Sorry for mispronouncing Asterix & Obelix. The series isn't popular here in the States, so I should have researched it a bit more. I did pronounce "Porsche" correctly, right? ;)
Hehe I was like wtf 😄 Yeah porsche sounds correct, lot of english speaking ppl forget the E letter in the end 😊
Ahah had a lot of fun with the "Astrix" ^^
In France, where it's very well known, we pronounce "Ass-tey-rix" ;-)
Good video btw :-)
As a french guy, I must say your prounouncing is quite good.
MetalJesusRocks its ok... i forgive you ❤ just dont fucking do it again 💔
Relax. You're an American. Nothing you say is pronounced correctly. :)
I'm trying to program Zelda Ocarina of Time for the GBA in 3D! I uploaded a couple progress videos but I hope to add more. Programming 3d for the gba is not easy but is rewarding.
You didn't try Duke Nukem Advance? That one is notorious for good FPS on GBA. Ecks VS Sever 2 is a pretty notable example, too.
I loved that game, Im glad I bought it back in the day.
He sure can't cover every game, but he should have no problem covering every 3D GBA game. There really aren't that many.
I was thinking exactly the same. Duke Nukem Advance was an incredible treat. It blew my mind back when it was released.
Also DOOM 1, Serious Sam Advance, and Wolfenstein 3D. One that I'm not sure about is LEGO Racers 2, probably just another sprite-based kart racer.
Vid was still good though, and showed me some gems.
Right up my alley! Love hardware pushers.
What's up Nintendrew!
Waiting in line for a SNES Classic 😂
Thanks, Chris!
Or get a SNES Emulator on your computer! Tada!
Best of luck Nintendrew! Despite a reservation, I wasn't able to grab one in my country - they are sold out nationwide! Hope you are more lucky.
Ecks vs Sever was reeeeally good. That Aestrix game is insane though. Could pass for a DS game.
RGT 85 amazing
RGT 85 Could pass for a PS1 game.
could pass for a PS4 game
no could pass for a N64 game
Take a look at STREET RACING SYNDICATE !!!
Or 007 Nightfire.
1:54 is a face only suited for nightmares.
I see this face every night…I revisit this video to always make sure it stays.
Asterix & Obelix looks incredible!
You mean Astrik & Obilisk?
It is a real good game.
dAda313 lol I caught that too. Kinda cringey
Krock I need it, not many listings for it on Ebay though :/
*Asstrick & Obelisk
Can't believe Super Monkey Ball Jr. wasn't on this list! That was an incredble 3D game on the GBA. Not only was it 3D, there were a ton of levels and minigames to play, making it highly replayable.
Quad Desert Fury wasn't a very fleshed-out game, but it did have a decent open world to race an ATV in, and the framerate wasn't terrible.
That game blew my MIND back in the day! It was like having the GCN game in my pocket! So much content, so great looking visually, and it actually played super great! (unlike most of the 3D games for GBA)
Good stuff! Another UA-camr I watch, minimme, has done a TON of videos like this on the games that pushed the GBA's boundaries, as well as DS and PSP games as well - if anybody's looking for more GBA 3D videos, give him a look!
It's like 3D graphics and pixel art at the same time! :)
So true!
Asterik and Obelisk LOL
zolwikwkurwik what's so funny tho
* & obelisk
Every character from the series that's from goul has name ending with an x and you need to pronounce it
Asterix and Obelix is pronounced Astericks and Obelicks, not Asterik and Obelisk.
mispronouncing aside, the comic book series is amazing
Love these kinds of videos. It's awesome to see what old consoles can do and how different ports hold up.
This needs a part 2. Very cool topic but ya missed a lot of fairly decent games
Love seeing gba content! Great video
I'm almost sure it's me who hinted you to the french 3d gba games (asterix, stuntman...) perhaps even drome racers! I owned them all and still collect gba games. Thank you for your video!
Thank you for the link I was just watching your Game Boy advanced collection video
Not sure if it’s a true 3D game but I was blown away back in the day with Wing Commander Prophecy on the GBA. Took a huge PC port and managed to make something playable!
asterix is probably the only game i'll check out, being a fan of the various arcade and console releases. thanks for sharing!
