font and audio books are what I am left with. I’m still a reader. I feel diminished when people are insistent that I shouldn’t say I read a great book when it was an audiobook. Just how you wouldn’t expect a blind person to say they felt a great book. No. They read it. Reading needs a broader definition. I want you to know I really appreciate your comment. I feel validated. 🙂
Why is listening suddenly a curse word? Blind people are listening to the audiobook (or reading a book in braille if one is available). I don't understand how using words that describe the action is ableist. Thinking audiobooks or people who listen to them are inferior is obviously dumb and ableist, but we still have a different word to describe the action so why not use it? I don't say I drove to work if I had walked that day. When writing wasn't invented people listened to stories. It's only when writing was invented that people could read to them (after they'd learned to read of course). Reading is a newer way to experience stories, I don't see why we suddenly need to obscure the more traditional way by calling it something else. I know the difference might be just semantical, since the same story is going to your brain anyway, but reducing the amount of words people can use seems to me like taking a step back.
Hard agree on special editions - the market is so over saturated that I’m immune to them now. They’ve lost their luster to me because it seems like every book is getting one or two
Purple is my favourite colour. I once saw a book with purple sprayed edges and a golden Circe kinda cover. I instantly bought it. Hate to say it but I don't remember the name of the book and it's proudly being displayed on my bookshelf. Haven't even read it yet and I purchased it like 4 months ago. But now I'm no longer as fascinated with sprayed edges. So you're right. I'm not gonna purchase more books based on sprayed edges. Only beautiful cover ones now😅😂
Another genre that feels pretty popular are gothic horror novels. I felt like there were a decent amount published in 2022 and I been seeing more for 2023 New releases.
Currently reading The House in the Cerulean Sea which I am enjoying right now. Definitely read Legends and Lattes. It’s such a great comforting book to relax with on a lazy cozy day.
I think we're being lead out of the dark academia trend just a little, but I think there will still be some popular books releasing here and there, probably due to the recent success of Babel. If dark academia was dying a little before Babel's release, I think that title will bring it back to the forefront. I'm saying this all as a dark academia lover -- I really don't want it to go out of trend.
I agree with you about special editions. And I think it has already started. Special editions don't feel special anymore. Now they just feel like another edition. And the special edition isn't always an improvement.
I read not only young adult but even middle grade level books sometimes. I noticed a lot of popular books are in a hard to define grey area and many Goodread users will add them to both young adult and middle grade shelves, or both young adult and adult shelves because they're so readable for more than one age group.
Yep. Plus sometimes some series start middle grade and mature with the series. Take Harry Potter for example. The first handful of books are pretty kid friendly, but around books 4 or 5 when Harry is like 15, the books get much darker and more mature. Other series stay kid friendly like Keeper of the Lost Cities. Now in book 9, Sophie is about 16 and it's still pretty much just as kid friendly as book one with innocent middle school crushes actually becoming true, albeit innocent, relationships but that's about it
these predictions sound so on point! also in terms of the drama, i agree that people's bad takes should not be indulged and we should all strive to use our energy in a more positive way rather than engaging trolls and pot stirrers
Agree with all you’re thoughts and totally see where your coming from for all of them! For the romance aspect specifically, I think booktok has made dark romances, sports romances, small town romances and anything spicy’ really popular… and I have a feeling that this year people will start to venture out more from those niches and we’re going to see some new niches pop up… maybe more suspense or even go back to fantasy romance… idk… but i see something happening
Almost done with House in the Cerulean Sea, which I would say is cozy fantasy so I'm totally on board with more. Plus I'm currently listening to the Merry Ghost Inn series on audiobook which is a cozy mystery with mild paranormal elements so I'm in the mood! Might need to read Legends and Lattes soon too!
I am so excited about cozy in 2023! I started rereading the Hannah Swensen cozy mystery series recently and this time, I am going to finish it! I am also psyched about cozy fantasy. I paused this video to buy "Legends and Lattes" on Kindle.
