How to make a gearbox in LEGO technic (5 Speed+Reverse)

- The first time I made a LEGO technic gearbox, I could not figure out how it worked. So I decided to create this step by step guide to a simple straight forward 5 speed (+ reverse) transmission for LEGO cars so I can share with everybody what I have learned so far, and perhaps I can learn something myself.
Instructions available here: rebrickable.co...
Note: obviously this design is mostly for illustration purposes: power conservation is not optimized (fair amount of gears), the reverse gear is too fast, not the most compact, etc.

Wow. Finally there is a streamlined gearbox that is actually usable
Thanks for watching!
finaly, a real 5 speed manuel, great work, keep it up!
Thanks!
Very interesting to see the entire build process, great work
Thanks for watching and the kind words!
Thank goodness for the magic hands
Its really cool and all but the gears are not in order and im trying to figure out how to make it shift in the correct order
Very cool mechanism
Thank you!
it's little but is really fiction good job!
Cool. Everyone learned something! 😀
actually this is pretty impressive
This is Brilliant ! Many thanks for sharing !😄👍
Thanks for watching!
I have realized it but the grid is not normal.

It is normal ??
Ok I reply to myself after check the full video, it is normal. But It's not like that on a manual car ....
thanks
Great video! How do you only have 1k subs?
Thank you so much for the sentiment!
Very hard to realize a gearbox by myself. Lot of problem. I try yours!
thanks for watching!
Спасибо брат!👍🏿
Спасибо за просмотр, брат!
Actually a good gear box for once
Would this work for a 1 cyl lego vaccum engine? I have a 1 cylinder lve powered truck project and it would be awesome to put this in it! And If it won't work with an lve how could I make it work?
It is a reduction gearbox, so at least at first gear, it should multiply torque quite a bit. If that's still not enough torque, I'd consider replacing the 12T-20T pairs of gears with 8T-24T pairs, which will further multiply torque (at the expense of speed)
@@1plaintext so it should work as showed and speed should increase as the gears increase?
@@stupidshetproductions yes, speed increases as you shift to higher gears, or, stalls, if the torque output does not meet your output requirement
@@1plaintext sounds good!
Wow!
You are amazing
Thanks! and btw, my mother says she agrees :)
is there any way to convert the gearbox to have a traditional pattern like a manual in a car?
... maybe in a future video?
@@1plaintext ok cool!
Do you have a parts list
instruction is available at rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-111628/1plaintext/5-speed-reverse-gearbox/ if you open the .ldr with bricklink studio, it should be able to generate a part list, thanks for watching!
Is it possible to have input and output axle in the same axis? just curious to know.
This is mostly for illustration purpose, a minimally viable unit. Change the output (yellow) connector to a 16-tooth gear and add another 16-tooth gear (driven by it) above it and that will make it concentric, but will increase length by 1L.
@@1plaintext Thanks a lot. I understood your suggestion, I am trying to make a crab steering for my monster truck project. Currently it has only steer front and rear in different directions.
But i want them to steer in same direction(Crab steer) So thought of this gear box integration.
What motor is that ?
It is a LEGO "Power Function" M motor (M for medium), I believe LEGO has retried all "Power Function" elements but the new "Power Up" motors are compatible.
i hated having to take my thiing apart to adgust your "magical Hands work"
In the interest of time, magically for us all, we have one (ldr file) baked to perfection already, stowed away at rebrickable rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-111628/1plaintext/5-speed-reverse-gearbox
I eventually got it tho
