James Hetfield's Lightning Guitar Tone - Marshall JCM 800 + Tube Screamer

- I wanted to see how the 800 performs with an Ibanez TS-9 dialling James Heffield's guitar tone from the classic, Ride the Lightning.
I added the Master Effects PMEQ to simulate some eq in the recording console, Fortin Zuul+ noise gate and Empress Effects Reverb to add the ambience.
The recording is done silently using the Two Notes Torpedo Captor X so the parrots aren't blown away.

Please be aware these recordings are carried out silently with no live cabinet in the room deafening my birds. I say it in the videos and state it in the description but I still get complaints about animal cruelty 🥲
I got you man. Haters are gonna hate. I've watched you long enough to know you're good to the birds. Awesome tones as always. Been looking forward to this one since you bought the same amp i have now.
You Rock!!
I asked how big a bird cage should be, turns our about 55 acres.
Needs to be pinned so the Karens can find something else to be offended by.
@@Ottophil 😅
Nailed the tones as usual. What does this guy have that the rest of us don't? He doesn't even use the exact gear from these albums.
Good ears cannot be substituted for gear.
He’s spends the time doing it. You can too. I’m sure it’s not easy.
Lots of passion for the music and a great ear.
A parrot
Handtone. Adjustments, more handtone.
Love the ride the lightning tone and James' awesome barking vocals
I have always wondered how the Ride the Lightning album would have sounded guitar wise if their gear had not gotten stolen? Would they have even traveled over to Europe to record RTL at all? From what I remember, Kirk and James recorded both their guitar parts through a stock JCM 800? As always you did an awesome job capturing the RTL tone with the JCM 800. Now we need a stereo amp set up with DSL20 and the JCM 800 lol!!
🤘🤘🤘🤘
I’ve read that it was the guitar player from Mercyful Fates amp as James tried a bunch that were available in Denmark and that one sounded the best to him
They found an amp similar to that during the Black Album James said. It was almost exactly the same if not the exact same.
I've seen pictures alleged to be from the RTL recording session and there's a JMP 2203 With a tube screamer, Ibanez stereo box, and what look to be a couple TC electronics pedals on top of it. No idea what everything was set up for but as far as i know the jmp2203 and jcm800 are practically the same tone wise.
@@morningstar3188 They are practically the same on paper but they do sound a bit different. I've always preferred the JMP 2203.
Little Bird fighting for dear life 💀💀
big parrot is a real bully man
Big green takes no prisoners...
No, it's their version of a moshpit.
Stoked to see you still making quality material. Cheers!!
Well, you nailed it as usual. Great job dude! 👍💪
That was spot on! Excellent job! I have always loved that guitar tone from Ride The Lightning and you nailed it! Keep up the good work!!
New to the channel, came across it from searching different tones and lead me to the Master Effects web page. Thats where i saw you demonstrating the Puppet Master eq pedal. This is now my favorite UA-cam channel. Totally blown away by your knowledge and playing skill. Just wanted to say thank you for what you do. 🤘🤘🤘
Just signed on...man you are so humble in your videos! The tones with the TS9 sound great in my Audio Technica headphones. Great playing and great tips for the Hetfield sound....thanks for this! Cheers!
Sounds great, and the examples with the different distortion pedals was very interesting to hear!
FANTASTIC! Sure sounds like you’re all over those tones! Great work
Good job! I used Celestion G12-65 in my cab, like Hetfield used at the time. With the Marshall it’s fantastic!
heyyy im so glad to see you got a SC20. its pricey but a killer amp, definitly just as great as the 100w version. absolutely nails jame's old lightning tone.
Thats an awesome tone man! Love it, keep rocking buddy!
Sounds really clear and good! I thought the Ibanez 808 sounded the tightest/sharpest, but the mudkiller had the most warm saturation. I'd probably go with the Ibanez
Nice work🤘. Your green parrot ties in nicely with the Ibanez Tube Screamer, the green skateboard and the 333 Dime Slime. The yellowish parrot ties in with the Boss SD-1 and the Black & Yellow ESP Alexi Laiho signature and to a lesser extent the RR Jackson. Don't know if you or anyone has noticed. Nice tone and nice colour coordinating🤘🤘
Great to have you back!
