It's a very nice piece, I got one new (black dial) from the AD 3 or 4 months ago. Straightforward design and kind of stocky, I think it weighs about 155 g. I liked it from the start but it has grown on me. And, I have noticed, it gets a lot of attention... Jenni doesn't seem to like this model for some reason. I love it!

Being a doctor and a science guy, it was my obvious choice when I finally took the plunge. Only after I purchased the watch did I find out about the Milgauss history and meaning of its name, fate brought us together. I bought it in 2015, and still admire its beauty.
I bought a fake one to see if I liked it. It was quite attractive, but the glass faded along with other anomalies. Did the job, and bought a real one for $7200. Today you’ll pay $12,000+. Very happy and satisfied.😃😎👍
When it is "relaunched" I simplest love it. Mainly because I'm a Electrical Engineer and it is a celebration of an era where the electric and magnetic fields are changing the world. The green glass remember me when I used by first time one oscilloscopes, the old ones has a green screen that has similar tint due phosphor on backside. It is not visible but on inside the case back they put the "magnetic field intensity" simbol, what remembers me my electromagnetic classes and when I start to work designing eletric transformers. Besides it represents a lot to me unfortunately the price here in Brazil is prohibitive, it is almost a brand new car! when I save all the money probably it was discontinued by a long time...
I had a big budget for my first Rolex.. saved for many years.. the AD showed me multiple models.. then she presented to me the z blue Mille.. I handed over my credit card instantly.. I can look at that dial for extended periods of time and have no idea what time it is.. that’s when you know you purchased the right watch.. thank you Rolex for giving us that z blue dial..

I bought my Milgauss about 10 years ago. I went with the black dial green glass. In my opinion, it's the best the combination, allowing the green glass to shine beautifully without being overwhelmed by the dial. I bought it because it's beautiful in a very subtle way, not screaming Rolex. I never like any of my watches to be a focal point. It's a very accurate watch. Maybe I'm lucky, or maybe most of them are so well built to be accurate. Mine gains 1 second per week. I couldn't ask for a more accurate one. It is also an interesting piece. Its lume has two colors. 15, 30 and 45 minute markets are blue and rest, including the hands, are green at night. I guess it's one of those watches you have to own it to better appreciate it. With so many people wear a diver without getting their watches wet, I think I'm ok with the waterproofness of my Milgauss. My divers (the ones I actually wear when swimming in the lake) are Casio blue marlin and G-shock. No big deal if any of them ended up in the bottom of the lake. It's a nice watch, no doubt!
Being a Railway Signalling Engineer I had to have this watch so bought the plain black dial version in 2009 and wear it every day. I love how it's unique and creates conversations with people who ask about it. It's a keeper for me but now the black dial is no longer available, it's a good investment too :)

