Takenoko has since released some updated rules, and those include the following changes that aren't found in this video (which are based on the first edition rules): * You must place immediately improvements and irrigations when you get one. * If there are no more improvement, you can move an improvement already placed. * You can place an improvement on a tile even if there is bamboos on it. * To validate gardener objectives, the gardener must be located on one of the tiles corresponding to the objective. * The rain allows you to add a bamboo on a non-irrigated tile.
NOTE: The designers changed some rules to the game, years after this video released. Here are the adjustments you'll find in updated rule books: * You must place immediately improvements and irrigations when you get one. There were also some balancing adjustments made to components: * Some Panda objectives points decreased (ex: 5 points instead of 6 for green/yellow/red). * The two colors Plot objectives scheme is slightly different

Great looking game! The new background color and table look great! The intro to this play through looked amazing. I bet that took quite a bit of work to get it done. Great work, Rodney!!
Excellent video as always. This is one of my favorite games and our go to gateway game. The collectors edition is WELL worth the cost in my opinion too, presuming you enjoy the game of course. Excellent addition with the back table too. Wish we had the room to do that as well. Adds a nice piece to the room and highlights the game and pieces well.

We did ultimately scale back the intros. They are fun to do, and can help set the tone, but, on balance, a lot of people want to get to the tutorial, which I can appreciate.

Your video really alleviated our "beginners" anxieties. THANKS SO MUCH. We are still arguing, When the weather dice is thrown, must the course it lands on be initiated immediately, or can it be delayed as a strategic advantage to be used later in the turn?
+Dana Stone Glad you're finding the video helpful :) In the rule book on page 4: When his turn comes, a player must perform two steps in this order: 1) Determine Weather conditions 2) Perform actions and complete objectives However, keep in mind that a player never has to apply the effect of the weather dice, he can decide to ignore it (from the Takenoko FAQ).
It's funny that this is the game that's up right now. I have been wrestling with rather to pull the trigger on Takenoko or not. This pushed me right up to the edge and I have a feeling that the rest of the series will push me right over. Question: When the thunderstorm scares the panda, can you move it to the same tile it's already on? The rule book says, "Move the panda to any tile." I've house-ruled that the Rain symbol on the weather dice will grow 1 stalk of bamboo (or 2 if it's fertilized) no mater if it's irrigated or not. The water is coming from the sky, not the pond. It also lets player choose any tile to grow, which is helpful in speeding up the game a little bit.
@@WatchItPlayed Does this same rule apply when taking a normal Panda action? The rules I have are not clear. Can a player take a Panda action, leave the Panda in place, and eat bamboo from the plot he is already on? Or do you HAVE to move the Panda to "any other" plot (following the movement rules)?
I GOTTA pick this up, looks too fun I have some questions though beforehand: 1. When claiming the Bamboo Cards as you did around 15:08, the Gardner doesn't have to be on the individual plot or plot color to complete that action? 2. When/ if your player draws the Wind Climate card and can use the same action twice, those dual actions count as both actions or can the player do tone action twice then One other? 3. When a plot has Auto-Irrigation that plot alone has irrigation, but for adjacent plots to receive irrigation there would have to be a blue marker between them so the non-irrigated one can't feed off the auto-irrigated one. Great vid
1) The "Gardener" cards all have his picture on them, he's not required to claim one of those objectives. 2) Normally, your two actions have to be different. When you roll the "wind" on the weather dice, it simply means you can do two of the same action (optional). 3) Right. The "water shed" improvement just provides water to that one tile and it can't be used to start an irrigation channel.
At first i thought this game was just a knock off of Settlers of Catan. I'm glad i watched this! also i usually laugh out loud when watching these videos, but 12:46 really cracked me up. I love this channel...
Thank you so much for your videos! ♡ If I don't understand rules in a game, I always come look your videos and it helps a lot! ;) I got the Takenoko game myself recently, and I have a question about the weather conditions: when you throw a wind, do you only do two same actions? In other weather conditions, you throw a die and after that you do two normal actions. Do you do a third action after the wind action's two same actions? I'm sorry if the question is confusing :) You're awesome, keep up the good work and greetings from Finland :)
If you roll the wind, then when you take your normal 2 actions, you may choose to use the same action twice (where normally, you'd need to do 2 different actions). Hope that helps! Thanks for the kind words about the videos :)
Your videos are absolutely amazing! So easy to understand the rules and the gameplay videos really make it easy to see if the game seems fun or not. I just bought Takenoko thanks to this video! I intend to play with my wife, but I will also try and teach my kids as it seems like a fairly simple game. Thank you Rodney, I look forward to your next upload! Also - I guess Luke does not want to share any dice rolling techniques - even though I could really use 'em.
