Wild and Tough: Jim Walmsley's Hardrock 100 Solo Attempt
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 вер 2020
- Jim Walmsley has trained in the mountains in and around Silverton, Colorado for the last five years. He has fallen in love with the San Juan Mountains and looks forward to his summer pilgrimage. After the global pandemic forced us all to reset our expectations for 2020, Jim was curious about giving the Hardrock 100 course a true effort.
With only a few friends and family members to support him, he set off by himself in the mountains with a goal of returning to Silverton as fast as possible. With audacious dreams come extraordinary results and this effort stayed true to that. Jim's style has set him apart from the running world for the last few years and this attempt was no different.

When I first came across Jim I thought he was arrogant and way too full of himself. But the more I see, the more I realise the guy deserves enormous respect. What he has is self belief in spades, and a serious and honest attitude to himself and his running, always making sure he's pushing it to his limits. He really is one of the best ever.
pretty much had Kilian's splits accidentally memorized - never change Jim 😂
Who's been waiting for this since the run steep get high vid?
Jim's attitude is great and he's an inspiration to me and so many others! Keep attempting those big goal runs!
Good to see an account of the days that go wrong for elite runners; makes it easier for us amateur runners to accept our own bad days as being an occassional part of the experience. Hope Jim does try another solo in the future...along with his team.
A "failure" for Jim Walmsley is the achievement of a lifetime for anyone else. That guy is so incredible it blows my mind. It's nice to see that he really is human, but I'll continue looking up to him like a God. Rock on, Jim!!
Makes Kilian’s feats that much more impressive
I think this right here is why Jim Walmsley is the best today and has had all the successes he has. He is not afraid to fail. We learn 100X more from our failures than our successes. They say success is going from failure to failure with no loss of passion. Jim personifies that:) Not that this is a "failure" per say (by anyone else's standards) but you know what I mean:)
Agreed! 👍
“Thanks for doing what you do and bringing us all together.”
I sincerely hope Jim Walmsley knows that there are more people behind him, hoping he hits his goals, however he approaches them, then there are naysayers. If 'go big and go hard' is what makes sense to Jim, more power to him! As he says, each outing he is gaining knowledge to fuel the next attempt. And if he nailed it each time, first time, what would be the interest for him? Me, I'm looking forward to watching whatever he decides to shoot for next and for when he comes back to the Hardrock course :-)
I love Jim's attitude that he's going to try to reach his goals even if he encounter failure along the way. He's trying even if he never succeeds. I think that's an awesome way to live life. I think the video was well put together too.
Hoka needs a decent vest so these guys can stop taping up their Salomons.
@@Zzzzzzzzzzzzjjjj The hat is actually hoka, though.
@@Simco_ He's talking about the mesh Patagonia hat
@@Zzzzzzzzzzzzjjjj They did a run of Nathan vests (7L I think) that were blue/yellow with Hoka logos as like a cross-brand collaboration. Also did the vapor waistband as well.
At least they’re not blacked-out Vaporflys? 🤷♂️😂
I thought it was a prototype unreleased Hoka vest
I was lucky to have a few minutes with Jim at a race expo in Boston a couple years back. Very inspiring, yet laid back. You can feel his determination and positive energy.

Wicked! You'll get it eventually Jim! Great film work!
Thanks for this honest film. Wish you the best for the next time. Really inspiring
Jim runs ultras like he does the mile. Same gait, same stride, same energy. Incredible and beautiful to watch. Kilian's splits were "accidentally memorized." LOL. Good on ya, Jim!
Watching while climbing hills on the treadmill during yet another Covid lockdown here in Southeast Asia. Thanks for the inspiration and beauty to enjoy.
Finally it's Here!
Very inspirational! Makes me very excited for my first ultra. Plus I Love how he is drinking Pliny the Elder from my home town!😎 🍻
Jim, you're a stud by anyone's standards. Kudos on a great attempt. I love following you on these adventures, and you're always a great inspiration. Cheers, bud.
Go Jim!
damn what an epic vid. I had heard about this on JamJam's channel but glad ya'll were able to put together this feature. Hours in a pit toilet... *shiver*. btw, #voteSenseman2020
great effort
Let’s Go Jim!
