13:08 "Nary a character can open its mouth without the writers sticking some little gag in there." That can be interpretative very differently depending on how you define "gag"
5:16 - 5:24 "It's like writing a bunch of books that go nowhere, & then writing a book about how sad you are, & _that's_ the one that makes you famous!" Actually, I think that that might be more common than you'd imagine.
@sebbe Cheaper, easier to manage, productivity software is dirt cheap, breeze to add more to the inventory for less money, and easier to replace if broken (no need to train an IT staff or send boxes of the things to a Louis Rossman).
My boyfriend is a diehard Chromebook fan and I have (over time) started to get it. They're integrating (sorry if that's the wrong word) Linux more and more so you can use steam and play low intensity games which is fine for most people. Chromebooks are incredibly fast and snappy, and stay fast for so much longer. If the vast bulk of your computer usage is browsing, in the Google ecosystem, or available as an app, Chromebooks are actually awesome and most average people who spend thousands on the best machine would be fine with a much cheaper chromebook (my dad has a surface, mum a MacBook pro, both as overpowered word processers and Netflix machines) That said I love my XPS 13 to death and couldn't imagine getting a Chromebook until the Linux functionality is comparable to the experience of using Windows. My bf is a bit of an early adopter in that regard.
To be fair at least the coins in Luigi's Mansion 3 has a purpose of being there since you're being ranked at the end of the game just like the first game.
The coin showers in LM3 serve the purposes of instilling a sense of accomplishment, allowing for the creation of clever setpieces with the power of the Switch, and teaching the physics to players by encouraging them to experiment with the destructible environments and individual objects.
Super Paper Mario wasn't like the first two and while it got a lot of hate from some, it still has a big fan base and is very convincing in the story aspect. Just goes to show what Color Splash could've been if they put as much love into the mechanic design as they did with the graphic design.
It also has to do that Super Paper Mario at least continues the charm and lore of the first two Paper Mario games. Literally the only thing it's holding mostly back is that Super is change from RPG to Platformer that acts like RPG. But it still feels like a true continuations from the first two games, while Sticker Star and Color Splash change too much in a bad way to the point they feel like a completely different series.
The problem you were describing about the cards being the worst of both worlds is 100% on point. I'm the RPG gamer who saves consumables like each one is the Holy Grail. I also hate manual looting in most games. And inventory management is the worst. Color Splash Frankensteins these together into some sort of endless nightmarish loop of gathering, sorting, using and losing that leaves me cold, shivering and dead inside.
@Bold One That would be very complicated without having the source code and/or digital tools created for modding that specific game. You might be able to change some things more easily, such as maybe injecting some code that changes paint scraps to allow you to use them to upgrade hp or max paint, but even that wouldn't be super easy. Depending on how the game's data is structured, we may be looking at something near impossible. Now if it was on PC it would probably be much easier as you could likely use a program like Cheat Engine to inject code in conjunction with Lua scripts to edit the game. Even then it'd be a lot of time and effort, and would likely have to be done by a team of REALLY passionate fans... And then Nintendo would shut the project down and we'd be unable to play it anyway. XD
Please play Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling. It's a charming indie game that encapsulates the visual style and mechanics of paper Mario while having great writing and adorable characters.
I've been trying to get Arlo to look into Bug Fables for three years now, and I've had no success. I'd literally buy him the game at this point just so that he could play it and hopefully give some exposure to it. But I can't find any way to actually get his attention. Hopefully this post of yours gets some upvotes. Succeed where I have failed.
@@parkerargyle4112 I found the tweet, and... The fact that he's not sure if he's going to talk about the game is really weird to me. Like, what? It's a really good game, after a style of game that he clearly wants, and it would greatly benefit from the promotion. Is his Nintendo bias so great that the fact it's missing the Mario coat of paint enough to make him not want to discuss it? I appreciate that he at least knows of the game but I can't fathom why he's so quiet about it.
I've played every Mario RPG. Intelligent Systems, Alphadream, even Squaresoft's Mario RPG on the Super Nintendo. If there was a Mario RPG I was THERE. I loved how they took Mario's simple, fun world and expanded on it so hardcore fans could really have something to sink their teeth into. Sticker Star seemed like a placeholder until a "true console Mario RPG" came along, but instead we got Color Splash and I was heartbroken. The Mario & Luigi series is in trouble now that Alphadream's gone bankrupt. It makes me feel like Mario RPG's, once a Nintendo staple, may cease to exist entirely. Maybe they will. But I ain't giving up hope... BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT METROID PRIME 4 BAYBEEEEEEEEEEEE
Nintendo got the rights to M&L so they are most likely going to make a new one (hopefully they wont ruin it as the reason they ruined PM was because they wanted M&L to be the core RPG games)
it's funny we spent so long watching nostalgia critic videos ten years ago that we really couldn't process just how bad he was at filmmaking the first 90 seconds of this video show a real grasp of cinematography, composition and atmosphere that was just never in those old videos i demand an arlo movie