This. The demand simply trickles down. When all other steel sports models have years waiting list or they go for multiple times MSRP, it makes sense that people look towards what else is available from the brand. Particularly when demand is motivated to a large extent by brand recognition.
The Z-Blue is easily Rolex’s killer sunray blue dial, but it needs the sunshine to pop! And when it pops with that emerald green crystal it burns a turquoise through aqua marine sparkling hue, like the most beautiful sea under gin clear skies. The crazy bright orange lightening bolt hand is so off the hook for the hyper conservative Rolex mothership it almost makes me laugh out loud. It’s such a charismatic and intriguing piece, sensual curves and yet a bold reassuring heavy sports piece. When this model gets the bullet from the product line future watch collectors will never believe their eyes. Rolex did what?... just a fun summery piece.
Love my Air-King. I have a Batman Jubilee but wear the Air-King 99% of the time. Same as a Milgauss but cheaper. No lightening bolt. (I thought is was slightly larger but same size.)
Bought the Milgauss for sentimental reasons, first it was introduced same year as my introduction to the world. It’s quirkiness reflects the many professions & personalities I encountered in my 43 yr working career beginning in Air Traffic control radar & ending as a MRI Research Engineer. I worked alongside many neurologist, physicists & technicians everyone of them with their unique quirks. Watch design elements: green crystal reminds me of the glass insulators found on 50’s & 60’s power poles, Orange indices resemble the color code bands on resistors. Lightning bolt needs no explanation. It’s a keeper in my collection.
The only Rolex I would buy just because it’s not at all mainstream and most people have no idea what it is 😁 But I didn’t realise that this would make me a nerd 😅
I believe that among the entire Rolex lineup, there are only two models that show that the company is still able to innovate and take risks; the Milgauss and the Skydweller. Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad to encourage such adventurous undertakings when done right.
I've had the black/green Milgauss for 8 years now and love lots of things about it, I love the design and colours and it does make me smile every time I look at it. The only thing that has made me tempted to sell in recent years is the abundance of polished surfaces, especially the centre link on the bracelet. You can wear all day every day for sure but be ready to pick up lots of scratches. I had it serviced recently and it looks pristine which makes me want to wear it all the time less in a way. Just need to get some marks back then all will be ok :)
Great vid Jenni and very informative, I am one of those people who is a fan of the Milgauss. I began with 116400 black dial back in 2011 , then had the inch for green glass so got GV black dial in 2017 and now very recently the Z Blue from my AD , 10 years of experiencing this model and I am mesmerised by the Z Blue , its beautiful and a keeper for the collection.
I only recently got really into watches, so this was the first time I've seen this watch, and I gotta say, for some reason I love it! The white dial version with the orange lightning bolt just totally catches me. I totally could see it on a crazy scientist from some 80s movie a la Doc Brown. But even though I really like the style, I personally still wouldn't spend 10 grand on it.

Absolutely true. But still some bloggers push it telling us it will the new paul newman. Nonsense. The only people buy it are those who can’t get anything else in steel and hope to make a deal later.
Can't get it in Germany from an AD yet. Not Munich, not Regensburg. At one AD there are two in the display window. Still no way. I was saving money for years to get it and there is no way to buy it for retail. The "hate" is not real. It's still as hard to get as all the other steel sport Rolex watches.
The Rolex Milgauss blue face green glass is one of the most beautiful Rolex watches ever. One of the most interesting and beautiful watches of any brand.
I love this watch for the design choices that when taken separately are weird, e.g., green sapphire crystal, lightning bolt seconds hand, and multicolor indices. I also like that it's built like a tank. Take all these details together and you have a design that is a leap of faith and Rolex goodness. Who says the Crown only makes boring watches? The Milgauss is a beautiful watch. Plus, it's a minimalist watch (not even a date complication) that doesn't look like one. Rolex's are out of my budget range currently (Orients are my speed), but I do wear a fairly faithful-looking Milgauss homage from time to time hoping I'll win the lottery one day and maybe get the real thing.
Milgauss matches omega, they just do not advertise it due to keeping with the name. Hodinkee tested against a magnet up to around 5k gauss and both watches had no problems. Rolex could withstand one milgauss on the original model, the new much more.

I’d go a step further and say that any modern watch with a silicone hairspring has more than sufficient magnetic resistance for just about anyone who isn’t hanging out around MRI machines all day. And hell, even if my watches become magnetized, my watchmaker is happy to demagnetize them for free.

I liked the black dial better, so that's what I have. But if I ever decide I can own TWO Milgauss examples, I'll definitely pick up a Z-blue. They are beautiful.
Milgauss is just a name. Rolex does not publish its magnetic gauss resistance, and the assumption that it’s only 1000 is in fact false. Many suspect it to exceed Omega’s resistance.
The owner's manual for my 116400GV says "The Rolex Milgauss was designed to meet the demands of the scientific community, and is capable of withstanding magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss."
Now, back in the 50's there was the original Milgauss Ref. 6541, now that was a stunner! Good article by Haute Time on it. Not sure about this iteration, it's just a little too... out there, such a departure from what it was. Time & Tide have an article as well about Monochrome's Rolex predictions... And that one included a mock-up of what could be a proper nod to the early Milgauss if released present day. I'm of the opinion they should definitely do that! I'm not too big of a fan of any other Rolex watches, but that one... now: wow!
Everyone: How much is 1000 Gauss? Engineer: You can put it on one of the magnet you have on your fridge and it still ticks. As long as it‘s not one of those super-strong ones. Then you need an Omega or Zenith. And a demagnetizer.