Clarification question: if you try to claim a location objective, and the tiles need to be irrigated, if the tile has an irrigation improvement tile, but doesn't have a channel connected to the pond, does it fulfil that requirement?
A plot is said to be “irrigated” if it is adjacent to the pond tile, if an irrigation channel is placed on one of its sides, or if it carries a watershed improvement.
Allways clear on the first timend fun to watch, thanks A LOT for your work Rodney !! I hope your show is enough to make you a living because you certenly deserve it !!! Have a nice day :) One of your French-Canadian Fan
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the video :0 We actually have a fundraiser going right now to allow me to continue for another year: www.indiegogo.com/projects/watch-it-played-season-6/x/367066#/
Hello. I have three more questions. 1.when should the weather conditions be applied? Shall we apply them directly after throwing the weather dice? For example: I have a question mark on the dice. Then I pull a task card and only then I choose which weather conditions to apply. 2. If there is a rain on the dice, how many segments will rise on a fertilized field?
Takes Rodney more than 20 minutes to explain this, and he's the Pro! My friend wants me to explain how to play...but doesn't want to watch a video, read the rules, or listen to more than 90 seconds of directions!
Loved how you explained the game in such good and easy way! I've just bought it and I've totally understood how to play. Thank you very much for this video!
Great video!! Great channel!!! Thanks!! One quick question please, is it optional to use the weather abilities?? E.g. I roll the die and storm comes, do I have to move the panda or I have the option to ignore this step?? Thanks
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
I noticed that some of the gardener’s cards had icons on the side. Does this mean, like the plot card, that the gardener’s objectives have to also meet criteria.
To fulfill the gardeners objective , the gardener must be present on the plot reflected in the picture of the objective card ??? Or it can be present in any other plot ???
Back when this video was shot, the gardener did NOT have to be present. This is something they changed years later, so those changes aren't reflected in the video (if that is why you are asking).
Hello. Thank you for this overview. I have a question: if panda stops on one of the fields, does it have to it bamboo or it is not necessary? thank you
I don’t understand the ending. Say it’s a game between A and B. A is taller so has gone first, B gets to 9 first so takes the emperor card. Does the turn they took the card between become the last round? Would A take a final turn, or would A take their last turn and then B takes their last turn?
Just to help clarify, it doesn't really matter who took the first turn. Whoever gets their 9th objective first, takes the emperor card and then each "other" player gets one more turn.
On the plot objective, for example if the objective is three green tiles connected together and there are five green tiles connected together in the game, is it acceptable? Or the three greens must be surrounded by other colors or empty space to be exactly the same pattern?
It's okay if other green tiles are touching it. As long as somewhere in your garden you ca see the exact arrangement on the card (ignoring all other tiles around it), you're good.
I have a questions about completing objectives. Do you have to complete your own objectives or can your opponent inadvertently complete one of yours. Do you have to reveal completed gardener objectives since the bamboo-scape may change over time?
The objective just has to be in the garden, it won't matter who placed the plots or grew the bamboo. So your opponents can inadvertently be helping you. :)
This is my first video I've watched on your channel. You guys have a great channel here and I look forward to watching more videos! I have just recently bought Takenoko and this video really helped me learn how to play. I think may just get friends new to the game to watch this instead of me trying to explain it to them! lol.
Hey Karl, thanks for the kind words and thanks for checking out our series, really great to hear you found it helpful an these videos do get used by people to help their friends learn the game before game night, so I hope they can help your group too!
Hi. When showing improvement play, you move the panda to a terrain. Then remove an bamboo. Placing the improvement, in this case the double growth. Then you say that if this is the first time irrigated you get 2 bamboo. This is not the first time, since you ate an bamboo, so you wouldn't really get thoose 2 bamboo pieces?
I hope you answer this! When you get the storm with the weather die you can move the Panda anywhere but, does it count like one of the two actions? Thank you!! GREAT videos!!!
Rodney Smith! Over been away for a while, but Im back watching the episodes. I tried to donate during the fundraiser, but I had trouble getting it to take my card, and never got back around to trying again. Ill have to they again next fundraiser.
