"This tea is nothing more than hot leaf juice!"
"Uncle, that's what all tea is."
"How could a member of my own family say something so horrible?"
When So-Han was talking about bad tea, this was all I could think about XD
Me too. Like I began to know how Iroh felt when I drink crappy tea. High quality tea has really powerful chi(气、 _qì_ ), and can even alter your mood.
I really appreciate that the whiskey tribe channel isn't afraid to go off track into other interesting areas, it really brings out the element of exploration and appreciation that brings the tribe together.
It also helps that it's Dry Week and they couldn't do an alcohol episode to begin with.
@@wasabista1613 *tisane, for future reference. You can still just say "herbal tea" if you want to.
@@wasabista1613 Bit weird, isn't it? Always thought there was a weird texture difference between that and grass bits.
Considering that a lot of people mix whiskey and tea, it's not a huge stretch to talk about tea.
to really appreciate whisky, in my view, the more reference points you have of smell and taste, the better
15:47 “i didn’t wanna say anything but-“
amazing lmfaooo
Seriously, every episode with So-Han is a joy to watch. This again was incredibly interesting.
Thank you! They’re a joy to film!
@@westchinatea Bro come to my country haha
The best tea is the tea you like to drink the way you like to drink it
I'm Asian American so I say I best tea is the tea that makes you money 😂
Nah man. If you only drink tea bags you never had good tea.
As someone who is Chinese, it’s really cool to see how the culture has spread to the US and how it’s fused with western ideas to bring such a unique experience. Really cool episode during a dry week!
It hasn't fused with the culture, insomuch that it is more like visiting an exhibit at a museum. It is cool to be able to experience it though.
My wife and I have now gone down the tea rabbit hole. We've been watching Tea House Ghost all afternoon.
This dude, who I always enjoy seeing on the channel, is way beyond a tea nerd (a compliment, not an insult). But listening to him share knowledge while seeing Dan in a Motorhead (RIP Lemmy) t-shirt was a jarring juxtaposition! And seeing Bri all dressed up and looking fancy, unlike Dan, was a refreshing change. Loved it, love the channel, and love never knowing what to expect when the Saturday videos come out!
4:10~ Taiping Houkui (太平猴魁, _Tài Píng Hóu Kuí_ , "Great Peace Monkey Chief")
8:28~ 2013 Attention Sheng Pu'er (心神古樹生茶, _Xīn Shén Gǔ Shù Shēng Chá_ , "State of Mind Ancient Tree Sheng Tea")
11:57~ Amanita (紅因, _Hóng Yīn_ , "Red Cause")
12:21~ Gamma Ray (丙種射線紅茶, _Bǐng Zhǒng Shè Xiàn Hóng Chá_ , "Gamma Ray Red Tea")
14:32~ Stone Axe Ancient Tree Yuan Sheng Tuo (石斧古樹原生沱熟茶, _Shí Fǔ Gǔ Shù Yuán Shēng Tuó Shú Chá_ , "Stone Axe Ancient Tree Original Life Tuo Ripe Tea")
I love how he speaks very knowledgeable about the culture, history, and science behind tea. Then proceeds to say "y'all"... Lol love it.
Also, love the whole concept of expanding out a bit for the channel.
Stay magnificent you bastards!
I never believed in "tea drunk" but I had a day off at home with a shipment of several nice teas. I wanted to try it all and drank a *lot* of tea. Tea drunk isn't the same as alcohol drunk but it is disorienting.
This is great! Because the tribe has gotten me into a search for the subtleties of whiskey, I stared drinking green tea at work and have also become interested in those subtleties and flavors.
HELL YEAH! I love green tea, and I’m glad you’ve discovered a new thing you like!
Props on the double tap on the table.
Side question, Have they ever talked about adding tea leaves into the barrels? Just a random idea for the "will it distill?" series
Would be really cool to see what tea does to the whiskey process!
Mackmyra did a whisky where they seasoned the barrels with green tea. I feel it worked well
Green tea and Johnny Walker is a pretty popular combo in karaoke bars
FEW has a tea and rye blend that is incredible.
