"it's tracking me perfectly" shooting at f16 on a wide angle... Anything with such a big dof just isn't tracking anymore, the focusing is pretty much infinity anyway.
As a professional photographer that has moved from Nikon to Sony to Canon in the last two years. I have to say that you are forgetting three really important issues here. Availability of high quality lenses, reliability and service. Nikon is far beyond on selection of good lenses and Sony quality and service sucks. So when you compare all three systems and look at the big picture. Canon is the winner in my opinion.
I have been a Canon and Sony shooter for years now. I have got no idea what are you banging on about when referring to customer service (and other guys with similar argument). Never have Sony let me down. Not even once over 5 years now of using their various cameras. I am based in Europe so perhaps the situation here is different. I must admit that I never had to send my Canon to service - zero issues. One thing though comes to mind: what do you do with your cameras that service is one of 3 deciding factors to you? I am not a fanboy but I have noticed this when it comes to Sony: first for many the lens line up was an issue - fixed. Later it was constant complaining about the service - not an issue in Europe. Now it is the colour science...For Christ sake.
@@PK-ql5en I think you're one of the anomalies. Canon service centers have always been prompt and I've had nothing, but good things to say. Sony is good too in my experience, but I agree with Aron. Canon is the only company with a prominent foot in both the photo and video scenes with their bodies and they're on top most of the time. I used multiple brands over the years (Sony for 10 years, Canon for 6 years and Panasonic GH5 for 2 years). If I have to rate them, Canon is 1st, Sony 2nd, Panasonic last. Every brand has their pros and cons, but Canon's pros list trumps the others. This is my take after using the 5DMIV for the last couple of years: Canon (5DMIV): Pros: - Best weather sealing (aside from the 1dxmii) - Canon colour science is always top notch - Best autofocus system - C-Log - Dual card slots for recording - 4K video codec is a dream to colour correct and grade compared to all competitors (aside from RAW) - Reliable - Better battery life (almost 3x that of mirrorless competitors) Cons: - Lack of higher framerates in both 1080p and 4K - MPEG is great for colouring, but needs a lot of storage You'll find a lot of Sony mirrorless to have better low light performance (though it's really just a savior in poor lighting conditions in run-and-gun situations and is crippled by S-LOG's blocking issues). Sony has IBIS, so no need to invest in specific lenses for IS and has more compressed 4k files for those who are more fixated on harddrive space, than overall control with your quality. Panasonic GH5 has a very vocal cult following, but the camera falls short after using it for 2 years. Couldn't get over the poor colours and poor indoor performance (low light is due to M4/3) and it's poor dynamic range is hard to get past. It was a viable option in the 4k world on it's release, especially for the lower cost, but it's fallen behind at this point and is lower cost for a reason.
It's sad they need to put up a sign saying photography/videography is present. You're in public, you should not have an expectation of privacy. Photography isn't a crime.
CDNChaoZ I'm going out to shoot on a public sidewalk tomorrow for work and my employer is requiring that I get a release form from every person I shoot. Very sad.
rolandsv8 I'm not sure. I find it way more invasive to run up to someone asking for them to sign something and give me their name/email, than just taking their photo.
Its one of those things... if you are already invested in a systems lens lineup.. the difference in the sensor isn't enough to warrant the change over to sony or Nikon.. but if your starting fresh looking for a brand to invest in.. both Sony and Nikon are the way to go if we are talking strictly sensor image quality. I say this in my reviews but, as a canon shooter with a ton of lenses.. I am just too damn lazy to sell all of that glass for a tiny bump up in IQ.. and having to give up my favorite lenses.
The practical reality is that if the IQ difference is too small for invested users to care about, it's also too small for new users to care about. Canon's worst body from five years ago is still a huge step up from any cellphone or compact point and shoot. Canon is still the best ecosystem on the market, hands down. They make highly polished products that work, and their customer care is second to none. I was shocked when I called to arrange a lens repair and the Canon service person was actually willing to just chat about photography in general. I don't think I've ever seen a customer service department anywhere that's in the same league as Canon (it was just a $250 repair to a $1200 lens that I dropped, AF was wonky, nothing extraordinary). Canon isn't just a good camera maker, they are one of the most highly organized corporations in the entire world. Regardless of minor advantages any competitor may have right now, I think it's safe to say that Canon will always have the upper hand in the long run.
Everyone is so obsessed with specs nowadays. No one talks about actually using the camera, how it feels in the hands, the UI, reliability etc. maybe my hands are too big but even just picking up a Sony body is rather uncomfortable for me
I really don't understand this negativeness in the comments. The 5D IV is a wonderful camera - yes, it plays a bit of a catch up game, but now it's there (a bit weaker DR, much better video AF, etc.). Also it shoots natively on Canon glass, and glass is the most important aspect of professional photography.
Yeah. On the other hand, I'd choose it with these specs because of the dual-pixel video AF alone. Smooth AF means the most to me as a one man video crew.
If it had the A99ii specs there would've been a meltdown! It's a shame, because the Sony will truly and well crush the 5DIV in almost every aspect, but will sell in far, far smaller quantities. And so, Canon will have all the incentive they want to keep crippling their offerings.