I keep saying, if they just released a direct sequel to TTYD - no gameplay overhauls, no major changes to the core system - and just changed up the story and characters, I would deem it a greater entry than Sticker Star and Color Splash combined. Innovative ideas are great and all, but you don't have to fix what isn't broken in the first place
The suggestion I keep throwing around, that I still consider to be the best of both worlds, is, since the story of Super Paper Mario wraps up so neatly with all the bad guys either redeemed or unreachable, to have a sequel to TTYD with all the characters from both TTYD and Super Paper Mario as party members. The game could start with Mario getting back home from SPM’s universe, and being told he and his old and new friends had work to do. Since the weirdness of SPM’s playstyle came from the “other dimension” aspect of it, the mechanics and gameplay would be akin to TTYD. Then, you could have a postgame that could act like a story sequel to SPM, the story a lot of people loved but still felt somewhat unresolved. Boom, win-win.
Drageoks Llechtim Nintendo does what Nintendo do, man; I gave up trying to make rules for them a while ago. If they wanted it to happen, they could make it work.
Yeah but people always complain that series get stale and it's the same thing over and over again. If they take it upon themselves to change it, then I guarantee you that eventually people would complain.
@@thekirbyguy4576 true but if someone told me "do you want me to try a new mechanic with this game but the game end up super bad or you want me to make the game the same thing it's been for years but continue decent or good" i would prefer the second one
Claire I. It’s been out for like ever. And everyone is talking about it. Plus I don’t think Arlo plays farming type games. Or at least doesn’t have all that much interest in it
I actually really enjoyed this game. I thought the writing was clever enough and funny enough to carry me through the gameplay. The story was pretty original too. The combat system was flawed, but the overall gameplay of filling in colorless spots was extremely satisfying to me. Not a perfect game by any means but I still really enjoyed my time with it.
PowerPancake499x Completely agree. My dream Paper Mario game would be a combination of the story of Super Paper Mario, and the gameplay of Thousand Year Door.
Now that I think about it, that would actually be really great - you get the best of both worlds that way. All that's left is the HD visuals of Color Splash (although it doesn't have to all be paper).
Fine. Despite not liking it myself, the papery art style can stay if that means we will get a good game again. However... REMOVE THE WHITE OUTLINES. PLEASE.
I just don't get why they didn't make another franchise. It's clear they like the format, they think it's quirky and worth ignoring backlash, if they just had this series take the "Paper" name and they provided the traditional series with a new format like the Yakuza games I doubt there'd be so much hostility
I honestly couldn't agree more. Since they decided to effectively rewrite Paper Mario's identity, we now exist as a divided fanbase. While I personally am very excited for the TTYD remake, I still worry that no matter what direction the series takes, some portion of the fanbase won't be happy about it. They've put the series in this awkward situation where it will be very difficult for them to please everyone.
Usually I watch long talkey videos like this in the background but i genuinely watch your videos with full attention start to finish. Keep it up Arlo, you're a great creator!
LoekTheKing by another, I'm guessing you're referring to Xenoblade: DE. That shit looks BEAUTIFUL, and when a game who's only problem was pretty much due to the hardware quality limiting graphics.... As a die-hard Xenoblade fan (favorite game, in general) this remaster makes me so fucking happy xD
Arlo, you should really try Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling! It's an amazing indie game heavily inspired by the first two Paper Mario games, and it truly feels like an actual spiritual sequel to The Thousand Year Door!
