Let's give an applause to the amazing camera works 👏
Sensational. I can't believe this is for free.
After years of listening to this symphony, perhaps the greatest of the second half of the nineteenth century , I had never admired such a perfect interpretation! This very young and distinguished conductor possesses enormous talent. An exemplary style and mimic participation. The first movement of this masterpiece by "my Brahms" was performed with rigorous respect for its beauty and richness of abstraction , which where optimized down ti the most arduous nuances and need for pauses by Makela. (R. Di Palma Italian writer and musical critic).
Klaus conducts the Symphony in a confident way. I look forward to his mature performance a decade later.
This is already a totally mature performance by this exceptional group of musicians. Klaus is the enabler or facilitator of the memorable performance.😊

...es fehlen die Worte...himmlisch...
This recording is exceptionally good. Mäkelä is such a bright conductor, really at the service of the music,, the Oslo Philharmonic has really a nice sound, passionate but precise for all the instruments. The sound is so well layered, but at the same time the parts are so clear, and that is also thanks to the acoustics of this place and the careful and intelligent microphone recording.
The quality of production is out of this world!
Maravilhosa orquestra. Entra na alma....
Happy Birthday Klaus Makela 🇫🇮!
Thank you because you recreated one of the greatest symphonies ever written. And thank you Herr Brahms. Through this music you will live forever and that it as it should be,
What a combination - Brahms and the Oslo Philharmonic led by the fantastic Klaus Makela! A dream!
Makela is the conductor every musician wants: one that doesn't dictate every beat and entrance and allows the musicians to MAKE the music. His and the orchestra's phrasing are spectacular and there is no question to what line the listener should be paying the most attention. For the haters that say he's too inexperienced and too young, get out of his way because he will be one of the greatest conductors of our time (and already is.)
I'm so happy to hear such a beautiful music lying on my bed
Cool! Did you fell asleep fast or you managed to endure awake till the recapitulation of Movement 1?
The last movement is on my top 5 list of favorite pieces of music. Brahms was such a genius. The beauty in his music is unsurpassed.
"peaces" of music?
Which are your other 4? :)
Bach #150 & influences
Woodwinds and brass are superb.
My bookshelf speakers sound like floorstandings! Well done, LAWO!
The Muses granted Johannes Brahms the opportunity to leave Heaven, take a day off, and visit Oslo. This is what happened, as documented in this video. Brahms and the Muses are most pleased, keeping open Heaven's doors so that all in heaven can listen in to this divine performance.
The conductor and orchestra sound fantastic - and certainly are - but my hats off to the sound engineers. I think we all tend to forget them, but they really can "make or break". Here the sound recording is fantastic. (The conductor and orchestra are brilliant, but could so easily have been "broken" by a second rate recording team.) So often the sound crew is ignored, but here they clearly deserve being singled out ... Bravo!
I love watching these musicians feel the music they play with their movements, and I am smitten with Klaus' energy every time he leads. Every time.
smitten is the word. the rest is...
Agony, immortality, sorrow, human philosophy, yearning for GOD, those are the expected in Brahm's 4. More abundant harmony and communications between instruments based on more open and dispersed harmonies. Years later, I do expect Makela will be shoulder to shoulder with GREAT MAESTROES.
i second
Brahms didn't believe in God, he was agnostic.
@@charlessiewerdt2832 We don't know for certain. He was a private man and raised as a Protestant. Whatever the case, the original poster of this comment could have been describing the sentiments conveyed by the music which could very reasonably include a sense of yearning for the Creator all the while lacking relationship to him. "You have made us for yourself O Lord and our hearts are restless until they rest in you" (Augustine, Confessions).
I think that Klaus Mäkelä simply enjoys making great music together. He is not just directing the orchestra. He becomes one of the instruments, creating a true bond with everybody.
Super conductor!!!!he is the best. I am shocked. so young too...
Just wonder how magnificent Mr. Johann will compliment this spectacular creation.
Thank you Klaus and thank you Great Orchestra.❤
His conducting is strangely impressive. Like his choice of costume...and the knowing smiles, eyes. His body swaying in the wind like a reed, more smiles, eyes...an Actor, an Interpreter of Suave Force and a Public to his own Orchestra. All the while...dressed like a Waiter. That's what i see and hear. A Paradox. His treatment of this Majestic Work is ample proof of his command of the Atmosphere on the staff. He may be, only 25 but his uncanny habit of downplaying his baton's movements and his own body's... to the point of near-immobilism is good enough for me and my full attention. This young man is next on the Stellar Front of Conductors. He breathes command even when he doesn't do anything but move as little as possible. In other words...he is integral part of the Orchestra and the Work. Not on a Demonstration trip like so many others who...want to give a clear Impression of Command. This guy is as much on the receiving end, as he is on the conducting. Very original and very sensitive. Often...he stands there LISTENING. Astonishing. Wanted to be a Conductor at 12. Mäkelä is a paradoxical Conductor for sure. Well done. You've won me over. What's next ?
Claude Rochon's comment - I have no objections except to one word. It is the word "rather" in the first line. I'd delete "rather" and it would read "His conducting is impressive." There, that's better!