Yeah, unrivaled DPAF and great out of the camera color is about the only thing keeping Canon alive at this stage... Sony A7RII/A7SII, great cameras, but AF doesn't match Canon's and color is super frustrating, unless you like staring at a monitor and tweaking the image for hours on end. Nikon. Lovely stuff. Great for stills. Video... they need some catching up to do. I'd love to get me the D750 as a hybrid camera if it weren't so basic. I'm a M43 kinda guy. I started interchangeable lens systems with the GH2 and stuck to it. I like the mix of a compact system with excellent video capabilities. And honestly, I shoot just about everything manual anyways! The thing for me is... no fullframe look, no fullframe lowlight capability, which makes it a little less flexible. Wish Nikon would enter the APS-C mirrorless market (like a Samsung NX1, but with Nikon D5500 sensor and fully articulated touchscreen) and Metabones would do a sick Speedbooster for it. That would be my kind of thing.
I am a full time wedding and event photographer currently using the 5D Mark III...I would have bought the new 5D Mark IV in a minute if they had removed the AA filter...Canon should at least give us the option to remove it like they did with the 5DS and 5DS-r...I think unfortunately, I may switch to Nikon, which is something I really don't want to do, but Canon is not giving people like me much of a choice...The 5D Mark IV would be stellar with it's current specs and also with the AA Optical Low Pass filter removed.... I hope Canon is listening and may consider this option (and soon) before they lose too many people including me.......Thanks and nice video... Philip
I personally feel the pro-dslr field is very subjective. I have personally been able to play with the D810, the MarkIV and the AR7ii and frankly, I appreciate the quality of them all, but stuck with the canon eco-system and just bought the Mark iV because im familiar with the touch and feel and configuration (I would recommend you stick with your brand what ever it is). We all love to compare facts and pit cameras and brands against each other, but to be blunt, most photographers will never fully realize the potential of their cameras anyways. I think at this stage of the game it really comes down to how comfortable you are with the layout because our clients cant tell the difference in picture quality, so why does it matter? Go with your gut. But at this stage of the game. 30-50 megapixel really doesn't matter, and at this quality it really boils down to comfort and ease of use. Thats my 2 cents -S
Spec-sheet peepers always give Canon grief because they do look underwhelming on paper compared to competitors. Thing is, once you use the systems side-by-side, you really start to appreciate Canon and what it offers. I currently shoot with both Sony (have for over 10 years now) and added Canon to the mix probably about 6 years ago. Sony has it's perks (like inner body stabilization, low light performance, etc.), but it's not free of flaws. For example, the low light performance is great, but S-Log is cringeworthy compared to C-Log. Canon's autofocus system is the best on the market for DSLR and mirrorless to date. Not to mention battery life, menu simplicity, colour science and reliability. They absolutely need to start upper their spec game, but their cameras are the only ones that have an argument in both the photo and video world. It's rare to find photographers bothering with anything other than Canon, Fuji or Nikon. On the flip side, videographers stick to Canon, Sony, and Panasonic. Everyone only likes to argue one side, when Canon's systems are often used with and sit at the top of both categories. Don't even get me started on the GH5, has to have one of the weirdest cult followings and has some pretty lackluster results compared to both Canon and Sony. Had the chance to use it for 2 years alongside the other 2 and have no plans on going back. Couldn't get over the yellow tinted colours and poor dynamic range and low-light performance indoors.
The thing I like most about your channel is the connection between "Photographer and Videographer". I love seeing everytime Jordan give his thoughts as a videographer about every camera. Because lets be honest those reviews matter to differentiate new cameras. So far you have been my favorite review channel in UA-cam. Keep it up!
Thought that video quality was really great, so was the focus most of the time. Definitely one of your best videos. I can really see the video working for journalism.
Ivan Phan The D500 and D750 right? It only tilts though, it doesn't flip fully like the D5500, which is a feature I really like to protect the screen when not in use.
A nicely balanced review, Chris and Jordan. I appreciate the integrity you've brought to this review that more, ahem, passionate reviewers, tend to have lost.
Jordan, in what profile did you record this? I mean even if it doesn't have a proper flat profile, you can turn down the sharpness and contrast and grade it a little in post, right?
Yes...not made explicitly for video that is for sure.. as such all the griping about the crop factor is really only an issue if you are flipping between video and stills. In fact all cinema video cameras have some sort of crop factor. The only two options for video cameras are to either take the full frame signal and do the math to reduce it to a 4K signal OR do a crop without all the processing issues. Obviously the SONY full frame cameras attempt to do the processing from the full frame chipset but obviously they do tend to overheat. The scaling processing does take some cpu power so most camera manufacturers take the easier path and let the user deal with the lens and crop adjustment. Surprised you felt the M3 is a bit soft . Alot of DSLR cinema people tell everyone they should turn down the sharpness in the profile settings . I have no issue with the softness/sharpness of the 5DM3. It is a nice upgrade and nice camera but too expensive but for video I'd prefer to get the cinema cameras...C300 etc.
I'm having a hard time justifying this as an upgrade to my 5d3. The resolution increase is only 16.8% at 100% viewing size. When downsized to 3840x2560 it becomes a 9.6% increase, and to 2560x1707 it becomes 6.4%. I compared both the mk3 and mk4 in store by taking sample photos. The resolution increase is not noticeable at 1920x or 2560x (output JPG sizes viewed on typical monitors). Shadows are cleaner on the 5d4, but the overall tonal range is similar and I rarely "push" my RAWs more than 1.5 stops (typically less than 1 stop). I think 50mp is a bit much. 36-40MP (perhaps with a weak AA filter) would be my choice. The Any chance the 5ds/r will go backwards in resolution? I think Sony makes smart decisions with their megapixel counts - 24, 36, 42. Canon currently has 22, 30 (too little) and 50 (too much). I do not want to switch to Sony because I value their Colour rendition, ergonomics and lens quality too much.