Just ONE of the topics? I'll see that prediction and raise you: we'll see all four of those this year and we'll see at least one of them more than once.
I'm constantly on the search for more cozy fantasy but I think it can be a very broad term. I have often heard 'A House on the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune' being described as cozy fantasy so maybe there will be more books like it but what I truly wish for is more books like Legend and Lattes. L&L is a book that is like a warm hug and without there being angst or drama in character relationships. No one is emotionally hurtful or tramples on someone's self esteem in it. I would love to see more stories like this.
The special edition thoughts made so much sense don't you worry Jesse and yes, I also feel like what you're saying is unfortunately happening/going to happen.
You should read Long Live the Pumpkin Queen, it is such an incredible read and I normally don’t use this word for books, but it is such a cute story. I have never read such an adorable book like this before. So please support this book, so that we may get a movie for it. That would just be amazing if we get a sequel to the nightmare before Christmas.
the exact same and i mean the EXACT same rise and fall of colleen hoover that booktube saw like 5/6 years ago is happening again because of her resurgence in popularity on booktok and everyday i log onto the internet and feel like i'm having an aneurysm
You had some really interesting points and I agree with all of them. Some might happen, some will happen, some are already happening, very cool! Loved the video!
on the dark academia subject I’m hoping a broader range of ‘academia’ books - like light or romantic academia! Those are much more my academia preference so I hope that genre picks up!
Really enjoyed this video. Thank you for putting together a thoughtful, well rounded summation of the book trends and your predictions. I appreciate your work.
I am clearly out of the loop. This was really interesting to watch. What kinds of things did you learn about the publishing industry last year that makes you think self-published will become more popular? I have my own criticisms, but I'm not as tuned in.
Wow Jess! You are really pumping out these videos for us!! I’m so glad to see you uploading you again 😊 Love all your videos ❤ Hope your day is fantastic✨
I listened this in the car like a podcast and I've decided that you should start a podcast in 2023. If u already have a podcast and I'm late to the party I'm gonna need those deets. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
I predict that 2023 will be another year of many mystery novels that reflect the distrust of something huge and unfamiliar and the social anxieties that have been building up over the past few years. I also predict we'll see a lot of novels starring "great detectives" who can give us the answer to any mystery! My personal prediction is that I will be back to and be more committed to the world of Cozy Mystery this year! (≧▽≦)🔎✨
If you’re wanting to read more indie books then you should definitely check out Storybound fest in July. It’s in Missouri July 21-22nd. It’s a convention purely for indie authors
Great discussion. I especially agree with your thoughts on adaptations and special editions. The studios want to make money off these books, but changing the content loses them the viewership they crave. I don't understand why they don't see that. As a collector, I used to buy special editions because of decorative covers too. Though, I now prefer when the author gives us more like extra content or outtakes.
Funnily enough, after the last Divergent series movie (the one that never got its Part 2 or whatever) ... they actually _wanted_ to do a tv series, but Tris's actress turned it down because she didn't want to do a whole tv series..and that's why a tv series adaptation never happened, so far.
Really? I must have my facts wrong then. Because I heard she turned down the movie roll because her character doesn't have the spotlight for long (if you know what I mean. Not wanting to spoil it for people who haven't read it yet) and that they intended to do a mini series to make it up to the fans. I don't know where I heard this, but that's what I've been going on since it all got cancelled.
@@kanashiiookami6537 🤷♀️🤷♀️ I think that's what the official report was, anyhow. That the final movie was canceled due to decreasing returns in box-office sales, and that they didn't end up moving forward with the tv series like they had been considering doing either because Tris's actress didn't want to do a tv series. It was a long time ago though, so maybe I'm misremembering something. And who knows for sure if the official statement was the whole truth and nothing but the truth, either. Lol
I have no problem with people readin YA, but at the same time a lot of it is hard for me to read and enjoy anymore. I won't give up on it as a genre but I don't seek it anymore either and it's rarely on my reading lists. I am not sure why I don't like it as I don't think it's an age issue - I really enjoy rereading much of my middle reader fiction and new books there as well.
