I was thinking I would have to spend a lot for a strong trellis system, but when you mentioned using branches I got excited! There's a access way between properties on the other side of my fence were people leave their tree trimmings all the time! I'm going to go out there and start collecting wood for a free trellis system! Thank you for sharing this insight!
Branches look cool too

Another great vid!! I am fortunate to be living on property with lots of growing bamboo. I cut a bunch of them a few months ago to make room for my gardens. Just this weekend I trimmed the branches off those dry, cut bamboos and used them to stake some plants. I love that I can leave little stumps off the trimmed branches. I use those small stumps to help me secure the twine. I find that my hands are not strong enough to tie twine tight enough onto flat sticks.
Also thanks for sharing your tool suggestions. I did not know those ratchet cutters and "saw saws" existed and I can really use them!! I'll be clicking on your links to purchase them.
I watch tons of gardening vids and I always get excited when I learn something new. Your vids are particularly stellar!!! Thank you for your service to humanity.

Love your channel and this video popped up at the perfect time. We are having our annual end of May snowstorm (gotta love Colorado!) and the heavy wet snow sadly did a number on our trees. It even broke the thick branches, but now I have a ton of materials. I'm thinking maybe I can pair it with some netting and use T-posts for stability, so we'll see how it works out.
Thank you for the ideas!
I think branches look great in the garden BTW.

I used some raw materials like this in the garden a few years ago. It worked great but everyone gave me crap about it. They said it was tacky. I thought it was resourceful. It's nice to see someone else doing it!

One suggestion - cut away from the hand that holds the stock, not toward it. Anyway I’ve learned tons from you this year and my tomatoes and peppers are doing great thanks to watching you back in February!
You are right. Normally I stand over and cut away. But the camera put me there on that angle and I went the lazy route. Thanks. Didn't even notice till you all pointed it out. Excellent content, as usual. I'm using your suggestions to build a trellis from bush branches. But one suggestion, especially for folks on a budget: I'd use a cheaper pruning saw (I spent under $20 for a nice folding saw) than a Sawzall (about $150). The pruning saw is convenient, easy to use, and I keep it in my pocket while pruning. The Sawzall is heavy and is a pain if the battery dies. I've used a Sawzall only once in yard work-as a chainsaw replacement for a damaged tree with an 8-10'' diameter trunk.
Thanks for the tip

Hi Gary, I try to watch every one of your videos! So informative. A problem...I have 6 trays of seedlings, mostly indeterminate tomatoes. I planted the March 16th. Under lights. Almost all germinated. The problem is that they are around 2 inches tall. Some are 3 to 3 1/2 inches. Should they be larger? Or does it take longer than 30 days to get big enough to transplant? Thanks.
What would you recommend as the best way to keep out animals?
Being a first year gardener I was very surprised and a bit frustrated on how much trellising I had to do. Even after buying Hog Panel And Several T-Stakes. I had stuff trellising along the north side of my fences but the deer found they could reach their tongue in and pull off the vines. So being at the end of my budget here is what I found. Douglas fir Bows are fantastic and free for trellis tomatoes they are 10-12 feet long. Once you pull off all the leaves they curve slightly which is nice because as the tomatoes grow they will grow up and away from the middle opening air flow. BTW Friskar Loppers work great up to 3.5 inch diameter. BAMBOO POLES....got a bunch from a junk man. Work great for beans NOT so great for peas as they cant latch on to the smooth surface. IF you want to use them on peas you have to tie them. Also old PVC pipe good for just about anything. You can also put pots at the bottom of your deck and use the rail supports as a trellis. I am growing my cherry tomatoes that way. I keep checking my junk shops for those fridge shelves I want some of them. Thanks for another great video.

Great trellises however, what do we do when we’re planting in raised garden beds and we don’t have a depth of yard to push polls and spikes down in? The raised beds sometimes are only 8 to 10 inches deep.
Typically you have to build a base.

I noticed that you had some chicken wire at the base of one bean trellis. Is that to deter rabbits? How is it that you don't have more of your garden fenced up away from birds and rabbits? I ask because we have very curious critters.
Exactly. Good eye. They eat the new sprouts if the sneak into my yard. No losses this year! I have a fence around the perimeter with bottom chicken wired. Birds only take my blueberries and raspberries and might peck a few tomatoes on hot hot days. The discount code THERUSTEDGARDEN is now working of Cates Site. So too much soluble fertilizer, the chemcial type I take it. Sound like build up? Anyway just put a gallon of water through it a few time and rinse the soil out. Sorry, bought it on amazon
Hey, I've made huge mistakes (first week gardening before looking at youtube) I've bought and started growing broccoli, melon, water melon. Carrots, pumpkin , lettuce, corn, green beans and squash. Yes it is a lot ;(
Anyways I have 1,2,3 and a 5 gallon pots and 1 3 gallon bag as well. What are your thoughts on all this stuff and what can I continue to grow in these? There is still time to transfer stuff I have only been growing since 7-7-18 please help me :)
So you have a lot going on but clearly hae seed starting down. Might be too hot for broccoli.Lettuce in 1 or 2 gallon potsGreen beans in 3 gallon pots or larger Melons, watermelon, squash and pumpkin really need like 7 gallon pots but 5 gallon and regular feeding and water can work.Carrots need depth Good luckShop on Amazon and Support The Rusted Garden for Free: Anything you purchase gives a % return back to TRG. Please DO NOT make freehand cuts as demonstrated ~6:00, ESPECIALLY NOT with your support hand in front of the blade. You can make this cut more safely if you point the tip of the stake away from you, and push the saw AWAY from your support hand. But the safest method is to properly secure the workpiece - lay it on a workbench or on some scrap timbers on the ground. Shortcuts are not worth lost fingers.
Very good point. My laziness shouldn't put others at risk. Thanks. The discount code THERUSTEDGARDEN is now working of Cates Site. Shop on Amazon and Support The Rusted Garden for Free:

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Hey, sorry I was so strong in the comment last spring. I had an accident the prior year (2020). I wasn't thinking safety and with one slip.... I still cant feel my thumb. Here's to a great 2022.
