1 month with the Fuji X-Pro2 - thoughts and photos

If a camera inspires you to just shoot every day, then That is the most important feature. Between the X-Pro2 and X100T, one is always with me.
Yes the newer Fujis has 2 more MPs and are "slightly" faster and have an additional film simulation or two but the X-Pro2 is in that sweet spot and I think the best camera Fujifilm has made when it comes to build, unique IQ and handling.
That unique X-Trans RGB array really threw Adobe for a spin and while it does a good job overall, they haven't totally ironed out the de-mosaic-ing/sharpening of pixel level conversion, the worming you hear about is Adobe's inability to totally make sense of the random RGB pixel patterns of that sensor, unlike the standard Bayer array that is consistent thus easy to convert... It's a price we pay for that filmic Fuji look and that grain structure that is Soooo good.
DNG converters like Iridient seems to do a fine job with RAF files, and for a LOT less money if it becomes a concern.
Honestly 98% of the time, Lr has been all I need... especially if I am just posting online.

@@mrnavarropablo Here's the deal; I have spent a month's time about a year ago extensively comparing and tweaking to match Lr Fuji RAW files with C1, C1 express and guess what?! I found in the end it is all the same. The only difference is that C1 out the gate handles the "sharpening" better where Lr you will have to tweek a couple sliders right off the bat and in the end I found I had Identical results when pixel peeping. You just have to work for it in Lr.
Now before you say anything, just know I've been exclusively shooting Fuji X since 2012 after leaving Nikon, also like so many I am invested in Adobe Lr/Ps and the file system with my Macs and other external HDs. Switching to C1 at this point would be a long arduous task that I don't have time for.
So it comes down to pros and cons, Do I want quick and easy without the robust library system I built since Lr has been around or leave it be and "occasionally" tweak my sharpening and clarity sliders when I see fit to get that C1 quality right out the gate.
In all honesty I saw no difference in my edits in both programs so I concluded the extra cost, deeply learning a whole new interface and library reconstruction wasn't worth it.

Hello Arianna,
I have been using an X-Pro 2 since 2017 and I discovered a very useful tip that you may not know to adjust very easily your exposure.
Just put the shutter speed dial on "T" (Time) and then you can set the speed directly with the front command dial (use your right index finger).
As you can set the aperture on the lens ring with your left hand and the compensation with your right thumb (exposure compensation dial), you'll see that it's become faster to adjust the exposure to your need.

I have owned the XPro-2 and now the XPro-3. An add on grip or leather half-case (I have a Gariz) makes the handling of larger lenses better. I am glad the camera has inspired you. Note I don't think there is any reason to upgrade to the Pro-3 BTW.

I have a metal hand grip (plus bulky base) for my X-pro2 which is a good grip but, well, bulky. The Gariz case looks lovely but in short supply - what isn't? Thanks.

I've had the Xpro2 for a couple of years and may have been getting jaded, so watching your video has got me remembering, hey, this IS a great camera!
Regarding the lack of IBIS, do experiment with auto-ISO. I'm a control freak, but this is one modern function that has won me over after decades of film shooting on fully manual cameras.
You can set the highest ISO that you are comfortable with and the longest shutter speed that you wish to use for the lens and you will not experience camera shake in most situations. The camera allows three auto-ISO setting so you can scroll through them based on the lens or the quality requirements.

I’ve been shooting film consistently for the past 3 years and just moved across the country. That being said, I no longer have access to a local film lab, so shooting film everyday just got way less practical for me. I just found a deal on an x-pro2 and snatched it up! I don't take my Sony A7iii around cause the lenses are too big, and the Xpro1 made me fall in love with everyday photography. I have much more fun shooting little moments than big landscapes or planned shoots.

I love the smaller Fujifilm cameras like the Xpro 2 especially when used with lenses like the Fujinon 35mm f2, you can carry them around all day and not be aware that you have a camera with you unlike my main camera which is the Nikon D850 and vertical grip plus a selection of large pro lenses.

Great review. I just got the X Pro 2 after using the X-E2 for over 4 years. I just keep the shutter above 125s pretty much all the time, so no issues with blurry shots.