I agree with you on allot of your points. The only reason I've reluctantly stuck with Canon is because they make some of the best Tilt shift Lenses. I have a mark III and a 5DSR and this new camera doesn't fill any gap or requirement. I thought I was definitely going to pre order and when they announced this I just thought, "what pile of bullshit. What I will say is the image quality from the 5DSR is actually quite something, it's not as good as my A7RII but it's much easier to use and manage than the Sony. For landscapes and cityscapes I think the 5DSR is incredible, you can also shoot at 28mp RAW too without any crop, making the MK 4 utterly useless for me. Lastly I'm not sold on this idea that Canon colour is somehow better, it isn't. Colours in RAW files are completely manageable and easy to change to whatever.
It all depends on what you shoot. The out-of-camera Canon colour is significantly better than that from Sony and you can't always get exactly what you want if there are no neutrals in the scene. So if you shot a model outdoors and there were no neutrals how would you colour correct? You would literally guess and this is highly inaccurate. The obvious answer is to use a colour checker chart or to set a custom white balance, but many people don't always carry white balance cards/colour checker charts. Canon colour output is so good that often you can shoot and not even touch colour in post. If you have a 5D Mk III and a 5DsR there's little point in getting a 3rd body. If you only had the Mark III there's a huge benefit! Just about every feature has been improved upon and AF speed + IQ alone are way ahead. Taking a few shots in a store would tell know stuff all!
Here are some things you might find interesting: Dual Pixel RAW contains extra dynamic Range: www.rawdigger.com/howtouse/canon-dual-pixel-mode-highlights-are-there In the studio test shots on DPReview the 5D-IV has more highlight headroom than the D810 at their respective base ISO settings: www.dropbox.com/s/4ztovpfhkm5yrnk/5D-IV%20highlight%20headroom.jpg?dl=0 According to DXO measurements the D810 only has better dynamic range than the 5D-IV at ISO 64 and ISO 100. At ISO 200 they are even but at every other ISO setting the 5D-IV has superior dynamic range: www.dropbox.com/s/4xqemvle0nej1hj/5D-IV%20DR.jpg?dl=0 The 5D-IV DR advantage is clealy visible in shadows at high ISO: www.dropbox.com/s/36ih2pwej6gfmle/5D-IV%20vs%20D810%20ISO%206400.jpg?dl=0 Sync speed on the 5D-III was also 1/200s, weak I know, but point is 5D-IV did not take a step backwards. The back buttons customizations are fricken potent!!!!!!!!!! Watch this video to learn what you can actual do with the system: ua-cam.com/video/D_R77Gs8Q6E/v-deo.html Overall I think you guys did a good job of review. I only disagree on your assessment of stills image quality as can be seen by the mountain of evidence I posted above.
I appreciate how you guys took your time to get to know this Cam before reviewing it thoroughly, most other channels hurried up like posers to throw somethin half together on the first day of release. Respect
After all the complaining, the video looks absolutely great. Colors on point, autofocus great, sharp, no noise reduction artifacts. The actual 'look' of the video is better than what Sony gets out of their A7s/r series (except for dynamic range as no log profile). Most of the complaining about video seems really weird (big filesizes - you get those too shooting prores 4k with pro-cameras), no peaking (I turned that off when I used the a7s, it could peak even without focus being on point), inefficient codec (canon mjpeg 4k25p is the same filesize as prores 422 4k, also only 10% bigger than avc-intra at 4k, so please compare to other all-intra codecs because they have no motion artifacting). No flip-screen (you can use an ipad to stream the image into with wifi - you can also touch focus on it). The only real complaint is NO LOG (and rolling shutter in 4k) and you guys basically just skimmed over that part haha ;)
hmcindie and now log is there with an optional upgrade. The 5D mark iv is all in all an amazing camera for both stills and video. People just wanna keep trolling
Always candid and honest. Camerastore reviews are the ones I most look forward to for new products. Canon could have made an epic camera here but went a disappointingly conservative route. When the gh5 is released people are going to forget about this thing for video, imo. Shame.
That camera is way behind Nikon and Sony. We were all waiting for something a lot better and were very disappointed. Love your honesty. No holds barred!!!
You guys are the best! I think the new Sony a99ii is the only full frame camera with a flip around screen? If they made that a touch screen, it woulda been a home run.
Vegetable Police: Raw Vegan Division you know peoples do have choice they don't have to buy a Canon 5D Mark four but after all the negative comments most of them we are more than likely buy this product for one reason and one reason only reliability and that is why and the recent Olympias the majority of the professionals use Canon products because they know when the going gets rough Canon will more than likely pull them through ,you have a nice day.
What I still miss here in youtube, is the 5D- "ski maker" (from the software) , means where you can change the colors of mountains, the landscape, the sky and the moon. I saw such a thing in Thailand on a lap from a 5D owner. Was great.
We shot most of this episode on the Sigma 18-35mm as the portion of the sensor used during 4K recording is actually quite a bit smaller than APS-C. Jordan @ TCSTV
I never understand why everybody compares high-level dslrs from different brands to each other... As a Canon shooter I'm not going to sell all my Canon gear and buy Nikor lenses just because the Nikon cameras have slightly better DR and low light performance. It' just not worth it. I'd rather see a comparison to the 7D/6D/70D/700D, because that are the cameras you are going to upgrade from.
Sadly, that's actually the reason why Canon doesn't need to do anything noteworthy with their new cameras. But the comparison is still valid for people that haven't bought anything yet and need help to decide.