What i loved about the previous Paper Mario games (64, Thousand Year Door, and yes, even Super) is the fact they have so many memorable moments, are in general very fun to play, and all have gripping storylines. I find myself going back and replaying them every now and then. Sticker Star, Color Splash, and even Origami King unfortunately don't have those levels of charm. I've played all of them through to the end, but even i can't bring myself to even try a new playthrough of any of them. They have a few good parts/story beats scattered throughout (color spalsh and origami king anyway), but the bad outweighs the good and i just can't get back into them. This vid is old and this comment section, but goddamn I hope The Thousand Year Door remake sells like hot cakes and Nintendo pays close attention to those unit numbers and finally realizes what exactly made longtime fans fall in love with this franchise. Cause after the remake, we really need to see a return to form sequel, or an adaptation of Paper Luigi's quest to save Princess Eclair.
unfortunately now we know the TTYD remake didn't sold like hot cakes (but tbh, that was to be expected and I don't think it really means something for the future anyways)
"It's almost entirely devoid of any real personality" works for Sticker Star but it is also how I'd describe Sword & Shield. The complete lack of strategy is the same as in Color Splash, the game plays itself. Style over substance, you're describing the current pokémon with every sentence. I almost wish you were as much into pokémon as you are into Paper Mario so you could give a review of this level to the pokémon switch games too, most people that give them honest reviews are accused of being toxic or haters of gamefreak.
Nintendo: "We have Fire Emblem and Xenoblade now, all our other JRPGs can either die or become baby games to create little future FE and XB consumers."
Finally someone brings this up. I couldn't agree more. Doesn't help that Mystery Dungeon, who had that "Paper Mario but for Pokemon" charm, also died out. Paper Mario is stuck between the main Pokemon games scenario where it's lifeless but still continuing, and the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon scenario where it's dead even though it hasn't really left with full closure and would be still charming with a new game. Yet everyone only talks about how PM is in that middle ground, because main Pokemon still gets showered in praise no matter what they do and PMD is just flat out dead with barely any flame of hope for it left in the fans.
@@autobotstarscream765 Nintendo didn't even make Color Splash or Sword and Shield though. Maybe blame Intelligent System and Game Freak instead of pointing the finger at Nintendo for something that didn't even make.
@@extremmefan7305 Hey, at least Mystery Dungeon has hope. It helps that even the worst game (which, IMO, was Gates to Infinity) was still a great time.
@@tastethepainbow "Hope"? What "hope"? If a long-time spinoff is killed at a certain generation we know that it won't come back anytime soon. Happened with Rangers, happened with PokePark… PMD is also still niche to the point where no amount of demand would make them consider the idea of making a new one that'd actually sell as much as they'd want to.
I cant thank you enough for putting out so much good content arlo. Your videos are always so well polished. I love how you examine everything. I also love your overall attitude. "Color Splash's unpleasant parts are WORSE than I remember!" Aaahh, what a sweet sound that soothes my soul ...man, do I despise this game to an unhealthy degree.
I wanted to enjoy it but I really couldn't. (And some people seem to think that we'd hate on it on purpose but I'm not spending money on anything just to hate on it.) Sticker Star was the ultimate crushing disappointment though.
@@CDAW_45 From playing the first 3 games (though I played TTYD first), I absolutely loved the story, the unique and memorable characters, the humour, the emotions, the sidequests and the little quirks. I felt absolutely none of that in Sticker Star and only a bit of it in Colour Splash. Sticker Star in particular felt like a New Super Mario Bros. game without a timer and those games eventually became bland through repetition and little creativity. The game also had a very pointless and frustrating battle system - seriously, there is no need to battle at all. There was pretty much no unique characters; 99% of them were Toads with no distinguishing features and I find that especially galling considering the