    Gary, I have an idea for tying up any string on PVC pipe that will not slide down. You need PVC cement/glue and dry sand. Just clean the PVC pipe and apply the PVC glue 2-3" wide outside the PVC pipe every 1' or 2' and sprinkle dry sand around the pipe and let dry. Sand will stay there forever once it is completely dry.
    And thanks for all of your videos, it is very helpful.

    I visited the local scrap metal yard & managed to get several freebie fridge shelves ... the white plastic-coated wire variety. I've also commandeered a couple of 'A Frame' clothes airers which were destined for the tip ... up one side & down the other they measure about 2.1 meters, so they should be ideal for Carouby Peas.

    Gary Love the trellis. I added two lattice trellis to each side of the gate to my dreaded chain link fence, I put pole beans in pots and the garden entrance is pretty and covered with edible food by mid season. Oh and btw I'm learning to"like" my chain link fence because it provides a great horizontal / vertical space for growing. When it's covered is actually the only time I'm really okay with it. Just thought I would put this out there for those with those ugly fences!

      Oh and the two 6'x 18" trellis were roughly $20 at a big box store so another option. And they were pre- stained.

    When you get stuck like that and there's a laugh attack feedback loop between everyone, break for coffee. A ten, fifteen minute break will sort that out, and you might as well, as that time will otherwise get wasted anyway, with everyone just getting more tired and less focused.

    For really tall trellises I bolt two u-posts together. If I want it tall and strong I use two 7ft u-posts, and for shorter posts I use a 7ft u-post and bolt a 4ft post on. The skinnier 4ft post fits better in the "u" part of the base post. The posts come with pre-drilled holes and I just line up the two top holes of the bottom post with the two bottom holes of the top post and use two nuts and bolts to secure them. I put the posts in about 5-6ft apart and I use paracord between the posts for the plants to climb. The little hooks are the perfect size to hold up the paracord. Then I tie another paracord piece to the top line so it can hang down if I want a vertical line for the plant to climb, or I hang the vertical line down and wrap it around each horizontal line, which can create a grid trellis if I want that. I tried a variety of materials and found that paracord has held up the best. It's a pretty cheap and easy trellis, and the black paracord is pretty unobtrusive. In my old garden I had those trellises all around the edge of my yard in front of wooden fences, and it looked great when the plants grew up. My back yard had three nine foot walls of green with colorful flowers and fruit. It was even strong enough to grow large pumpkins on.

      Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) I’ll be ordering the starting kit because right now I’m using old egg cartons. They’re ok for now, but if I’m going to keep things in my greenhouse, if only for a month here in Houston. I’ll need something more sturdy! I’ll be looking at the cold rather crop seeds as well. I think if I start them before it gets really cold here, it’ll work out. Worth a try. I grew lettuce this spring.

    Bambooooo! I'm blessed/cursed with bamboo on a vacant lot next to me. Just keeping it at bay with a machete usually keeps me stocked, but I could walk into the stand and cut a dozen poles and it would make no noticeable difference. My neighbor on the other side of the bamboo builds some pretty elaborate structures with it. You guys are toasting me on the Beefsteak Challenge. I have better fruit, about an inch, on one of my spare plants that's hanging out in a 4" pot. I suppose technically that one hasn't been planted out yet. Maybe I should stick it in a bed.

    Awesome video Gary, Kim and Jerry!!! Too funny! I really enjoyed getting to see this side of your personalities. Lol.
    A question about mulching. I am a brand new gardener. I've finally finished transplanting my tomatoes in Walmart fabric bags as grow bags. I have a number of other bags with beans, peas, cucumber, beets and peppers (many things too many to mention). I have numerous things direct sowed in the bags other than my Tomatoes. Tomatoes only share space with Basil and marigolds. It would probably kill my seeds direct sowed if I were to mulch, right? But I intend to get the mulching done on my tomatoes tomorrow after today's rain clears out. I'm in Halifax, Nova Scotia, zone 6b. I find the rain causes a crusting effect of the top layer of the potting mix even though I'm using a really good brand, pro mix (general in some bags, organic for vegetables and herbs in tomatoes and a few of the others). I find I have to break up the top layer with my fingers after the rain. Would mulch stop that effect the rain is causing? Once my seeds I direct sowed are big enough I can mulch them too.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 років тому

      Yes. So right seeds can get trapped under mulch. And the mulch will reduce evaporation and keep the soil from crusting for sure.
      Congrats on getting started.