Good commentary. I used Nikon (for sports) for a number of years, and then dabbled in both Olympus and Fuji. I started with the XPro1 and EM5Mk2, and then moved to the XPro2, and later, the XT2, and then XH1. Loved the XPro2 and used it a lot for a number of years.
But in the last couple of years, I've moved more to using my Olympus and even invested in the EM1X. I like the full dials on the XPro2, but for any other Fuji camera (XT2, which I traded in; XH1 bought for its IBIS), I find them cumbersome. Frankly, the dual front and rear dial set up on my Nikons are faster, and the Olympus emulates that with excellent chunky dials, but in a smaller, lighter form factor than my former Nikon D3s. I never use the compensation dial because I shoot full manual, and the ISO dial setup is clunky - I rather the compensation dial be the ISO. IBIS is so useful; Olympus amazes me with how steady it is at low shutter speeds. As for the film simulations, I love them too, but because I shoot RAW and do a lot of tweaks in LR (I shoot a lot of fashion/portraits), it's a less of an advantage to me than before. The XPro2 is really made for primes; as you said, zooms feel awkward on them. They're better on the XH1, but the Olympus lens and body integration are very comfortable to hold.
In terms of quality, I still have all three systems, and 95% of the time, the images I achieve out of my 20 MP m4/3 vs 24 MP X-Trans vs 45 MP Nikon are indistinguable: nobody can tell the difference. I have kids now, so there is always a premium on compact equipment that can produce excellent images. I'm convinced 90% of the world only needs m4/3. The full frame/megapixel race is ridiculous.
The bottom line for me is that Fuji system is fantastic, but I'm no longer as convinced that the advantages it offers are so much actual advantages but rather that they work well for photographers with a specific approach to shooting. That being said, the XPro series just has something about it that's hard to deny. If I had to sell it all, my aging but still mighty fine XPro2 would be the last camera I'd part with likely. And if the XPro4 (I skipped the XPro3) had IBIS and a few other changes, I'd still likely invest in it.

I 10000% agree. At the end of the day, almost all newer cameras are going to put out amazing quality images (especially used for web and social media content). The main difference is what you prefer shooting. I think people like to hype of full frame and higher megapixels because they're justifying paying a more expensive price when they just want the name brand or the tech specs...but that's just my opinion. I love both Olympus and Fuji and can hardly tell between the images I get out of these 2 systems vs. full frame or even medium format digital cameras!

Before I started using Fuji mirrorless, I was using the Olympus Ep-1 and Ep-3 micro 4/3 cameras. Loved the lenses and loved the image quality but got tired of the bodies breaking. Switched to X-Pro1 and X-Pro2 and have been very happy with my decision.

I shoot raw and process in latest versions of Lightroom classic and Photoshop. Must admit I haven’t had any issues processing raw files yet. I remember hearing about issues several years ago, but assumed it had been sorted now. Glad you love your X Pro 2. I love mine too!

As a Sony shooter looking at getting a secondary Fuji camera, I couldn’t imagine ever using a camera where you have to go into a menu to adjust iso, aperture, SS or ISO. Love that the manual dials are there on the Fuji bodies, and that there are enough wheels on Sony bodies to control all your settings.

The Xpro2 was my first Fuji camera and I loved it. I took a lot of my favorite photos with that camera and then sold it and got an XH1 but realized it was the wrong move because although it was a newer camera with more features it was missing something the Xpro2 had, charm, simplicity and form. I sold the XH1 and got an XE4 that I love because of it's minimalist style, features and size. Btw I also use the 90mm f2 with the XE4 along with the 14mm f2.8 and 50mm f2.

To avoid blur & keep a good shutter speed you should try shooting at ISO 800, the X-Pro4 out performs the X-t4, X-Pro3 & S-S10 at that ISO.

