- I brought down a dying maple which loomed over the cabin. Its falling branches had already damaged the roof tarp, so I decided to bring it down before it did anymore damage to the cabin ...or us. I also climbed high up on the cabin to trim the ridgepole, and I milled some lumber on my portable sawmill to complete the snowmobile camper for my upcoming trip with it.

your method of felling a tree is the only way for pinpoint accuracy, .I've learned it years ago. taught to me by stihl company !!! you did good !!!!
I was raised in Ontario probably somewhere around you on my grandfathers farms cutting splitting and piling endless cords of wood not realizing what a precious resource it really is. My grandfather would always quiz me on what the wood was judging from the bark. Now that I'm out west I don't take it for granted anymore. Your vids take me back. Keep em comin!

Looking at all the trees covered with ice reminds me of my father. He was raised in western Tennessee back in the 20's. He said in the winters, the bark on the trees would bust in the middle of the night.
I live in Tennessee. I remember a particularly destructive ice storm in 1994 during which much timber was lost including some of my own, though I no longer own that property.
@@johnbeatty3821 If I Remember correctly that ice storm knocked out most electricity to jackson, tn and surrounding areas for 2 weeks or more. I was around 14, our family had to sleep together in the living room by the fireplace and cook our meals with a camping stove. For some reason I enjoyed that as a young boy. Thanks for bringing back some forgotten memories.

I noticed the same on my new home , somehow i think the activity over the roots and such influenced the trees so I also made the same decision and now I can see the reasons . And most of all am learning to be mindful around trees more now not to damage or upset
there spaces. Have alot of trees here in so east colorado also, So glad you fine folks are safe and sound and are getting the same guidances and

I've a small Norwood Sawmill and I'd like to offer a tip someone gave to me. At 1:51 in the video I can see a slab with a lot of taper. What I've done to get a more uniform cant is to measure each end of the log, minus the small end from the large end divide by 2. That number I'll raise the small end and theoretically both slabs will be equal. I have 1/2", 3/4", 1", 5/4", 6/4", & 2" blocks that I use to raise the smaller end. Works out pretty good. Great job on all you projects! I love all your videos.

Just a suggestion from an old guy who used to spend a lot of time climbing ladders for living. Rather than carrying things in your hand use a rope to pull up or let down the extra tools, that way you have both hands for the ladder.
You might look into selling figured wood to knife makers for handles
Agreed. A rope to haul up tools is how I roll as well.

those marks inside the tree are from the ambrosia beetle. The pattern left makes for good furniture or turnings. They call it ambrosia maple. That could be why the dead branches.
I did the same thing when I built my place. Left too many trees too close to the house because they looked good. Then I learned the mistake. In the winter during thawing periods they would unload heavy wet snow bombs onto the roof. In the summer they presented a fire danger with branches hanging over the house. So those trees are gone now. It would have been easier if I had taken them down before I built but as they say live and learn.

When my Dad moved from Brooklyn NY to Florida one of the first things I did on property was measuring the close enough trees to the house.
This was lightning strike territory, and tall pine trees were surrounding the house.
That and the high iron in the water turned the trees into 100+ foot lighting rods.
I took down 8 large trees and made a lot of fire wood.
I can't wait to see the tin roof on the place.

Really enjoy your videos. I do have a chain saws suggestion. Use your chain brake whenever you are moving about with a running saw, and especially if you are climbing a ladder