first game on the N64 had a wide variety of characters that weren't just Toads. Where's the friendly Koopas, the friendly Boos, the friendly Goombas? I know Mario games aren't considered the greatest stories ever but I do feel the Mario RPGs offer very good ones outside of the usual "Save Peach!" routine. Mario had to save the Star Spirits in the first one, Mario had to collect the Crystal Stars, discover what the 'treasure' was and stop Grodus in the second and in the third game, the whole party had to prevent the multiverse from being erased. They made me laugh, made me emotional, made me happy. I get that from the Mario & Luigi series too and that's my favourite for so many reasons. But from Sticker Star and Colour Splash, I felt none of it. Sticker Star had pretty much no story (certainly not on previous PM levels) and while Colour Splash did have better writing, it still lacked the developed world of those earlier games. I want to stress that I don't want to hate the games and I never wanted to be disappointed by them because wishing for such things is frankly idiotic; why would I deliberately waste money on something to hate upon it? But I have no love for the latter games at all. (And yet I have a blossom of optimism. Nintendo has been a lot better with Mario recently; more expressive, more creative. Mario + Rabbids was a great, enjoyable surprise. I hope to see a full-fledged Mario RPG with partners and charm and heart again.)
I haven't played the game or anything but since you started talking about the origins of this channel, I just wanted to say that I love your videos! Your concept of the blue monster is a great solution to staying anonymous while keeping it fun for us. The reviews are great: you are honest, say original things and make me think about games I thought differently about. Keep the good work up! Thanks:)
You can literally see the decline in the series just from the names lol a game called Color Splash in the same series as a game called The Thousand Year Door
The only thing that gives me hope for paper mario is the master quest mod as well as Bug Fables which is a spiritual successor to Paper Mario thats on steam.
Ok I know everyone says how colorsplash sold bad because it wasn't what fans wanted, but you also have to look at the fact it came out on the Wii U and close to the end of its life a dying console that was literally on its way out nobody thinks that could have affected sales too
This is why they need to release a ttyd remaster, they can see how beloved that gameplay style an type of game is, then people who never tried it get to play an ofcourse it would sell out the ass since the switch is popular
This game was funny and charming I just... couldn’t get myself to care. I really wanted it to be good, and like arlo said there were a bunch of things like better aesthetic design and more quirky characters that were vast improvements over sticker star, but I still couldn’t get myself to love it. The battling was just terrible. I love turn based rpgs and I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever had less fun with a system outside the previous entry. The characters weren’t characters, and lack of a name and real recurrent importance is big for memorability. And god dammit, koopalings. Please Nintendo, no more. I’ve not enjoyed encountering koopalings since super Mario world, they’ve long overstayer their welcome. The main thing though is that it just didn’t capture the magic of the first few games. I loved the varied races and worlds of the first few, the series specific enemies, interesting and unique level designs, and compelling characters. That’s all gone here, and without it paper Mario is a shell of a series. It’s not bad per se but it isn’t what I loved about it. I adore super paper Mario despite being different because it’s the same where it counts imo, the same where the identity of the series can’t from. Paper Mario distinguished itself in the great story and interesting worlds. In its wild take on an established series and sense of scale and variety. That’s what made it stand out to me, and without that I just don’t know if I can really consider a game a real paper Mario again
I’m so happy I played this game before researching reviews. I really enjoyed it for what it was. Yea there’s flaws but I still found it entertaining. My son loved watching it.