I started photographing when i was 14 years old, 25 years ago and have a professional career for 17 years. Also i already have fuji equipment and already multiple Fuji cameras.
Still, i kinda have the same experience with the x-pro2 which i also bought 2 months ago.
It really urges me to use it every day and i also started to photograph stuff around from where i live, which i did not care about before.
Though this is also because of the German shutdown.
I use the xpro for non commercial stuff and also play around with custom film simulations. You can look up non-included film simulations on the Fuji Weekly blog. There are some nice alterations to try out.
There is also an app.

If you love the film look, you should try adapting vintage lenses to it. I adapted all my 1960's Pentax Takumar lenses to the X-T4 and the results have been stunning. Each lens has it's own character and unique look with out sacrificing sharpness. I think you'd totally fall in love with the look. Thanks for the great video.

I think your choice and reasoning on choosing this camera are identical to those that made it one of my prefaces for considering this body. The lens is also one of those I would of chosen to fit on this body.
All cameras have their limitations , but being aware of them enables you to minimise those and extenuate the cameras strengths whilst using it.
I am not surprised it has become your everyday camera. Water on the lens is the only drawback with weather sealed bodies and shielding the lens or pointing it downwards addresses those issues most likely.
Zone focusing and back focusing will also help grab shots on the move and enable a more considered shot to be taken when more detailed focusing is required for effect .
I wish you all the very best with your ventures with your new camera. Regarding Capture One, I thought I read somewhere that Fuji users could get this free and would only have to pay if you required the upgraded specs . If that is so, then give it a try and use it on your Olympus files as well, as it may save on paying for Lightroom .

Yes I think someone mentioned that a free version of Capture One is available that handles the Fuji raw files so I will give that a try when I get a chance!
I definitely agree with your point about being aware of a camera's weaknesses and working around them/focusing on the strengths. This is largely why some of the cons of the camera aren't a big deal for me since I've learned how to use the camera to still get awesome photos from it.

Ok so for the worming issue, drop the detail slider to zero, bump the amount slider up as needed (I usually go around 100 when shooting wide open, around 70 or even lower when stopped down. Mask as needed. This fixes it for the most part. :)

Since I took my camera in for repairs a few days ago (loose focus joystick) I've really been missing it, and this video kinda feels like showing an addict his daily fix and expecting him not to have cravings hahaha.
I agree with all of your points, especially the utility of the dials and the weight/size of the camera. I really really love how it feels, it's heavy enough to feel well built, but not hard to carry.
The image quality isn't even something I need to talk about, it really is goated.
The point you make about the RAW files not being well handled by LR is completely true. I saw in another one of your videos that you got recommended C1, the free version, and it's pretty great, but as you say, if you pay for LR it should work. I've been thinking about importing to C1 and batch exporting as DNG, to see how the files look, (might report back if you're interested) but I have another solution.
There's this thing called Iridient X-Transformer, which turns the RAF files to DNGs as well, and it works pretty great. You can also change the model on the Exif there so you can test out other Film Simulations not available to the X-Pro2 on the pictures, and it handles the sharpening and processing speed better than with RAFs.
The only con is that it costs I think 30 bucks, but it's got a trial version, although I think that leaves the pictures with watermarks.
Will test out C1 Batch Exports to DNG and report back.

I miss it so much I almost bought a X-T20 just because it was cheap and it was a Fuji, but then I thought I would neglect that one and didn’t feel good about that hahaha.
There must be many other solutions for the raw files, I hope you find one you can work with soon. Either way, Fuji JPGs are great, and you don’t always need it hahaha

I came from olympus too, em1 original. I was one of the people whose aperture dial failed. That's what drew me to Fuji. I didn't end up missing IBIS since fuji handles high ISO better but to each their own. I do miss the 20mm pancake though.

I agree that a leather half-case would make the camera feel even more secure for you. Without the proprietary version on my X-Pro1, I certainly wouldn't have been able to handle either the 16mm f/1.4 or 23mm f/1.4 lenses nearly as comfortably. You may want to consider firstly converting any of your favourite raw files into tiffs in order to utilise Lightroom effectively. The Silkypix free raw conversion software has a poor interface, but you can do the basics fairly quickly and then move on. Alternatively, you can plug your camera directly into a computer and take advantage of Fujifilm X-Raw Studio to modify your film simulations if desired. Unfortunately with that, you can only output jpegs.