Mr. Makela it's indeed a brilliant reality he's no longer a young generation musician with great future. As a Director he show us a deeply maturity in his management specially in the exquisite dialogue in between the strings and the oboes at the end of the first movement. This is music at it's essence, the orchestra have such a great communication with him, seems like reading his commands in advance. Fantastic ensemble and gorgeous results.
Mäkelä Is just terrible.
Without a doubt the loveliest performance of this piece I have heard and will ever hear.
A feast for the ears eyes and heart.
Thanks, Oslo Philharmonic!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Greetings from Finland...
Happy Midsummer ▫️ Hyvää Juhannusta ❕
Thanks, Philharmonic!
The future of classical gets even brighter with every Movement of Klaus Mäkelä’s hand. All the subtle movements, and expressions he makes has me under the impression he commands but also enjoys being on the receiving end just as much. I always end up with a rollercoaster of emotions whilst listening to the pieces performed by Oslo Philharmonic with Klaus. These talented musicians that pour their time, emotions, and love for music are always such a bliss to listen to even to someone who doesn’t play an instrument like me.
I’d love to see them in concert someday
This wonderful performance reiterates the point of how each conductor’s interpretation of a work reveals nuances not heard in that of others. After listening to a half dozen other conductors treat this piece, for the first time I can actually hear the part of the strings under the oboes towards the end of the first movement at 25:30. What a revelation!! Therein lies the beauty and glory of classical music. It would require many lifetimes to fully appreciate it all, and even that would not be long enough. Thank you Oslo Philharmonic for this joyous musical gift!
This is one of my very favorite symphonies ever! And Klaus Makela is my favorite conductor! And Oslo Philharmonic is my favorite orchestra! Therefore, it's perfect in every way... 🥰
I have listened to this symphony many times - I have always loved it ... but here, there is clarity as if every single instrument can be distinguished - I am thrilled ...
One of Brahms' brilliant pieces. I really like this composer!
First 2 min. Like all first encounters
So beautiful Symphony ! Thank -you so much Oslo Philharmonic !
This is a wonderful piece by Brahms.
And thank you for the wonderful performance.
I enjoy it so so much!!!!!
You are musician?
@@filliiiii7 just a music lover. I can not even read scores.
How can anyone be so blessed with youth, a beautiful face, a joyous disposition, fantastic skill and spectacular talent?
Who are you referring to? 😊
Love all your videos. Thank you Oslo Philharmonic for the gifts, best wishes from México.
The light and the vastness of nature, the colors in the light of a late summer sunny early afternoon, and the intimate closeness to nature and everything that lives, yes, living and being alive, all this and much more that Brahms expresses in his music is brought to full expression by the fantastic musicians of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under the inspiration of an absolutely unique conductor like Klaus Mäkelä. The sound engineering is the pinnacle of this musical poetry without a pair in the entire history of music.
What rapture! This is rendition is so exciting! Watching Klaus Makela conduct is almost as enjoyable as listening to this magnificent and majestic symphony. He is intense, youthful in approach, dynamic, theatrical, dramatic. The Oslo Philharmonic is right with him on every chord. You can see how much they enjoy working with him, and vice versa. The sound on this video is remarkable. The entire symphony, and particularly the Fourth Movement, literally sends me to a transcendent place. Thanks you so much for this.
Looking for Shostakovich's "Leningrad" symphony I met this conductor; I loved his version and from then on, I am a follower of his work. Without a doubt a great director and artist! Greetings from Chile!
Indeed, mine too, I met him on that Schostakowitsch's Symphony and then this Brahms' 4th Symphony, so I started to follow his works too!
A fantastic concert conducted by one of the greatest musician in the world.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏Beautiful
Klaus Mäkelä is such an excellent young conductor!
Bravo Elise Batnes!
Oh! How stunning Brahms it is. I happened to listen to on youtube. There are so many various theme, rhythm and articulation, also dynamism too. they say Brahms music is so difficult to appreciate his composition, especially how to combine every theme with a built -in changing suitable tempo which is concerned with his musical spirit and colorful thought. I would feel we might not to play through out in the same speed, because he had so many musical idea and graceful heart. Occasionally I used to listen to Yang Karajan No.4 with BPO. depend on my inclination. Anyway I would appreciate Oslo Philharmonic's calm, sound and sensibility so much.(soon be 91yrs.Japanese) sorry strange English.
Your English is perfect
Bravo Klaus Mäkelä!!