Great job as always my man!
Awesome tones yet again man. What I would love to see is you doing a thrash rhythm and lead tone using the DSL and basic pedals. Something that can be used in a live cover band situation or even at home jamming to Metallica songs. Keep up the good work man👍
Amazing, as always! You Rock!!
Fantastic video - great guidance - many thanks!
Just discovered your channel - really love your content. Just wanted to leave a note 💪🙌
This upload made my day !
Great sounds... Perfect!
Ollie and Mango fighting for the perch :)
Phenomenal man. Awesome job.
Awesome, and the birds are super entertaining. Maybe they need a dedicated window in the corner so they are always on screen. Non-stop antics.
How about doing a video Lamb on how you 'hear' tone and then dial it in so impossibly accurately!
We love you LambChopper!
we need to see the evh tones brother great vid!
Fantastic job as usual. Oh, also long beard looks nice on you man, cheers!
Very cool, man... Perfect tone.
Mate, what a great collection of gear you have. Love the channel. Cheers!
Sounds great! It really does sound much like RTL tone, killer
Haha love the old Mike Vallely deck on the wall, used to have one. 🤘
I'm bummed that you didn't play the "Die, by my hand" riff. Great video as always \m/
lamb!! such a legend!!! you arr
sounds sick as always
perfect tone!!!
Your birds are beautiful as well as your setup ❤
I love how the parrots are just chill and like hell yea \m/ \m/
That’s a great tone man by the way your the tone master man 🤘Meanwhile in the background the birds are fighting😂
It's literally the Dime Slime 333 (Green Parrot) vs the Yellow/Black ESP Alexi Laiho (Yellow Parrot) 😂🤣😆😁
I had a DSL-15(6L6 tubes), it sounded great with a SD-1 in front.
Nialed it as always!! You should try to capture these tones with Tonex 🙂
thaths what i wanted to see on my feed!!
Epic as usual!
Great vid, love this! 🤘🤘🤘🤘 Vibez Dude !!!
That's about as close to the album tone as anyone is gonna get. Well done!
Good to see you back making videos again. Any chance you’d do a video on the Garage Days Re-Revisted guitar tone? I absolutely love that 5.98 EP and the raw tone. Cheers brother.
I second that one too!! I was stoked when that EP came out because the bass was pretty massive on the EP (Crash Course especially). I think we were all expecting that kind of bass on AJFA, and well……….it just didn’t happen that way lol.
I was also surprised they didn’t add Breadfan and the Prince on the EP (I guess it wouldn’t have been an EP then either lol)? I have the MOP and AJFA special editions and hearing Breadfan raw is pretty awesome!! I would love to hear you dial in the rhythm and lead tones for The Wait though!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
@@johnstewart7619 such a great EP, bread fan and The Prince are awesome. I had them on a 12” import of Harvester of Sorrow I picked up back in the day. I played that 5.98 Ep in my Walkman cassette player in high school so much it broke and I had to splice to back together multiple times lol 😂. Loved that it had the same thing on both sides. Yes, it had great bass and the production, sounded awesome to my ears, despite being “not very produced by Metallica” lol 😂 👊👊
@@grindcoreblues7517 they made those songs their own. It’s amazing! James’ voice actually sounds better to me than he did in AJFA
I got a JCM 2000 DSL with a SD1, I love it and feel like it's all I need.
He'll, yea!!!
James amp was a Super lead Modded by Jose Arrendondo. Magic sauce
Sounds identical to the record. Amazing
I really liked the Mud Killer tone! 🤘
RTL is my favorite guitar tone of all time. That metallic (!) sound is what metal ought to be. I think the key is the delay/reverb along with the phasing that happens with the double-tracking
Awesome video man if you have the time could you maybe look into the Mastodon Levaithan tone i woud like to know how close you could get
Awesome Video! I try to design my gain stage circuit to hit the front end of the 800 to get a similar sound.
Nice work 🤟
Could you do another black album tone video where you slave your jcm 800 into your mesa ? I think you’d get some gnarly tones out of that. Great video like always !