I argue that dark academia will actually have a Great Milking in 2023, and we will get a slight oversaturation of it. By 2024 I think it will make its way out.
If I could vouch for the trend of exclusive editions having different bonus content dying out that would be great. I hate when a new anticipated book drops and in order to get all the extra chapters you have to buy 3 editions.
I feel that I am one of the odd readers that isn't really into Dark Academia. But because I still haven't read very much in it including Babel. I haven't found any favorite books in the Dark Academia area yet. I do still want to read Babel. Anyways I am currently reading House Of Earth And Blood because I didn't really care to read it in 2020. I'm late to most hyped new releases!😅
THANK YOU SO MUCH, for this video! I needed to hear some of that. I always feel guilty when I rate comics or mange on Goodreads, because people will say "This is not a real book!". Sometimes I even don't put a date, so my comic wouldn't count on my reading challenge... Now I think I won't do that this year. :D And YES, vampires are coming back! And part of it is the best tv reboot of 2022 - Interview with the Vampire! Give it a chance! :D
with the popularity of heartstopper, i'm predicting that more of alice oseman's work is going to be adapted, personally i'd like to see loveless as that is my favourite but it will probably either be i was born for this or radio silence
agree on the special editions ugh i dont really collect special editions much but damm if i didnt start doin it with the chain of thorns special edition from illumicrate, fairyloot, waterstones, litjoy and or faecrate cant even remmeber which one and they expensive too.. and dust jackets for the same series (like tog and acotar series has sooooooo many dust jackets from different bookish stores on insta, sometimes 1 stores and 2 different dust jacket sets for same series..and they usually like 100cad or more for me) 5th wave and divergent would be cool yeh doubt they would do well true
it's January 13th and i can already vouch that we had the discourse about "reading 200 books" in the Spanish speaking community... gods, we are so freaking obvious sometimes 😂😂😂😂
Not exactly a prediction and maybe it's because my last book of 2022 (audiobook no less) was 'Legend' by Marie Lu, but I would really like a resurgence of Dystopian lit. But with more nuance/less focus on romantic relationships I just think it would be interesting to re-examine the genre and that the genre itself is even more than it was in 2010 when 'The Hunger Games' was first published, since we are now on this side of a plague with more people aware of the negatives of the kind of society we live in. Maybe we could have that at the same time as Cosy Fantasy, as a cover for each other or something. Since fantasy and science fiction are often placed together I think it could be fun.
I don't own a single book with sprayed edges because I feel they're all way too expensive. I would have loved some of the Illumnicrate editions and ones from other book companies but every time I try to buy it, I just can't afford it because other stuff takes priority. I still think sprayed edges are pretty special!
the tea on being part of booktube/book community for a decade is great 😂 I am definitely part of the sidelines and tiptoeing around discourse lol I support the Brandon Sanderson time stop tool conspiracy, how does he do it 😅😅😅😅
i'm so convinced the reboot/spin off is gonna be hunger games based. the movies were of course SO popular but i can easily see them make a spin off show in some way
i could see that! we're also getting the ballad of songbirds and snakes adaptation this year so maybe if it's successful we'll get some kind of hunger games spin off.
What I hope gets rebooted as a series is Chaos Walking. They did it dirty with one movie that focused more on star power than plot or anything like in the book! (No hate to Tom Holland or Mads Mikkelsen, I love those actors, though I think Mads would've been better in the role of the dad/uncle/whoever that character was to the MC) I was so disappointed in the movie especially considering I had raced to read, and enjoy, all the books before it came out.