You know, I love Color splash, and when I got to the part of this video talking about the bad parts of the game I thought “oh no” But then Arlo highlights really good flaws with the title and even got me to look at it in a different way. I still love the game, but I also like Arlos version of it better. I really enjoyed this review, which is not something that I usually say. However this one was intriguing, interesting, and fun. Thanks for making this!

You could say that, or his comment, "It's like Nintendo just didn't care" about everything they released in 2016. Star Fox Zero, Pokken Tournament, Paper Mario, Rio Olympics, and yes, I'm going to say it! Twilight Princess HD all felt like half hearted projects kicked out the door just so there would be something, ANYTHING, until the Switch released.

“It’s been three years...” and Arlo has finally upgraded from a chromebook
I'm reading on a Chromebook
@Foxy356 problem, schools use all there funding/majority on tech, as in most are used on Chromebooks ._.
@sebbe Cheaper, easier to manage, productivity software is dirt cheap, breeze to add more to the inventory for less money, and easier to replace if broken (no need to train an IT staff or send boxes of the things to a Louis Rossman).
sebbe Nothing can be downloaded onto a chrome book and ran which means the school doesn’t have to pay for a good proxy/antivirus software
If the vast bulk of your computer usage is browsing, in the Google ecosystem, or available as an app, Chromebooks are actually awesome and most average people who spend thousands on the best machine would be fine with a much cheaper chromebook (my dad has a surface, mum a MacBook pro, both as overpowered word processers and Netflix machines)
That said I love my XPS 13 to death and couldn't imagine getting a Chromebook until the Linux functionality is comparable to the experience of using Windows. My bf is a bit of an early adopter in that regard.

Luigi's Mansion 3: *Sweats profusely*
To be fair at least the coins in Luigi's Mansion 3 has a purpose of being there since you're being ranked at the end of the game just like the first game.
Luigi’s mansion 3 is beautiful
At least in Luigi's Mansion 3 getting a bazillion coins A. Feels awesome when you suck em all up and B. Helps you get a better rank.
Luigis Mansion 3 is a lot better than Dark Moon.

It's the Chain of Memories problem.

XD

IronXCaliber Seriously the best game I’ve played in a long time, and I’m not even done with it
I've been trying to get Arlo to look into Bug Fables for three years now, and I've had no success. I'd literally buy him the game at this point just so that he could play it and hopefully give some exposure to it. But I can't find any way to actually get his attention.
Hopefully this post of yours gets some upvotes. Succeed where I have failed.
he said on twitter he's definitely going to play it, but he's not sure if he'll do any content about it
@@parkerargyle4112 I found the tweet, and...
@The SNES Man You should. There, three now.
Maybe the next Paper Mario is a normal RPG again. The only reason why they changed it is because Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario were to similar
Nintendo got the rights to M&L so they are most likely going to make a new one (hopefully they wont ruin it as the reason they ruined PM was because they wanted M&L to be the core RPG games)

The Illusionist Nintendo would never sell a game where playing another game was required to understand any of the initial characters...

My feelings exactly, well said
Exactly - it was better than Sticker Star (although an improvement of that game _probably_ wasn't the direction they should've gone with).
PowerPancake499x Completely agree. My dream Paper Mario game would be a combination of the story of Super Paper Mario, and the gameplay of Thousand Year Door.
I honestly agree. I even had some fun with the combat. This is a truly underrated game.

PLEASE.
I can't stand the white outlines around the characters. It really makes me dislike the artstyle. The backgrounds look good, though.
I just don't get why they didn't make another franchise. It's clear they like the format, they think it's quirky and worth ignoring backlash, if they just had this series take the "Paper" name and they provided the traditional series with a new format like the Yakuza games I doubt there'd be so much hostility
I mean ttyd remake so theyre returning to form it seems
I honestly couldn't agree more. Since they decided to effectively rewrite Paper Mario's identity, we now exist as a divided fanbase. While I personally am very excited for the TTYD remake, I still worry that no matter what direction the series takes, some portion of the fanbase won't be happy about it. They've put the series in this awkward situation where it will be very difficult for them to please everyone.

I’d play Paper Luigi And The Marvelous compass

You should try playing "Bug Fables" it's like the first two paper mario games! Tbh I think it's better at the battle system.

@@1Thunderfire what was bad about both games