We’ve been discussing it - gonna try it with pu’er
I myself drink a lot of herbal and rooibos teas at home when I need to unwind. I often, by the end of my cup, do feel a sort of disoriented relaxation in and around my temples. It was nice to know I'm not crazy and may actually be experiencing a fun phenomenon haha
So weird randomly seeing a video made about West China Teahouse lmao. My family and I have visited this place a few times in Austin.
I just love it when my tea and whiskey worlds collide 😊
Sup sis!
This is probably the most relaxed and chilled I have EVER seen Rex xD
Usually I have a nice pour of whiskey when watching this on Saturdays. Wasn't sure what I wanted until I saw where you went. But, as I am out of actual tea, I sipped on a juniper, mint, honey tisane from Tazo instead. Good call on some tea indeed! I love all the crossovers that happen. With Modern Rogue, West China Tea House, etc. It's just a great way to build communities together and expand one's own interests. I love it.
Been a long time whikey tribe and vault watcher, I just found teahouseghost randomly when trying to get into tea. I saw the thumb nail and realized that shop is in Austin TX I was way to excited to watch this video! Great collab!
Really nice episode. As a total tea noob, this was so interesting to watch. So-Han is so informative and fun to listen to.
Always enjoy a So-Han episode, and a new Tribe video is always a nice thing to wake up to.
lol dan looked like he wanted to roll up that tea n smoke it lol 🤣
Great episode. My youngest and I go to a tea house in Asheville NC often!
He loves to learn and teach others about the tea!
This is awesome! I went to check out the Teahouse Ghost channel and just finished binge watching all of their content. Love the channel!
I love tea at least as much as I love whiskey. Very different loves, but things that I'm deeply interested in and what to really know about and understand. So it's super cool that one of my favorite whiskey channels is exploring tea. This is so cool.
This is great. I actually got really into tea after visiting china and going to a tea shop where the person there very graciously shared in a tea ceremony. I even bought part of a kung fu tea set. I love the approach to tea as not just a flavor but a call to mindful presence the tea being just a vehicle really. That said the tea in that shop remains head and shoulders above anything I’ve had since. But I suppose now I know where I need to visit.
I used to work at a large Colorado hospital, non medical side. Food and nutrition department.
I had the privilege of serving weekly tea, a portable high tea, to the NICU, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Generally premises and their parents.
Big Feels happen in a NICU...
I had a profund conversation with a dad in a NICU pod with his baby.
Short version is, we discovered one of the important privileges of tea is resources, time being the big one. Time, access to fire, access to water, access to heating vessels and the star of the show, tea itself. ❤️❤️❤️
Such a convergence of blessings and resources.
Whiskey tribe teaching culture again. Absolutely great episode. 👍
I wish we had something like this in Europe.
This was absolutely fascinating! Thank you So-Han!
First the Modern Rogue, now the Whiskey Tribe collaborated with So-Han at West China Tea!!
Edit: I actually had a conversation with So-Han and Erik(a staff member at West China Tea House) today(10/18/2022), and it was a real blast talking with them.
12:11~I've actually felt like that after drinking some Iron Arhat (鉄羅漢, _Tǐe Luó Hàn_ , a cultivar of Wuyi Oolong).
Be focused on your body while drinking sounds like meditation. Will definitely calm you down make you more alert.
Can definetly relate to tea being more of a feeling than a taste. I drink tea daily(not the fancy stuff here). I started drinking tea as a coffee alternative, but have stuck with it because it works wonders for anxiety and just makes me a happier person in general.
OH THE DOUBLE FINGER TAP!
I grew up drinking pu'erh/bo lei - and though there's a little bit of the mysticism of Chinese culture here with the large emphasis on qi and the holistic "feel" of tea, this is a pretty good intro to Chinese tea culture. The "mysticism" is definitely a part of the tea appreciation, but it's definitely not as large a focus as it may come across here. But I guess it is helpful to bring out those aspects to help newcomers to both tea and Chinese culture appreciate good tea (try explaining what yeet hei / hon leung is to someone without sounding like some mystical new-age quack). Oh, and tea drunk is really a thing (green-er teas can get overly leung [cooling] if drunk to excess) - which is why it's usually a good idea to not drink too much on an empty stomach - trust me from experience.