Flip-out screens can really help for still photos, too. In addition to the obvious on the ground type shots, they can function almost like a waist level finder, placing the camera at what is sometimes a much better height while allowing you to walk much easier (not all stooped down), and even to engage better with a subject/model. They're not just good for vloging, but for old-school technique as well. And the annoyance with a camera like the 5D not having one is only going to grow, as many of us try and use other cameras that have them more.
at 9:26 - do you have the labels swapped? From right to left, should it be MKIII, MKIV, D810? From what I am seeing on youtube the grain is heavy on the right, not as bad on the left. Though - sharpness is highest on right, lowest on left. perception - right?
Hey TCSTV, when do you the full review on the Fuji XT2? I really want to see the video capability especially in f-log and its autofocusing. It will be a huge thanks fom me since im comparing with the Sony A6300, hope to see it soon~~
canon 6D mark II seems to be crappy, what should I do now? Buy the 5D Mark IV and spend a lot more for a gain in resolution and dynamic range or get the original 6D for almost only a third of the price of the 5D and lose the dynamic range but keep a fairly the same base ISO performance? (currently own a 70D)
Spot on, no pun intended. Been a Canon 5D M II, III and now IV user but waiting for the Sony A9 and see how it performs with all my Canon L Glass and metabones. Stayed with Canon because of glass investment but may be time to switch if A9 works well with L glass. He stepped on Play-doh is my guess...
Yeah you are right... If it had the flippy screen, the ability to mount EF-S glass, a better 4k video codec and the 1/250th sec flash sync speed and ditch the AA filter over the sensor it would be the camera to have and pull the Sony A7RMK2 users that defected back into the fold. My guess is that Canon is either conceding the all-around pro-camera to competitors or they are working on a professional FF Mirrorless camera to up-end the market. The M5 seems to point to the capabilities of what canon can do if they want too.
@l. Willis, so why isn't Canon DSLR doomed for years, because everyone else has better specs there also ? :) Instead of that, Canon is just owning everyone, maybe because specs are for geeks and amateurs, and not those using this cameras :) Canon is the second in mirrorless market, before M5 :)
***** The only reason why Canon is still so much ahead in the DSLR game is because most people are trapped in the Canon Eco System. About 5-10 years ago, Canon made pretty good Cameras. All the people that invested in Canon glass can't switch because it's simply too expensive. But for mirrorless, you'll have to buy new glass anyway so many will leave Canon once the time has come. Believe me, I own 3 Canon bodies (2 aps-c, 1 fullframe) and the only reason I stick with Canon is because I have so much Canon glass that I can't use properly with other brands. I would switch to Sony any day if it wouldn't mean so spend so much money on new glass. That's why I'm so mad at Canon. I would like to buy a new body for better video, but I can't since all of their new bodies suck for video and the still improvments are so minor that it's not even worth to upgrade for stills...
When it comes to video Canon has drawn a line in the sand. Canon is saying if you want pro level video they have everything you need in their Cinema line which can use your EF glass. They are not going to cannibalized their cinema C100, C300 models. So yeah go buy the Sony with its 4k overheating issues, lack of proper glass and clunky menu system. After you have been frustrated there a while you will switch to the Panasonic GH4.
Have you ever used a Sony product? Even the end results I get when shooting with my RX100 (a 1 inch point and shoot) look better and sharper than the results I get with my Canon 70d. The codec withstands grading and color correction better and the newer Sony codecs with higher bitrates are even better. And that's what you and also Canon don't get: The Canon cinema line is way too expensive for what you're getting. If you have the budget of a hollywood movie and money doesn't matter, good for you. But in reality, all smaller productions with limited budget switch so Sony or Panasonic. Businesses have to make profit and fanboy logic has no place there. They think twice about investing huge sums in outdated hardware only because there is a Canon sticker on it. Canon drives semi professionals and indie film makers to the competition and not to it's cinema line. Even Philip Bloom thinks that Canon cameras are outdated and too expensive although he's a Canon admirerer.
I'm not looking for a debate, just want to point out something :) It looks like something went wrong with your high ISO comparison @9:24 You can clearly see from the reflections in the Leica's viewfinder that the 5D MK IV sample was differently lit (lighted?). Some of the light sources seen reflected in the other two samples are not present in the MK IV sample. I'm not sure if it made any difference to the result, but I there's enough of a difference to make me doubt.
My thoughts exactly. JIA FOTO is one of those specs guy. BTW the 5dM3 is one of the best cameras ever made and lets not forget that the sensor was the worst rated full frame sensor of all time (DXO Mark). Still I have a 5dm3 and love the quality of it.
Before I say anything: any full frame camera will allow any photographer to create awesome pictures. Plenty of photographers worked with slide film for decades, which had a margin of error of 1 stop, even a 5d1 will allow for more adjustment than that, so when I say that a sensor is "horrible" I mean it by modern standards. The 5d3 is a nice camera in everything but the sensor, the sensor is horrible, you can't pull shadows at all compared to any modern sensor, it suffers from the same noise amplification issues the 5d2 had, which got beaten by the Pentax K-5 (a crop camera) at the time, which still beats the 5d3 for the same reason...
Exceptional, thorough, realistic, accurate review. I own both a 5D3 and now 5D4 and have not been boweled over by the upgrade either, although there are a few nice additions (e.g. anti flicker, true auto iso, auto iso in manual mode with Ec, wider AF point coverage). A used 5D3 at half the price is much better value though. Rumor is the 6D2 will have an articulating LCD. Nitpick: In auto iso, why is minimum shutter speed selection limited to full stops (vs thirds)?
