4 million subscribers!! I keep hitting numbers I never imagined I'd ever reach, so I'm going to keep recreating dishes I never imagined I'd ever recreate. This week it's the Death Sandwich from Regular Show, a pretty-plain-lookin' submarine that promises to kill you if you eat it without donning a mullet and jorts. In the Babishian spirit of approaching pop culture repast renditions as realistically as possible, I enlist the help of a tv-chef-superstar to build a sandwich worth...dying for? Probably not, no. But holy shit you guys, I got to hang out with Masaharu Morimoto!!

The puffer fish didn't actually evolve a poison, they just contain and concentrate it from the starfish that they eat which is, in fact, poisonous. They have a puffer fish farm in Japan and they actually contain no poison because they aren't fed starfish.

I love how chill Morimoto is. He's just living his best life, just vibing with Andrew and eating dangerous but sucky fish and having a good time doing so. Man is an icon.
Morimoto has literally nothing to prove at this point. He’s achieved pretty much everything there is so he’s earned the right to chill and do what he wants.

Fugu was fairly accessible in Japanese restaurants where I’m from (definitely not $300) and I was a real foodie as a kid.
Once my parents brought me out to eat and I demolished an entire platter of fugu sashimi on my own with my little 8 year old stomach. It really is worth the risk.
I relate to Babish's enthusiasm about finding that "perfect onion." I've found a few of those in my life and I always relish it for the amount of time that it isn't in my stomach.
Having Chef Morimoto serve you must've been an amazing honor.
Classy as hell not to mention him in the thumbnail or title.
He seems like a really laid back guy. He clearly takes food very seriously, but he also gets a lot of joy from eating and serving his food to people.

I've recently found myself binge watching binging with babish (try saying that three times fast) and I've gotta say, this episode has been one of my favourites, it was very hard not to smile the entire time he was with Morimoto.

The whole interaction between Andrew and Morimoto was wholesome af. You could see him being kind of nervous at the beginning but really loosening up as he realized Morimoto was actually a really fun laid back dude, and by the end they were just two chefs joking around with each other.

It's only deadly if prepared incorrectly. Japanese chefs train for years before preparing it. Also, it actually doesn't remove all the poison when prepared, so you get this great euphoric rush as you eat it.
Except if im not mistaken by now they remove all the poison and then sprinkle on a little bit of diluted poison on it since that way its easier to get the non lethal dose right

I remember watching Morimoto on Iron Chef when I was a kid. I just really liked the vibes he had while he was cooking. Seeing him now almost 2 decades later, and he still gives me the same vibes as before. I absolutely love it.

Honestly true though. It's almost a status symbol, and the ability to prepare it well was a kind of demonstration of skill if you were the person doing it. At the end of the day, it's still a fish.

I guess one of the perks of reaching god tier of a craft is the confidence of being above having to pretend.
Yeah. Japanese cuisine is like 80% hype and pretension above the base level of practical cookery.
Not that other people don't overhype, but few are as bad with it as the Japanese. If you manage to be an elitist snob about almost every little thing, every simple little dish, that's where you have people spend a fortune for a poisonous fish when they could have so much better for less.
Not sure what Japanese cuisine you've been studying. They are a people that strives for perfection; fugu may be a gimmick, but don't lambaste their entire cuisine over one fish, I know what you're trying to say, but it's their style- I don't claim to understand it, but I don't deign to knock it.