6:30 I put a small strip of vinyl wrap for automobile- and motorcycle-decorations over diopter dial. They are elastic enough to conform to the contour of the dial, and can prevent it from getting knocked out of position.

Hey Arianna, wonderful review! I found you by looking up XPro2 reviews in 2021 as a first time Fujifilm buyer and wondering if it was 'outdated' per se, and this is so reassuring. I've contemplated the X100V (no interchangeable lenses), XT30 (no rangefinder), and XPro3 (too expensive as you said, ha)... it seems like the XPro2 is the perfect intersection of everything I'm looking for and the sensor hasn't been updated appreciably for the newer line of 26mp cameras. My question is how do you feel about the ergonomics of the camera? I have relatively smaller hands and was worried the XPro2 might be a tad too big but objectively it's not much bigger than the X100 or XT30. Thoughts?

i have tiny hands and have had no issue with the xpro2. that being said, i also don't carry it without a strap and when i'm just walking around i usually have it slung over my shoulder most of the time. but i haven't used much smaller cameras before so it's always been comparable to other ones I've used! the dials are also awesome in terms of ergonomics.

Strange story with colors since XE-1 has same sensor as xpro-1 and colors there are second to none.From all three Xpro's that I own the most film looking is xpro-1 and this one has also one of the best white balance of the three.I never used Light room with RAW xtrans files, mainly Iridient and Capture One.

I switch between my X-Pro2 and a Yashica Electro35 GS fixed lens rangefinder. I recently sold my Nikon scanner so I am no longer developing my own Tri-X at home and sending it off for developing and scanning. I usually wait until I have about four rolls before mailing because I am not worried about the time it takes. I am new to the X-Pro2 along with a XF 35mm f2 lens so am still learning its quirks. Great info for me looking at replacing my beloved X100F with the X-pro 2 cheers. Regarding the dioptre I'll just use a tab of black gaffer tape to hold it in position. I'm conflicted I think nothing of buying old film cameras, yet I'm very nervy about buying a used digital camera..I figure far more possible faults with them....times going to tell.

The only difference between the W-126 and W-126S batteries is Fuji added a heat sync onto the W-126S when people shoot 4K Video on the X-Pro2. Otherwise they are identical except for the W-S126S price hike for that heat sink.

i love fuji's rangefinder-esque line of cameras. the xpro, x-e, and x100 have a look and tactile feel that comes very close to the experience of shooting with a film camera. unfortunately, fuji for years has been resistant to add features like ibis and fully-articulated screens to that line. having both an olympus em-1 and several fuji cameras it always pains me to think how much more awesome the fujis would be if they only added these features. i had hoped that once they started adding these features to their slr line (x-t, x-h, etc) that they would eventually come to their rangefinder line, but sadly i fear their answer to those of use looking for these features will be to buy something from the slr line, which shows a complete lack of understanding of what draws us to these cameras in the first place.

And if you still wanna try out to shoot film occasionally, shooting a rangefinder camera, go for one of Russian Zorki or Fed cameras; those could be find for peanuts...

The diopter might be a slight inconvinience, but I'd rather have a diopter that moves a little bit rather than having nothing at all and be forced to buy correction lenses that are impossible or very expensive to find like on the X-Pro 1
a lockable diopter would be nice tho, or at least one that is not on the far left of the body, if it would be on the right it would not rub in a backpack or someting and would not be changed. The diopter on my X-T1 is on the side of the viewfinder bump and therefore doesn't get changed at all when in a bag

I have the xt3 and I’m looking at Pro2 for a extra, coming from Nikon full frame I do miss the ff but not the size,weight and low light ! But I’m pretty happy with it. Are you still happy with the Pro2?

I think the differences using Fuji RAW files between Light Room and Capture One are really negligible especially today. If you're using your Fuji mainly for the JPG then I would definitely recommend FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO

I also have an olympus and love it but it is not a micro 4/3. It is a nice "point and shoot" with great telescopic lense. I would like to keep this for my wife but then get an olympus 4/3 camera as an complimant to the fugi. Which olympus, for serious amateur photographer, would you recommend?