Great content!!
Your videos are completely amazing. Thank you for all your advice and information.
PLEASE COVER OVERKILL YEARS OF DECAY.....BOBBY'S GREATEST WORK !!!!!!
Agreed!
Great tone and absolute classic album.
A lot of it reminds me of the Sfsgsw tone, no surprise since both were hot guitars with drives into jcm800s...and of course the Mustianeisms on Metallicas first two records
love that eclectus parrot!
The mxr wylde overdrive and the mud killer sound really good I've been using the Boss sd-1 but think I might add a couple of different options to the pedal board, I thought the mxr 10band eq did a pretty decent job obviously nowhere near the parametric EQ but still not bad man!
Great tone.
My favorite Jacksonmodel... the King V
Just cant get anymore metal than that
I have a '79 2303 Marshall and while an sd-1 is a match made in heaven for it, put a screamer in front and it just IS lightning 🤘👍
Awesome man
Loving how fat it sounds with the MXR
And that Mud Killer is awesome too
Fantastic
Nice video and tone Lambchopper, but I think you would get a lot closer to the RTL guitar sound by using an IR of Celestion G12 65 speakers instead of the V30 equipped Mustaine cab in your Two Notes Torpedo unit. I think the specific cab / speaker combo used is responsible for a lot of the guitar sound we hear on these classic records. Apparently, G12 65’s were what Hetfield used on the album (correct me if I’m wrong). I bought an IR pack of this speaker type from the Celestion website and it certainly gives a very RTL vibe when I use them with my amp sim and dial in a thrash sound. I think Ownhammer also came out with an IR pack featuring G12 65’s too. Definitely worth checking out!
They may have used 65's, but I bought a 1960a cab a while back with g12t75's in it, and every amp I play through it sounds like instant Metallica to me. I do think 65's sound a bit better, though.
Yes!!! The beard is back
Alex Skolnick was the first to talk about throwing the ts9 in front. Guitar world.
Hey mate , any chance of doing a video where you go more in depth with the captor x and show us how you go about making your cab patches ?
Sure man, it’s a fantastic piece of gear
LAMPCHOPP, You can see studio pictures of Ride the Lightning James Heffield using an orange Ibanez 850 overdrive pedal also. You should get this pedal because it might be asymetrical clipping overdrive and i think its mid scooped
Killer playing and tone as usual, mate. how do you rate the 'feel' of the SC against the DSL? I was sold on the DSL but then read how the SC feels much more organic and inspiring?!
I’d say that’s a pretty good description. Totally agree.
That is bang on. Fucking awesome tone.
Another great video but one correction James was still only using his original white Flying V. No EMG's yet. He wouldn't get the Jackson V till 1985.
I still can’t believe more people aren’t using the 20 watt 800s they have about gotten too expensive now but when they first came out and you could get them for around 1000, I nearly got one of the stealth versions but wound up with the dsl20 because I wanted two channels even though it’s hard to actually use the dsl20 as a two channel amp lol. The JCM800 does the things we all wanted the JCM900 to do when it came out.
I’m an SD1 man myself when you kicked it on it’s like yeah there it is! I bet an OCD would sound killer through it too since it really just gives you more of what’s already there.
I own a fulltone OCD it sounds killer for thrash metal through my solid state amp I'm trying to save up for a used 6505
@@Wheresthepepsibismol I own a SD1 and an OCD and the OCD sounds great in front of a Marshall it’s more refined and fuller and less cocked wah than the SD1
hey @ lambchopper678 you should try using two mics on all your setups because one mic sounds super thin, and i think you would benifit from using two mics, even if you dont want to use any other mic then a sm57 you can always use two sm57s on the cabs..
its like being in a sports car and only using it for picking up shopping... good videos though mate
Great Job yet again. Should get those invader pickups. Ive been using them for years and there awesome pickups.they really Dial those Metallica tones in. Thaks mate...