I'm one of those people who reads a lot and i stopped telling people how many, it just ends up making me sad. It's disheartening that there's always hate and that i feel like i have to justify how i spend my time
i'd love to see a long running series in the ya romance genre, i feel like series (or even just companion novels in the same universe) don't exist often in ya unless its fantasy. i am such a series girlie i don't want to the characters to just: end, at the end of a single book i want to read 10 books of the same characters! but i'm not a fan of fantasy or adult romance, so i feel like its hard for me to find 🙁🙁
Im predicting more horror. Adam Cesare and Grady hendrix have been bringing it back and with a new Hendrix release. Maybe that’s just my hope though since I love horror.
Suggestion: Come back in December to review your predictions and discuss them alongside whatever actually happened during the year! I think that would be pretty interesting.
good idea ☺️
I'm so onboard with cozy fantasy being the next big thing!
me too!
SO HAPPY we're getting all this content
🖤

about sanderson, hes also a professor at my school, so I really don't know how he wrote all those books
I feel like I’m finally entering my era with all these cozy books coming out! 😍

I really wish there were more standalone fantasy/sci-fi. Every damn time I find something interesting it's a series with bazillion books.
Currently reading The House in the Cerulean Sea which I am enjoying right now. Definitely read Legends and Lattes. It’s such a great comforting book to relax with on a lazy cozy day.
I'm reading The House in the Cerulean Sea too! Every description I've heard was kinda vague so it's pleasantly surprising me!

None of us had "author fakes her own death and attempts come back 2 years late" on our 2023 predictions
I'm up for cozy fantasy! and I will be reading a lot more series in 2023. also, I'm seriously in love with your new background 😀
Agree with all you’re thoughts and totally see where your coming from for all of them! Please do not speak a Divergent reboot into existence 😅 I would like to leave that dumpster fire in 2014 where it belongs...
I mean they are filming a goosebumps tv show outside my house right now so… yes reboots are on the rise!
Disney+ is supposed to do a Goosebumps rebot. Like your video. And your editing is always on point. 💚👽🖤
Tbh I'm here for the cozy fantasy era
Love all the predictions and also the lighting in this video. It’s moody

I love your videos. It feels like I’m in the library with a friend ❤
🖤
THis was so much fun and fascinating to watch. Can't wait for the Dark Academia vid!
Thank you!
7:01 i dont know why i thought it was funny but the special editions of the locked tomb i got has all 3 of these qualities!! you're so right
I felt so called out when you said VE Schwab. Literally just bought more editions of her books this week.
so so so on board with cozy fantasy being the thing this year

lmaoo not me writing a dark academia book rn 💀
Coming back into my booktube obsession
we love to see it!
Same here!
I love series!
For those who read over 200 books a year I always want to know do they have to worry about other things?
200 or more isnt actually that many. like think about it. thats not even 1 book a day. /nm
the exact same and i mean the EXACT same rise and fall of colleen hoover that booktube saw like 5/6 years ago is happening again because of her resurgence in popularity on booktok and everyday i log onto the internet and feel like i'm having an aneurysm
LOL pretty much!
You had some really interesting points and I agree with all of them. Some might happen, some will happen, some are already happening, very cool! Loved the video!
Lots of good points haha. Thank you for sharing! I really love watching your videos, they're one of my fave kind of breaks in between studying
🖤🖤🖤
on the dark academia subject I’m hoping a broader range of ‘academia’ books - like light or romantic academia! Those are much more my academia preference so I hope that genre picks up!
You posted this pre 4th wing and it shows.....I haven't read it but omg it popped off
Really enjoyed this video.
I’m so glad to see you uploading you again 😊
Love all your videos ❤
Hope your day is fantastic✨
🖤
Lol me in the middle of my dark academia book.... haha
I love cozy mysteries and love fantasy so I'm here for cozy fantasy genre!
