@Adam Chlebovec I think bc of their differing off track personalities and also the stereotypes connected to their nationalities, we tend to judge the dirty aspects of Senna's and Schumacher's driving differently. It's simply easier to paint the calculated German as a villain than the eccentric Brazilian. There are plenty of similarities to how the two conducted themselves on the track, both deliberately crashed into their rivals to secure a World Championship for instance. It was common practice for both in on track battles to position their cars in a way that left the opposing driver with only two options: either give up the position, or crash. For behavior like this, Senna is hailed as a mad genius, an all-or-nothing type of driver, someone who would never back down from a fight (an interpretation undoubtedly reaffirmed by the mystique he tragically earned through an on track death). Compare that to Michael who is seen as plain dirty and a bad sportsman and winner for it. I believe if there somehow was a motorsports fan who didn't know these two guys and had no pre-existing opinion of them and you showed him tapes of their driving, he wouldn't judge Michael and Senna too differently.

Mika seems to be an underrated F1-champ. When looking at clips from the 90s from him and Michael you can't do other than have deep respect for both drivers. They were so damn charismatic compared to today's F1 drivers...
2 time worldscampion
@Finland1965 you mean benetton b194& b195?
They had 4 years in strong cars against each other and 2 times Mika and 2 times Schumacher won.
Many people forget that. Head to head, they were equally strong. You cant just say the one has more titles so he is better... They had these 4 years and it ended in a draw.
AWESOME races between these two.
Although i always was and will be the Mika fan.
Thanks to Schumacher and the (real) Schumacher fans, it was a great pleasrure
As much as I respect and love Mika. He made a lot mistakes in 1999. If Michael wasn't injured he would have surely won the championship
@@dougjudy5352 Eddie Irvine Almost won the title that year. Schumacher returned the following year to blow everyone away. MSC at his very best was the best Driver of his generation.
nope.mclaren in 1998-1999 were way faster than the ferrari.they were faster even in 2000-2001 but they luck reliability.
@@dougjudy5352 tbf that mclaren was extremely quick, but also incredibly fragile, if he didnt have like half his retirements due to mechanical problems then eddie irvine wouldnt be close at all
@BallersKingdom MSC won 9 of the 17 races. Hakinnen won 4 races, Coulthard 3 wins, and Barichello with 1 win.
The respect and admiration between the two was amazing. I loved Schumacher but the way Mika speaks about Schumi, I have nothing but respect for the man. Two amazing drivers and gave us some amazing moments in F1
There's nothing not to love about Mika. A great racer, undeniable. And a thoroughly good person. A perfect rival for "the Michael".
definitely much more things to love on him than on you........ :D
This had to be coming. Love Mika. Really honest in this video.
Schumi was very dirty with Hakkinen.
Mika Hakkinen was hard rival for 4 years (Since 1998-2001) 1998 Mika Won, Schumacher destroyed
1999 Mika won again, but Schumacher still strong in Suzuka
(Epic 1998 Monza& Epic 2000 Spa) For Schumacher. 2000 Schumacher finally got what his want also for team, and keep compete with Mika until the end
Really great battle between them!
Definitely The "GOAT" Great 4 Years! #KeepFightingMichael
In 1998-2000 it was decided on the last race, It was that close
3 years only. 1998 with the best car, 1999 almost lost the title to Irvine due to his own mistakes (MSC broked his legs as shown at 4:06 in the video). In 2000 with cars more closely matched, he lost in the penultimate race. In 2001 the McLaren wasn't that competitive and even Coulthard had a better season than Häkkinen (just like in 1997). He's a bit overrated in my opinion.
Thank you.
if he wouldnt have his break in britian 1999 he would ve won that championship also but it dosent matter it happend
He was also a rival to Michael in junior Formula.
He was the only competitor whom Micheal acknowledged being intimidated, and perhaps because Micheal could not evoke any emotional outburst out of him. Whatever Micheal thrown at him, he would reply with precision and calmness, and any little hints of advantage Mika would pounce like a tiger.
It's sad that we don't see something like this between Max and Lewis.
@@fhouse13 It's weird because we'd expect Hamilton to react calmly since he should have more racing experience and is a seven time world champion, but instead he had the same emotional outbursts as Verstappen.
@@fhouse13
Hamilton has nowhere near the level of composure as Hakkinen
Mika, always humble, always a fair racer. A true Legend.
he was not one of the greatest Rivals of Schumacher.... HE IS THE GREATEST RIVAL
Senna?
@@johnlemon2916 never got to race each other at their primes whereas Schumacher and Hakkinen did
The real beauty of it is that, when he talks about it, you can still see the competitiveness in his face and hear it in his voice. The truest tragedy is that it is unlikely these two will ever be reunited on track ever again, even for fun. They may both have been stoic drivers, not press heavy, but this was the greatest rivalry in F1 history.
1:57 great moment..two sportmen fight each other, argue and then smile together...what an era..
