  • This is a short anecdote about by experience of buying a used Sony ZV-E10 in Japan, where the prices were amazingly cheap while the quality of used gear was pristine. I was ecstatic until I realized one unresolvable problem after I got home.

The whole video could be 1 minute long. It takes you forever to say that Japanese cameras, for the domestic market, where people speak Japanese, have the Japanese language installed by default, and you can't change it.

I wrote the same reply to a similar comment: True. In the future I'll tell people who want to skip to the conclusion to skip to that chapter / timecode. Or maybe I should have titled the video differently. Something like "My Experience Buying a Used Camera in Japan - with an unpleasant realization at the end"? I didn't mean to create clickbait. I wanted to share my experience in Japan, but I understand if the title may have been misleading.

Love map camera, my go-to in Tokyo for used equipment. I had the same issue when my younger daughter (who speaks Japanese) bought me a Lumix GF2 new (back in the day) with the 14mm f2.5 lens for less than what the 14mm f2.5 lens cost here in Germany. She used it while she was there and never noticed that there are no language choices. I learned how to use it nonetheless by putting the English language manual on my phone and learning some Japanese writing. :-) Oh, and Olympus does NOT have this issue. My OM-1.1 works just fine for languages...

Thats interesting. I just got back from Japan and Korea and went to a lot of camera stores. Another thing about Japan is it's almost impossible to find 3rd party Sony batteries and the genuine batteries are expensive. Korea was much cheaper and I ended up buying a used Sony A7C from Nandaemun Market in Korea and luckily had no problem with the English menu. Great place for used cameras. Well at least you read Japanese. Still a killer camera!

Honestly, I only went to Map Camera, but a Google Maps search showed very many used camera stores. As for Map Camera, I was limited on time and was looking specifically for a ZV-E10 body so I'm sorry I didn't pay too much attention to the lenses. BUT I can say that I did see a LOT of them on display. And based on how meticulous they are in taking note of defects, I can only assume that their used lenses are probably very good. My assumption is that if they were to sell a lens with a defect that causes actual operational problems, I think such a product would be sold dirt cheap. Or maybe they wouldn't accept such a product to begin with. Again, that's just my assumption.

I suggest, try the language hack to unlock all languages. It's way more convenient than using a smartphone to translate the menus.

Thank you very much for the warning. Wish I came to this post before considering camera purchases from Japan stores. I recently paid full price for an "on display" Canon G5 X II camera from a Japanese store on Ebay (return option available). It came with Japanese language menu but I was able to change to English by reading the manual that came with it. One thing that surprised me was that the language screen on the G5x showed only 2 options: Japanese and English. I checked the Canon SX720 HS I bought from online store in Hong Kong and find many languages available on it. So it seems cameras of many brands made and SOLD in in Japan is for Japanese people.

Wow, good info. One question about the mapcamera store. I live in Argentina and I am willing to buy from their online store. But I don't see any option to know about the shutter count of the cameras. Do you know if that info is something they can give you if someone ask it?

    • @keisugimoto570
      @keisugimoto570  5 місяців тому

Sorry for the late reply. I’m not sure about that but…. Considering the amount of data MapCamera had in their inventory database I wouldn’t be surprised if they did have that info, but… I don’t see it on their website. I see that on their website, they only rank their used gear into 6 categories which roughly translate to:
      “Just like new”
      “Beautiful”
      “Good”
      “Normal”
      “Slight issue”
      “Junk”
Each category has explanations which are a little too long to translate here. I realize that the ZV-E10 I bought was ranked as “beautiful”. I haven’t been able to figure out how it is any inferior to a “just like new” product.

More info about this. all Japanese branded cameras starting from Sony, Panasonic, casio, nikon are Japanese only cameras. I also got a Nex5 and it was only Japanese and i had to use some kind of patch program on the firmware to bypass the language option to open up the multi language which i did by my own risk cause u can brick the firmware if not done correctly and not all models can do it thats the problem. so if anyone wanna get cheap used camera in japan i would say get Olympus or some other branded camera which is not Japanese based or check if its only Japanese region camera.the fact its cheap cause its only Japanese region locked that is why, i also got the olympus em5 used from japan and the quality is really good shutter count was 38k only hopefully wont have to worry much as its a mirrorless. other then language lock system all used Japanese cameras are way way... more better quality in used section really good condition for cheap price.

My story: bought an A7ii here in Japan and put one of those language patches on it (forgot the name) and was happy with it for the last 5 years. But, last year I put my EF 50mm 2,5 macro on it (with Sigma mc-21) and my camera just kind of when a bit nuts. The back dial and button didn`t work anymore, so I send it to Sony to ask for a repair quote... I got a very rude (for Japanese standards that is) reply that because it had non Sony approved software on it (which they claimed broke the thing - yeah sure after not breaking the thing for over 5 years!?) they did not want to repair it!!! WTF!?!? I mean, it is not that it was still in warranty or anything like that, and I was of course not expecting them to do it for free, but NO JOY, they bluntly refused to touch it! In the end, my Japanese wife got involved and the `compromise` they suggested was that if I removed the `illegal` language patch from the camera they would be willing to fix it... Well, try to get anything going with your camera with access to the menu and such (back dial and button don`t work anymore, remember). SO, long story short, I am being punished by Sony for being a dumb `gaijin` (foreigner) living in Japan who doesn`t read all the Kanji... WELL SHITsurei shimashita Sony!

As far as I know, the answer is no. (Maybe there are unapproved hacks out there). This is a deliberate choice Sony is making in order to use market segregation to control their products distribution. So unless Sony changes their strategy I don’t think this will change - thus there will be no software to download to “fix” this issue.