@Kit Johnson I own a Daytona, Pre ceramic no date sub and a datejust. I also own an Omega Planet Ocean, which has a coaxial movement far superior to the milgauss in terms of magnetism. Since I work in laboratories with machines emiting high levels of magnetism, the Milgauss is simply not enough, its enough to resist a fridge magnet but not much more. Thats why I wear my Omega to work. But keep crying, you bought the worst steel watch rolex have made in the last 20 years

Just received the call from the big smoke big dept store... I think it looks a really interesting watch with catch me at a certain angle green crystal luminescence that beams out to the owner or viewer as far as I'm aware ?..... truly unique.
The Milgauss is frickin' great! The OG Milgauss (ref. 6543) is in my top 3 Rolex ref's of all time and the current black dial/green crystal variant (ref 116400GV) is ᴜ̈ʙᴇʀ cool. Given the choice between a Subby and the Milgauss? I'd go the latter in a ʜᴇᴀʀᴛ ʙᴇᴀᴛ. Granted, I'd prefer more brushed surfaces, but it works. I'm a tall guy with an 8“ wrist and it wears surprisingly well on me. Much more subdued than I expected. In fact, I feared the amount of polish and the colour play on the dial would make it wear like a bit of a flex. But compared to a ceramic Daytona or even a ceramic Pepsi GMT, this guy's a demur wallflower! It's a very cool watch.
Love for a watch grows with the time it spends on your wrist. Steel sports Rolex are hard to acquire and really expensive. Probably this gives the Milgauss an opportunity to be owned and loved and definitely gets my vote. The quirky look is a bonus. I could not buy a sub or a GMT so I took an Omega SMP Diver 300. Looking back no regrets. Saved money and got a super watch with amazing features for everyday use. Not in the Rolex line anymore :)
I got one with the black dial in 2010 and still love it. Thanks for this review - I think for the engineers who actually buy this thing, the quirkiness and the Faraday cage is by far the biggest attraction

I’ve always liked the Milgauss white dial and viewed many UA-cam reviews/monitored the pre-owned market looking for the right example to add to my collection. I’ve just purchased a 2008 unworn, stickered, box/papers+original receipt that was kept in a safe by the original purchaser - an absolute beauty for🇬🇧£8,200🤩
The z-blue one really pops with the green tint! I actually really like it . But I think I might like it more if it had more brushed and less polished but idk.
I've always enjoyed the Milgauss. Its unique and has more personality than something like an Explorer. I personally think its a little too out there to be my only Rolex, but for collectors I think its a must have

Love the research and background on the model, well summarized! The Milgauss is not for me, but I've seen it in person and I think it peaks much more interest on first glance compared to the "usual" Rolex models. I appreciate that the black dial version is so colorful!
First rolex I bought in 2016. I love it. I was attracted back then when I saw it on magazine and on AD displayed window. I bought the black one like showing on video. It looks very beautiful under sunlight and the green glass is amazing 😉 and I will keep it and pass to my son, generation to generation 😊
I am a student of 21 and since i saw the milgauss this has became a priority for me in Rolex. Or you can say a grail which will be very much easy to get.
I am a woman with the same size wrist as you, and I have worn my Milgauss with the white dial and orange "Harry Potter" lightning bolt as my daily driver for seven years now. It is that second hand that does it for me every "time", makes me happy, makes me think of my kids, of being a kid, of magic. It looked good back in the good old days when I would get dressed up for a wedding or gala and have it be the only thing on my left arm, and looks amazing with my new sweatsuit uniform of the past year.
Not a Rolex fan, but I do appreciate the Milgauss-esp. the black dial. Omega all day for me for 15,000 gauss resistance making its way through the product line. Enjoyable video, as always, Jenni! Thanks for the work you put into it. 🙏