I hate when a new anticipated book drops and in order to get all the extra chapters you have to buy 3 editions.
i'm so happy with these new Jesse content ✨🥺💖
I feel that I am one of the odd readers that isn't really into Dark Academia. But because I still haven't read very much in it including Babel. I haven't found any favorite books in the Dark Academia area yet. I do still want to read Babel. Anyways I am currently reading House Of Earth And Blood because I didn't really care to read it in 2020. I'm late to most hyped new releases!😅
Eragon is getting a reboot! I think sometime this year I'm not sure.
And YES, vampires are coming back! And part of it is the best tv reboot of 2022 - Interview with the Vampire! Give it a chance! :D
aaa your editing is SO slay
I love the lighting in this video!🖤
with the popularity of heartstopper, i'm predicting that more of alice oseman's work is going to be adapted, personally i'd like to see loveless as that is my favourite but it will probably either be i was born for this or radio silence
I could def see that!
I loved the chill lighting for this chat video!! ❤
Those predictions are honestly valid.
Loved the video :)
Thanks!
agree on the special editions ugh i dont really collect special editions much but damm if i didnt start doin it with the chain of thorns special edition from illumicrate, fairyloot, waterstones, litjoy and or faecrate cant even remmeber which one and they expensive too.. and dust jackets for the same series (like tog and acotar series has sooooooo many dust jackets from different bookish stores on insta, sometimes 1 stores and 2 different dust jacket sets for same series..and they usually like 100cad or more for me) 5th wave and divergent would be cool yeh doubt they would do well true
Thank u for all the videos so far this year!!! On HP and the half blood prince!!! Hope you’re doing well ❤️❤️❤️
The days you upload are my favourite days💜 Also I love the background and everything!
once you mentioned a series becoming popular i immediately went to the book im writing currently to becoming a popular series(duology)
No kidding i was just saying to myself "i need bable" the second jessie bought it up
Yeeeeeeeesssss to self published getting traditional treatment ❤️
it's January 13th and i can already vouch that we had the discourse about "reading 200 books" in the Spanish speaking community... gods, we are so freaking obvious sometimes 😂😂😂😂
I always love this video from you!💕
Not exactly a prediction and maybe it's because my last book of 2022 (audiobook no less) was 'Legend' by Marie Lu, but I would really like a resurgence of Dystopian lit.
Lolol and on 2, listen to an audiobook on that run 😅
I don't own a single book with sprayed edges because I feel they're all way too expensive. I would have loved some of the Illumnicrate editions and ones from other book companies but every time I try to buy it, I just can't afford it because other stuff takes priority. I still think sprayed edges are pretty special!
So ready for this!
the tea on being part of booktube/book community for a decade is great 😂 I am definitely part of the sidelines and tiptoeing around discourse lol
I support the Brandon Sanderson time stop tool conspiracy, how does he do it 😅😅😅😅
this was such a good video!!!
i'm so convinced the reboot/spin off is gonna be hunger games based. the movies were of course SO popular but i can easily see them make a spin off show in some way
i could see that! we're also getting the ballad of songbirds and snakes adaptation this year so maybe if it's successful we'll get some kind of hunger games spin off.
It's disheartening that there's always hate and that i feel like i have to justify how i spend my time
Series have always been popular in the mystery genre
i'd love to see a long running series in the ya romance genre, i feel like series (or even just companion novels in the same universe) don't exist often in ya unless its fantasy. i am such a series girlie i don't want to the characters to just: end, at the end of a single book i want to read 10 books of the same characters! but i'm not a fan of fantasy or adult romance, so i feel like its hard for me to find 🙁🙁
Im predicting more horror. Adam Cesare and Grady hendrix have been bringing it back and with a new Hendrix release. Maybe that’s just my hope though since I love horror.
I’m also predicting another ACOTAR book at least announced this year. It’s been awhile since the acosf freak out period.
The easiest prediction: another Stephen king book at least announced. Hopefully a true horror book because fairytale’s fantasy vibe wasn’t my thing.