That Special Edition looks awesome... maybe a hundred or 2 too expensive though, 260$ (on my online store of choice) is just a bit too much for me. Game looks fun, it's on my wishlist already. Can't wait to see your playthrough.
Yikes! $300 for the collector's edition verus $34 for the regular set. The pieces look wonderful, I am very tempted to get the collector set, lol. And when I saw the big dice, my jaw just dropped....must have the bg dice, lol. Now the question is: will it be raman noodles for a month or the regular set???? lol Anyhow, good instructional video man and I love the back table.
I have a couple questions. 1) If i draw a Gardener card and the stipulations are met can I claim it? or does the game require me to do the gardening. 2) Also can I claim during other peoples turn?
You can't claim during another persons turn, only your own - however, if you draw a pattern, and it exists in the garden, you can claim the card - you don't have to keep track of who created what elements in the garden. Hope that helps.
***** thanks that really helps. I have one last question if you don't mind. the box came with two extra plot tiles that have a panda drawn on them i am assuming these are like wild plot tile cards that you can place once you run out of the traditional plot tile colors (green, yellow, pink) but i could be completely wrong.
mmateo6 I'm not sure. I didn't get those in my set. They could just be junk. Sometimes the publisher will have extra space on a token sheet, so they just include a couple "dummy" tokens, since those sections been to be punched out by the machine anyway.
Hi, i have a question on the last player moves - do the players end in equal number of turns, that is, if player 1 finishes first, everybody gets one final turn, and if player 2 finishes first, only players 3 and 4 get a final turn? Or everybody gets one last, regardless of the turn order? Thank you!
Everyone gets one last last turn (except the person who triggered the end of the game). This means there could be an uneven number of turns between players. ua-cam.com/video/o6MJEbGbCNs/v-deo.html
I love this channel. It sold me on the game, keep them coming! Quick question: If you have the required bamboo to complete a panda objective card, BUT also have other colours stored, are you able to claim the objective card? Or does the bamboo in your panda's belly have to reflect exactly what the card says, and nothing more? It came up today, and would love to hear your thoughts!
Glad you enjoyed the video. Until bamboo in the garden, which must match exactly the picture on the gardener cards, you can have left over food int he panda's tummy, when completing the panda cards.
Thank you for the quick answer! I'm new in the board games world and just looove your channel! Which game will you recommend for me to plat with my 8 years old girl and 6 years old boy? i'm thinking of Tokaido, Takenoko or King of Tokyo. Unless you have another recommendation. Thank you!!
+amras vardamir I don't offer opinions on that - I think each person is going to be different. Hopefully the video and play through can help you decide though.
The instruction book is very vague on the point of whether or not you must play an irrigation stick when you select one, or store it. There is no assigned space for them on the standard (not collector's edition) game board. You mention that you can indeed store it, which is how our family plays it on our physical copy. However, I played this on Board Game Arena, and I was NOT given the option to store it, I had to immediately play it on a plot tile. Was there some way to store it when playing on BGA that I missed, or is the rule truly that an irrigation stick must immediately be played?
It could be that the BGA rules do not reflect the information I was provided at the time I created the video (we worked with the publisher on the video, and I recall at the time discovering that there were rules in the book that were not clear, and I had to hunt down the correct answers directly). I shot this long enough ago that I don't recall exactly which questions those were, but I'm personally confident that I had the rules correct at the time. That doesn't mean they couldn't have changed their minds, or made a new ruling later.
@@WatchItPlayed I thank you kindly for the quick reply. My family will continue playing the way we learned from you, and I guess I'll just have to remember that BGA plays a little differently.
Quick question: if a player moves the panda to a slot has 3 sections of bamboo, can i play the “no eating” improvement on that tile to prevent the panda from eating it, even if it’s not my turn yet?
I'm not sure I'm clear on the question - what action are you taking to play an improvement when it's not your turn? It's been awhile since I shot this, but I don't remember any sections of the video talking about taking actions when it's not your turn. Do you have a time stamp in the video that talks about being able to do this?
Sorry another question. If you picked up a plot objective and that formation is already in the garden, can you claim it as complete or do you have to create another formation on your card?
You state that the result of the Weather Die is optional and can be ignored by the player if they wish. However, the wording in the rulebook suggests the player must take the action rolled: "The player rolls the Weather Die and applies the effect of the climatic conditions obtained." With the exception of the Wind result, which the rulebook specifically states is optional, I would interpret the quoted extract to mean that all other weather condition effects are mandatory. What do you think?