Love my Zblue, And it’s the first watch of mine my wife loves which really surprised me. I can appreciate it’s a marmite watch mainly I think down to the green crystal. But the blue dial is mesmerising, but a nightmare to take a photo of 😊
What I do honestly like from the Milgauss (at least the Z-Blue with the green cristal) is that it’s almost impossible to fake and get the right green tinted sapphire… submariners, Daytona’s and GMT Master’s are been faked (in a fantastic way) but not this babe … thinking to get it ASAP
It's always been my second favorite. Explorer I which I wear every day being my number one but I would have liked to have the foresight to buy a Millguas before they started to go up. I have always wanted one.
The Milgauss especially the black dial with green crystal is the coolest Rolex model and fortunately it's not blingy enough for the typical Rolex guy which has made it more available to the real watch enthusists.
Love both colors, the white one is sweet, but like the greenish black one, I don't understand the former dislike. I happen to like the Explorer's and Milgauss watches the best from Rolex, and it isn't a money issue, I just like them, maybe because they're different. The lightening bolt second hand is great, adds some fun to the watch without going over the top.
I have the Z Blue. Of all my Rolexes, it gets the most attention and comments. Have not had a single negative comment on it. Personally, I love the orange lightning second hand and the way the dial catches the light. You can never know for certain if it is blue or green. I absolutely love it.

I actually like the modern versions of the Milgauss and I in fact own a discontinued white dial model. It's so "un-Rolex" ~ quirky and with risky design that surely attracts some of us while turning off many. Cheers!
Super case, sunburst Z-Blue dial, and green sapphire crystal make this a really fun watch to wear and gaze into. It definitely has bling because of the polished case and center links which I really like. A $9,000 watch should have some bling. The Super case is $$! The white gold hour markers, bezel, and white gold Rolex coronet are awesome. I love the coronet at 12 o'clock, it's the crown on top of the amazing dial!

Naturally it was discontinued.
I like the old Ref. 1019 a real tool watch without bling bling (polished lugs/center links). That's why I think the Air-King is much more beautiful.

I believe that among the entire Rolex lineup, there are only two models that show that the company is still able to innovate and take risks; the Milgauss and the Skydweller. Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad to encourage such adventurous undertakings when done right.

I've had the black/green Milgauss for 8 years now and love lots of things about it, I love the design and colours and it does make me smile every time I look at it. The only thing that has made me tempted to sell in recent years is the abundance of polished surfaces, especially the centre link on the bracelet. You can wear all day every day for sure but be ready to pick up lots of scratches. I had it serviced recently and it looks pristine which makes me want to wear it all the time less in a way. Just need to get some marks back then all will be ok :)
Dont know if anyone does but I call my black gv the Boba Fett. Just love the quirky colour scheme

Great vid Jenni and very informative, I am one of those people who is a fan of the Milgauss. I began with 116400 black dial back in 2011 , then had the inch for green glass so got GV black dial in 2017 and now very recently the Z Blue from my AD , 10 years of experiencing this model and I am mesmerised by the Z Blue , its beautiful and a keeper for the collection.
I only recently got really into watches, so this was the first time I've seen this watch, and I gotta say, for some reason I love it! The white dial version with the orange lightning bolt just totally catches me. I totally could see it on a crazy scientist from some 80s movie a la Doc Brown. But even though I really like the style, I personally still wouldn't spend 10 grand on it.

Can't get it in Germany from an AD yet. Not Munich, not Regensburg. At one AD there are two in the display window. Still no way. I was saving money for years to get it and there is no way to buy it for retail. The "hate" is not real. It's still as hard to get as all the other steel sport Rolex watches.
My favourite is the light blue milgauss, the way it shines in the dark 👌🏼

I love this watch for the design choices that when taken separately are weird, e.g., green sapphire crystal, lightning bolt seconds hand, and multicolor indices. I also like that it's built like a tank. Take all these details together and you have a design that is a leap of faith and Rolex goodness. Who says the Crown only makes boring watches? I'm crazy about the blue dial version but just on a matter of principal I refuse to pay over retail.
The Milgauss is a beautiful watch. Plus, it's a minimalist watch (not even a date complication) that doesn't look like one. Rolex's are out of my budget range currently (Orients are my speed), but I do wear a fairly faithful-looking Milgauss homage from time to time hoping I'll win the lottery one day and maybe get the real thing.
The Omega still has better magnetic protection at 15,000 Gauss.

