SHOULD YOU POLISH AFTER CLAY -or- Is it safe to CLAY and SEAL?

- Claying your car removes embedded contamination from your paint. But is it safe to Clay and then apply protection or seal the paint right after the claying process. In todays video I go over the pros and cons of a clay and seal and explain why I personally don't do this on my personal care or on my customers vehicles. Some say clay is non abrasive while other say it is, so I do a side by side test to see just what happens when claying. ENJOY!!!

DIY decontamination towel you should give a try too
As a pro - detailer for many years, I agree and disagree with his methods but I have a tonne of respect for this young man as he says straight off the bat, " this is only my opinion"
I will only polish a customers car if they pay for paint correction.
Thanks a lot I appreciate that! I agree and I charge completely different prices for correction but I do build an enhancement polish into the price of many of my packages to help address minor issues. But again, for corrections I always address the condition with the customer in person and discuss how far they want to go before giving pricing
@@imjoshvQuestion. Does it matter what polisher you have? Long throw or short throw? Backing plate size?
I have a Rupes LHR15 5" plate, a
Milwaukee M18 21mm throw with a 6" plate and a Zota 3" 8 mm polisher. I'm looking for suggestions on backing plates ( holes or not) and should I use waffle pads only?
This is something I've had in mind the last couple of weeks and Josh came in the clutch as always
Great video Josh!
One of your videos randomly came up in my feed. I subscribed right away. Love your channel!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it
Hey, love your videos! Keep up the good work brother. Started my own business a few months ago and you have been a big inspiration.
On my truck I used the Mother’s kit, on my wife’s car I used the rag company’s synthetic pad with DIYs iron remover, both worked really well, thanks Josh 👍😁
Awesome thanks for the feedback Dave!
I use your method!!! Have a grrat weekend!!
Nice job on the video. Any chance you will do a review on the Lulyday 21V 15mm random orbital cordless polisher on the A site? It looks like it might be a really good budget option and it comes with 5 and 6 inch backing plates.
Appreciate the video... good to see different ideas at play... typically, no one idea is the only option and I would agree... you do you if it gives you results you're happy with.
🙂👍👍
Thanks for the video
I say try a better lubrication. I use DIY rinseless as my lube and have the Rag company clay towel and I have done my perfect paint basically show car paint on my 22 Camaro and its a darker blue and i have never had a mark left behind. I think its the detail spray and not enough liquid in that Rag company sponge is why it left stuff behind. Throw the sponge in the bucket of rinselss and use it soaking wet and Rinseless as the spray on lube as well.
Yep the clay sponge actually was soaking before use and I also prepped it on glass before hand. Many quick detailers are essentially the same as a clay lube and work well for lubrication. However, I do agree that more lubrication can help!
Start detailing a bunch of cars and results will start showing marks 😂
@@ArthurMSoto sounds more like someone who rushes to get it done and causes marks.
@@05xrunner sounds like someone who has real world experience and uses a clay bar