Way to push it to the limit and transcend Jim! We all know this is part of the bigger process. Thanks for the vid
Yes! Jim, you nailed it on the head: it's the night time training runs. Once you nail those, all these races will be totally different!
Respect 💪🏼
Good game, Jim!
Awesome video, headed out for a run now!
Come real race day, Jim’s gonna nail it!
Sometimes it would be too boring to succeed in the first attempt! We are cheering virtually for you on the next one :-)
Finally!
If you reach all your goals on the first attempt, you set too low goals. Way to go Jim!
Still a badass. Always rooting for you Jim.
happy to finally meet jess in a video!
Very inspiring film! As a road runner and marathoner I learned a lot from this. I also enjoy sharing advice, interviews and reviews for runners on my channel! Keep posting - you have my support!
Met Jim in 2019 in Ouray on top of Bridge of Heaven peak. Such a genuine guy what you see here is how he is. Great guy!
I've been eagerly awaiting this video since the attempt and watching the training/attempt on Strava. Good stuff, as always! I think the whole team of Cowboys is amazing and deserves a hearty round of applause.
❤️🔄👏
he "accidentally" memorized all of Killian's splits. ;)
Fail to prepare, prepare to fail
ha aha ha
@RunFor OurLivesIt wasnt a mistake, it was thoroughness
Jim is inspirational for me
Shout out to JLu, getting recognition as one of the ultrarunning legends. 💪🏽
Jim you continue to be a monster, wish I coulda been in Silverton for this.
Possibly the greatest athlete of this generation, I am constantly amazed by this dude!
So inspirational
Walmsley ,What’s he do he sets goal big or small he hits them head on and win or lose it’s going to be just fine I like that the most about this guy is “very chill” it’s a goal and a deal but at the end of the day it’s perfect just the way the day is
Watching this while running up and down my house stairs. (SAHM here. Gotta do what you gotta do.) That last sentence... Well worth it for that. If I every get the privilege of running that route I'd like to think the same for myself. What an inspiration this was to watch.
You'll get it Jim x
Atta baby. You’ll get it.
Can’t wait for Jim to push the limit around Mont Blanc and to find the balance between speed and skill.
Typical Jim’s way of running, go all out hard at the start, then either DNF or get good result.
Pro strats right here
All or nothing!
RunFor OurLives How many 100 mile ultramarathons have you ran just curious
Nice work dood
I can relate to this video more than any other about Jim - I, too, have spent four hours in a trail bathroom (Crohn's Disease).
Many see DNF as a failure but that is simplistic, lizard brain, thinking. Jim is a “dreamer” and runs with a bravery worthy of admiration. Unfortunately, some mistake his bravery for arrogance, but that is once again simplistic thinking. Don’t let the negative voices dissuade you, your dreaming is infectious and motivates many, myself included. Enjoy the journey!
Jim is the running version of Will Ferrell’s dad in Talladega nights!
“If you ain’t first...you’re last”
JIM AND KILLIAN are just AMAZING.. And HARDROCK is the best race EVER ...NOTHING Compares to THIS ... (HOPING he tries this again !!!!!) GREAT GREAT GREAT film...
Pliny the Elder!
"I got the sits" lol We've all been there!
I just had to give kudos on the Pliny!
Two things: “lollygag”... I love that he used that word;
Pliny the Elder....classy end.
I thought I saw that beer. Its supposed to be the best in the world but super hard to find. I have never had it.
i hope jim knows that the same way he looks at Killian, Scott, etc is they many people like me look at him. hats off to an amazing performance and i cant help but wish to have my bottles refilled by jim working a hardrock aid station one year!
Hell ya, excellent effort, just like with Western chip away at it and then capture it!
Next time you will do it!
You can do it.
MANTEP!
"Conquer the moutains"
What a nineteen century view on our environment !
Dale is a good human but I also disagree with that common sentiment. We can never conquer the mountains, they will be there long after we are gone, but we can strive to commune with the mountains and on the best days feel at one with them.
Ok I confess ,I have started enjoying running ,52 yrs did 12 miles ,1 hour 53 ,running was a chore ,but 2/3 yrs later after continuous training,I actually want to do it ,aiming for under 4 hours Edinburgh marathon when 60 yrs ,it’s not aimless I want to be 60 and alive ,just live listening to music when running ,I always chest pump