Asterick and Obelisk made my day! love you guys..greetings from Germany
Great video - GBA is one of my all-time favorite systems... but the real reason I'm commenting is because while I normally watch your videos on a PC with headphones, I watched this last night on my Xbox One, and my one-year old was so enraptured by your opening music he stopped playing with his toys, stared at the screen and started dancing.
The transition between Medal of Honor and Tony Hawk scared the shit out of me, lol. Love it!
I'm not someone that cares about graphics ... but that Medal of Honor game looks bad even for the time.
I couldn't care less
Yay! I can watch a new video after getting back from school on my birthday! It's like a dream...
FINALLY! waiting for this since you first announced it!
Man your missing V-Rally 3, i preferred it over the console versions. Easily the best racer on the GBA.
Playing through this one now, the fact that it has a cockpit view is amazing
Yes! I had it at the time, and I thought it would easily pass as an early PS1 game or something on the 3DO.
you missed out on the GBA port of Top Gear Rally. Really impressive for its time.
GBA is my favorite handheld of all time (the SP of course). So many games that are from $1-$50 not many consoles with that much of a library at those low costs. Awesome video metal Jesus!
Absolutely love your channel. Could you one day do a video on your personal top 5 must own gaming consoles? I think a video like that would be perfect!
I love your GBA vids. The GBA is my favorite retro system.
GBA is life. Best handheld ever.
No.
Hearing the GBA being called retro makes me feel so old.
Asterisk & Obelisk is my fav
9:07 Asterk & Obelisk is a very rare game, Asterix & Obelix games are much easier to find though
Cynical Possum *Asteric and Obelisk
I lol'd!
Oh man, i completely forgot about Star X! I agree with what you said about the over-sensitive controls, but i think, like StarFox 64, that game will always hold a special place in my heart. Thanks for another great video!
Very nice, i was waiting for this video :D
Interesting video. Good shit.
Can you do a part two? I enjoy your videos and I noticed you missed some really good 3D games like Driv3r, hot wheels stunt track (my favorite 3D racer on the system) Duke Nuken Advance and the Ecks vs Sever series. I'm sure there are many more too, (like the garbage Serious Sam game) but these were all fun and impressive games on the gba.
Awesome Video. I remember enjoying GBA Serious Sam back in the day.. didn't look amazing, but it was fun
Thanks for bringing light to these games. I never gave much thought to 3d gba...
There's also Serious Sam Advance & Duke Nukem Advance.
Iridion 3d and 3d 2 were pretty good 3d shooters for the GBA
They're both 2D though, but with pre-rendered graphics, kinda like Donkey Kong Country, except more cleverly-used...
Iridion II is pretty great though, especially the soundtrack!
I live both, great games
this is an interesting category of games to cover. thanks!
I watch my YT videos in a tiny popout that Opera has built in feature for, and the graphics actually look fair to good at that size. Cool video. Thanks!
Ecks vs Sever, ice nine, driver 3 are good examples of 3d games on the gba
All these games look like LowSpecGamer mods to get them to run on crappy PCs lol
Crazelord91 they are good for on the go. Even though they look like dogshit
Thanks Metal Jesus for sharing these amazing games!
Some of these I have in my collection. Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed is definitely one of my favorite 3D GBA games that I own. I'm glad you like it so much Metal Jesus!
Game Boy Advance is sooooo awesome ! One of the greatest handheld console ever
nothing on Ecks Vs Sever 1 and 2? Both of them are pretty cool 3D games on the GBA.
Your video brought back some great memories 🤗
Been waiting for this video! Asterix and Obelix is good fun, and Star X looks awesome.
You should definitely try Max Payne for the GBA, and Iridon 3D is a super hard and fun one too.
Top Gear Rally looks Really Good on the Gba
V-rally 3 is amazing!
Thanks for another great review MetalJesusRocks. I was lucky enough to own all of the titles you covered in this review, and I think your assessment of each game was spot on.Another 3D GBA title that I really liked was Duke 3D Advance. Completely different levels than the PC game that everyone knows and loves, but still very fun!
I had no idea about any of these games. I have 007 Nightfire for Gamecube and was astonished to see it running in any fashion on the GBA. Thanks for bringing these to light!
