So, before SACD players had HDMI, the only way to hear the SACD layer was through the analog outputs? The digital outputs didn't bitstream the SACD layer?
In 2003 Sony launched the SCD-XA9000ES which for the first time could send DSD 2CH\MCH data digitally to a suitable receiver. This digital output preceded HDMI and it was called "i.Link", basically a FireWire cable and interface. So this players could dispense the analog outputs. The caveat was that at the time the only receiver that could get this output was Sony's very own STR-DA9000ES. As long as no equalizing or surround effects were used, the DSD bitstream remained unchanged from iLink input to the receiver's DACs that, by all accounts didn't downgraded to PCM prior to analog conversion.
Multichannel is a gimmick; it has no power. It's great for film, but for music, properly mixed and mastered stereo is the only way to go. It's so much more powerful.
I love the ES Series
What a beauty
Audio Electronics this unit is an incredible piece of engineering, will be hard to let this one go.

Yes, that seems to be the case. Doesn’t appear the optical out could handle the SACD layer.

Did the music originally have more than two channels? Not likely.
Have you ever heard Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon in surround?
@@roendi1 it wasn’t recorded in surround so no.
You really have no idea. You could already buy the LP as a Qudrophonie
@@roendi1 that’s four channel, not true surround sound as we know it today. It was a gimmick.

I like the option of listening to the Multichannel version to compare.

2 channel > multi channel..

You guys are sort of right. The main differentiating feature for the SACD format is discrete multichannel recordings. I hope that clears things up?