From my childhood, I could only remember that this was the friendly man with the funny name and the silver car that commentators would get excited about regularly. This man has a very interesting personality and he drove like a dragon.
Mika you are a living Legend. God bless you.
Only for THAT overtake in Spa 2000 deserve a place in history. Beat Schumacher and won two championships is for legends like him.
I remember watching it live, and will always remember that moment.
A momentous overtake, not only in the context of the race, but the swing in momentum in the championship.
This is the best rivalry in f1 in my opinion
The more fairplay rivalry
*Clean rivalry
Senna vs. Prost was best and hardrst rivalry ever. But not fair as Häkkinen vs. Schumacher.
Lauda vs Hunt by far
nahh, its valteri vs james
Lots of respect for Mika, the toughest rival Michael ever had, the only one to beat him in equal conditions
don’t forget alonso
@@mjb1655 Mate Alonso's renault was bulletproof at the time. Fast and reliable, something which the Ferrari's were not. The fact that Schumacher pushed Alonso in that dog of car in 2006 season is a testament to his greatness.
equal?those mclarens in 1998 were giving laps to averyone.
@@mjb1655 alonso won only because fia made changes to stop schumacher and ferrari.
@@kimiATI7750 Schumi was off his prime by then. In equal cars prime Schumacher would demolish Fernando.
As a fan of Michael I used to hate Mika (I was very young), but as I grew up I can only respect this man. You can feel in his voice that he has nothing other than respect for Michael and their rivalry, this is almost wholesome to listen to him talk about Michael
What a class act. What a fantastically wonderful gentleman. What a competitor. What a driver. Mika , you were always my favorite. "The Michael " was always pushing to a higher level.
FINALLY A REAL RIVAL HAKKINEN!!!!
"when I was racing against him, I was happy to see him in my mirrors"
Mika. The best enemy Michael ever had. Always, with respect.
They were rivals, not enemies
mika was never afraid of Schumacher, it was a blow to the German who did a lot of dirty races to win the Hakkinen, that's the truth.
@@neblinasp Umm *NO*
It wasn't a blow to Schumi, Mika was one of the very few drivers Schumi respected because Mika wasn't afected by Schumi's mind games.
And no, Schumi didn't do a single dirty race to win over Mika, in fact Schum8 had less then 5 dirty races in his entire carear
You are uneducated about F1 and it's history if you belive anything that you wrote
This was probably the best sports videos ive ever watched on youtube. thank you mika and thank you michael. we will never have that again and i am proud that i was alive when you raced each other
I will never forget the overtake of SPA 2000. I was crying behind the TV. Thank you Mika. We love you.
this was the biggest rivalry I've ever seen in my life.
Simply a duel of titans 🏎️🇫🇮🏎️🇩🇪🏆🏆🏁.
What about Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost?
A great one tooo, but not my favorite one!
"The Michael"
In a Top Gear episode, James may said to Mika “Michael Schumacher said that you were the driver he really feared.”
Statue Of Limitations and mika just laugh
Yeah and Mika just laughed with that cheeky smile :D
*only
Definitely enjoyed this one the most. Mika truly understands Michael as a person.
Mika and Schumi are my childhood F1 heroes. Absolute legends.
Schumi is my biggest idol from childhood. KeepFightingMichael
Brilliant interview! The battles with Michael and Mika are some of the greatest in F1 history :D
Hakkinen: when i was racing against him i was happy to see him in my mirors
❤️What a absolute legend ❤️
Having had the pleasure of meeting Mika in real life, I can attest that he is as genuine and kind as he is on media
Please can we have an hour long Mika episode??😩
Michael vs. Mika was one of the best fights ever. Always clean and respectful. Always on the limit.
And BTW, Mika is such a nice guy... All the best to him and to Michael, of course! #KeepFightingChamp
I became an F1 fan in my childhood thanks to them, especially Häkkinen. I was just 4 y o, but i can remember their fights as it had happened yesterday.
Since then have you been in go kart for some years or did you want to be racing driver in your childhood?
@@rollingdigger19 I really wanted to be a racing driver, but the costs were too expensive for my family.
Remember when i was young and watching f1... Always rooting for michael. Never new until today mika was such a down to earth guy. Chapeau!
The best years of the F1 was 1998-2001 when we watch the best rivalry ever, both true gentlemans!
I believe 1982-2008 were the greatest years. After then the sport broke and it is where it is now
@@antheusmain That is *FACTUALY WRONG*
The entire 2010,2011 and 2012 seasons were phantastic and better then all of the ones that you mentioned
That's a fact
i'd say 1991 - 2000 was the greatest era in modern times
BoltMix no it’s not, unless you have only seen those, then it’s normal that you think so
Armando I bought F1 1999 on the Playstation 1 when it first came out
Their rivalry is worth a movie. I hope they make one someday
Mika Häkkinen, true champion and a true class act all the way
Forever love you "Mika" you and Michael are legends of F1. It was the best times and fights for me. 🏆🏆
The fact, that mika speaks the truth but in an extremely friendly and respectfull way, shows that he is one of a kind!!!!
They had a mutual respect for each other.
There was a beautiful moment in a post race interview.
Finallyyy. Never clicked so fast!
Edit: what a legendary way to finnish the video!!
Same haha

