The made in 1991 Sony CDP X777ES laser will never burn out. It’s so strong 💪 When this player is not working 99.9% chance it's something else than the laser. (CD players made after 1994 have smaller lasers, and more fragile) This type of old CD players are very rare and expensive, and becoming more expensive in time for sure. And a lot of them are in de recycle bin because some technician was saying “bad laser” but almost al the time it was something else what was causing the problem for sure. It’s I think the best CD player built by Sony. It’s also direct drive, so never a bad spindle! The most common problem is bad caps (fade out display? replace the display caps and new again) or the mechanism needs attention (CD skipping, and hanging problem) oil and a clean and the skipping and hanging are gone. The CD load mechanism works with a belt, and need also oil, if it is dry or the belt is old, It will not load the CD correctly and that looks like a dead 💀 laser, but it’s not! Easy fix. I think it’s never necessarily, but for your information you can replace the laser diode in 2022 with a cheap one from the same Sony time period.
@@inputerase Sorry, but if RF signal is bad, the most probable cause is the laser pickup. Capacitors, are very rare faulty in laser pickup zone. I've seen some lasers pickup, and besides burn out laser, there are other causes of faulty laser pickup, like fungus in the anti reflex salts used in the optics, tiny deformation in plastic pieces, etc.... The laser pickup used in KSS-281a are the same that in others KSS at the same era. I've replaced some laser diodes in laser pickups, like KSS-271a, 272, 190, etc... The method used by me is published in DIYaudio. And no, it is not easy.

You have to replace the display power capacitors. I did the same! My display is as new again!