+Sunny Neuroshima They released a FAQ for the game, that says the weather die is optional and I included that updated information in the video - so you can trust the video in this case :).
Takenoko has since released some updated rules, and those include the following changes that aren't found in this video (which are based on the first edition rules):
* You must place immediately improvements and irrigations when you get one.
You do the clearest game demos I've seen. Definitely worth subscribing. Thanks buddy!
Bob Rashley Thank you Bob!
NOTE: The designers changed some rules to the game, years after this video released. Here are the adjustments you'll find in updated rule books:
* You must place immediately improvements and irrigations when you get one.
There were also some balancing adjustments made to components:
* Some Panda objectives points decreased (ex: 5 points instead of 6 for green/yellow/red).
* The two colors Plot objectives scheme is slightly different

Chris Mullins Thanks for the assist Chris!
Damn this die is just way too big. Whatever. I always come back to your channel, cause it's joy to follow your great explanations.
Damn you Rodney. That collectors edition looks simply beautiful. I have never wanted to drop $300 on a game about feeding a panda before.
It was a lot of money, to be sure! You end up getting to try it?
Excellent explanation! Thank you!
You're very welcome Jonathan!
Hey Rodney great explanation!
Just one question:
Is it mandatory to use the die action? Or I can skip it when necessary?
A player never has to apply the effect of the weather dice, they can decide to ignore it.
Nice job explaining, this game sounds like a lot of fun. Wish I could find the one that you have
Thanks for checking it out. Yeah, I think the collectors edition is probably a little harder to find these days!
At first i thought this game was just a knock off of Settlers of Catan. I'm glad i watched this!
also i usually laugh out loud when watching these videos, but 12:46 really cracked me up. I love this channel...
Glad we've been able to creates some smiles :)
Nope, he's keeping them all to himself :) Very glad you enjoyed the video Tobias - hope the family enjoys the game as well!
Sold! your videos are really Good! Now I'm saving for Krosmaster and Boss Monster :D
Thanks Richard - very glad you enjoy the videos :)
Have a nice day :)
One of your French-Canadian Fan
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the video :0 We actually have a fundraiser going right now to allow me to continue for another year: www.indiegogo.com/projects/watch-it-played-season-6/x/367066#/
8 years ago!!! Whoa!!! That's awesome!!!
Time flies, huh?!
1) You resolve it after rolling the die.
2) Two.
Hope that helps!
Takes Rodney more than 20 minutes to explain this, and he's the Pro! My friend wants me to explain how to play...but doesn't want to watch a video, read the rules, or listen to more than 90 seconds of directions!
Good luck!
Very well explained video. We love Takenoko, this is a great video to scrub up on the rules.
Thanks very much! You've a great teacher!
So kind of you to say - thank you!
you do the best demos! Subscribed!
John Dominguez Thanks so much for the kind words, and for subscribing!
Page 5- plots - draw 3 tiles choose 1 and place the remaining 2 back on top of the deck....not bottom. Thats how I understood it.
This was later changed. You'll find it updated in the FAQ here: boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Takenoko_FAQ
Thank you. My game is new and would have expected the rule book to be 100%.
The new setup looks really great.
Thanks Josh - making little improvements along the way has hopefully improved the viewing experience too.
Loved how you explained the game in such good and easy way! I've just bought it and I've totally understood how to play. Thank you very much for this video!
You're very welcome, sounds like you'll be playing (and hopefully enjoying it) soon!
Do you have a time stamp in the video to an example of this (I shot this awhile ago, and am not exactly sure what you're referring to)?
To fulfill the gardeners objective , the gardener must be present on the plot reflected in the picture of the objective card ???
Or it can be present in any other plot ???
Back when this video was shot, the gardener did NOT have to be present. This is something they changed years later, so those changes aren't reflected in the video (if that is why you are asking).
Hello. Thank you for this overview. I have a question: if panda stops on one of the fields, does it have to it bamboo or it is not necessary? thank you
Hey there. Yes, the Panda will always eat, if it is able to.
Watch It Played cool thanks. That is how we played it tonight.
Excellent overview! You've sold me on the game.
So glad you checked it out. Thanks!
Can you make a short video on how to play takenoko with the chibis expansion. Great videos :)
Thanks for the interest Thomas. I avoid covering expansions because there are so many different games I want to cover (and so little time!)
Correct.
Season 3 has begun!! Woop Woop!