Watching this again 5 years later and I find it interesting that the A7RIi goes for less than half the price used as the Mark IV in the same condition. My best guess is that the dramatically better battery, more robust build, better weather sealing, better color science, and native canon glass was more than enough to lean the decision in Canons direction. I just decided to update to that generation of camera, with a used Mark iv with 6000 actuations, and I just felt more confident getting the 5div for twice the price, plus I have all those canon lenses. 5DSR was a real contender, but I really wanted a huge improvement over Mark ii autofocus, in addition to some pixels. The 4 split the difference. I hope my understanding was correct that the iv is a big step up even over the 5dsr.
Hey Jordan, I know this is an apples to oranges kind of question. But how would you rank video quality on the mark 4 vs something like the gx85, in sharpness and dynamic range (given neither of these cameras have a flat profile)? Thanks for this review!
Hi Guys, I got my 5D Mark 4 a week ago. Primary wedding shooter it work's for me so far. Can Jordan give us a workflow for how and what to encode the 4K MJPEG files in post for getting the best results. There is no updated source for this. Thanks
THANKS guys, love your reviews. I use a 6D with a 70D back up for my pro photography. I think I will wait for the 6D2 to come out before I decide what to buy. I do architecture and environmental portraiture, the 6D has done a fine job. In Austraia the 5D4 is $5000 that is just too much money. The 5D4 looks like a great camera, I love the touch screen of my 70d but why didn't they give us a flip out screen on the 5D4? I'm a bit unsure what to do now. Mark
Really great video as always :) But I think that you forget something really important, users from mk III and mk II need to have the look they like. I know a lot of pros that use mk II and mk III because of this "softness" and skin tones color. So if Canon change this for something more sharp, they loose completely their look and feel. I'm a Nikon user, and what make my style and my identity is the primary look Nikon gives me, with their sensors and their colors. I don't want the next D810 to be different just for competition. I don't buy a camera just because of it's specs list and I know tons of pros that prefer a good ergonomic and sturdy camera with the image look they want. What's make the difference for a pro, is identitiy and reliability of his work, not the specs of his camera. The mk III / mk II are legion in the wedding industry, and I think the Canon pro shooters are waiting since a long time. They will step up on this camera for sure. The autofocus in liveview is outstanding, something other brands are far from. It's 7fps for 30MP, nice viewfinder, good battery life (for stills) and it has what was missing before : intervallometer, auto iso and some others specs. Like you said, it's a pro stills camera, and pros don't only want great spec sheet. Try to cover a 12h photoreportage with a A7RII... And if video is your game, there are other possibilities on the market for pros (FS5, FS7, C100mkII). It's like in business, something that do good in a lot of activities is finally not excellent everywhere...
I agree on so many points, but here are some other thoughts to add in defense of the 5D mk IV. 1. My biggest complaint has been with it's 4k sensor crop, but the more I thought about it, I realized it puts it right in the super 35 ish area which is still a great place to be. Many $10K to $100K cameras use that sensor size with fantastic results. It makes it much better than the C100 mk ii for much less $$. 2. Lens selection, you're right, it's off to 3rd party lenses. May I suggest the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8? Should solve a lot of those issues. I also know that I'm almost always on either a photo OR video shoot, so I'll pack accordingly and basically stick to wider glass if I'm shooting video. 3. Sony is the main camera that it continuously gets compared to for video and on paper it's better sure. I use the A7sii most of the time for video right now. Here are the problems I have with it which are big reasons to go with the mk iv. A. Sony lens selection still sucks and this is the most important thing ever, having a beautiful look to the image has so much more to do with lenses than anything else. I use all my Canon lenses on it, but it's such a ghetto solution compared to having dedicated lenses. No one online seems to fault Sony for this MASSIVE oversight but blame Canon for being .5 EV worse in dynamic range. (I too wish it had 16 stops but we're stuck with being on par with the best cameras in the world) B. When shooting with my Sony, I feel like 1/2 to 1/4 of the shots look great color wise and the rest look off. It seems like the color science pushes too yellow sometimes, other times far too green and often times too blue. It's just not accurate or consistent. I don't find myself getting excited about the beauty of the image like I do with the colors out of a Canon camera. C. The ergonomics of the cameras (every sony ever made it seems like) are HORRIBLE. The mirror less cameras are too small to be comfortable to hold without a battery grip. 4. Sony shoots in 4:2:0 while Canon is shooting in 4:2:2. This is something everyone on the planet has faulted Canon for over the years and now they've added it. I agree heavily however that they should have added a video option for a higher compressed video codec. Most video shot on this camera will be shot with a 1 man crew (like myself more often than I'd like) where budget is tight and turnaround time is important. So tailoring the camera to someone other than who they want the camera to be purchased by seems like a large oversight. Crossing my fingers for a magic lantern fix. I really really really appreciate your unbiased review. Trying to decide between the mark iv, the 1dx MK II and the Fuji GFX 50S and this has helped.
Chris and Jordan in my opinion make the best camera reviews on youtube, by a mile! Regarding camera's, i come from the old school of 35mm film, so i have been shooting since the mid to late 80s, and while i do find camera's that have video capabilities a good feature, i do not see it as the be all and end all, simply because it is stills photography that is my primary concern, i mean, does anyone ever buy a camcorder to take stills? Obviously not, so why do folk still think stills camera's should perform the video to Spielbergs standard? It makes no sense to me, yet so many will bleat on and on that this camera does not record proper 4k internally or some other nonsense!
I have been using cameras for a long long time, the issue Canon has is that video is going to overtake stills as the most important shooting format and the corollary is that stills will just be extracted from video. Canon have done themselves no favours with this camera. The 'I only shoot stills photographer' will become a dying breed.