I heard it, and I know you did 🤘
🔥🔥 nailed
Dude ive got an '85 4 vertical input 2204 thats been raped by the soldering iron in an attempt to achieve what i reckoned was the essence of the Kill em All tone. After 6 weeks of 10 hour days with 2 four way switches on something like 35 points in the circuit i achieved it. And much, much more. No shitty coating needed by any OD pedals. All thats needed is an oversized cab like the Mode 4 with a couple greenbacks in place of the G100k's it comes with and a Gibsonish ax. Dont let anyone tell u this amp teeters on instability, with proper lead dress and a bit of shielded grid wire absolute whisper quiet stability is there to be had from 4 stages at higher "gain" levels than any Marshall ive ever heard
And most importantly because the EQ is lit by hi plate voltage in combination with a 4 way switch at the slope resistor point absolutely no outboard EQ is required. If Marshall did what I did the metal world would praise and adore them
Absolutely nailed it. Can you do a video for lamb of god Ashes of the wake tone with the mark V? Thanks
Here you go man 🤘🏻
ua-cam.com/video/FROsFjqezxE/v-deo.html
Great video! can you do a wake up dead solo and rhythm video?
You can use Marshall's FX Loops and the new Tonex pedal to simulate the pre-amp settings of 80s/90s metal. I think you will love getting any Marshall metal artist through your SC20h FX loop.
can you explain this further?
@@scaremoth334 you can use the power amplifier of your guitar or bass amplifier by plugging TONEX Pedal into the
return input of the amp’s FX Loop. Page 8 of the manual.
Looks like you really like a combination of green and yellow. Pedals on the board, guitars on the wall, birds. All are green on the left and yellow on the right.
Really liked this video, the tones are on point as always! I have a question, since you seem to be a Flying V guy, do you have any suggestions on a Jackson V that doesn't surpass the 1000$ mark but still gets the job done? I have my eyes set on the Scott Ian King V at the moment, but I've seen mixed opinions about it so I'm not sure
A Scott Ian model is pretty cool but not the Floyd version. The basic JS32T king V has pretty descent specs. Sure it’s a bolt on neck but it’s rock maple compound radius with graphite reinforcements. The pickups are passive ceramic. I think it’d be awesome for the money. I wouldn’t get a cheap one with a Floyd setup though.
@@LambChopper678 thank you! so if I wanted a V with a decent Floyd setup, how much money would I have to spend?
www.jacksonguitars.com/en/body-shape/king-v/pro-series-king-v-kv/2914413503.html
Amazing how much difference different pickups make. I've got the same amp, same pedals, speaker cab with the g12-65h (same speakers used on RTL), Same settings on everything but Gibson Dirty Fingers+ in the guitar and doesn't sound like this lol
Best tone EVER
💫💯💢💯💯💯💫💥great video again
1:01 Hmmm, I could've sworn James used his Flying V copy for the Ride The Lightning recordings. I know the King V was used on Master of Puppets, but didn't realize he had it further back. Interesting fact to know. 🤔😮
Dude, this is absolutely baller. My sole goal in life right now is to try and sound like Metallica, so to see it done so perfectly has both given me hope and despair. 😭 Still though, it's massively wicked to see that RTL sound recreated. Nice!
Hey man 😁 it would be cool if you could get a hold of Mr. Scary mod for that Marshall and see how the amp sounds with it 😁
Anthrax - Among the Living tone video next!
Love the old school decks on the wall, Powell Peralta??
Isso eh o que eu chamo de quarto da alegria
Wow, we really get to see the dark side of the parrot as he provides a mosh pit for the metal 😱🤯🤘🏼
The most perfectly groomed parrots I've ever seen in my life!
Super interesting, and spot on as always! I do think the cab/mic combo is crucial to get this tone. You can hear some of the identity around the 2k hz, specially when doing A/B between an isolated guitar from the record vs one's try. This is super hard to achieve with EQing alone... you can't push this band as it adds too many mids to the tone, but you miss the hiss that characterizes the guitars. Its just how the G12 65 with the SM7b sound like.
Yep it's absolutely the g12-65 (NOT the m65 creamback but that's also a great speaker) I have one and it does RTL all day
@@phantomflame0658 yea its the old 65, absolute must for this tone, i'll take a stab at it now that i have a decent 65 IR with the SM7 as well
