I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE A MIDWEEK WILDCAMP AS I HAD A LATE START THE NEXT DAY, HEADED UP TO A LOCAL CAVE I KNOW OF AND PREPARED. IT STARTED OFF OK, WIND WAS KEEPING THE MIDGES AT BAY, BUT THEN THE WIND VANISHED AND THEY CAME.. I HAD FORGOTTEN MY HEAD NET AND REPEL, SO I HAD NO ESCAPE FROM THEM AND HAD TO BAIL.. NIGHTMARE.. BACK OUT FRODAY HOPEFULLY HAVE A BETTER TIME.. LOL.
REMEMBER EVERYTHING FOLKS..
That was a Holly tree above your cave. Holly leaves are naturally smooth. They only become spiky as a defence from being eaten by deer etc. That's why lower leaves are spiky and the top leaves are usually smooth.
Ahh interesting. The leaves did feel “hollyish” so that’ll explain it. I’ll go back in December. Should be in full bloom. That will be nice. Cheers for watching atb 👍

I laughed so hard! What a great adventure, if not a well equipped one. You made the best of it while you could and probably lasted longer than most. I wouldn’t even have gone inside! That old owl was probably laughing because he saw the midgie swarm…
If I’d had my head net I would’ve stayed. It was unbearable though. Then the slugs appeared. I can tolerate them on me but not IN me 😂😂😂. I’m sure that owl 🦉 was calling me 😂😂 I was definitely invading.

Ahh. The slug. If I’d have had my net for the midges I’d have just evicted the slugs. Things don’t bother me (just as well like) but midges swarming like that are untenable 😂. 👍
I don't blame you for bailing out, these pesky midges are like slow Chinese torture! It does your head in. Great video, maybe in winter it will be a better option to re-visit me thinks!

Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance! :) Weve all been there, but its usually just one thing I forget not loads! Quality spot that Andy. Definitely a bear cave or wolf cave that like!!! 🤣🤣 Be great in there in the winter and rain. To be fair it might be lucky you left because that looks like a lovely Adder house. Could have fell asleep and woke up getting double jabbed in the cheek by an Adder. Then again I'd probably prefer that over the midges. HATE, HATE, HATE Midges!!! Thanks for the upload and sharing the experience.

You need a head net and a bottle of Smidge. End of midges. With ferns, you need to be aware of ticks. Oh, and don't forget your head torch :)

I smeared hand sanitizer on my arms and face. Still got attacked however. Not one bite. So there’s something to think about. I’m always paranoid about ferns too. Luckily nothing nasty this time. 👍

Done a similar wildcamp. Won't mention the location but it was near R.A.F Flyingdales Use a red light it doesn't attract midges

I knew it was a camp of doom when you had only 2 330mls cans of booze, yesterday I encountered thousands of Hawthorn flies in a Scotland heather moor, it was like something out of a horror film, I got off the summit as fast as possible, we live and learn, my first encounter in 40 years of hillwalking. How much damage was done by storm Arwen, and how much clearance has there been, as if that is where I think it is above Rothbury it was still closed when I was up there last June and September.
Yeah it caused so much damage. It’s all cleared but it’ll take years to recover. I think thrunton got it worse. Most of that is open now though. There are still some restrictions but it’s useable at least. No more storms I say. 👍

Where I live, Tasmania, the last place on earth I would camp is in a cave. Venomous snakes love to hide amongst rocks and in cool dark places. Add to that, if that's not enough, ants that have a bite that can bring on an anaphylaxis reaction and leeches that would carry you off. A head torch is an absolute no brainer and should be one of the first items in the bag (immediately followed by a snake kit here).
I think in Tasmania you won’t see me in any caves 😂😂 we’re lucky there. Probably the worst you can get is an adder bite. Non venomous. Nasty though. And ticks. Again pretty harmless to life. If handled properly.
I rushed this camp after a busy day at work. That’s why I forgot virtually everything 😂 hopefully more success next time. Cheers for watching. 👍