Oh, and the tasting notes of pu'erh changes over the years and over different producers or whether it's raw or ripe tea. Generally 30-ish year old sheng pu'erh produce a more ginseng-like flavor which give way to interesting woody (sometimes sandalwood), mellow Chinese herb funk as they age further (which can be amazing if you're ready for adventure). Younger teas run the gamut of floral, spicy, honey sweet flavors, often with a strong wood-bark background. I'd strongly encourage whisky connoisseurs to give good kong fu tea a go if they can. It's completely eye-opening.
Oh, and I love how newcomers think of old people when they drink pu'erh. Funnily enough, that's also how, traditionally, pu'erh's (especially aged raw or ripe pu'erh) been viewed.
I love this channel!! Keep up the amazing work!!
Impressed with Dan when he “tapped” the table as a sign of thanks (time stamp 4:49)
And 15:01
Very popular drink in Russian prison is "Chifir". Old tradition since GULAG, since alcohol was forbidden they drink very strong tea.
Being a tea drinker, I loved this episode
Came in from the title thinking they were going to be doing something crazy and am pleasantly surprised to see they aren’t. Would love to go through a tasting like this.
I like how they weren't rude and making fun of something new
So this why uncle Iroh liked tea so much 🍵🐸
seems like tea "high" might be a more accurate description
Nice... Was waiting for the Tea Leaves aged in a Whiskey Barrel lol. Thank you So Han for the episode (Dry Week coincidence)
One of the best episodes in a while! Super interesting stuff!
This was a good little sidebar. Informative and understandable. It is all about the human mind.
As a heathen animist who's very into Gung Fu Cha this is awesome to see such an accessible dive into the experience of being Tea Drunk
If this guys biz is not kicking... it will be after this episode. Good job to everyone involved.
Very interesting. Seems like this experience has so much to do with mindfulness and having insight into one's own feelings in their body.
I have a friend who owns a tea company in Taiwan, and I've found I really love white tea!
Well this is not what I normally think of when I think Texas. Thanks for opening my mind a bit
Nice relaxing vIdeo for a Saturday morning. Of course, sipping on coffee but am now wanting to try some smoky tea!
I lived in China for 9 years and actually went to tea shops to practice speaking Chinese (because the tea shop people are forced to converse with you as long as they are serving tea.) This guy knows his stuff.
Love this episode. I love Tea, drink it daily. I knew most of what was said but still learned things too.
So Han was the one to get me into tea when he did stuff with The Modern Rogue, so happy to see you guys doing it too! Love West China Tea, really great stuff.
A whiskey channel doing a video about tea and have the sponsor of the video be a coffee didn’t expect that to happen but so happy it did.
Growing up we grew a ton of green tea. As a kid I would smoke a few really big bong rips and there was definitely something going on other than oxygen deprivation.
I love the opening of this video; hair tied back , sunglass resting on the head , cool over the steering column start of the car and at the .05 mark the babe seat behind Rex.....
I do enjoy a glass of tea. This was a very interesting episode introducing me to other teas. Thanks. Cheers
"It just tastes like it tastes." While I understand the point he is making about tea, this can definitely go for whiskey sometimes. Sometimes you gotta just tone it down, stop thinking as much and just enjoy it and the situation and company you're in while drinking.
I always wondered why I liked drinking tea in my local tea house in Germany. I would spend 2 to 3 hours there slurping tea and snacking different japanese snacks an feel calm and refreshed.
So-Han! What a great tea teacher
You mean a great "tea"cher.
So I am currently tea drunk and I’m here because I didn’t know it was a thing😂😂😂 had to look up why I was feeling this way. Quite beautiful honestly
Love this episode, I've ever seen a "Tea Bar" before
well now I want fancy tea
Some of this channels best videos have nothing to do with whiskey.
Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait for them to ferment a rubber tire and drink it, but this was a super nice watch.
Yes, but a old school real rubber tire or a newer synthetic rubber tire?
@@modarkthemauler old school. Used. Has more character.
Thanks Rex and Co., very interesting topic
Of course, Dry Week! What a great subject to explore! Personally, I've always hated tea, a childhood thing, but it is fascinating all the same. I've always known it all comes from the same plant, but interesting the different ways it is treated. Bravo!
Sorry, I'm into a Wild Turkey right now, I served all of my dry weeks/months during Viet Nam...
You know a lot the tea the USA has had access to up until today is the equivalent of bud-light. We just haven't been given access to high quality leaves that aren't dust or leaves that aren't low quality. Which is often why tea here in the USA is bitter.
If you ever do wanna give tea a second chance, I implore you to get a curator's choice from west china tea! This will allow you to mention what about tea you never liked and help the fulfillment team pinpoint the best teas for you to try.
Additionally, I just wanna thank you for your service if you did serve and thank you back home. Kind Regards
When I had my first time proper tea in China it almost felt like tripping on mushrooms lightly. My friend felt the same thing.
Back then I thought that this is because it was 35 C (~100 F) outside and we were sipping hot liquid.
Later I learned that this really is a thing. For this feeling of being high I would recommend steamed Japanese tea. Although I like the taste of Chinese pan heated tea more, die Japanese stuff has the strongest effect.
I’m watching this whilst drinking my tea, and now I’m intrigued.
A coffee ad in a tea video? Very brave choice lol
What a great way to learn how to experience.
Super interesting! I need to do this myself.
While EGCG is anxiolytic, its onset is much slower than L-theanine, which is also anxiolytic, so that (plus placebo) is the calmness they were experiencing in the time frame of the first tea.
I'm lucky that I'm here in Taiwan, and I can experience and appreciate so many teas.
Good quality tea can definitely influence your mood and sensations. Kind of similar to the way terpenes effect the Cannabis experience. Just much less intense but definitely pretty complex.
OH MY GOODNESS THE SLURP MADE MY TEA HIT SO DIFFERENT MY EYES ROLLED 😭😳 thank you for that
This guy is the product, not the tea. Holy crap this guy can SELL. 👏👏👏
Yes! My two favorite drinks-tea and whiskey! Super similar experiences as you tease out different flavors and explore the effects of different terra and processing.
A great episode. And a great music choice 👍🏼
Started QiGing a manoth ago, this drunk feeling when you get aligned is amazing.
look at all the local Austin youtube folks spreading the love for small businesses in the area!
Love this
Mernin y’all from San Antonio 🤘🏻🤘🏻
i have not had high grade tea in decades...been more into whiskey and coffee...but this makes me want to track down a Tea House!
Tea drinking sounds very spiritual
Great video!
Very much enjoyed that. I even forced my wife to watch it on the main TV and she enjoyed as well.
i have no idea who the guy with the motörhead shirt is , but one thing i know is that the dude prepared himself for this episode by watching probably this video with So-Han : ua-cam.com/video/ixlOebAxhbI/v-deo.html
(compare to 4:48) and i respect that!
great video as always guys
Loved this
I do like myself some puerh tea. Tea and coffee go well with cigars
I love these videos!
You guys turned me on to West China Tea House in your last episode with So Han. It’s by far one of the best tea houses around with such interesting craft tea. I love seeing these crossovers and all the cool stuff both of you are doing.
Greatest dry week episode EVER
Fancy dan! EVERYTHING DRUNKER THAN EVERYONE ELSE! (Great shirt)
Once again, superb content
Next time I’m visiting friends in Austin I’ll have to check them out.
didnt know cold smoke a tea or ferment it. learned something 😁👍
Holy damn. Now i know why my earl grey makes me feel so good and happy
That seems like a fun experience. I wonder if there is anything like this in western NY? A guided tea tour for noobs would be fun
I'm peeping that motorhead shirt! My man knows good music! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
🤘💀