I hope you answer this! When you get the storm with the weather die you can move the Panda anywhere but, does it count like one of the two actions? Thank you!! GREAT videos!!!
No, the weather die counts as its own action. So the panda movement does not count as an action as a result of the weather die.
Thank you!
Thanks to Drew for the assist!
Nicely done, sir. Thank you!
You're welcome Samuel, glad you liked it!
Ronnie, sorry, are you going to demo Botany ? I could not find any video from you about it - thanks 🙏
Thanks for the interest! I talk a bit about that here: ua-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/v-deo.html&t=342 And just so you know, my name is Rodney. Cheers!
@@WatchItPlayed thank you 🙏
Rodney Smith! Over been away for a while, but Im back watching the episodes. I tried to donate during the fundraiser, but I had trouble getting it to take my card, and never got back around to trying again. Ill have to they again next fundraiser.
Thanks for wanting to support - that means a lot!
That Special Edition looks awesome... maybe a hundred or 2 too expensive though, 260$ (on my online store of choice) is just a bit too much for me.
Game looks fun, it's on my wishlist already.
Can't wait to see your playthrough.
Yeah, quite a pricey edition to be sure - thankfully there is a regular version too :)
Nicely done, looks fun!
Thanks for checking it out Jason.
If the gardener lands on a spot that isn't irrigated, do the adjacent tiles still grow bamboo?
+Alex Munkachy As long as the adjacent plots share the same color and are irrigated, yes!
Btw, this collector edition is fantastic! I love the big panda!
It was pretty great, right? :)
Great video, (as always !)
Thank you kindly Zottle!
Yikes! $300 for the collector's edition verus $34 for the regular set. The pieces look wonderful, I am very tempted to get the collector set, lol. And when I saw the big dice, my jaw just dropped....must have the bg dice, lol. Now the question is: will it be raman noodles for a month or the regular set???? lol
Anyhow, good instructional video man and I love the back table.
Did you end up on raman noodles for a month?
@@WatchItPlayed Nope, I managed to move some money around from different things and ended up getting the collector’s edition.
@@pep7890 Very cool! It's quite an impressive set :)
This game is a blast
Glad you enjoyed this title :)
Incredibly clear instructions. Thanks very much!
Thank you for the kind words.
Thanks!!
You are the greatest!
1 question- can other player complete a task for me or I have to do the final action?
Hey Yoni, as long as the task is complete, it doesn't matter who contributed to it.
Thank you for the quick answer! I'm new in the board games world and just looove your channel!
Which game will you recommend for me to plat with my 8 years old girl and 6 years old boy?
i'm thinking of Tokaido, Takenoko or King of Tokyo. Unless you have another recommendation.
Thank you!!
You forgot the rule that any time the panda eats bamboo, the player must exclaim, "Um yum yummm!" on the panda's behalf.
Fair!
hi Rodney i like all of your videos tutorial best of all on youtube when can you do a tutorial of Warhammer Quest Adventure Card Game???
No plans to currently, but I hope to personally play it soon. So many games, so little time!
Cool thanks you think that my 9 years old daughter like the takenoko game
+amras vardamir I don't offer opinions on that - I think each person is going to be different. Hopefully the video and play through can help you decide though.
Ok thanks and your videos help me a lot keep up
The instruction book is very vague on the point of whether or not you must play an irrigation stick when you select one, or store it.
@Watch It Played ah so I can only play the improvements on my turn only. I missed that piece of info. Thanks!
Sorry another question. If you picked up a plot objective and that formation is already in the garden, can you claim it as complete or do you have to create another formation on your card?
Check here: ua-cam.com/video/o6MJEbGbCNs/v-deo.htmlm22s
You state that the result of the Weather Die is optional and can be ignored by the player if they wish. However, the wording in the rulebook suggests the player must take the action rolled: "The player rolls the Weather Die and applies the effect of the climatic conditions obtained." With the exception of the Wind result, which the rulebook specifically states is optional, I would interpret the quoted extract to mean that all other weather condition effects are mandatory. What do you think?
+Sunny Neuroshima They released a FAQ for the game, that says the weather die is optional and I included that updated information in the video - so you can trust the video in this case :).
+Watch It Played I should have known you would have the truth to hand! Thanks for the great work you're doing.
+Sunny Neuroshima Oh, I make my share of mistakes - understandable for you to ask :)
do i have any reason at all to put down a panda or an emperor objective?
You can only hold 5 cards in your hand, so you will have to put some down in order to get more objectives to have enough to win.