Milgauss matches omega, they just do not advertise it due to keeping with the name. Hodinkee tested against a magnet up to around 5k gauss and both watches had no problems. Rolex could withstand one milgauss on the original model, the new much more.
Then buy Omega, no one gives a shit!

I’d go a step further and say that any modern watch with a silicone hairspring has more than sufficient magnetic resistance for just about anyone who isn’t hanging out around MRI machines all day. And hell, even if my watches become magnetized, my watchmaker is happy to demagnetize them for free.
Still my favourite Rolex with that green sapphire and brings a smile everyday. back in 2007-8, the GV had a long wait times

I liked the black dial better, so that's what I have. But if I ever decide I can own TWO Milgauss examples, I'll definitely pick up a Z-blue. They are beautiful.
The Rolex Milgauss (Z Blue) is one of the most beautiful and unique Rolex there is. I love it.
Milgauss is just a name. Rolex does not publish its magnetic gauss resistance, and the assumption that it’s only 1000 is in fact false. Many suspect it to exceed Omega’s resistance.
The owner's manual for my 116400GV says "The Rolex Milgauss was designed to meet the demands of the scientific community, and is capable of withstanding magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss."
Now, back in the 50's there was the original Milgauss Ref. 6541, now that was a stunner! Good article by Haute Time on it.
Not sure about this iteration, it's just a little too... out there, such a departure from what it was.
Time & Tide have an article as well about Monochrome's Rolex predictions... And that one included a mock-up of what could be a proper nod to the early Milgauss if released present day. I'm of the opinion they should definitely do that! I'm not too big of a fan of any other Rolex watches, but that one... now: wow!

Engineer: You can put it on one of the magnet you have on your fridge and it still ticks. As long as it‘s not one of those super-strong ones. Then you need an Omega or Zenith. And a demagnetizer.

@Kit Johnson I own a Daytona, Pre ceramic no date sub and a datejust. I also own an Omega Planet Ocean, which has a coaxial movement far superior to the milgauss in terms of magnetism. Since I work in laboratories with machines emiting high levels of magnetism, the Milgauss is simply not enough, its enough to resist a fridge magnet but not much more. Thats why I wear my Omega to work. But keep crying, you bought the worst steel watch rolex have made in the last 20 years

And I dont know about you, but I'm sensible enough to get my watches serviced on time. Fact remains that Omega's movement is more anti-magnetic than your anti-magnetic purpose watch.
Just received the call from the big smoke big dept store... I think it looks a really interesting watch with catch me at a certain angle green crystal luminescence that beams out to the owner or viewer as far as I'm aware ?..... truly unique.

The OG Milgauss (ref. 6543) is in my top 3 Rolex ref's of all time and the current black dial/green crystal variant (ref 116400GV) is ᴜ̈ʙᴇʀ cool.
Given the choice between a Subby and the Milgauss? I'd go the latter in a ʜᴇᴀʀᴛ ʙᴇᴀᴛ. Granted, I'd prefer more brushed surfaces, but it works. I'm a tall guy with an 8“ wrist and it wears surprisingly well on me. Much more subdued than I expected. In fact, I feared the amount of polish and the colour play on the dial would make it wear like a bit of a flex. But compared to a ceramic Daytona or even a ceramic Pepsi GMT, this guy's a demur wallflower!
It's a very cool watch.
That seconds hand is probably my favorite of all time, it reminds me of Zeus and Greek mythology as a whole.
Love for a watch grows with the time it spends on your wrist. Steel sports Rolex are hard to acquire and really expensive. Probably this gives the Milgauss an opportunity to be owned and loved and definitely gets my vote. The quirky look is a bonus.
I could not buy a sub or a GMT so I took an Omega SMP Diver 300. Looking back no regrets. Saved money and got a super watch with amazing features for everyday use.
Not in the Rolex line anymore :)
I got one with the black dial in 2010 and still love it. Thanks for this review - I think for the engineers who actually buy this thing, the quirkiness and the Faraday cage is by far the biggest attraction

I’ve always liked the Milgauss white dial and viewed many UA-cam reviews/monitored the pre-owned market looking for the right example to add to my collection. I’ve just purchased a 2008 unworn, stickered, box/papers+original receipt that was kept in a safe by the original purchaser - an absolute beauty for🇬🇧£8,200🤩
The z-blue one really pops with the green tint! I actually really like it . But I think I might like it more if it had more brushed and less polished but idk.

