MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 3 Movie Review With Dave White

  • "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" inspires one of our biggest disagreements ever here at Breakfast All Day. Christy and Dave White, filling in for his husband, Alonso, definitely did not go on the same journey in reviewing the latest movie in this wacky rom-com franchise. Nia Vardalos writes, directs and stars this time as Toula, who must travel with her husband, Ian (John Corbett), and her entire family to her late father's Greek island village to fulfill his dying wish. Madcap hilarity and Windex spraying ensue. Co-starring Andrea Martin, Elena Kampouris, Louis Mandylor, Melina Kotselou and Anthi Andreopoulou. In theaters now.

I remember being so pleasantly surprised by the first MBFGW, it remains one of my favourite rom-coms. I opted out of seeing the second one... I just figured that Nia Vardalos wouldn't be able to recreate the lightning-in-a-bottle fun and relatability of the first one.

What I hate about this film was how rushed it felt. Christy is right about the choppy editing and weird pacing issues. For me that would have been fine because it was more or less a turn off your brain, "vacation" type movie, but even turning my brain off couldn't stop me from realizing how jarring it was that practically every conflict in this film was set up and then resolved in like five minutes. For example, father doesn't approve of his son marrying a non-Greek, next scene the family talks it out and suddenly he does a complete 180. Same thing happens with the old grandmother. Nicky wants to spread his dad's ashes, Toula doesn't approve. They talk it out and the next scene is them spreading his ashes. Toula's daughter is failing college (actually that one wasn't resolved) and tells her love interest she is not interested in a relationship, they talk it out and dance at the wedding and all of a sudden they are now a couple of lovebirds. Oh yeah and I forgot there is a wedding in this one. Although unlike the previous movies it has absolutely nothing to do with the plot. They could have cut it out and you wouldn't miss anything. But I guess Nia Vardalos had to shoehorn it in to avoid calling this one "My Big Fat Greek Vacation" or something.

YES totally with you Dave! It was a charming and endearing movie. I like that you picked up how it’s about how someone can become part of your family. A village or town is a family too but those who grew up in big cities may not understand that. My husband is like Dave, comes from a very small family then marries me with the many siblings, tons of cousins and uncles with aunts. We’re also loud while my husband’s side is quiet and do puzzles which that is weird to me! So it’s not surprising that someone who keeps quiet and doesn’t go to huge family gatherings would give it a low score

I agreed with Dave also. While this movie may have had its faults, like the choppy edits mentioned and the cringy awkward brother, I just have to wonder what happened in Christy's life that has made her so miserable as to not realize the warmth of family between the characters that really makes this movie wonderful.
I hope she comes to an epiphany some day so that she won't be so miserable about the good things in life.

Definitely agree with Christy. I came to UA-cam to look for reviews of this movie, as it's probably the worst-made movie I've ever seen. I was about to give up on it 15 mins in, until I realized I was enjoying picking apart and laughing at the terrible editing, dialog, and random cuts. I think the moment was driving from the airport: "Can we visit all these famous landmarks in Athens. 'No, we have to rush for the boat! But can we go for a swim? 'Yes!' and then they all run into the ocean in their clothes"
I finished it at 2.5x speed just to get through it, and loved laughing at the cringe. I'm in Greece on holiday this week (hence picking this film to watch), and plan to show it to friends here just to laugh at all the WTF film-making flaws. If you think of it like "The Room", this is going to be a cult classic soon.

I'm not surprised by the divide in the review. What was surprising was the success of the first movie even though some cultural comments in it might not be understood if you're not Greek.
A friend of mine at the time of MBFGW told me they loved all of it but the ending because of how unrealistic the father's gift was. I had to explain to him that's not just an extravagant gift, a place to live is a traditional Greek dowry and it shows joy much the father has come to accept Ian that he decided to include this even though Ian would not expect it.

I was so thrilled at the end to hear he hated it as much as I did. Clearly I didn't watch the credits enough to know it's All Nia All The Time being responsible for so many lousy choices. At first when they're riding in the truck and we see them all looking out but need a separate shot to see what they're looking at I thought we might be in for a green screen disaster where they're only pretending to be in Greece. Christy is so right about the editing. I said I was going to come home to see if it was the first time for director/writer/editor since it was all so wrong. If it was silly, I might have liked it. Just felt so clunky. Maybe if Dave's explanation was used as the voiceover it would've worked!

So many subplots happening simultaneously, while not feeling particularly important to the story, and they each just kind of fizzle out at the end. The humor was not only unfunny in most cases, but was actually uncomfortable to watch. At times I found myself wondering if a line of dialog was even meant to be a joke.

The storylines were all over the place and with the exception of Andrea Martin, it seems like everyone else in the cast forgot how to act. Why was it necessary to give Lanie Kazan dementia? I'm sure there were a million other ways to explain why she couldn't make the trip with the family. Completely unnecessary. The scenery was the only saving grace. I don’t agree either… romantic comedy sequels are rarely done it seems, and very often… the sequels tend to go in directions with the characters that rarely have anything to do with romance (Jewel of the Nile)
It is not a comedy…. But I put Before Sunset out there for consideration as the best sequel of a romantic movie…

Alright I was not expecting that reaction from Dave White. While I won't be seeing this movie in a theater with overpriced bottles of water and hugely overpriced reheated popcorn (full disclosure both are my "legal",as in bought at the theater, snacks). However I will give it a view when it streams.

I found the CGI faces very off putting. I don't understand why half of the actors seemed to look like deep fakes to me.

So I feel Dave was kind and very open minded about this. I do not feel that Christy was being nor really perspectve about it. Perhaps its a narrow minded Anglo take on her part. Dave was more open minded and understood as it encompasses his life being married to a Spaniard and could relate. WE get it Christy, you disliked and hated the movie, that is obvious. :-)

I have reached an age where I like to watch more challenging films like Oppenheimer. Sometimes i watch foreign films that I know I might not even like. But they are a challenge! One thinks about them for a while! There is no challenge in these Fat Greek Movies! These movies are just lazy! Even a pop corn movie like Guardians of Galaxy III had a dark edge to it that I enjoyed! It made the viewer feel empathy for the raccoon!

I've never felt more bad for Christy than I did in this video. You can just feel her holding back SOOO many criticisms of this catastrophic pile of shit to try to be respectful of Dave. Nia Vardalos straight-up turned me into the teacher from "Bottoms", during his misogynist phase. I had to go see Barbie again to bring myself out of it.

The first time I made out with a guy was during the first My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I’ll never not think of that lol. It was very awkward-turns out I’m a lesbian, who knew 😂

The first one was great! but sadly like most part 2’s and 3’s and 4’s and so on they tend to go to shi$.
This film was no different, just wait for it on free prime video.
    trust me.

@@BreakfastAllDay The concept was stronger than the film. The leads lacked romantic chemistry; a must for a rom-com. I admit to having an unpopular opinion though.

Seems like the guy's reaction is a typical person's reaction to an okay rom-com.
    Cristy's was a nit-picking, prepared-to-hate-at -all-costs, review😢....we fault the photo shopped pictures...OMG!
I bet she LOOOOOVED Asteroid City and Beau Is Afraid - both pretentious, "artistic" bull-crap THAT NOBODY SAW, except the art-house crew🤷.
    Love Dave and his enthusiasm❤