Photographers like me will argue that you can't make flash portraits with a videocamera but it would be incorrect. LED lights have so much power packed in so small footprint and good battery life that they're on the verge of being able to substitute flashes too. It's going to happen soon, just not yet.
I agree. I'm primarily interested in stills. For me the video features are an added feature that are not deal breakers. If and when I do video, I just use my iPhone. :) The Canon 5D IV is pure quality that will not let me down doing its primary job of of taking still photos.
Agree, Great Video,,,but from the experience I am going through with Nikon Customer Service which has been and is terrible as after 3 months they don't seem to know where my lens is let alone what is wrong with it, You guys should do a video on the Camera Company with the best Customer Service as now I am considering that to be a major factor on any substantial purchase....
The 4k crop example was very helpful. I’m more interested in the picture capabilities but at this price point I can see why people want it all. The dynamic range is a bit disappointing. Interesting you didn’t mention the memory card issue. I’m on the fence to buy now at a discount or wait for mark 5. I’m a bit concerned the industry is going mirrorless and dslr will be priced at a premium going forward.
Canon crop sensor user here. I wanted to upgrade to a full frame and I was thinking getting the 5DMIV. Should I look any other Canon's full frame? I'm not interested in changing brand since I have quite a few Canon glasses.
I can't tell if its me but is the color in 4k really popping out? I feel like compared to the mark 3 or c100 something is popping but can't put my finger or the tech spec on it.I also feel like the color is distracting from some detail that isn't there but not sure if its me.
how i can meke my videos look like them? is like a movie filter.. and many profesionals pictures look the same , i have the same camera in this video but after i teke one pic , the pic never look like the pics in all this tutorials videos ... please someone helpme and explainme how it work
Great review!!! Sadly Bit of a downer though ;-) Would you guys be willing to upload the raw files of the 5d4 and the d810 of the parked car somewhere like wetransfer of google drive? I would love to have a real life one to one comparison of the dr of the d810 and the 5d4 and pull the sliders myself. thanks!
What people in these reviews rarely say.. the D810 only has this insane DR because of its Lower native ISO of 64. At around ISO 200 the 5Dmk4/A7Rii/D810 have about exact the same DR.. and around ISO 400/800 the D810 even falls behind the sony and the Canon in DR.
I know, iso64 makes for a tonal quality that is very subtle. Something that works well for post if you work with fashion style lighting. The 5ds and 5d3r are more contrasty and punchy. I do find Canon colors more lively and more pleasing out of the box. For example very well suited for rich lifestyle type photo's. I find it very hard to get that more edgy somewhat sterile d8xx look to my mk3 images in post and wonder if the mk4 is as easy as a d810 but with better color. It has to do with pushing some of the darker tones more towards the midrange, this keeps the definition these shadow parts bring but makes them very fluid and open. The car scene demonstrates this capability well, the more tonal information is in there (noisefree) the better this workflow works. Less range means more abrupt fake hdr effect. It's hard to get with my current 5d3/5dsr. ps. i like large dynamic range at 64/100 iso because of urban scenes with contrasty shadow areas and bright sky - add to that skintones of models.
Great review btw guys , I do think the 5D Mark IV is a fantastic camera that keeps carrying the torch on this Canon Dynasty line worth getting if you are upgrading from a 5D MkII or a 1.6 crop factor and already have the Canon L glass, but if you (like me) have a 5D MarkIII and by all means know how to get the best out of that workhorse, unless you have money to burn not worth the extra $1,000.00 right now anyway...... After seeing a few reviews it is my humble opinion, you might have a different one and of course everybody is in tittle to
I agree with the summation on all counts. I own a 5D, 5DII AND 5DIII So I guess that I was the intended customer, but last year at this time I bought a Sony A7RII and was on pins and needles waiting to see what the Mk IV would be, I'm happy to say that I'm still very happy with my decision. (Your results may vary).
*\0/* I have a question that EVERY video on UA-cam on the 5D MkIV missed: What's the crop factor while shooting 1080p video? Is it the same as 4k (1.74)
Hello, have you guys tested mark 4 with sigma 35 1.4 art lens. I had a circle around the picture when I used sigma lens. is their any concern of using sigma lens in canon 5D mark 4
I'm not Jordan, but nothing beats Canon's dualpixel AF unfortunately. I wish it was untrue, since I'm not a Canon shooter. But it is. A6300 is ok-ish with its 4D AF. But nothing else is as smooth as DPAF... yet.
Nice Camera but... WTF did you step in???
David Trichel playdough.
David Trichel Looks like Play-Doh
looks like poop
haha
IT HAPPENS
It was clearly playdough as you saw him talking about it in the previous shot and it was also orange.
"it's tracking me perfectly" shooting at f16 on a wide angle... Anything with such a big dof just isn't tracking anymore, the focusing is pretty much infinity anyway.
lol, my thoughts exactly as I saw that. ":|
yes, they could have done a much better example to illustrate this. The small aperture wide angle clip was totally useless as demonstration!
This is my take after using the 5DMIV for the last couple of years:
Canon (5DMIV):
Pros:
- Best weather sealing (aside from the 1dxmii)
- Canon colour science is always top notch
- Best autofocus system
- C-Log
- Dual card slots for recording
- 4K video codec is a dream to colour correct and grade compared to all competitors (aside from RAW)
- Reliable
- Better battery life (almost 3x that of mirrorless competitors)
Cons:
- Lack of higher framerates in both 1080p and 4K
- MPEG is great for colouring, but needs a lot of storage
You'll find a lot of Sony mirrorless to have better low light performance (though it's really just a savior in poor lighting conditions in run-and-gun situations and is crippled by S-LOG's blocking issues).