On a different note, with the recent announcement of Nintendo ending the Wii Shop Channel early next year, do you have any plans on doing one last Hidden Gems video on either the Wii's Virtual Console or Wiiware library? I'm sure many of us are prepping for one last shopping spree and would love hearing your recommendations.
Thanks again for all the great content! Always a treat to come home and catch up with your latest finds.
Do a shot everytime MJ says "impressive"... youll be floored in no time 😁
*WARNING:* Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, speedrun Yoshi’s Island, rocket jump in Quake and may cause rickets. Or at least, that’s what I heard.
What about DRIV3R for the GBA?
I have it and didnt really like it.
sean91499 like GTA 😀 yeah GBA have more 3d games 😁
Yeah Driver 2, Driv3r, and that 70's themed Driver game were all super impressive visually for the GBA. The gameplay definitely doesn't hold up well though.
Would of been cool of rockstar could of done something 3d like what driver did for the gba.
I didn't think about the Driver series....I gotta keep my eyes open for that! Thanks for the reminder!
Another hit from the mighty metal Jesus!
Very nice episode !!!
Top Gear rally
V3 Rally racing
Good old MJR doing great review of games and systems. You are THE MAN! So much information!
Great video! Love the shirt too
Wow, bringing back memories with that Crazy Taxi game
You bring up a point that I think you need to address someday. You've not covered sports games at all really, that I'm aware of anyways. How about a sports games hidden gems video?
feethebunny Probably a good plan. There are plenty of those just for the NES alone.
Nice, he pronouced PORSCHE pretty well. :)
I learned that from Top Gear UK... same with "al-loo-min-eee-um" :)
He just pronounced it with the original language's (German) dictation applied. It annoys me when people are sticklers about pronouncing things "correctly" when really they are asking them to pronounce the name using the dictation from the language of the country of origin. I refuse to pronounce the country of Chile as "chee-lay". I will always say "chill-lee". Because I speak American English. I will pronounce the word with its established American English pronunciation; not the Spanish one. I don't care if "Chile is a food." English has homonyms galore (sound the same but have different meanings). Among all those, why did everyone decide that the word "Chile" is a problem? And that we HAVE to pronounce "Chile" (the country) with a Spanish dictation? Why must "Porsche" be pronounced with a German dictation? If we have to say "Porsche-UH", then we also have to say the German dictations of Volkswagon ("Folks-Vagon") and BMW ("Bey-em-vey").
I havent been sticklers about anything. :) Though i wouldn't agree with you. It is a proper name... (No need for you to write a second book about your opinion) But i cant resist pointing out, that you insist on using your "american-english" which is the same thing that annoys you about other people underlining the "correct" pronounciation.... :)
cool video tech talk metal jesus rocks
Gameboy and all of it's many iterations is one of the biggest chunks of my collection. A couple other games that could be considered GBA 3D games were F14 Tomcat, and Star Wars Flight of The Falcon.
Did you really say "Obelisk" instead if Obelix? xD
Dumblepete did I mispronounce it? My bad. Sorry
One is a big stone totem, the other the famous Asterix character :) .. they named Obélix after that word so it's all good.
BTW that game is definitely impressive for the GBA
I'm not sure if it's in your collection or not, but Wing Commander: Prophecy has a GBA port that's really good! I think you can get a copy on Amazon. At least, that's where I got my 2 copies.
Da12thKind if you look at my comment I mentioned a game called smashing drive. It used the same game engine, which was the most impressive engine on the gba, and was able to do things that the gba honestly shouldn't have been capable of.
I have both Wing Commander and Smashing Drive, truly impressive games from a hardware standpoint, too bad they don't play as well as they look. Figuring out what is shooting at you in Wing Commander is way too hard, and the escort missions are just pure evil, even by escort mission standards! Smashing Drive's problem is that the driving physics are a bit boring, though I guess that is still better than them just being bad. I still think the GBA game with the best balance of amazing 3D graphics and game play is Top Gear Rally.
Awesome new video MJR, especially with the GBA being one of my favourite consoles (for-)ever!
Awesome video! Doom 2 looks fantastic :D
Better than the SNES anyway.
Lol.
well the specs are a bit better than the SNES
@@apispraetorium3275
Lol what?
The GBA is way more powerful than the SNES in every area but sound.
Dude Nukem
Just picked up Nightfire. Been looking for a Goldeneye game for GB Advance - THANKS!