"When I raced againt him, I was happy to see him in my mirrors". That's why we can truly like this kind of driver. Fair, fast and strong, making some minor mistakes on track, with a big part of respect in their drive. Today, we have Kimi who did this before and Alonso in the past.
Hakkinen and Michael (my childhood hero), without a doubt the greatest rivals and friends in the same time, I miss a lot those battles.
I didn't ever like Michael Schumacher but to tell the truth is he made the sport so competitive and interesting and fun to watch.
He brought the best out of many drivers like Hakkinnen, Montoya, Alonso etc.
Miss those days...
I Love Mika He was a gentleman and absolutely top driver!
3:28 Even *Mika Hakkinen* admited you should *not* have 2 nº 1 drivers in one team.

I was born in the 87. I totally agree with you. Of all the fights that I live and feel in Formula 1, without a doubt this was the best.
I loved how mika had that much respect for him he call him ‘the Michael’. Always loved mika great guy and great racer
The only man that schumacher feared of in track and f1.
Mika and Kimi are my favorite drivers of all time 😁
That pass at Spa was amazing. Wish there were more sportsmen like Mika.
props to the audio techs. this is one of the best uses of background music i've seen/heard on this channel

Mika Hakkinen was the reason we became fans of Mclaren and F1 in general. The rivarly against Schumi was something else. For sure Mika was Schumi's greatest rival and as Michael said Mika was the only driver he respected and also "feared" the most.
Mika man,how i miss battles vs Shumacher
Hakkinen is just a class act! Always loved this guy!
Mika what a legend. Thanks for this. Good memories
All these videos give me serious goosebumps! Great work 👏🏼

I got up into F1 watching these 2 go at it. Being a Schumacher fan for life, I have more respect for Mika than any other driver out there for his professional attitude and talent to match Michael in speed consistently. I feel privileged to get to watch these two legends go head to head and behave like professionals afterward
Hope to see Shumi give a interview like this,Mike you have always been a gentleman ....Miss you both on track....with tears....Thanks for your efforts and entertainment.
I love the way that Mika explains everything. It would've been amazing to see him racing Schumacher for longer
Exactly why hes my favorite F1 driver. Mika for life
The only driver that Michael feared
Never forget about Ayrton 🙈
@@fridom44 I mean, just imagine proper rivalry between Michael and Ayrton. That would be huge...
@@fridom44 he was never afraid of ayrton. Other way around mate
@@AAA310 Senna wasnt afraid of Michael. He showed michael who was boss in a car that was slower. He even said in some interviews that senna is the greatest.
@TylerR its called being modest dumbass thats why he said that about senna and hes respecting a dead hero. And stfu with the slower car argument. Senna fanboys always use that shit. If that was the case then why was Hill about to when the championship in 94. Where tf was michaels teammate finishing? Nowhere near the top.
I don't even know how many time I rewatched this video...but it gives me goosbumps every time.
It was the great rivalry between these two legends that made me love the F1 so much. Huge respect for the two greats of all time.
I used to hate this guy as a kid. Now that I actually understand rivals and know how they treated each other I love this dude. No media attacks, just racing. Fight it out on the track, not in the press like they do these days. There will never be any greater drivers than these two. Even if Hamilton and Vettel win 20 WDC's both, they cant be compared to greats like this.
Why?
only bad people with a very bad personality disliked mika. That's a fact
Simply amazing.
I'm so happy to have started my Formula1 passion with these two champions, watching the races of these warriors with my father.
Incredible Fight between two Great F1 Champions! This was F1😍
@steveninthe agree
@steveninthe Max Verstappen is a one of case caused by a loop hole in the regulations that is now patched (and that shows because although he is rapidly fast he is also very crash happy) even still you can't say the cars are easy to drive as he has shown incredible ability, regardless i apologies for the name calling and the wording of my comment i will retrack it but i got legitimely upset with the wording of your comment "I need drivers fighting the steering wheel driving monsters and hanging on for dear life" if you ask me that wording is against modern safety standards.
I used to hate Hakkinen as a Schumi fan growing up, later on I became to both like and respect him. A class act and I hope in the future there are more drivers like Hakinnen on and off the race track.
One of the greatest duels in sports history. Mika is a great guy and a great driver and I remember watching the races with my dad in the late 90s and early 2000s, back when F1 was filled to the top with emotion.
This is, for me, the fairest and most accurate assessment of Michael 💯. No simping, no hating, just the plain truth that the finns love to speak.