It was a viable option in the 4k world on it's release, especially for the lower cost, but it's fallen behind at this point and is lower cost for a reason.
dude please at 2:37 there is dog poo on shoe OMG yuk
It's a metaphor for the Canon 5D Mk IV.
ewww
Was really distracting but i laughed for a minute there
pretty sure it's play-doh
Hahaha, some distracting dog poo
It's sad they need to put up a sign saying photography/videography is present. You're in public, you should not have an expectation of privacy. Photography isn't a crime.
CDNChaoZ I'm going out to shoot on a public sidewalk tomorrow for work and my employer is requiring that I get a release form from every person I shoot. Very sad.
In a playground, I think signage like that makes total sense.
How he imagines it do be done , realistically?
rolandsv8 I'm not sure. I find it way more invasive to run up to someone asking for them to sign something and give me their name/email, than just taking their photo.
It's just smart practice in a setting like that. Legality is really the least of the concerns there (though obviously still an important one).
No one talks about actually using the camera, how it feels in the hands, the UI, reliability etc. maybe my hands are too big but even just picking up a Sony body is rather uncomfortable for me
Do you still feel the same way now that the D850 is a thing?
I really don't understand this negativeness in the comments. The 5D IV is a wonderful camera - yes, it plays a bit of a catch up game, but now it's there (a bit weaker DR, much better video AF, etc.). Also it shoots natively on Canon glass, and glass is the most important aspect of professional photography.
Sigma mounts on everything. Problem solved.
The 5D IV is not a bad camera by any means, it's just a disappointing one. I don't think anyone would complain if it had the A99II's specs.
12:40 "The video being sharp now is nice..." definitely the best sentence of your review!
Philip
Dont they have service to remove the filter?
You guys make the best camera reviews on youtube.. great work once again
Thats my 2 cents
-S
Jordan's comment about the 5D Mark IV,s video shortcomings is by far the fairest of them all. Not too much of a hater nor a worshipper.
I can never understand why they don't put tilt-flip screens on pro bodies. That stuff is super useful!
Nikon already did, so only Canon is left not doing it.
I think it messes with the weather sealing :)
Not really, if it did, Nikon would not put one in their very high end pro cameras 😂
Ivan Phan The D500 and D750 right? It only tilts though, it doesn't flip fully like the D5500, which is a feature I really like to protect the screen when not in use.
K-1 has one too
I completely agree with your conclusion. Great job like always guys!
Looking forward to the a99 mk2 video!!!
When you talk like this you make me really curious about sony, even I always hated their digital look.
A nicely balanced review, Chris and Jordan. I appreciate the integrity you've brought to this review that more, ahem, passionate reviewers, tend to have lost.
Jordan, in what profile did you record this? I mean even if it doesn't have a proper flat profile, you can turn down the sharpness and contrast and grade it a little in post, right?
you mentioned flash sync speed changing. it was 200 on the 5dIII as well. 250 is on their crop sensors.
It is a nice upgrade and nice camera but too expensive but for video I'd prefer to get the cinema cameras...C300 etc.
if 5d mark 4 is for casual shooters then what is 6d and 1300d for? xD
Jon Hellier - I totally agree.
Here are some things you might find interesting:
Dual Pixel RAW contains extra dynamic Range: www.rawdigger.com/howtouse/canon-dual-pixel-mode-highlights-are-there
In the studio test shots on DPReview the 5D-IV has more highlight headroom than the D810 at their respective base ISO settings:
www.dropbox.com/s/4ztovpfhkm5yrnk/5D-IV%20highlight%20headroom.jpg?dl=0
According to DXO measurements the D810 only has better dynamic range than the 5D-IV at ISO 64 and ISO 100. At ISO 200 they are even but at every other ISO setting the 5D-IV has superior dynamic range:
www.dropbox.com/s/4xqemvle0nej1hj/5D-IV%20DR.jpg?dl=0
The 5D-IV DR advantage is clealy visible in shadows at high ISO:
www.dropbox.com/s/36ih2pwej6gfmle/5D-IV%20vs%20D810%20ISO%206400.jpg?dl=0
Sync speed on the 5D-III was also 1/200s, weak I know, but point is 5D-IV did not take a step backwards.
The back buttons customizations are fricken potent!!!!!!!!!! Watch this video to learn what you can actual do with the system:

Overall I think you guys did a good job of review. I only disagree on your assessment of stills image quality as can be seen by the mountain of evidence I posted above.
I appreciate how you guys took your time to get to know this Cam before reviewing it thoroughly, most other channels hurried up like posers to throw somethin half together on the first day of release. Respect
Thanks for another great episode guys!
Probably been mentioned somewhere... but the 5D3 also only had 1/200 flash sync :P
No holds barred!!!
what happend at 8:35 when the jelly fish passed by? automatic follow focus? Camera focused on background blurring Chris
TheCameraStoreTV, are you planning on releasing XT-2 review? Eager to see it!
3:00 did u step in dog poo?
Yes.
Damn you're into Photography too Jae? lol You have instagram my brotha?
5:01 Oh yes indeed, we need a full minute slow motion video of Chris prancing across a field, laughing like a maniac!
Another great review guys, and yes Jordan does need flip screen or those jeans will split down the middle if he bends over :)
You guys are the best! I think the new Sony a99ii is the only full frame camera with a flip around screen? If they made that a touch screen, it woulda been a home run.
you also have the pentax k1 and the new sony a99ii both fully articulated
Shield S.
K1 doesn't fully articulate to face you when filming yourself. I mentioned the a99ii in my post.
Vegetable Police: Raw Vegan Division I don't get why Sony won't put a touch screen on there upper end cameras!
