I would say that playing with the power cards is mandatory especially for anyone who is playing the game for the first time as Dracula. When my group played for the first time, the hunters received an ally early on who revealed the hideout in the 6th slot. This allowed the hunters to close in on Dracula fairly quickly. Dracula cannot backtrack without the advanced rules, which forced Dracula on a couple turns to only be able to move to one specific location. Soon, all hunters were on Dracula's location. All of Dracula's escape cards were nullified during combat and he was quickly defeated. LEARN THE ADVANCED RULES, or else it just might make your first playthrough a very anticlimactic one.
I think it's good to clarify that DUSK is the end of the DAY phase and that DAWN is the end of the NIGHT phase. This was a little confusing when combat cards say that certain effects happen only if combat occurs at NIGHT (though combat generally takes place at DUSK or DAWN).
I guess I thought it was clear from the turn sequence on the character sheets, but that's a good point. I find it helpful to frame it as dawn occurring at the START of the day phase and dusk occurring at the START of the night.
Nice touch, the red threads in the eyes! He’s come to sock the blood of the living…
This is one of the best and clearest explanation of this game I have seen. And the socks are great :-)
Silly sock puppets. Best video explaining the game.

You're right. I should have been more clear about the downside of not using the power cards. Thanks for the feedback!