I’m enjoying your video but I can’t help but make a comment about the battery which everyone seems to mention. Before digital I shot films 35 mm, twin lens reflex or medium format camera. If possible I never went anywhere with my cameras without extra batteries ,either in my pockets or camera bag. So the Fuji battery have never been a problem with or for me.

I love my Xpro2. Like you I find it's fun to use. Why? I have no idea! And I find I am making better photos. No idea why either. Unless I decide to upgrade to a Leica - not likely - I will be shooting with the Xpro2 for a long time to come.

I have 5 batteries. I don't worry about battery life!
Set up the Auto ISO on the D pad and just live with it on Auto
Get one of the fast primes, they're all great and you'll have trouble wanting a zoom again.

If the xpro 3 didn't have that goofy back screen and if it had kept the d pad, that would almost be the perfect camera for me. At this point I think I would prefer the xpro 2 even though it's an older sensor with poorer battery life.

Quality wise I'd say the difference really isn't noticeable when working with digital files and posting to social media/website. But I do use them both differently where I shoot Olympus in RAW and Fuji in jpegs. I do find that when I was shooting Olympus in jpeg, some photos would come out where skin tones were overly orange/saturated when shooting a person within a blue-heavy landscape. But other than that the colors were beautiful from Olympus jpegs as well - just different since I use Fuji film simulations

I still use my EM1 Mark II for any paid/client work! The reason why I got the xpro2 is because it was a different second body (my em10 ii was just sitting on the shelf not being used, but was my backup body) and also because i wanted the rangefinder-style camera as my daily camera!

Probably the XPro2. Not because of the camera specs or features, but simply because i like carrying around the XPro2 much more. It looks much more casual to carry around in front of people or even as an accessory than the EM1 II which looks closer to a traditional DSLR camera. Whatever camera inspires you to shoot more is always better to me, so that would be the XPro2!

X100F & X pro-2 (in used market)
P. S. I prefer "one camera one lens" philosophy...
thus,
Ill be sticking to 23mm f2 only in case i buy X-pro2
I came across one youtube video where the host is complaining about
Images taken by X100F/V are under exposed & have excess green tones over image taken by X-pro2..
Whats your take on this..?
Considering my requirements,
Is it worth spending couple of 100 bucks extra for X pro-2 or shall i stick with X100F..?
I truly appriciate your opion before i go ahead with the purchase

Thanks for the comment! To be completely honest, I have no idea about the colors of the X100F/V since I've never shot with either of them before. If you check out my video on why I got the X-Pro2, there will be some more information. Mainly I wanted the interchangeable lenses which I think makes a big difference in making the camera more versatile in the long run!

Try sony a7iii then u will know how bad the batt is. I only have 2 sony batteries and they can last me days during travel.

IBIS does not help for anything what is moving fast.I never took photo of a animal or person where you have to use 1s or 1/10 of second unless you want to have blurry photo. IBIS is also less effective for everything with longer focal length (medium and long telephoto).

I agree - only a fast shutter speed will stop motion in a photo. However, I've noticed IBIS is the difference between a photo at around 1/25 coming out blurry or clear. This is where I struggle the most, especially when I'm shooting at blue hour.

I remember that I shot Olympus with as low as possible ISO and slower speed while using xpro-1 and pro-2 had no issue to crank up ISO to 6400.Think that noise looks best on Fujifilm somewhere between 3200 and 8000.

Don't know if you're familiar with the so called recipes on this system? If not than fujixweekly.com from Richy Roesch is probably a game changer. He creates recipes which are look a likes from the old Skool films. This gave me so much more fun in shooting, especially since I don't like Lightroom or other programs. So shooting only jpeg is a real possibility 😁

Thanks for the feedback on Fujifilm's X-Pro2 from a user's perspective which had some good content. A couple of presentation points to improve the quality and professionalism of your videos:
1. Stop the constant flying hands movement, it's incredibly distracting and takes away from content
2. Put the coffee cup down...again it's distracting and detracts from your work
3. Stop playing with / adjusting your hair