If it needs Polishing. Do an analysis of the paint after decontamination. Right?
Hi, Can you tell me if it`s OK to apply Meguiars hydro ceramic wax after using Sonax Xtreme 3 Polish and wax ?. And love your No Nonsense videos 👌 Cheers !!!!
Hi Josh,
You should try Labocosmetica and P&S 3 ph system, they work great.
Nice job Josh I am seem to like the synthetic clay mitt from Jay Leno and I wanted to ask have you tried the new Mr Pink
I haven’t but thanks for the idea! I’ll get some ordered. It the Mr pink foam party with wax mixture right?
Do you do any work in Las Vegas? My wife's corolla has quite a bit of sun damage. Would like to know if it can be buffed out or needs repainting
Big fan Josh! Just want to point out to others that the Mothers product is really just a synthetic clay bar thrown in with their off the shelf ceramic detailer.
There’s nothing “special” about it vs someone trying the same using their own preferred clay and ceramic quick detailer
That said, I know point of video was moreso a question of whether a polish is needed in between, due to potential for marring
The only time I clay and NOT polish would be for my personal rides. Every 3-4 months [or so] IF some of the panals feel a "little" rough, I'll clay mitt while washing using a high lubricity shampoo [TW Slick & Slide]. Just to lightly "clean-up the surface then follow up with a topper...
Good vid Josh.
Shine on you crazy diamond!
@imjoshv I know this is an unrelated question, but I have a Harbor Freight Foam Cannon and a Ryobi 1800 PSI pressure washer. I got a 1.1mm orifice for the cannon, and when I install it, it won’t produce ANY foam?! Just water coming out, and filling the jug with more water. When I put the original orifice in, it works fine. What’s the problem here?
all videos are personal opinions. good content.
What are your thoughts and opinion on the HD NANO PAD from 3D
You are supposed to break in the synthetic Rag Co clay sponge on a window first start?
Yea that’s recommended with all synthetic clays. I didn’t show it but that was done. The clay sponge was also soaking in a bucket before I used it
I hope this doesn't sound ridiculous but I wish you would buy a different bunch of pressure gauges and test those to see what the difference is in the pressure gauges are. The reasoning behind this is I've watched the same pressure washer reviewed by different people and it's always a different pressure so I'm wondering if it's the gauges or is it is it the water input
Question Boss. Are there different levels of clay towels? Example, fine, medium, or heavy? My apologies for my ignorance.
Not at all, that’s a great question! Yeah for traditional clay there are different grades, and some brands have different grades as well for their synthetics. Not all of them, but some do
Hello Josh I thought clay removes decontamination and stripe wax so you had polish to add protection I do a clay and seal I am a beginner starting on my cars for now
I need to buy Polisher I want something inexpensive but that still work to work on my 3 cars any recommendations are greatly appreciated thanks guys have. A great day
a few things , just want people to note you clayed a squeaky clean panel not one full of contaminates that could actually cause worse marring , also i stopped clay/seal when i saw almost every synthetic clay leave a similar marring behind that puts really weird uniform haziness in the paint that wasn't just scratches , if it needs clay it needs at least a cleaner wax , if you want a decon/protect package just use tar and iron removers
I agree with all of that!
Thank Josh👍. Yah know I grew up always hearing and observing there is more than one way o skin a cat. And I grew up in the 60”s
May have been a better test for the viewer if you had shown results inside garage with a light source..imo..
How do I become a customer? I'm local.
If you clay, you polish. “Clay and seal” is just another way for self-proclaimed detailers to make extra money from a job. I doubt they explain the trade-offs to the customer. I have pretty good luck with Megs mild clay. Seems to minimize marring. Never tried Mothers synthetic but have tried TRC’s clay towel and it definitely marred the paint more than traditional clay.
Brother, Ive ceramic coated cars without correcting. some people are fine with the swirls and minor scratches. also, YES OF COURSE i explain to them risks of doing this and the trade off of such. But if a person doesnt want it, they dont want it.
Most of the claying process mars or dulls the finish
Why polish then clay, thats backwards. Every car is different analyze and proceed as needed. Normally, decon wash, iron remover, clay, polish, panel prep and what ever your going to use a sealant as last step. Gives Best results.
I assume to get a clean start. It is easier to see defects caused by the clay.
Yea you are 100% correct. This was just for the test to level the paint first so we could actually see the before and after from the effects of the clay… it was just to get it to an even starting point
Every time I see a "business" with a Clay and Wax or Clay and Seal service I just shake my head. They will learn eventually. Lol
what packages do you offer?
@@keeganbennett6724 Clay, Polish, and Seal or Clay, Polish, and Coat.
Y el niño donde esta😢😅😊
Mobile guys are clay n sealing. If you own a shop correct that paint by polishing after clay boys, I mean Josh mobile guys aren’t rocking latest n greatest rupes- great videos btw
not all mobile ones. just the ones that think they know what they are doing. Really, they should be doing paint enhancements at the minimum if a clay bar touches a car.
What do you personally do?
@@keeganbennett6724 I will only use a clay mitt these days n then whatever protection the customer wants, if I had a shop I’d love to do full corrections - what about yourself ?
I still work mostly mobile(my customers are just use to me coming to them) and I will do a pass with 3d speed or something similar to enhance the paint
@@imjoshvas most people should. After washing a car leave some protection on the paint.
I like doing clay/seal I’ll use clay towel while I’m washing and a sealant while I’m drying, quick work, easy money
Before watching the video, I polish after clay since claying can introduce micro marring.
link to what micro marring looks like?
It's almost like a dulling effect.
It's almost like a dulling effect.
I’m sorry all three sections look terrible to me after you use the synthetic and natural products for decontamination. Anybody who doesn’t polish after that is fooling themselves and probably whatever sealant they’re using is just filling in the scratches on a temporary basis.
If you know 100% of the car doesn’t have anything on it I say you can clay and seal especially if you have super soft paint which is possible but that’s just imo what do you guys think any and all feedback is welcomed have a great day guys
You never want to clay and then seal... lol. When are you correcting the superficial marring that you put on the paint after Claying? 😅 and if you don't care what your paint looks like and just want to wash the dirt off, then why would you care about claying?
I think some people do see the benefits of the removing embedded contamination… however I agree and always polish after claying
Had my truck done. The guy did a clay and seal (ceramic coating). Truck looked bad. A lot of scratches that should have been polished out were amplified from the ceramic coat. A real rookie job. Needless to say I will never acquire business from that "Pro" detailer again.
Don’t softball ball it by saying it’s your personal opinion. Something like your choice of wax or ceramic, that’s personal opinion.
Wilfully scuffing up a clients car and then partially filling in the marring with a wax/sealant is downright wrong and poor business practice.
Is it safe to polish over clear bra?
1st 🇺🇸
👍👍👍
The main reason to polish after clay isn’t to remove marring….its done to provide the ultimate gloss. Removing clay marring is just an added bonus of polishing after claying.
