There's no islam involved in this dispute. Not every brown person on the planet is Muslim! I believe Mauritius is mainly Hindu with close cultural links to India
The Chagos Islands, part of Mauritius, were separated illegally by the UK in 1965 during Mauritius' decolonization. This was done under coercion, violating UN General Assembly Resolution 1514, which prohibits the dismemberment of colonies before independence. The UK established the British Indian Ocean Territory and forcibly removed the Chagossians, leasing the largest island, Diego Garcia, to the US for a military base. Mauritius has been deprived of its territory for more than 50 years now. Mauritius went for an Advisory Opinion because the UK took preemptive measures to prevent Mauritius from pursuing a contentious case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). When Mauritius considered resigning from the Commonwealth to bypass the UK's immunity and file a case directly, the UK amended its optional clause declaration under Article 36(2) of the ICJ Statute in 2017. The amendment excluded disputes with any Commonwealth country from the ICJ's jurisdiction. This move effectively barred Mauritius from initiating a contentious case against the UK, as Mauritius was a Commonwealth member. This action reinforced the UK's resistance to being held accountable in a direct legal confrontation over the Chagos Archipelago. Consequently, Mauritius sought an advisory opinion through the United Nations General Assembly, circumventing this legal barrier. In 2019, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that the UK's separation of the Chagos Islands was unlawful and that it must return the territory to Mauritius. The UN General Assembly endorsed the ICJ's advisory opinion, reaffirming Mauritius' sovereignty. However, the UK has refused compliance, contravening international law and UN resolutions. While the resolution and advisory opinion is not legally binding, it carries significant political weight since the ruling came from the UN's highest court and the assembly vote reflects world opinion. The ruling of the ICJ would be similar if the UK agreed to go for a contentious case. The resolution also has immediate practical consequences: the UN, its specialised agencies, and all other international organisations are now bound, as a matter of UN law, to support the decolonisation of Mauritius even if the UK claim that it has no doubt about its sovereignty. The UK's assertion of sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago holds no weight in international law, and its occupation is deemed unlawful. In January 2021, the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) subsequently dismissed London’s sovereignty claims entirely while hearing a (still ongoing) maritime boundary dispute between Mauritius and Maldives. Maldives submitted preliminary objections to the court that there is an ongoing dispute between Mauritius and the UK with regards to the sovereingnty of Chagos. The court has ruled that this dispute has already been resolved by the ICJ that Mauritius is the only sovereign state over Chagos. Moreover, UN maps have been updated since then to reflect the fact that the Chagos islands are Mauritian. The UN’s FAO also submitted a legal opinion at the May 2022 session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission that the UK should no longer be treated as a ‘coastal state’, but rather as a state that simply fishes in the Indian Ocean. For the UK, continuing to ignore the ICJ’s ruling against it while criticising China for ignoring similar ICJ rulings against Beijing in 2016 when it comes to the South China Sea is a credibility problem.

In 1965 the UK bought the Chagos Islands from Mauritius for £3,000,000 (three million pounds) via the Lancaster House agreement. Mauritius itself became fully independent from the UK in 1968 (without the Chagos Islands), but in the 1980's the Mauritian government claimed that it had been forced to sell the Chagos islands under duress and claimed that the transfer was illegal under international law (no doubt after they'd spent the three million quid) and began campaigning through the UN to have the Chagos Islands returned. So now the Chagos are no doubt going to be returned to Mauritius will the UK have the present day value of the Chagos Islands refunded to the treasury by Mauritius? not a chance, because not one UK politician has the backbone to speak out and defend the interests of the UK.

They will not jeopardize Indian Govt because they cannot afford to. 3/4 Foreign Direct Investments flowing to India comes via Mauritius which has treaty obligations. That keeps Mauritius afloat. So there is no room or scope sudden changes. And the treaty has an agreement which ensures the lease is automatically renewed in 2036 for a 99 year period.Mind you, people are living in these places with security personnel. What more could one want. The UK Govt will incur a startup expense of 25 million pounds.
One thing struck me as odd though. Without placing the agreement and discussion in Parliament, how can the UK PM make changes to the crown's sovereign territory?
This treaty does not set any precedent. The Falklands are British as long as people living there wish it to be so. Gibralter is a lil messy as they do not want to exit the EU and they are a tax haven. So UK and the EU need to talk it out.
I am sorry I was half asleep when I wrote that. So words are missing here and there. I don't want to edit that now.🤦