The Oslo Phil did a great by having Maestro Makela. Soon they will be in the top 5 orchestras of Europe.

Sinfonia stupenda, direzione magistrale, orchestra fantastica,ma sopratutto questo giovane maestro molto molto bravo, complimenti.
Me suomalaiset ollaan ylpeitä meidän nuorista kapellimestareistamme!
Beautiful concert. This is my favorite of the Brahms symphonies.
An essential part of the history of symphonies during the Romantic era.
This song is evaluated as a masterpiece among masterpieces.
Brahms said, “It is the most personal utterance of my soul.”
During a chaotic and uncertain period in the composer's life (1884 - 1885)
Composed by critics, the symphony described Brahms' internal struggle and conflict.
I interpreted it as a musical expression.
Best regards.

A masterly performance! It was a great pleasure to listen to. I am very impressed, thank you very much.
Thank you for sharing this performance! I've been to Oslo only once. Hope to return one day and watch your wonderful orchestra in person. Greetings from Los Angeles!
I was dying waiting for this 🖤

Ah, I'm in love, Romanticism at her beautifully sensitive moment.
Great Quality. I like a lot of Klaus interpretations and this one is interesting but imho the Carlos Klieber is still the best. Dudamels is also fantastic. Let's hear those horns!
grandiosi
Wonderful performance. Bravo!
Again, this is OK, but go back and listen to the old Karajan recording. If you're allergic to Karajan, give the Carlos Kleiber/Vienna Phil. one a shot. Those are operating on an entirely different plane. In American recordings, George Szell wasn't exactly a slouch either.
The orchestra is excellent. And comfortable with the conductor. Who is outstanding.
I just cannot get over the production quality of your videos. What a cherry on top of the treat that is the orchestra! I'm so glad I came across this channel.
Beautiful and delicate Brahms! I usually feel many conductors play this symphony no.4 too heavy and formal. I love Klaus's well-balanced conducting. Bravo! I wanna hear this performance everyday!
Takk 😍
Another wonderful performance and interpretation from my favorite conductor Klaus Mäkelä.
Lovely...effortless conducting...really know what he's doing....knows how to get out of their way....few know this....
Yes. He doesn't impose upon the orchestras music making. They have great internal ensemble playing and 100 ears are in this case better than one. Nothing beats the crack of being in a performance when the conductor let's you play. His technique is second to none. Memorable performance.
Klaus seems to be a delight to work with. You can see that the orchestra look up to him and they really follow him. @32:35 :)
😊I find it to be SO beautiful. Thank you.
The biggest conducting talent of the 21st century!

These symphonies are amazing. I'm constantly listening. :)
Klaus Mäkelä uses music as a vector of communication to give it meaning, even significance, as it is the case in this superb interpretation of Brahms' Symphony No.4. Touch by touch like a painter, he appropriates the score and creates, according to his temperament, his mood, a unique musical atmosphere. It is with his own network of sensory correspondences that he perceives an aggregate of syntheses, tensions and mental and emotional dynamics. It is my second favorite interpretation after Carlo Maria Giulini live concert with the Los Angeles. Thanks to the Oslo Phil Orch for this video !
Fabulous left arm and hand. I followed Mäkelä's performances since the early days at the workshops with Maestro Pannula; in fact, there was, even then, something different about him.
Amazing!!! I was looking forward to enjoying this orchestra playing the work of my favorite composer. Bravo!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 All are extraordinary! Thanks.
🇧🇷
Wow, so differnt rendition comparing to Karajan, Celelidache, Kleiber, very nice.. and Makela is soo young, talented and handsome... amazing
Great performance of a great composition. Very focused, outstanding intonation and timing.