Do I want one? Yes. I love the Blue dial one. I'll be working around high magnetism, so maybe in the future.

I've always enjoyed the Milgauss. Its unique and has more personality than something like an Explorer. I personally think its a little too out there to be my only Rolex, but for collectors I think its a must have

Love the research and background on the model, well summarized! The Milgauss is not for me, but I've seen it in person and I think it peaks much more interest on first glance compared to the "usual" Rolex models. I appreciate that the black dial version is so colorful!
First rolex I bought in 2016. I love it. I was attracted back then when I saw it on magazine and on AD displayed window. I bought the black one like showing on video. It looks very beautiful under sunlight and the green glass is amazing 😉 and I will keep it and pass to my son, generation to generation 😊

I am a woman with the same size wrist as you, and I have worn my Milgauss with the white dial and orange "Harry Potter" lightning bolt as my daily driver for seven years now. It is that second hand that does it for me every "time", makes me happy, makes me think of my kids, of being a kid, of magic. It looked good back in the good old days when I would get dressed up for a wedding or gala and have it be the only thing on my left arm, and looks amazing with my new sweatsuit uniform of the past year.
Z-blue milguass is my grail. Only Rolex I truly love. It’s different and just cool looking.

Love my Zblue, And it’s the first watch of mine my wife loves which really surprised me.
I can appreciate it’s a marmite watch mainly I think down to the green crystal.
But the blue dial is mesmerising, but a nightmare to take a photo of 😊
The green sapphire crystal is mesmerizing! Throw in a splash of orange and a lightening bolt.....and you’ve got a real unique time piece.
Finally got mines a week ago haven’t taken it off yet! Read some article saying that it can possibly become worth 30k in a few years!
What I do honestly like from the Milgauss (at least the Z-Blue with the green cristal) is that it’s almost impossible to fake and get the right green tinted sapphire… submariners, Daytona’s and GMT Master’s are been faked (in a fantastic way) but not this babe … thinking to get it ASAP
It's always been my second favorite. Explorer I which I wear every day being my number one but I would have liked to have the foresight to buy a Millguas before they started to go up. I have always wanted one.

The Milgauss is one of a few Rolex that appeals to me from the design standpoint (in fact, I'm using a photo of one for my Windows desktop).
The Milgauss especially the black dial with green crystal is the coolest Rolex model and fortunately it's not blingy enough for the typical Rolex guy which has made it more available to the real watch enthusists.

Love both colors, the white one is sweet, but like the greenish black one, I don't understand the former dislike. I happen to like the Explorer's and Milgauss watches the best from Rolex, and it isn't a money issue, I just like them, maybe because they're different. The lightening bolt second hand is great, adds some fun to the watch without going over the top.
My favorite Rolex, and the one my wife gave me for our 20th anniversary.

I have the Z Blue. Of all my Rolexes, it gets the most attention and comments. Have not had a single negative comment on it. Personally, I love the orange lightning second hand and the way the dial catches the light. You can never know for certain if it is blue or green. I absolutely love it.

I actually like the modern versions of the Milgauss and I in fact own a discontinued white dial model. It's so "un-Rolex" ~ quirky and with risky design that surely attracts some of us while turning off many. Cheers!

Super case, sunburst Z-Blue dial, and green sapphire crystal make this a really fun watch to wear and gaze into. It definitely has bling because of the polished case and center links which I really like. A $9,000 watch should have some bling. The Super case is $$! The white gold hour markers, bezel, and white gold Rolex coronet are awesome. I love the coronet at 12 o'clock, it's the crown on top of the amazing dial!