Not just upper end, any camera with EVF
Vegetable Police: Raw Vegan Division you know peoples do have choice they don't have to buy a Canon 5D Mark four but after all the negative comments most of them we are more than likely buy this product for one reason and one reason only reliability and that is why and the recent Olympias the majority of the professionals use Canon products because they know when the going gets rough Canon will more than likely pull them through ,you have a nice day.
Nice review. Like many, been waiting a LONG time for this and all it does, from my point of view, is almost catch-up.
Good review. Ordered my 5D Mark IV after seeing this.
Canon - Delivering Yesterday's Camera Today
OK NOW you can do the FS5 extended video review extravaganza!
Thank you. Canceled my order. I appreciate the honesty.
always unbiased, i like your videos a lot .... keep up the good work ...
Guys! Review the Panasonic G85....You guys should get a review model somehow....love your videos!
Is there a way you can make the pictures MORE of a rectangle instead of having black on the sides? 3:34 And/or video? I NEED the right shape for that.
What I still miss here in youtube, is the 5D- "ski maker" (from the software) , means where you can change the colors of mountains, the landscape, the sky and the moon. I saw such a thing in Thailand on a lap from a 5D owner. Was great.
How does this Camera compare to the Pentax KII thinking of switching over. The 5D MarkIV is still on my radar
@5:15...Jordan I see no discernible 5DMk4 focus tracking going on in this clip.
will you promise me a review on the panasoic fz2000?
Nice video but... Did you record a part with the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 on the 5D IV ? It is a lens for APS-C no ? If we can do this it's perfect !
That tentacle joke though, subscribed immediately lol
What did you step in? @2:40 Looks like gum with dirt. (as an aside, nice review!)
I like the video quality and the fact that they shot all day with it to produce this video means its very very usable. The images look really clear.
Spot on, no pun intended. Been a Canon 5D M II, III and now IV user but waiting for the Sony A9 and see how it performs with all my Canon L Glass and metabones. Stayed with Canon because of glass investment but may be time to switch if A9 works well with L glass. He stepped on Play-doh is my guess...
video dynamic range doesn't differ from mk3? can u upload technicolor cinestyle profile there?
Yeah you are right... If it had the flippy screen, the ability to mount EF-S glass, a better 4k video codec and the 1/250th sec flash sync speed and ditch the AA filter over the sensor it would be the camera to have and pull the Sony A7RMK2 users that defected back into the fold. My guess is that Canon is either conceding the all-around pro-camera to competitors or they are working on a professional FF Mirrorless camera to up-end the market. The M5 seems to point to the capabilities of what canon can do if they want too.
If the M5 is near the best what Canon can do for mirrorless, then they will be doomed once mirrorless gets more popular.
Thanks! I hope you guys get your hands on the Panasonic G80/G81/G85 soon!
Nice review and it was great to meet you guys in Cologne!
You too Nick! Thanks for being so welcoming to us both!
Chris@TCSTV
Why there is no HDR video test :)? Also I am curious about the noise performance in video.
Yeah I hope that was playdough you stepped in LOL
Wow, what an amazing lens (135mm f2)! The camera is meh tho...overpriced and specs from 2013.
have you shot with the 5d mark 4?
The sensor is entirely new (finally)... there's nothing overpriced about this o_O wth you're on.
Nikhil Chandra I’m sure better then any Sony and ect
I would like to know what was the final file sizes that Jordan had filming this entire episode on it?
HI dear,
Thanks to this hands on, please can you tell me the is the image quality of this camera better than 5dsr???
Thanks
I love this camera...........because it helps me feel even more confident in my decisions to keep investing in my Nikon and Fuji gear.
Great review. Thx. You forgot to mention the memory card slots: UHS-1 for the next four years? Quite disappointing.
Canon is leading in the market, that's why it doesn't need a perfect update.
Mark
I love that you just tell it as it is. Too little too late.
Awesome review. Thanks for such a complete and detailed video about it!
Please do a Sony a99II review as soon as possible. Your reviews are awesome!
How did you use a sigma 18--35mm on a 5dmk4. This is very confusing - pls help. x
I SO AGREE with Chris ! Considereing the long wait and the competition Canon could have done better.
(I too wish it had 16 stops but we're stuck with being on par with the best cameras in the world)
Not just cuz I'm part Japanese LOL
PS: Best reviews on the net witty, straight to the point , and unbiased.
I appreciate the honesty. I'm going to keep using my iPhone.
Great review...playdough on your shoe is a classic!
I'm not interested in changing brand since I have quite a few Canon glasses.
you might as well get this one, I just bought one. I was also using a T5i
Very good review! Yet, I can't help but get distracted by that swinging "thing" on your shoe at 2:36 ...

I have a question that EVERY video on UA-cam on the 5D MkIV missed:
What's the crop factor while shooting 1080p video?
Is it the same as 4k (1.74)
Dean Stone There is no crop with 1080p, shoots full frame.
Hello, have you guys tested mark 4 with sigma 35 1.4 art lens.
I had a circle around the picture when I used sigma lens. is their any concern of using sigma lens in canon 5D mark 4
Jordan, if you had to pick the most accurate, pleasant FF AF in video mode, what would you pick: this, or the A7RII? Thx
I'm not Jordan, but nothing beats Canon's dualpixel AF unfortunately.
I wish it was untrue, since I'm not a Canon shooter. But it is.
A6300 is ok-ish with its 4D AF. But nothing else is as smooth as DPAF... yet.
Can you record in 60p in video on this camera? not for slow motion but normal video with audio?