Love this kind of videos about the Gameboy family! One game I would recommend is Super Monkey Ball Jr. I also think Need for Speed Underground 2 was a good effort.
My eyes my eyes!
Michael Lewis 16bit 144p in all its glory!
ThexXxXxOLOxXxXx Actually the Game boy Advance is 32 bit.
No actually its 16bit 160p, we're talking display here no cpu architecture.
Actually, it's 15-bit.
Everything looks like Minecraft
Alexander Bjerkvik well technically since the GBA was first, that means Minecraft looks like eveything else instead of everything looking like Minecraft
Alexander Bjerkvik GBA games are so much better than Minecraft...
Mujtaba Ibrahim nope
cristoforo colombo yep
I’m a cringy 11-year-old without a PS4,Xbox one,or Nintendo switch cuz meh ded is cheeeeeeeeeaap.
MetalJesusRocks I'm from Brazil, and I need to mention that you complete forgot the most impressive 3D GBA game: V-Rally 3 from Atari enterprise! The inside car view it's fluid, clean and beautiful. Besides, it's pretty funny to play. If you read my comment, and check it out, I'll bet that V-Rally 3 will be on every top list of yours.
You should try Grunty´s Revenge! I love that game so much. It´s also a game that a lot of Banjo Kazooie fans don´t even realise exist.
Dislike City
Nice to see a video thats not a Snes Mini unboxing video today
Thanks Jason for a great video. The running time is good and the games you talk about all get the same fair time. How about talking about some old movies ? I know you have done one video and it was great. Greetings from Sweden.
Hey MJR nice video. I learned about a few interesting games I hadn't heard of. I have Doom (not 2, it is expensive) and Duke Nukem 3D for the GBA, and I like them both a lot...Doom is dumbed down, unlike Doom 2, but is still fun. Duke lacks music if i recall correctly but played well enough and was fun enough for me to complete it.
Very impressive though! Great video!
So glad you made this video. I don't care for 3D on the GBA but getting some recommendations is awesome anyway.
I find it interesting that the GBA seems to have the same perspective correction issue that the PS1 had. I didn't even know there were this many 3D polygonal titles on the GBA until today. The only one I previously knew of was the Super Monkey Ball port. Great video.
Edit: I also noticed the GBA uses a mesh for transparencies and shadows rather than actual transparencies like the PS1. The Saturn used the same technique. I guess one could say as far as 3D is concerned it has the less desirable traits of both the PS1 and Saturn hardware, lol. Granted the mesh transparencies hardly matter on a tiny portable screen however.
Nice video dude !
5:03 I'm like "WOW THOSE GRAPHICS ARE GREAT!"
Then I hear "The results are kinda mixed" "Whoaaat?"
007 Nightfire was great on PC and console. Have great memories playing it online and with friends.
Drone Racer looks interesting. Lego Racers was one of my favorite games growing up. I'll check it out. :D
Sonic Battle has 3D battlefields and is a fairly competent fighting game, for what it is. Story mode lets you customize your own fighter's moves and it is criminal that they never made a sequel. Try it out.
Hey, you said Porsche correctly!! Good job, that seems to be a rare thing these days.
+Brandon Baker I watch a lot of Top Gear UK :)
I think it has already been mentioned but V-Rally was one of the best racers on the GBA. It was made by the French developers of Asterix & Obelix XXL by the way. I think you should talk about developers a little more, since it seems that several games in the video are made by the same teams...
TRON: Killer App has a 3D game mode where you drive tanks around in the world of TRON. The rest of the game is isometric but those tank levels were not bad. Check it out.
That's amazing. I didn't even know these existed.
Nice video like the games you showed me gameboy handhelds back then were ok some times haha i love my ps vita
I currently program for the GBA! I'm going to make a custom GBA raycaster game for you! :)
Was happy to see dark arena on here. I remember being impressed when I picked the game up out on a whim.
Dig the t-shirt! Ground Control is an awesome place!
Great video, awesome topic
Good recommendations, I will definitely look for them.
Take a shot every time Metal Jesus says "on the GameBoy Advance"
I played a lot of Dragon Ball Z Taiketsu on the GBA. That was a mix of 3D character models with 2D backgrounds. Very fun game, hard controls tho at first
