In the puzzle at 4:11, what if the opponent decides to move their queen to b4? We would still manage to achieve material advantage but wont get their queen. Would this still be a successful combination?
Hey Asad! Great question. You are correct. If Qb4, then we capture the rook and we end up winning significant material. it is not as good as the queen, but it is still good.
@@NMRobertRamirez how would we capture the rook ?? could you elaborate please because if we were to use queen then their queen would take our queen right ??
One thing I've been noticing more and more is that it generally only takes two of your pieces to deliver an actual checkmate. Knowing that makes it much easier to sacrifice any piece outside of the two that are needed. How to do that exactly varies in complexity from puzzle to puzzle. Also, when ever there are enemy pieces on my side of the board, I must pay attention to what the opponent is trying to do with those pieces first. Also, always make sure you don't have any back rank mating problems. In only takes a few seconds to check. In the example given at 9min mark, the enemy queen is very close to our king and clearly has mate in one if it were their move. So every move must be forcing for white or they will be checkmated. Notice how white has three heavy pieces in play to attack the enemy king with. At this moment, bells should be going off in your head to give the green light to a heavy piece sacrifice. The more difficult thing for me is seeing the blocking moves that the opponent has. I think it's the laziness aspect that causes us to miss this sort of thing so what Robert is saying about checking all the opponent move variations is very important. There is something psychological about not seeing or wanting to see your opponents best moves because, deep down we just want our move to work. Unfortunately, your opponent will punish you if you don't consider all the relevant responses and evaluate them all. In this case the rook block didn't matter but we have to check all the possibilities methodically and not be lazy about it. You have to be your own minister of defense.
Still really enjoying this series. Even though I am not a beginner, I feel like going through the review of my fundamentals and basic tactics will hopefully help me find things faster and maybe calculate some variations quicker or more accurately.

7:00: I'd really want to look at checks he has. In this case, Rb7 is particularly important, because it would sooner or later cause me to move my queen off the b file. My rook protects the knight on c7, which means the check won't work out for my opponent, but it's a risk to consider.
